📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughSM100 THD execution now keeps sequence lengths on device, builds metadata and O descriptors in a setup kernel, and launches a plan-time envelope. Dead units preserve sentinels and skip output stores. Scheduler payload reads use cluster-aware coordination. Tests cover dynamic lengths, graph replay, synchronization, and zero-KV inputs. ChangesSM100 THD device metadata
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to The THD execution changes can still produce out-of-bounds LSE stores or incorrect results for certain storage and scale-factor layouts, while per-execute scratch allocation conflicts with the stated steady-state and CUDA-graph capture contract; merge should wait for these issues to be fixed or explicitly accepted. …g mode in the async test (PR NVIDIA#606 review) The device-side metadata build now subtracts element 0 from a cu prefix-sum tensor before writing cu_q / cu_k: the packed buffers are addressed from token 0, so a cu tensor sliced from a larger prefix means the same lengths — and the host can no longer validate cu[0] == 0 (Rule 3), so an unnormalized base must not leak into the packed offsets the tiles read or the dead-unit sentinel's cu_q[0] == 0 empty-KV guarantee. The old host path raised on cu[0] != 0; a device build cannot raise, it normalizes. Regression test: base-0 and base-1000 cu tensors over the same buffers produce bitwise-identical O. The zero-sync test now restores the caller's sync-debug mode instead of resetting it to 0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

PyTorch torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode documentation limitations direct CUDA synchronization calls
💡 Result:
The PyTorch function torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode is a diagnostic tool designed to help developers identify and debug synchronous (blocking) CUDA operations [1][2][3]. Limitations regarding direct CUDA synchronization calls: 1. Coverage scope: The feature works by instrumenting PyTorch's internal wrapper functions that perform CUDA synchronizations [3][4]. It is explicitly documented as experimental and does not capture all synchronizing operations [1][5][2]. 2. Direct CUDA calls: torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode cannot detect or report synchronization calls made directly to the CUDA API (e.g., via extensions, third-party libraries, or custom C++/CUDA code) that bypass PyTorch’s internal wrappers [3]. 3. Namespace gaps: Certain PyTorch internal namespaces, such as torch.distributed and torch.sparse, are currently known to be outside the coverage of this debug mode [1][2]. When enabled using 'warn' or 'error' modes, it provides feedback when PyTorch triggers operations that block the CPU while waiting for the GPU, but users must be aware that the absence of a warning does not guarantee the code is entirely free of synchronous behavior, particularly if external libraries are involved [3][6].

Limit the synchronization claim to PyTorch-detectable operations.
torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode(2) does not instrument direct CUDA calls from CuTe or FFI code, such as cudaStreamSynchronize and cudaDeviceSynchronize. The test can therefore pass while api.execute still performs a host wait. Narrow the docstring or add extension-level synchronization detection.

PyTorch torch.equal documentation numerical equality NaN signed zero and Tensor.view dtype documentation
💡 Result:
In PyTorch, torch.equal returns True if two tensors have the same size and elements, and False otherwise [1][2]. Regarding numerical specifics: NaN Equality: Tensors containing NaNs are never considered equal to each other by torch.equal [1][3]. This behavior follows standard IEEE 754 floating-point expectations, where NaN is not equal to itself [4]. Consequently, if two tensors are identical but contain NaNs, torch.equal will return False [4][5]. Signed Zero: While not explicitly detailed in the torch.equal documentation, PyTorch generally follows standard floating-point behavior where positive zero (+0.0) and negative zero (-0.0) compare as equal (i.e., +0.0 == -0.0 is True). Data Types: The torch.equal function does not differentiate between the data types of the tensors during comparison [1][3]. For instance, it may return True for an integer tensor and a float tensor if their values and shapes are identical [1][3]. For more rigorous checks that account for data types and numerical tolerances, the use of torch.testing.assert_close is recommended [1][3]. Regarding Tensor.view: The view method returns a new tensor that shares the same data as the original tensor but with a different dtype [6][7]. If the element size of the target dtype differs from the original, the size of the last dimension is scaled proportionally (e.g., doubling the size if the target dtype has half the element size) [6][8]. This operation requires that the tensor be contiguous and imposes specific constraints on the tensor's dimensions, strides, and storage offset when changing element sizes [6][7][9].

