3D modelling 2022
May 10–12, 2022, Institute of Classical Studies
Instructors: Coré Ferrer-Alcantud (Universitat Jaume I) & Gabriel Bodard (University of London)
Do you want to learn how to build reconstructions of ancient buildings or monuments?
In this short, online workshop, we will introduce you to Sketchup Make, an easy-to-use tool for building architectural or other models. Through a mix of online videos to watch in your own time, and two live Zoom sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, we will practice reconstructing a ruined building from Pompeii, following the archaeological reports, dimensions and drawings. You will also have the opportunity to apply these skills to your own research interest, and receive feedback from the tutors in the live sessions.
- Install on your laptop Sketchup Make 2017 - older, totally free version of the tool. NB: make sure you install exactly this version only! (Not the “Pro” or more recent versions.)
- Create an account on Github so that you can use the issuetracker for support between sessions.
- Watch the following preparatory video tutorials:
- (Optional) 3D approaches and methods (10 min) (slides) (Gabriel Bodard)
- 3D modelling and visualisation (22 min) (slides) (Gabriel Bodard & Alicia Walsh)
- Introduction to Sketchup and some simple actions (19 min) (Gabriel Bodard)
- (Optional) read: Valeria Vitale. 2016. “Transparent, Multivocal, Cross-disciplinary: The Use of Linked Open Data and a Community-developed RDF Ontology to Document and Enrich 3D Visualisation for Cultural Heritage.” Digital Classics Outside the Echo-Chamber. 147–168.
- Welcome, introduction to the workshop
- Discussion of 3D modelling and documentation
- Sketchup Make exercise
In preparation for the second session:
- Work through as much as you can of the Ekklesiasterion exercise, using the following materials (all courtesy of Valeria Vitale):
- Watch as many of these following videos as you need to work through the step-by-step handout:
- Sketchup walkthrough of building (9 min) (Alicia Walsh)
- Longer tutorial at SunoikisisDC
- Sketchup walkthrough of building roof (4 min) (Alicia Walsh)
- Sketchup walkthrough of texturing (4 min) (Alicia Walsh)
- Sketchup walkthrough of importing objects (4 min) (Alicia Walsh)
- Longer tutorial at SunoikisisDC (20 min, starting at 51:29) (Valeria Vitale)
- Full walkthrough of Ekklesiasterion model in Sketchup (42 min) (Coré Ferrer-Alcantud)
- Sketchup Make shortcuts (Mac); Sketchup Make shortcuts (Windows)
- If you complete the exercise and feel like a bit more of a challenge, you may start a new 3D model of an ancient building of your choice. Here are some suggestions to get you started (but even better, find your own!):
- Mycaenean Tomb beneath the Middle Stoa; see especially Figure 1 and Plate 1a as the basis for your model.
- Roman Villa Gardens pick any of the figures, depending on how ambitious you want to be! (3.2, 3.5, 3.11 may be at the more manageable end of the scale.)
- Reports on practice and projects
- Questions and help
- Discussion of documentation, publication, other resources
