Summary

This PR addresses Item 4 and Item 5 (Mini-Spec 15.01) from the approved remediation plan:

1. Generalize mutual_exclusion_peterson invariant to $N$ threads ($N \ge 2$) (Item 4)

  • Added support for cs_pcs: [pc0, pc1, ...] parameter in InvariantRegistry.
  • Evaluates invariant against $N$ threads, reporting violation if $> 1$ thread is simultaneously at or beyond its critical-section program counter with its intent flag set.
  • Preserves backward compatibility with legacy 2-thread fields (thread0_cs_pc / thread1_cs_pc).
  • Added validation in ProgramLoader ensuring thread count matches cs_pcs length, and requiring $\ge 2$ threads.

2. Add declarative DSL local array support (Item 5 / Mini-Spec 15.01)

  • Declarations: Added int[] support in state.locals with max length 64 and LocalDecl.ofArray(name, init).
  • AST & Parser: Added Lhs.LocalArrayLhs(localName, index) for local.arr[idx] = ... assignment targets in Parser.
  • Type Checking: TypeChecker verifies local.arr[idx] has INT_ARRAY local and integer index; rejects scalar use of local array or indexing non-array locals.
  • Runtime Execution:
    • DynamicState manages localValues initialized with array copies, with getLocalArray, getLocalArrayRef, and setLocalArrayElement.
    • Updated equals(), hashCode(), toString(), and deepCopy() for content-based array comparison.
    • State encoding in encodeTo() writes local array elements and lengths deterministically.
    • Evaluator.eval() evaluates local.arr[idx] with bounds checking.
    • DynamicStep executes LocalArrayLhs effects and correctly reports ASSERTION_FAILED on OOB.
  • POR Footprints:
    • ExpressionReads & DynamicStep.addWrite: static index generates exact location t<owner>.<name>[<lit>]; dynamic index generates whole-array location t<owner>.<name> plus index sub-reads.
    • Local arrays are forbidden in invariant expressions (containsLocalOrTid), preventing property leakage into POR observations.

3. Verification

  • All 542 unit and integration tests pass cleanly (./gradlew --max-workers=1 -PpitestThreads=1 test).
  • Strict Javadoc checks pass with -Werror (./gradlew --max-workers=1 -PpitestThreads=1 javadoc).
  • PIT mutation ratchet passed: 255/268 = 95.15% $\ge 94%$ floor.

- Generalize mutual_exclusion_peterson invariant to N threads (N >= 2) with cs_pcs array while maintaining backward compatibility with 2-thread thread0_cs_pc/thread1_cs_pc parameters.
- Implement Mini-Spec 15.01 adding DSL local array support:
  - LocalDecl with INT_ARRAY support and arrayInit.
  - Lhs.LocalArrayLhs for local.arr[idx] assignments.
  - Parsing, type checking, and expression evaluation for local.arr[idx].
  - DynamicState storage, indexing, copying, equality, hashing, and encoding for int[] locals.
  - MemoryLocation footprint derivation (t<owner>.arr[<lit>] vs t<owner>.arr) in step reads/writes.
  - End-to-end tests for Peterson N-thread invariant and DSL local array execution.

The declarative DSL now supports per-thread integer-array locals, including indexed reads, writes, validation, and state encoding. The Peterson mutual-exclusion invariant now supports configured critical-section program counters for programs with two or more threads.

Changes

Declarative DSL Local Arrays

Layer / File(s) Summary
Array declarations and indexed assignment validation
src/main/java/dev/samhb/interleave/format/dsl/LocalDecl.java, Lhs.java, Parser.java, TypeChecker.java, DslLoader.java, src/test/java/dev/samhb/interleave/format/dsl/*
Local declarations accept integer-array initializers of up to 64 values. Indexed local-array assignments and accesses are parsed and validated. Tests cover rejected scalar use, whole-array assignment, invalid element types, invariant references, and oversized initializers.
Per-thread array reads, writes, and footprints
src/main/java/dev/samhb/interleave/format/dsl/DynamicState.java, DynamicStep.java, Evaluator.java, ExpressionReads.java, src/test/java/dev/samhb/interleave/format/dsl/DslLocalArrayTest.java
Each thread receives its own local-array contents. Indexed reads and writes are supported, and read/write footprints include array elements or dynamic index reads. Tests cover execution, thread isolation, footprints, and out-of-bounds accesses.
Array copying, encoding, and state identity
src/main/java/dev/samhb/interleave/format/dsl/DynamicState.java, src/test/java/dev/samhb/interleave/state/StateEncodingFidelityTest.java
Deep copies preserve local-array contents. Encoding, equality, hashing, and diagnostic rendering account for array contents and lengths. Tests check that changing an element or array length changes the encoding.

Peterson Invariant Configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configured thresholds and thread-count validation

Programs loaded through the standard loader are checked for matching thread counts. Code that builds the Peterson invariant directly with fewer thresholds than threads can silently skip threads and miss a mutual-exclusion violation. Adding a matching-count check inside the invariant would close this gap; otherwise, the change can merge with this follow-up noted.

Graphify reviewed this change.

Worth a look — the grounded gate found no coupling regressions or blocking issues, but 4 advisory finding(s) below merit a look before merge.

Not checked: tests were not run; no formal proof of the changed code.

Graphify review — findings

Adds int[] thread locals to the DSL: they're declared with an array init of up to 64 ints and assigned element-wise via local.name[expr], which requires an int index and int rhs, and a bare local.name assignment is rejected. Each thread gets its own copy, and state copying, encoding and equality treat the arrays by value, so distinct contents produce distinct states. Relaxes mutual_exclusion_peterson to N threads via a cs_pcs array whose length must match the thread count, while the legacy thread0_cs_pc/thread1_cs_pc form still requires exactly two threads.

Worth a look

Impact & health

Graphify review

Impact — 391 functions depend on the 223 functions this change touches.

Health — grade A; no new coupling hotspots.

Verification — 391 functions in the blast radius were not formally verified this run (proofs are advisory here).

Gate & verification

graphify gate

PASS — objectively clean (no health regressions, tests not run — proofs not run this pass (advisory)). Grounded, not self-assessed.

Advisory (not blocking):

  • verification_scope: 379 function(s) in the blast radius were not formally verified this run

- LocalDecl: normalize null arrayInit to empty array and restore 4-arg constructor for backward compatibility.
- InvariantRegistry: reject fractional/out-of-range cs_pcs entries using intValueExact and guard evaluation loop against bounds mismatches.
- PetersonState: add threadCount() accessor.
- InvariantRegistryTest & ProgramLoaderTest: document test contracts with Javadoc before annotations, verify fractional/overflow rejections, verify thread 2 involvement in Peterson violation, and verify loaded invariant evaluation.
- DslLocalArrayTest: assert terminal state local-array contents via StateVisitor, test null initializer normalization, and improve Javadoc coverage.