…NVIDIA#552, SM100 d128) A grid unit past the live total (sum of ceil(S_q_b/CGA_TILE_M)*QH) used to fall through _thd_decode with batch 0 — aliasing live tile (0,0,0): duplicated compute, racy (identical-byte) O/LSE writes, and full wasted KV loops when batch 0 is zero-length. Now it keeps the batch == n_batch sentinel, which neutralizes every consumer through in-bounds metadata reads: eff_seqlen_kv reads cu_q[0] == 0 (empty KV range in every role, in every mask mode), the epilogue's per-sequence Q length goes negative (the LSE predicate never fires), and the O-store role skips the TMA store explicitly (descriptor slot n_batch is never built). This is the enabler for the issue NVIDIA#552 endgame: an envelope grid sized from plan-time declarations needs over-launch to be harmless before the exact host-computed unit count (and its .tolist() D2H sync) can go. The exact unit count moves to _thd_unit_count() — the seam the envelope replaces, and the seam the new test pads (+7 units) to pin the contract across a zero-length leading sequence, a zero-length middle sequence, and all-KV-zero, in both Stats layouts. d128 f16 only: the shared decode change is inert for the other SM100 families (their grids stay exact) until their O-store roles get the same skip. …ch the host (issue NVIDIA#552, SM100 d128) The KV-side .tolist() D2H sync, the host cumsum, and the pageable H2D metadata upload are gone on THD_DEVICE_META modules (SM100 d128): - The per-execute setup kernel (the single-thread O-descriptor builder) grows a first phase that builds the [kv_lens | cu_q | cu_k] metadata buffer on device from the CALLER's length tensors — (B,) per-batch lengths (serial cumsum, B is small) or the (B+1,) cu prefix-sum form — then builds the O descriptors from the cu values it just wrote (same thread, program order). The form rides a runtime bitmask and the fake lens tensors compile with dynamic extents, so both forms bind one artifact and no compile key grows (Rule 4). - The K/V ragged views bind their buffers' CAPACITY (numel // token stride; shared floor — K and V bind one dynamic token symbol) instead of the device-only packed total. Loads never step past the real per-sequence lengths the kernel reads from the device metadata, so the over-claim only widens the TMA descriptors' bound — the test harness's envelope storages already exercised exactly this. The zero-KV clamp is re-keyed from the packed total to capacity: all-zero lengths over live storage now launch normally through the kernel's per-sequence dead-row path; only zero-numel K/V buffers take the one-dummy-token clamp. - Knowingly given up: the KV-side cu prefix-sum invariant check — a validation that needs a device read is not a validation (Rule 3); it is caller contract now. The Q lengths still take ONE tolist: they size the exact launch grid. That sync dies with the plan-time envelope grid (next), whose dead-unit kernel contract is already in. Tests: a guard that FAILS if KV lengths ever reach the host (full numerics in both length forms), and an all-zero-KV two-shapes test (live capacity vs zero-numel clamp). Legacy modules (d192/d256/d512, SM120) keep the host-built-meta path until their ports. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…h capturable (issue NVIDIA#552, SM100 d128) The last THD execute D2H sync is gone on THD_DEVICE_META modules: the launch grid is the PLAN-TIME envelope b * ceil(S_q_declared/CGA_TILE_M) * qh (every length is bounded by the declared S_q), and units past the live total exit through the dead-unit kernel contract — no loads, no O/LSE writes, one empty-mainloop barrier dance each. Q/O and the shared Stats token extent bind their buffers' CAPACITY (they share one dynamic token symbol; writes are bounded on device by the per-batch O-descriptor extents and the LSE row predicate). The head-major head_stride-covers-t_q check joins the caller contract on these modules (Rule 3), and the degenerate early-return keys on zero CAPACITY, not the packed total — all-zero lengths over live storage launch normally and touch nothing. Execute now reads NOTHING from device memory: fully async and CUDA-graph capturable, pinned by two new tests — execute under torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode('error'), and a capture/replay test that REWRITES the lengths in-place between replays (the replay honors them: they are read on device, nothing host-side is baked into the graph). Dead-tile tax, measured (B200 d128, B=8 QH=8 S_decl=16k, CGA_TILE_M=512): zero at full/near-full declarations, +0.2% at half-length, and ~145 ns per exposed dead unit when live work is tiny (64 of 2048 units: 33us -> 319us). Realistic THD prefill declarations (S_decl ~ max length in batch) pay <0.2%; far-oversized declarations pay the same tax the C++ backend's s_max grid does — a capped persistent grid reading a device-side live-unit count would bound it by resident clusters (follow-up, noted in AGENTS.md). The AGENTS Rule 3 THD known-violation entry is RESOLVED for these modules and now records the remaining ports (other SM100 families, SM120) and the dead-tile-tax follow-up. …d256 / d512 (issue NVIDIA#552) Mechanical replication of the d128 template — the decode dead-sentinel and the setup kernel were already shared, so each family needed only: the O-store role's dead-unit skip (batch == n_batch never stores through the unbuilt pad descriptor slot), the THD_DEVICE_META flag + setup-kernel import swap, the _host lens-tensor params + launch swap, and the compile() fakes (dynamic extents; no compile key grows). All four SM100 f16 THD families now execute with zero host reads on the plan-time envelope grid. New test: d192/d128 (native MLA head dims) THD numerics via the direct API — the graph THD harness assumes d_qk == d_v, so this flavor's THD leg had no coverage. Still on the legacy host-meta path: SM120 f16/fp8 (different engine class and grid mechanism — needs its own dead-unit contract and setup kernel, and SM120 CI to validate). