Security

SelfDrop is designed to run behind an authentication boundary. It does not provide an Internet-facing account or registration system by itself.

Deployment guidance

  • Bind SelfDrop to loopback or a private interface unless you have an authenticated reverse proxy or identity-aware gateway in front of it.
  • Do not publish the bundled ntfy backend directly when using the default Compose layout.
  • Keep ntfy credentials, reverse-proxy credentials, tunnel tokens, API keys, and local data outside the repository.
  • For remote Agent File Gateway use, bind the intended HTTPS SelfDrop origin with npm run agent -- init ...; do not bypass endpoint binding with an arbitrary remote URL.
  • Cloudflare Access user tokens are session credentials. Do not commit, log, or copy them into the SelfDrop repository or endpoint config.
  • Browser Access state is scoped to the current browser profile / cookie jar, not to the entire physical device. Treat other browser profiles, other browsers, guest/incognito contexts, and other devices as separate browser sessions.
  • A Cloudflare Access logout also revokes previously issued Access tokens for that session. Expect an interactive CLI authorization to be required again after token revocation propagates.
  • Back up server-side data before bulk cleanup or retention changes.
  • Keep Node.js, ntfy, your reverse proxy, and container runtime updated.
