Summary

Implements self-contained trace state snapshots and closes the automated visualizer verification gap (Spec 11.07), completing items 2 and 6 from the roadmap:

  1. State Snapshot Extraction & Model (core):

    • Added StateSnapshot record with defensive copying for map fields and cloning of primitive arrays (int[], boolean[]) to ensure deep immutability.
    • Added StateSnapshotExtractor supporting all SharedState implementations (DynamicState, PetersonState, CounterState, PairState, DeadlockState, DclState).
    • Extended TraceRecord with states field, 5-argument constructor, states() accessor, withStates() copy helper, and conditional JSON serialization.
    • Extended TraceReplayer with captureSnapshots() and enrich().
    • Updated BenchmarkHarness and InterleaveRunner to enrich failing/deadlocked traces with snapshots when outputting --json.
  2. Visualizer State Strip Live Rendering (docs/):

    • Updated docs/visualizer.js to render dynamic state strip tables directly from snapshot.fields and snapshot.locals without requiring a program file.
    • Added .val-changed highlighting for variables whose values changed between consecutive configurations.
    • Updated examples/traces/lost-update.json fixture with sample snapshots for immediate live demo preview.
  3. Playwright Automated E2E CI (docs/ & .github/workflows/build.yml):

    • Added isolated docs/package.json with Playwright dev dependency and test script.
    • Added docs/visualizer-e2e.mjs verifying verdict badges, timeline selection, keyboard navigation (Enter/Space), live state values, and zero console/CSP errors.
    • Integrated Playwright suite into .github/workflows/build.yml in the visualizer job.

Verification

  • npm test --prefix docs: All 10 normalize checks and 23 Playwright browser e2e checks passed.
  • ./gradlew --max-workers=1 -PpitestThreads=1 test: 556 tests passed.
  • ./gradlew --max-workers=1 -PpitestThreads=1 check javadoc: Passed with zero warnings.
  • ./gradlew --max-workers=1 -PpitestThreads=1 pitest: 255/268 mutants killed (95.15% vs 94% floor ratchet).

Enrich TraceRecord with per-configuration StateSnapshot records (shared fields and per-thread locals) captured during replay and emitted in --json reports. Update visualizer.js and visualizer.css to render live state strip tables with diff highlighting between consecutive steps independently of external program JSON.

Add an automated headless Playwright test suite in docs/visualizer-e2e.mjs integrated into .github/workflows/build.yml to verify verdict rendering, timeline selection, keyboard accessibility, and state strip values in CI.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Visualizer traces now show captured program states, including shared values and per-thread locals. Changed values are highlighted, and state details remain available when program information is limited.
    • Lost-update trace includes state snapshots alongside its existing outcomes.
    • Failing traces in benchmark reports now include state snapshots when available.
  • Tests

    • Visualizer compatibility checks now run browser-based tests covering trace loading, displayed states and verdicts, row selection, and page errors.

The change captures per-step program state in trace snapshots, includes snapshots in trace and benchmark output, and displays them in the visualizer. It also adds Playwright browser tests and updates the build workflow to run them.

Benchmark JSON omits state snapshots for deadlocks. Captured snapshot arrays can be changed after capture. Time-limited runs can spend extra time and memory replaying completed traces. These issues should be addressed before merging.

Graphify reviewed this change.

No issues found by static checks — no coupling regressions or blocking issues in the code graph. That is not the same as safe to merge: see what was not checked.

Not checked: tests were not run; no formal proof of the changed code.

Graphify review — findings

Adds a headless Playwright end-to-end suite for visualizer.html that loads the example traces and checks verdict badges, timeline rows, row selection by click and Enter/Space, state-strip values with changed-value highlighting, and that no console errors occur. docs now has its own package.json, where npm test runs the existing verdict-compatibility check followed by the e2e suite. CI installs those dependencies and Chromium and runs the full suite instead of only the normalize check.

Review partial — this diff was larger than one review pass covers, so later files were not reviewed; some findings may be missing.

Analysis details — impact, health, verification

Impact & health

Graphify review

Impact — 351 functions depend on the 201 functions this change touches.

Health — this change adds coupling hotspots:

  • worse: renderStateStrip() — 4 callers, 5 callees

Verification — 351 functions in the blast radius were not formally verified this run (proofs are advisory here).

Gate & verification

graphify gate

PASS — objectively clean (no health regressions, tests not run — proofs not run this pass (advisory)). Grounded, not self-assessed.

Advisory (not blocking):

  • verification_scope: 345 function(s) in the blast radius were not formally verified this run

Docs that may be stale (advisory)

Addressed CodeRabbit Review Feedback

Pushed commits 7f848b5 and e4ed854 resolving all 7 review threads:

  1. Defensive Array Copies in StateSnapshot:

    • Overrode fields() and locals() in StateSnapshot to clone all primitive arrays (int[], boolean[]) upon access, guaranteeing immutable snapshot state even if callers mutate extracted arrays.
    • Added unit regression test snapshotAccessors_returnDefensiveCopiesOfArrays in StateSnapshotExtractorTest.
  2. Deadlock Benchmark Snapshot Capture:

    • Updated BenchmarkHarness.findFailingTrace to match both VIOLATION and DEADLOCK trace outcomes so deadlock rows capture state snapshots during benchmark runs.
    • Added runProgram_deadlockCapturesStateSnapshots regression test in BenchmarkHarnessTest.
  3. Visitor Replay Scope:

    • Restricted onTraceCreated replay enrichment in InterleaveRunner strictly to VIOLATION and DEADLOCK outcomes, eliminating unnecessary replays for completed/incomplete traces.
  4. New State Diff Highlighting:

    • Updated change detection in docs/visualizer.js to prevSnapshot != null && !isValEqual(prevVal, val) so newly defined fields or locals in the current snapshot are highlighted with .val-changed.
  5. Playwright E2E Assertion Precision:

    • Updated docs/visualizer-e2e.mjs to target the exact value cell (td:nth(2)) for counter instead of row text matching.
    • Added assertions verifying .val-changed presence on config 3 and asserting 0 .val-changed cells on config 4 when values are unchanged.
  6. Javadoc & Docstring Coverage:

    • Added complete Javadoc documentation (@param, @return, private helper docs) across StateSnapshot, StateSnapshotExtractor, TraceReplayer, and BenchmarkHarness.
