client: read-only mode through Farcaster's public node - #20
The hosted client (https://spider333.github.io/outpost/app/) has no node behind it. Without a society invite it showed only "Connect to a node to start", so nobody could try Outpost without renting a server first.
What
The first-run card offers Read with the public node. The page then reads Farcaster's public node https://snap.farcaster.xyz:3381.
Read-only by construction: only plain GETs with no Authorization or Content-Type header (no CORS preflight, which that node answers with 404), and no app key is loaded, so the connect card, compose box, key panel and Like/Recast/Reply/Follow buttons never appear, even if a key is saved in the browser.
Every message is still verified in the page. Keys on Optimism are checked as before; with only one node, gasless keys cannot be cross-checked, so those casts are hidden behind "Show them anyway" (existing behaviour).
"Back to my own node" leaves the mode; a society node or invite still comes first.
The verification line names the node that sent the messages ("Farcaster's public node sent …") instead of always "Your node".
README: one paragraph under Quickstart.
Checks
npm test 119/119, npm run typecheck clean, npm run build OK.
New unit test: a Hub without a token sends a GET with no headers.
Headless Chrome against the built page served statically (like Pages): button → dwr → 100 casts; 188 requests to snap.farcaster.xyz, all GET, none with Authorization; no write controls with a planted app key; "Back to my own node" clears the choice.
You can now browse using Farcaster’s public node without configuring your own. This mode is read-only: posting and other write actions are unavailable, and the app identifies the selected source.
The first-run screen now offers the public-node reading option.
Improvements
Verification failure messages can identify which node was checked.
Documentation
The README explains how to browse with the hosted client and notes its read-only and verification limitations.
The hosted client on GitHub Pages has no node behind it, so without an invite link it could not
show anything. The first-run card now offers "Read with the public node": the page then reads
https://snap.farcaster.xyz:3381 with plain GETs (no token, no POST, so no CORS preflight) and
loads no app key, so no button that writes is shown. Every message is still verified in the page.
"Back to my own node" leaves the mode; a society node comes first.
The verification line now names the node that sent the messages.

Walkthrough
The web app adds an opt-in mode that reads from Farcaster’s public node without loading an app key. The interface identifies the selected source and limits public-node mode to reading. The first-run screen and README describe the option and its restrictions.
Changes: Public-node reading
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Select and initialize the public node src/web/app.ts, test/society.test.ts
The app stores and reads the public-node preference, then uses DEFAULT_CHECK_NODE for reads when the mode is selected. A test verifies that Hub.info() sends a GET request without headers to that node.
Onboard and persist read-only mode src/web/index.html, src/web/app.ts, README.md
The first-run screen offers public-node reading. The app saves the choice and clears it when the society node is forgotten. The README describes the hosted client and its posting and gasless-key limitations.
Label source and restrict write controls src/web/app.ts, src/core/verify.ts
The app hides connection controls in public-node mode and identifies the selected source in status messages. Verification summaries accept a node label, and prompts state that public-node mode cannot approve or post.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main structure. The 'What this changes and why' content is clearly written under 'Why' and 'What'. The testing section lists commands run and reports results (npm test 119/119, typecheck clean, build OK, headless Chrome check). The template's checklist items are not shown as ticked. The description does not state whether the bash providers script applies, since outpost was not changed. It also does not confirm that no keys are committed, though the description does say no app key is loaded. The docs evidence transcript rule is not addressed. The 'What this changes and why' section is present in substance, but the template's checkbox items are missing.
Resolution
Add the template checklist with each item marked. State that npm run typecheck and npm test pass, which the description reports. Confirm that outpost was not changed, so the bash test/providers.sh item does not apply, or run it. Confirm that no recovery phrase, app key or private key is in any committed file, including test fixtures. The README change is a docs change, so state whether any new or changed output in docs needs a transcript under docs/evidence/. If none is needed, say so.

When all checks pass, this fallback says “the node” and discards the node argument. As a result, the verification line does not identify Farcaster’s public node on the successful path. Include node in this fallback.

Update the success fallback in the verification summary to include the node
label from the node argument, so successful verification identifies the node
instead of saying only “the node.” Keep the existing checked-message count and
non-empty output behavior unchanged.
Minor · Name the public node in recount results. · app.ts:1141
When a reader selects public-node mode and recounts a charter, hub reads from Farcaster’s public node, but this status says “Recounted from your node.” Use source in the recount status so the result identifies the node that supplied the data.
