What happened

At TXMAN1 (2026-10-17) a flaky robot switch dropped NetworkTables for about 2 s in Q30, Q32 and playoff 4. Each time the match's Rewind video came out as two recordings. photonvision-2026-10-17_00-15-54.log:

00:17:17 NT lost connection to 10.85.15.2:5810!
00:17:19 NT connected to 10.85.15.2:5810!
00:17:19 Rewind: stopped session 0011_TXMAN1-Q30-r1_... (robot stopped)
00:17:19 Rewind: recording session 0012_TXMAN1-Q30-r1_... (robot)

Cause: on a disconnect, ntcore drops the values it had from the server. After the reconnect, /photonvision/rewind/record reads its default (false) until the robot's value arrives again. RewindManager.tick() took that false for "robot stopped", because the 60 s grace only applied while disconnected. The unit test below shows ntcore reading false after the drop.

The fix: patches/photonvision-74-rewind-reconnect-grace.patch

  • New class RobotRecordRequest: keeps a robot recording's 60 s grace through the reconnect until the robot sends a record value after it.
    • true: the same session carries on. Logged as "the robot still wants recording; same session".
    • false: it closes as "robot stopped".
    • nothing within 60 s: it closes as "robot didn't send record after reconnecting".
  • How it sees connects and values: a NetworkTableListenerPoller read each tick, in ntcore's order. A drop shorter than a tick still counts. My first version used listener callbacks instead, and they lost whole event lists in the test. The poller never did.
  • Quiet mode: RewindManager.recordingRequested() counts the grace too, so quiet mode can't close the recording while it waits.
  • Patch order: it's a new last patch, so 07/56/65 aren't edited. All 75 patches apply in order on the pinned fork commit.

Tests

  • RobotRecordRequestTest (in the patch; JUnit with a real ntcore server and client on localhost). It records, drops the robot, reconnects to a robot that hasn't sent record yet, then sends it late.
    • New code: all 4 cases pass, in 5 of 5 runs.
      • A late true keeps one session.
      • An explicit false ends it.
      • 60 s with no value ends it.
      • A bench recording isn't held by the robot's grace.
    • Old rule, put back temporarily: 3 of the 4 fail at still the same session, not "robot stopped". That's the TXMAN1 split.
  • tests/rewind-sessions/reconnect.sh (on the Jetson, added to run-all.sh as rewind-reconnect):
    • A fake robot plays an FMS match with record on. The test drops its traffic with iptables, and FakeRobot withholds record after the reconnect (new FAKE_ROBOT_RECORD=1 and -norecord phases).
    • It checks for one session name, one "recording session" line, the reconnect log lines, and a "robot stopped" at the end.
    • Not run yet: nothing was deployed to the Jetson for this PR. Run it after installing a jar built from this branch.
  • Also checked:
    • photon-server compiles.
    • photon-core's full suite: 4 tests fail (PipelineManagerTest, VisionSourceManagerTest, FileSaveFrameConsumerTest, VisionModuleManagerTest). They fail the same way without this patch: they're environment failures in WSL.
    • shellcheck is clean on the new and changed scripts.

Not in this PR

The robot-side 10 s tail is shorter than the gap between auto and teleop at this event. In the same log, Q30 was already split at the end of auto ("robot stopped" at 00:16:07, a new session at 00:16:17). That's a robot-code change, in 2026-FM-SystemCore.

…(photonvision-74)

After a reconnect, ntcore reads /photonvision/rewind/record as its default (false) until the
robot's value arrives again, and RewindManager.tick() took that for "robot stopped": at TXMAN1
(2026-10-17) each ~2 s switch drop split Q30, Q32 and a playoff match into two recordings.

RobotRecordRequest keeps the 60 s grace through the reconnect until a record value arrives after
it: a true carries on in the same session, a false or 60 s of nothing ends it. Connects and
values come from one NetworkTableListenerPoller, read each tick in ntcore's order.

RobotRecordRequestTest (real ntcore server and client on localhost) reproduces the drop,
reconnect and late value: one session now, where the old rule split it. tests/rewind-sessions/
reconnect.sh checks the same end to end on the Jetson (FakeRobot gains FAKE_ROBOT_RECORD and
"-norecord" phases).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Rewind recordings now continue through brief NetworkTables disconnects. A renewed record=true keeps the same session; record=false or 60 seconds without a new value ends it.
  • Tests
    • Added reconnect coverage to verify that a disconnect and recovery do not split a recording session, and that recording stops when requested or the grace period expires.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Rewind guidance and the PhotonVision fork description to reflect reconnect handling and the included patches.

Rewind now preserves an open robot recording session while it waits for a fresh NetworkTables record value after a disconnect. Unit and integration tests cover reconnect outcomes, and the documentation and README describe the behavior.

Changes: Rewind reconnect handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track reconnect grace and recording state
patches/photonvision-74-rewind-reconnect-grace.patch
RobotRecordRequest processes connection and record events in order. RewindManager keeps an open session during eligible grace periods and reports distinct stop reasons. Unit tests cover reconnect, explicit false, grace expiry, and no open session.
Exercise reconnects with the fake robot
tests/fake-robot/FakeRobot.java, tests/rewind-sessions/reconnect.sh, tests/run-all.sh
FakeRobot can publish recording requests and end a recording with record=false. The integration test drops and restores robot traffic, then checks that one session remains open through reconnect and ends on the robot’s false request. The test runner adds this scenario.
Document reconnect behavior
docs/REWIND.md, docs/TECHNICAL.md, README.md
The documentation describes the 60-second wait for a fresh record value and the outcomes for true, false, and no value. The README updates the patch range and lists reconnects among the tested behaviors.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the stop reason for an explicit false after reconnect.

wasWaiting holds the waiting state from the previous tick. It does not show whether the robot sent a value on this tick. This produces the wrong stop reason in one case:

  1. Previous tick: the session is waiting after reconnect, so waitingAfterReconnect == true.
  2. This tick: the robot's record=false arrives. heardSinceConnect becomes true, so grace and wants are both false, and the session stops.
  3. wasWaiting is true and ntConnected is true. The stop reason becomes "robot didn't send record after reconnecting".

The robot did send record. The correct reason is "robot stopped". As a result, the timeout and the explicit false get the same stop reason, so the PR does not deliver the distinct stop reasons it describes. The stopReason value also misleads anyone debugging a match recording later.

The timeout case still gets the right reason, because heardSinceConnect stays false in that case.

To fix this, expose whether a robot value arrived since the last connect, and use it here. RobotRecordRequestTest only counts opened and closed sessions, so it does not catch this. Add an assertion on the stop reason for the explicit-false path.

🐛 Proposed fix

In RobotRecordRequest.java:

record State(boolean wants, boolean grace, boolean waitingAfterReconnect, boolean heard) {}
...
return new State(wants, grace, grace && connected, connected && heardSinceConnect);

In RewindManager.java:

                                         : !ntConnected
                                         ? "robot disconnected"

+                                        : wasWaiting && !robot.heard()
? "robot didn't send record after reconnecting"
                                         : "robot stopped");