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e path on SM100 The flag existed so each migration commit could land atomically: d128 flipped to the device-meta path while the other families stayed correct (and tested) on the host-meta path. With all four f16 families ported it is dead code — SdpaFwdDslSm100._execute_thd is reachable only for f16 modules (the per-tensor-FP8 and MXFP8 executes return before the THD dispatch, and SM120 has its own _execute_thd) and every f16 module has the device-meta ABI. Remove the flag, the legacy branches (host tolists, cumsum, H2D meta upload, exact host-computed grid), and the now-unused _thd_unit_count. A future SM100 module without the device-meta ABI fails loudly at the launch call rather than silently taking a host path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s BR + SWA The notch guarded one kernel gap: the mxfp8 row kept bottom_right_with_swa off because the one mhas graph it admitted tripped the executor's SF-size mismatch. That was _reshape_sf reading B from the bound tensor's shape (flat F8_128x4 bindings misread), fixed in NVIDIA#606's mxfp8 commit — with it gone, all six bottom_right rows (SM100 f16/fp8/mxfp8, SM80, SM120 f16/fp8) serve the conjunction and the flag no longer differentiates anything. Since NVIDIA#606 the grid is the PLAN-TIME declared-S_q envelope (B * ceil(S_q_decl/CGA_TILE_M) * QH) and units past a sequence's live tiles drain via the batch == n_batch sentinel — no runtime length reaches the host. Per-tensor FP8 now runs head dims below the d128 tile through the same zero-padding ENVELOPE the f16/bf16 flavors use: compile() takes the actual (d_qk, d_v) so the TMA descriptors carry the real extents (OOB loads zero-fill — exact in FP8 — and O stores clip at d_v). check_support admits equal head dims, d%16==0 (16-byte TMA global-stride rule at BPE=1), d<=128; the descales are scalars so the envelope is arch-independent. MXFP8 stays exact-d128 (SF plumbing not audited for padding). This is the landing zone for the ViT d=72-in-80 contract (e.g. Qwen3-VL vision encoders) without caller-side re-padding to 128. Both fp8 kernel siblings (SM100/SM107) change in lockstep. The THD/varlen leg this PR previously carried is dropped: NVIDIA#622 removed the legacy kernel THD leg it wired; fp8 THD returns as a follow-up on the NVIDIA#606 write_thd_meta device-metadata design. …nel (Rule 3, Scale_S gone below the graph); baked 2^4 P-cast bias (#619) * docs(sdpa): retire the pre-envelope THD grid comments; drop the resolved THD entry from AGENTS' known violations Two merged-code leftovers flagged on the PR #608 review: - The d128/d192 SM100 THD setup-launch comments still described the OLD grid: 'exact flat batch-outermost (n_thd_units = Σ_b ceil(S_q_b/tile)*QH, host-computed)'. Since #606 the grid is the PLAN-TIME declared-S_q envelope (B * ceil(S_q_decl/CGA_TILE_M) * QH) and units past a sequence's live tiles drain via the batch == n_batch sentinel — no runtime length reaches the host. The comments now say so. (d256/d512 launches carry no such comment.) - python/cudnn/AGENTS.md Rule 3: the THD cu_seqlens entry was RESOLVED by #552/#606/#608, so it no longer belongs in the 'Known violations' list — dropped; the list keeps only the live ones. Comment/docs-only — no code change. * frost(sdpa): fold the per-tensor FP8 scales in-kernel — no host readback, one compile form The per-tensor FP8 execute paths (SM100/SM107 dense, SM120 dense+THD) folded descale_q*descale_k into the softmax scale and descale_[s*]v*scale_o into o_scale_fused via host .item() reads of the caller's device scale tensors — a D2H sync on every graph execute and the last big hole in the zero-host-read / CUDA-graph-capture story (AGENTS.md Rule 3). Kernel side: the per-tensor kernels now take descale_q/k/v + scale_o as UNCONDITIONAL 1-element fp32 tensor params — one compile form, no flag. Every thread loads them (same address -> L2 broadcast) and folds exactly like the old host path; the scalar args carry only attn_scale*log2(e) and 1.0. Adapter side: execute binds the caller's tensors directly (None binds a cached 1.0 — the direct-API identity), and amax_o divides by the DEVICE scale_o (the same div_ as before, minus the readback; scale_o > 0 is caller contract, matching the backend). _scalar and every .item() are gone; the AGENTS.md known-violation entry is retired. Scale_S/Descale_S are EXPUNGED from every layer below the graph: the lowering no longer resolves or forwards them (the graph still binds the op's tensors; they are simply never read), the binding drops them, the execute()/_execute_fp8 signatures lost the parameters, and the kernels never take them: - SM100/SM107 always cast P unscaled; the execute-time reciprocal check was itself a Rule 3 readback — deleted with its rationale helper. The old declines test becomes test_fp8_sm100_s_scales_ignored (wild non-reciprocal pair -> bitwise-identical O). - SM120's Scale_S machinery (scale_s kernel arg, log2_scale_s exp2 bias, inv_scale_s row_sum de-scale, descale_s in the output fold) is REMOVED; test_fp8_sm120_s_scales_are_actually_applied goes with it. Also repairs test_fp8_sm120_head_dim_tail_direct's direct-call helper (_run_template_tail) for the current kernel ABI. Those ten L1 tests had been failing with a positional-arg TypeError since PR #608 grew the kernel signature under them (#595's rewrite fixed it once; this ABI change would have re-broken it) — they were never numeric failures. With the helper repaired they pass 10/10. Tests: sync-debug-pinned