๐Ÿ“– About OpenBoard

Standardized test preparation is overwhelmingly locked behind expensive paywalls, forced subscriptions, pay-per-test models, and intrusive ad-trackers.

OpenBoard was created to democratize exam preparation by building an open, distraction-free, zero-friction testing suite. It pairs official test-maker items with authentic test-day digital tools (like the embedded Desmos graphing calculator and digital scratchpads) so students worldwide can practice under real test conditions without financial barriers.

While starting with the Digital SATยฎ, OpenBoard is architected from the ground up as a unified multi-exam hub for college admissions, Advanced Placement (APยฎ), and graduate testing.

Key Test Environment Capabilities:

  • Zero-Spoiler Testing: Answers and rationales are strictly hidden during the test to simulate real test conditions.
  • Accidental Navigation & Mobile Swipe Defense: Traps browser back button and mobile edge swipes (popstate), prompting users before exiting to prevent accidental loss of test progress.
  • Continuous In-Progress Autosave & 1-Click Resume: Test sessions (questions, selected answers, flags, timer state) are continuously autosaved to local storage; prompt allows 1-click test resumption if page is reloaded or tab is closed.
  • Timer Pause & Resume (โธ๏ธ / P hotkey): Pause countdown clocks anytime on desktop or mobile. Safely blurs/obscures question text while paused to maintain test integrity and realistic pacing calculations; resumes with P, Space, or Enter.
  • Automatic Practice History Archiving: All answered questions (whether submitted normally or exited early) are automatically saved to local Practice History with full answer choices and official College Board rationales.
  • Mark for Review (๐Ÿšฉ): Flag challenging questions and jump back to them via the Question Navigator dropdown.
  • Countdown Clock: Authentic timing with an option to hide the clock until the final 5 minutes, which triggers an alert.
  • Official Desmos Calculator: Embedded Desmos interface configured to College Board SAT specifications.
  • Interactive Pre-Submission Review Grid: Visual review card highlighting all answered, unanswered, and flagged questions before final submission.
  • Comprehensive Score Diagnostics: Scaled score (200โ€“800 or 400โ€“1600), pacing metrics (seconds/question), domain mastery breakdown, and full question-by-question review with rationales.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Tech Stack & Architecture

  • Backend: Node.js, Express (API proxies, telemetry, runtime upstream fetching)
  • Frontend: Vanilla JavaScript (ES6+), Semantic HTML5, CSS3 Custom Properties (Dark theme design system)
  • Mathematical Formatting: MathJax 3 (LaTeX & MathML)
  • Graphing Calculator: Desmos API (College Board configuration)
  • Data Architecture: Local-first browser storage; dynamic proxy caching for seamless online practice
