PR Review: Add GraphClient extension with enhanced NDJSON handling

Review Checklist:

  • Read repository guidelines (CLAUDE.md) - No repo-specific guidelines found
  • Review core query execution changes
  • Analyze new GraphClient implementation
  • Review extension framework modifications
  • Examine test coverage and quality
  • Check backward compatibility
  • Provide final review feedback

Overall Assessment: Approve with Suggestions ✅

This PR successfully adds a comprehensive GraphClient extension with improved NDJSON handling. The implementation is well-structured and maintains backward compatibility while adding valuable functionality.

🟢 Strengths

1. Enhanced NDJSON Processing

  • robosystems_client/api/query/execute_cypher_query.py:70-76: Excellent NDJSON detection logic using both content-type and x-stream-format headers
  • robosystems_client/extensions/query_client.py:211-261: Robust NDJSON parsing with proper error handling and data aggregation

2. Well-Designed GraphClient

  • robosystems_client/extensions/graph_client.py: Clean architecture with proper separation of concerns
  • Comprehensive dataclasses (GraphMetadata, InitialEntityData, GraphInfo) provide excellent type safety
  • Intelligent polling mechanism with configurable timeouts and progress callbacks

3. Comprehensive Test Coverage

  • tests/test_graph_client.py: 110+ lines of thorough unit tests covering all dataclasses and core functionality
  • tests/test_extensions.py: Added integration tests ensuring GraphClient is properly exposed through the extensions framework

4. Backward Compatibility

  • All changes are additive - no breaking changes to existing APIs
  • Extension framework properly integrates new GraphClient without affecting existing functionality

🟡 Areas for Improvement

1. Error Handling Enhancement

# robosystems_client/extensions/graph_client.py:87-88
if not self.token:
raise Exception("No API key provided. Set X-API-Key in headers.")

Suggestion: Use more specific exception types like ValueError or create custom exceptions for better error categorization.

2. NDJSON Parsing Robustness

# robosystems_client/extensions/query_client.py:250-251
except json.JSONDecodeError as e:
raise Exception(f"Failed to parse NDJSON line: {e}")

Suggestion: Consider graceful handling of malformed lines rather than failing the entire request, especially for large datasets.

3. Resource Management

# robosystems_client/extensions/query_client.py:293-294
def close(self):
"""Clean up resources (placeholder for consistency)"""
    pass

Suggestion: While GraphClient.close() is currently a placeholder, consider future-proofing by adding logging or connection cleanup if applicable.

4. Documentation Enhancement

  • Graph creation methods could benefit from more detailed docstring examples
  • NDJSON processing behavior could be documented more explicitly in the API

🟢 Technical Quality

Code Quality: Excellent

  • Consistent code style and structure
  • Proper type hints throughout
  • Well-organized imports and dependencies

Architecture: Very Good

  • Clean separation between data models, client logic, and API integration
  • Proper extension framework integration
  • Maintains existing patterns while adding new functionality

Testing: Good

  • Comprehensive unit test coverage for new components
  • Proper use of fixtures and test organization
  • Integration tests ensure framework compatibility

🔍 Security Considerations

✅ No security concerns identified

  • Proper token/API key handling
  • No credential exposure in logs or error messages
  • Safe JSON parsing with appropriate error handling

📊 Performance Impact

✅ Positive performance impact

  • NDJSON streaming reduces memory usage for large result sets
  • Lazy loading of GraphClient maintains startup performance
  • Efficient data aggregation in NDJSON parsing

🔄 Migration Impact

✅ Zero migration required

  • All changes are backward compatible
  • Existing code continues to work without modification
  • New GraphClient is opt-in through the extensions framework

Recommendation: APPROVE ✅

This is a well-implemented feature addition that enhances the library's graph database capabilities. The code quality is high, testing is comprehensive, and the implementation follows established patterns. The minor suggestions above are for polish rather than blocking issues.

Excellent work on this enhancement! 🎉

P1 Badge Import nonexistent get_graph API in GraphClient

Calling get_graph_info will raise an ImportError before any request is sent because it imports ..api.graphs.get_graph, but the robosystems_client/api/graphs package only contains create_graph.py, get_graphs.py, select_graph.py, and related files—there is no get_graph.py. The method therefore cannot be used to fetch graph details. Consider using the existing endpoint (e.g. get_graphs) or adding the missing module.

P1 Badge Delete endpoint references missing module

The new delete_graph method imports ..api.graphs.delete_graph, but there is no delete_graph.py under robosystems_client/api/graphs. Any call to GraphClient.delete_graph will fail immediately with an ImportError, so graphs cannot be deleted via this extension. This should point at a real API module or the method should be removed.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

- Replaced generic Exception raises with more specific error types (ValueError, RuntimeError, TimeoutError) for better clarity and debugging.
- Updated the get_graph_info method to utilize the get_graphs endpoint and added logic to handle unexpected response formats.
- Enhanced graph data extraction to ensure accurate retrieval by graph ID, improving robustness against varying response structures.
- Added a NotImplementedError for the delete_graph method to indicate that this feature is not yet available.

No breaking changes introduced; existing functionality remains intact.