device-scale execute tests on both arches (the graph execute now runs under torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode(2), which the old .item() path cannot survive). * frost(sdpa): bake a 2^4 P->fp8 cast bias into the FP8/MXFP8 prefill kernels The fp8-family kernels quantized the softmax result P to fp8 at unit scale. P after the online-softmax max subtraction is bounded by 2**RESCALE_THRESHOLD (4.0 for the fp8 dtypes — the lazy-rescale skip's slack), so unit-scale casting used at most 2^4 of e4m3's 448 range while flat-row entries (P ~ 1/S) sat near the format's subnormal cliff (~2^-9), losing relative precision from S ~ 512 up. Bake a constant P_CAST_LOG2_SCALE = 4.0 into each kernel (fp8 SM100/SM107/ SM120 and MXFP8 SM100 — MXFP8's block SFs cover Q/K/V, not P): P is cast as P * 2^4, so the cast peaks at 2^(4+4) = 256 < 448 — no saturation — and flat rows stay in e4m3's normal range out to S ~ 2^13. The invariant RESCALE_THRESHOLD + P_CAST_LOG2_SCALE <= log2(448) is documented at each constant. (This is NOT cuDNN's Scale_S — that knob no longer exists below the graph; the bias is an internal quantization choice.) The bias is numerically free everywhere except the improved quantization: it rides the exp2 argument (EX2 is binade-shift-exact), scaling by 2^4 commutes exactly with fp accumulation, and each kernel's structure keeps the bookkeeping exact — - SM100/SM107/MXFP8: total_sum accumulates in the same 2^4 units, so the O normalization (O_acc / total_sum) cancels the bias outright; the LSE subtracts the constant, and the sink denominator term is lifted into the same units. - SM120: row_sum is de-scaled by the EXACT 2^-4 before the finalize paths (sink mix, rcp, zero-row guards and LSE run on bit-identical true sums); the O leg's 2^4 cancels against a 2^-4 folded into o_scale_fused. Validated non-regressing across the fp8/mxfp8 fwd+bwd sweeps and both arch-specific fp8 files (the >128-head-dim tail accuracy tests pass 10/10 with margin at the tightened quantization).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * frost(sdpa): fix mhas fp8/mxfp8 ragged NaNs — clamp K/V TMA past the packed total; dead-row O := 0 on zero-length KV Two bugs surfaced by the frost:rel:sdpa:sm100 CI mhas fp8 ragged sweeps (gitlab job 404201758, 16 failures): 1. NaN-poisoned capacity tails: test_mhas_v2 NaN-fills the ragged capacity tail past the packed total, and the last sequence's KV envelope tile loads step into it. The padding mask kills those columns in S (NaN-safe select), but BMM2 still computes P(0) . V(NaN) = NaN. Fix: the THD setup kernel (build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel) now also emits runtime K/V TMA descriptors with GLOBAL_DIM clamped to the device-side packed total cu_k[B] — tail loads land as TMA OOB zero-fill, zero host reads. The fp8/mxfp8 mainloops read them from two extra o_desc_words slots. 2. Zero-length KV sequences (e.g. seq_len_kv=[0, 83, 77]): an empty mainloop never writes the O TMEM, and the epilogue's `o_chunk * inv_sum(=0)` cannot zero the garbage when it happens to be NaN (uninitialized TMEM on the sequence's first tile). Port the f16 dead-row contract (O := 0, LSE := -inf) into the fp8 sm100/sm107 and mxfp8 epilogues: `row_dead = total_sum <= 0` hoisted above the sink branch, and the stored O elements (plus amax_o inputs) selected to 0 explicitly. Tests: frost fp8/mxfp8 suites get NaN-poisoned capacity tails in _dense_buf (mhas parity) and new zero-length-KV THD regression tests; mhas fp8 fwd+bwd ragged L0 sweeps now 46/46 x3 runs, frost fp8/mxfp8/split-kv/sm107 suites 166/166 on cuDNN 9.26. ) * frost(sdpa): derive THD token capacity from the view's element span (#613) The zero-host-read THD execute (#606/#608) derives the packed token extents host-side as numel() // token_stride. That is wrong on both edges for the buffers real integrations bind: - A non-packed VIEW — a K/V slice of a kv-interleaved [T, 2, H, D] record, the layout torch.nn.attention.varlen users produce by slicing a fused KV projection — holds T tokens but only T*H*D of the record's elements, so the derived extent HALVES and the TMA descriptors cut off half the tokens: silently wrong O on every such call (issue #613; also 40 upstream PyTorch test_varlen_attention failures through the python-API integration). - Deriving from the untyped storage instead over-claims into ALLOCATOR SLACK, which is not benign: rows between the real packed total and the extent are masked but still multiplied (P == 0 times V), so they must be FINITE — TMA zero-fill only covers rows at or beyond the extent. A slack row carrying NaN bit patterns poisons whole sequences through 0 * NaN. Fix: capacity = the largest T whose final token's ROW still fits in the buffer's own element SPAN (1 + sum((size-1)*stride)). The span is exact on both edges: flat capacity buffers give exactly their token capacity (no slack), and interleaved/gapped views give exactly T. Every row below the capacity lies in caller-provided finite elements; every row at or beyond it TMA-clips to zeros. One shared helper serves the SM100 f16 path and the SM120/FP8 _cap sites. Verified on SM100 (isolated env): the #613 kv-interleave repro 41% -> 0 mismatches (frost-served); test_sdpa_random_fwd_ragged_L0 5-seed slice 84/84 (no regressions); fp8 THD ragged slice green; the new deterministic regression test (fused-record K/V views vs packed binding, torch.equal) fails on develop and passes with the fix; upstream PyTorch test_varlen_attention returns from 100 pass / 69 fail to its 140 / 29 impl-identity baseline with the torch-ops stack applied on top. Fixes #613. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test(sdpa): actually fuzz ragged token gaps in the randomized sweeps The seeded per-tensor token-gap draw (#516) lives in ExecConfig.fill_derived_fields and only fills strides left None — but RandomizationContext, which drives every test_sdpa_random_*_ragged sweep, explicitly assigned packed bshd strides in its ragged branch. Net effect: the randomized ragged fleet has NEVER bound a non-packed THD stride, and for packed buffers the numel()//token_stride capacity heuristic is exact — which is precisely why these sweeps stayed green while issue #613 (interleaved K/V views halving the TMA extent) shipped and had to be found through an external integration. Fix: the ragged branch leaves Q/K/V/O strides None and __call__ ends with fill_derived_fields() — one source of truth for the gap draw and its auto-packed fallbacks (cu / offset-multiplier forms #538, 1-byte dtypes #537). The head_major stats stride and the whole dense branch are untouched. Census over the fwd ragged L0 slice (84 configs): before, 0/84 drew a gap although each config's own rng_geom_seed hand-draws nonzero gaps; after, 84/84 draw gaps and ALL 84 would have failed under the old capacity formula. Verified on SM100 (cuDNN 9.26.0.33, CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1): with the #613 fix the gapped fwd ragged L0 slice passes 84/84 (all frost-served) — with the pre-fix adapter swapped in it fails 80/84, i.e. this wiring alone would have caught #613 the day the heuristic merged. bwd ragged L0 slice 158/158, identical to the unwired control on the same lib (the backend serves every gapped gradient combination); ragged_unified_L1 24/24 and offset_multiplier_unified_L1 24/24 (cu / mult forms stay packed via the existing fallbacks — 20/20 each in the offline census); the stride-override unit test still passes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(sdpa): accept max_total_seq_len_q/kv on the forward SDPA node `sdpa_backward` has taken `max_total_seq_len_q/kv` since cuDNN 9.6; the forward node never did. That asymmetry is the root of a whole bug class. A ragged (THD) graph declares `(B, H, S_max, D)` plus a device-side ragged-offset tensor, so the packed token total is not expressible anywhere in the forward graph — and reading `cu_seqlens[-1]` host-side is exactly the D2H sync the zero-host-read THD execute (#552) exists to eliminate. The FROST forward path therefore has to INFER an upper bound on the token axis from the bound buffers' element span (#613/#706). That bound is memory-safe but loose, and looseness is not benign: rows between the real total and the extent are masked yet still multiplied (`P == 0` times V), so they must be FINITE. A caller that over-allocates and leaves the tail unwritten poisons whole tiles through `0 * NaN` (#624). Every framework already has this number — it is `q.shape[0]` in vLLM, SGLang, TransformerEngine, Megatron-Core, PyTorch and FlashInfer alike — and today it gets thrown away at the graph boundary. This lets callers declare it. - C++: `max_total_seq_len_q/kv` on `SDPA_attributes` with setters and serialization, mirroring `SDPA_backward_attributes`. Frontend-side only: like the backward twin it is never lowered to a backend attribute, so it cannot affect backend validation (#704). - Forward node validation rejects it on a non-ragged layout, mirroring backward's "only supported with packed layout". - pybind: `sdpa(..., max_total_seq_len_q=None, max_total_seq_len_kv=None)`. - FROST forward consumes it: the declared total is min'd against the buffer-derived capacity, so it can only TIGHTEN the extent, never widen it. A stale or wrong value cannot make a launch address memory the caller does not own — it can only make it address less. Both the SM100 f16 and the SM120/FP8 extent sites go through one helper. Effect on #624, measured on SM100 (bf16, cuDNN 9.26.0.33, FROST forced), `seq_lens=[200,150,47]` (total 397) bound into `(640, H, D)` buffers whose `[397, 640)` tail is NaN — only the tail fill differs between runs: undeclared: 201,728 NaNs in O (49.6%) declared: 0 NaNs, bit-identical to the zero-tail run Verified: new L0 regression test (asserts the clamp AND that the undeclared path still reaches the tail, so it tests the clamp rather than a benign shape); dense graph + attribute correctly rejected; the #613 interleaved-KV-views test and the gap-wired ragged L0 slice (84/84, all FROST-served) unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(sdpa): expose max_total_seq_len_q/kv on sdpa_fp8 too Review follow-up. `PyGraph::sdpa_fp8` routes through `sdpa_internal`, so it already builds the same `SDPA_attributes` that now carries the packed totals -- only the entry point was missing them, and it hard-coded `py::none()` at the forwarding call. An FP8 THD caller therefore had no way to declare its totals even though the adapter side (`_thd_declared_total` at the SM100 f16 and SM120/FP8 extent sites) was already wired for them. Adds the two optional arguments to the declaration, the definition, the pybind binding and the docstring, and forwards them instead of `py::none()`. `sdpa_mxfp8` is deliberately left out: it does not go through `sdpa_internal` and builds `SDPA_fp8_attributes`, which has no such field, so covering it means extending that struct as well. Note the reviewer's stated motivation does not actually hold for FP8: the FP8/MXFP8 kernels already clamp their K/V descriptor extents to `cu_k[B]` device-side in `build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel`, so an unwritten K/V capacity tail is already TMA-unreachable there, and Q is the parallel dimension (a garbage Q row poisons only its own row, which is never stored). The change is still worth making for API symmetry and for exact rather than inferred extents. Test: `test_fp8_thd_declared_totals` runs the THD FP8 path with and without the declaration from the same seed and asserts O is bit-identical, plus the usual accuracy check against the reference. Verified: `test_sdpa_fwd_fp8_sm100.py` 61 passed; f16 THD tests 195 passed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(sdpa): expose max_total_seq_len_q/kv on sdpa_mxfp8 too Correcting my own note on the previous commit: I claimed `sdpa_mxfp8` was out of scope because it "builds `SDPA_fp8_attributes`, which has no such field". That is wrong — `SDPA_fp8_attributes` is a type ALIAS for `SDPA_attributes` (graph_properties.h), so the field has been there all along and the only gap was the pybind entry point. `sdpa_mxfp8` does not route through `sdpa_internal`, so it needed its own declaration, definition, attribute plumbing, binding and docstring — but no struct change. The MXFP8 forward row serves THD (`thd_d_shapes` covers the d128 kernel), and the adapter side (`_thd_declared_total`) was already shared, so this completes the forward family: `sdpa`, `sdpa_fp8` and `sdpa_mxfp8` all now accept the packed totals. Still missing, and genuinely needing a struct change: the FP8/MXFP8 BACKWARD nodes. `SDPA_fp8_backward_attributes` is a distinct class (not an alias) with no such field, so `sdpa_fp8_backward` / `sdpa_mxfp8_backward` cannot take the totals while plain `sdpa_backward` has since cuDNN 9.6. Tracked separately. Test: `test_mxfp8_thd_declared_totals` runs the MXFP8 THD path with and without the declaration from the same seed and asserts O is bit-identical, plus the usual accuracy and amax checks. Verified: `test_sdpa_fwd_mxfp8_sm100.py` THD selection 10 passed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…tal, and NaN-poison ragged capacity tails in test_mhas_v2 (#646) * test(mhas_v2): NaN-poison ragged capacity tails so capacity-vs-live-token bugs fail deterministically (GitHub #624) The f16/bf16 harness filled the entire packed K/V/Q/dO capacity - pad tokens included - with finite random data, so an engine that reads past the last ragged offset (e.g. THD zero-host-read binding K/V views to buffer capacity instead of live token counts) stayed green: the padding mask turns finite garbage into exact zeros, while real recycled device memory holds NaN bit patterns and 0 x NaN = NaN poisons whole output rows. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test(mhas_v2): stop drawing silently-ignored padded configs for mxfp8 The sdpa_mxfp8 python API has no seq_len/padding arguments and exec_sdpa_mxfp8 never reads cfg.seq_len_q/kv, so a "padded" draw ran dense-full while the repro config claimed padding — inflated coverage. Draw full-only with a pointer to re-add padded/ragged once the API grows seq-len support (the shared packed_token_capacity / convert_uniform_to_packed helpers then provide the NaN-poisoned capacity tails from the previous commit automatically). Also documents the analogous fp8 gap in-place: a dense "padded" draw runs as full because exec_sdpa_fp8 binds seq_len tensors only on the paged and ragged paths. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * frost(sdpa): clamp the f16 THD K/V descriptors to the packed total (issue #624) A THD caller binds K/V at BUFFER CAPACITY, not at the packed total, and the descriptor extent is the host-derived capacity. Rows in [total, capacity) are therefore inside the extent and get loaded. They are masked, so P == 0 -- but 0 * NaN == NaN, so an uninitialized capacity tail wipes whole tiles of O. The FP8/MXFP8 flavors have always handled this: build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel copies the K/V base TensorMaps into o_desc_words and patches GLOBAL_DIM ord=2 to cu_k[B] device-side, so tail rows become TMA-OOB and land as exact zeros -- no memory touched, nothing written into the caller's buffer. The f16/bf16 flavors used the O-only setup variant and had no clamp. Port it: build_thd_meta_o_descs_kernel takes base_k_desc/base_v_desc and writes the two clamped descriptors after the dead-unit pad slot; all four f16 SM100 kernels (d128, d192_d128, d256, d512) thread o_desc_words into _tmaldg_warp_group and bind tma_k/tma_v to runtime-descriptor closures under CFG.THD_VARLEN; _odesc_len and api_dsl's o_desc_slots grow by two slots (which is now unconditional for THD, not FP8-only). The clamp block is duplicated rather than factored into a helper on purpose: a plain Python function called from a @cute.kernel body is not AST-transformed, and hoisting it turns these tests red. Adds test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail: three sequences totalling 397 (not a multiple of TILE_N, so the last tile steps past it) bound into capacity-sized Q/K/V buffers whose tails are NaN. Asserts O is finite and matches the per-sequence reference. Validation, B200 SM100, cuDNN 9.26.0.33, CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1, same setup for both columns: test_mhas_v2 -k fwd_ragged_L0 without clamp: 19 failed / 27 passed with clamp: 0 failed / 46 passed test_mhas_v2 -k fwd (dense + ragged + fp8 + mxfp8) 212 passed, 28 skipped, 0 failed SM120 (prefill_f16_sm120.py) still lacks the clamp -- it uses the meta-only build_thd_meta_kernel, so the K/V slots must be introduced rather than switched. * docs(agents): record the CuTeDSL kernel-body and editable-install traps Two traps that each cost real debugging time on issue #624, written down with the runnable check rather than as prose advice. python/cudnn/AGENTS.md -- do not factor code out of a @cute.kernel body into a plain Python helper. The DSL AST-transforms only the decorated function's own source (for -> ir_loop, if -> scf region); a helper is not transformed, so the ops it emits can land outside the enclosing region. Hoisting an 11-line block that ran correctly inline turned 212 passing forward tests into 31 failures. These break at compile(), not at import, so --collect-only stays green. test/AGENTS.md -- confirm you are testing the code you edited. `pip install -e .` installs a sys.meta_path finder whose MAPPING hard-codes one checkout; meta-path finders beat sys.path, so PYTHONPATH cannot shadow it and edits in a second clone or a git worktree are silently not under test. The symptom is indistinguishable from a real result: a deliberately destructive probe leaves the output bit-identical. Includes the `python -c "import cudnn; print(...)"` check and a sitecustomize.py recipe for redirecting the finder for one run. * test(sdpa): the undeclared THD path is NaN-safe now too (issue #624) test_dsl_sm100_thd_declared_total_bounds_capacity_tail ended with a control asserting that WITHOUT max_total_seq_len the capacity tail is still reachable, so that the clamp assertions above it were testing the clamp rather than a benign shape. The device-side K/V extent clamp makes that false by design -- the tail is now out of reach on every THD flavor, declared or not -- which is the case the assertion's own message called out as "needs rethinking". Invert it: assert the undeclared path is clean, that O is independent of the tail fill either way, and that declaring the total does not change the result bit for bit. Declaring is now a host-side tightening (capacity, grid and workspace sizing) rather than the only thing standing between the kernel and the tail. Seen red: with the clamp reverted and these tests kept, 7 failed (test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail at 201728/403456/806912 NaNs in O across d128/d256/d512, plus this test); with the clamp, 7 passed. * test(sdpa): cover the d192/d128 flavor in the capacity-tail test; drop the hard-coded finder version Two CodeRabbit findings on #646, both valid. test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail parametrized a single `d` over _FLAVORS, so it could only select d128/d256/d512 -- it never reached the d192/d128 flavor, which is one of the four kernels this PR changes. Parametrize (d_qk, d_v) over [(128,128), (192,128), (256,256), (512,512)] instead, with Q/K at d_qk and V/O at d_v (separate ragged offsets per width). Confirmed the new case is a real regression guard: with the clamp reverted, dsv3 fails at 201728 NaNs in O for both dtypes; with it, all 8 combos pass. test/AGENTS.md hard-coded __editable___nvidia_cudnn_frontend_1_28_0_finder in the sitecustomize recipe, which raises ModuleNotFoundError once __version__ bumps -- and it would fail before reaching the MAPPING patch, i.e. exactly when the reader is already confused about which checkout is loaded. Discover the module via pkgutil.iter_modules() instead. The recipe as written is the one used to validate this PR. * test(sdpa): drop the unused packed-storage bindings in the capacity-tail test RUF059: q_stor/k_stor/v_stor were never read after unpacking. The as_strided view keeps its storage alive on its own, so _poisoned_buf now returns just the view rather than the pair. o_stor stays bound -- the assertions read the packed prefix out of it. --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* benchmark: attention inference suite (context/generation, cudnn vs cudnn_oss) (#636)
* benchmark: attention inference suite (context/generation, cudnn vs cudnn_oss)
A standalone perf harness measuring attention as served, in two phases:
- context (TFLOPS): full prefill (s_q == s_kv) and chunked prefill
(512/1024-token chunks vs a 64k/128k cache, bottom-right causal),
charted as stacked subplots per kind.
- generation (GB/s + % of memory SOL): q_tokens = 1 + MTP for MTP 0-3
against a 128k cache, one chart subplot per MTP width.
Two backends are swept: cudnn (native engines, heur A + FALLBACK) and
cudnn_oss (same graph planned with heur_mode.OPENSOURCE and
CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1, winning plan recorded per case).
Reference backends (flashinfer / flash_mla / b12x / FA4) stay available
for ad-hoc --backend runs.
Models from official HF configs (llama3.1, qwen3.5, gpt-oss,
deepseek-v4 shared-K=V MQA d512, kimi-k3 absorbed MLA 576/512, AR video
DiT), each swept across TP 1/2/4/8 shards; charts render every shape as
a cluster whose ticks run tp1 -> tp8. Generation batches are [1, 128]
(latency anchor + bandwidth plateau; intermediate batches are a smooth
occupancy ramp) with an fp8-e4m3 KV axis where the models serve it.
Unsupported combinations occupy blank chart slots rather than dropped
ticks. results/<config>/b300/ carries a full B300 (sm_103) sweep; sm120
follows.
The training suite gains kimi_k3 and deepseek_v4 configs (unabsorbed /
training-shape attention) and tolerates flash_attn builds without
__version__.

* attention_inference: address review — practical TP sharding, fp8 fixes, doc/tooling cleanups
- with_tp_shards now enforces what serving frameworks do: q heads must
divide evenly, kv heads divide or replicate (tp % kv == 0); anything
else raises. The 9-head video DiT accordingly runs whole-model only
(deployments use sequence/context parallelism, not head sharding).
- fp8 graph: reject sink presets instead of silently dropping the sink
logits; anchor the q=1 sliding window bottom-right like the bf16 path;
count Q/O bytes at 1B on the cudnn fp8 paths (q/k/v/o are all e4m3).
- config docs reconciled with behavior: dsv4 benchmarks the unwindowed
shared-KV core (stated, not promised-windowed), kimi context sweeps
document the intentional blank slots, kv_cache_dtypes explains the
full-fp8 realization.
- load_config no longer swallows missing dependencies from inside valid
config modules; dry runs honor --filter/--phase; run_all.sh guards cd,
validates config names, and mkdirs the log directory.

* Avoid zero-initializing JAX outputs the kernel already writes (#631)
* jax: stop zero-filling outputs the kernel already writes
Follows #592, which established this for grouped/unfused: passing
initialized_outputs makes XLA zero-fill the buffer before every dispatch, and
that fill scales with the output, so it is the JAX path's dominant host-visible
cost. Extends it to the entry points where the same reasoning holds and, more
importantly, establishes which ones it does not hold for.
Changed:
grouped/glu d, c and the workspace are all written before use
dense/swiglu ab12 and c are written in full over their extents
grouped/wgrad workspace only; the template keeps its zeros because the
kernel writes through wgrad_ptrs and never touches it
Deliberately unchanged, having tried and reverted each: dense/amax,
dense/srelu, grouped/dglu, grouped/dsrelu, discrete_grouped/swiglu and
discrete_grouped/dswiglu. Their comments cite the bridge's leading-dim
inference rejecting trailing-unit-dim buffers on pure results, and that is
still accurate -- dropping the donation there fails the JAX jit-vs-eager tests,
and grouped/dglu returns results differing from torch by 1.125. The zeroing is
load-bearing beyond the accumulators.
Rows at or past padded_offsets[-1] are now unspecified for grouped/glu, as they
already are for the torch wrapper's empty_strided outputs. Documented in the
docstring.
B200, bf16, 8 experts, grouped/glu jax.jit, median of 3 alternating runs (us):
2048x2048x2048 50.6 -> 36.3
4096x2048x2048 49.1 -> 38.6
8192x4096x2048 122.7 -> 108.4
16384x4096x4096 413.4 -> 385.8
At the largest shape that leaves +1.8 us over the kernel, against +29 before.
Adds a partial-coverage test that dirties the allocator before dispatch: on
fresh device memory the tail reads back as zeros either way, so a test that
does not poison it passes whether or not the fill is there.
* jax: stop zero-filling grouped/unfused outputs too
Folds in #592's change, which is being closed in favour of this PR so the
whole audit lands as one piece. d, c and the workspace are all written before
use, so nothing here needed the fill.
Adds the poisoned-allocator test for unfused as well: on fresh device memory
the untouched tail reads back as zeros whether or not the fill is present, so a
test that does not dirty the allocator first passes either way.
* test: gate the new JAX tests on CuTeDSL JAX availability
Both new tests called skip_unless_sm100() without first checking
cutlass.jax.is_available(), unlike every other JAX test in the same two files.
On an SM100 machine without the CuTeDSL JAX extensions they would have failed
rather than skipped. Caught in review by CodeRabbit.
* python: add the ensure_current_context #612 imports but never defined (#638)
#612 added 'from ._device import ensure_current_context' to _pygraph.py (used
on the python-engine execute path) without adding the function to _device.py,
so 'import cudnn' fails with ImportError on any package built from develop.
Hoist the established pattern from linear_attention/cutile/kernels/common.py
(ensure_cuda_context) into _device.py using this module's driver shim: bind a
driver context to the calling thread when none is bound - a JIT engine talks
to the driver directly, which reads the calling THREAD's context stack, and an
autograd backward runs on a worker thread where cudaSetDevice has only moved
the runtime's thread-local slot. Prefer the stream's context, else retain the
runtime-current device's primary one; best-effort like the cutile original.
Fixes #634.

* device: ask for the oversized-SMEM ceiling by ordinal when the binding cannot name it (#635)
### What
`DeviceInfo.oversized_shared_memory_per_block` gated the query on BOTH the driver
version and whether cuda-python's `CUdevice_attribute` carries
`CU_DEVICE_ATTRIBUTE_MAX_OVERSIZED_SHARED_MEMORY_PER_BLOCK`. Those are independent
axes: the DRIVER decides whether the mode exists, the BINDING only decides how to ask.
Refusing on the second gives up the carveout on a live combination — driver 13.5 with
a cuda-python 13.3.1 binding reports 0 although the device really offers 327 KiB. On
SM 10.7 block-scale GEMM that costs 3 AB pipeline stages (8 → 5) for nothing.
### Change
Keep the driver gate, drop the binding one: name the enum member when the binding has
it, else pass its ordinal, which that binding forwards fine. Only bindings old enough
to reject a bare int (they read `attrib.value`) genuinely cannot make the query, and
those return 0 through a narrow `AttributeError` arm. A real driver failure still
raises rather than being masked.
### Test
SM 10.7, driver 13050, cuda-python 13.3.1:
- the query goes 0 → 334848, back to the ceiling the part reports
- `test_device_info` + `test_public_execute_flavors` + `test_build_device` +
`test_stream_respect` + `test_tile_select_analytic`: 46 passed / 2 skipped
- sm107 block-scale kernels (`-k "sm107 and (128x128 or mixed_cga)"`): 42 passed
### Notes
- The `ensure_current_context` fix this branch originally carried landed upstream as
#638; that commit was dropped from this PR.
- Supersedes #615, which fixed the same class of bug in `frost/device.py` before #612
moved the query into `cudnn/_device.py` — #615 can be closed.

Backward + ragged + learnable sink was structurally untestable: the dense bwd
suite draws sink tokens but never ragged layout, and the ragged bwd suites
never drew sink tokens. This let a dSink corruption in the cuDNN backward
dot_do_o pre-kernel ship unnoticed for every ragged config with
d_v not in {64,128,256} (bf16/fp16) and all ragged fp8 configs
(TransformerEngine issue #3249; fixed in cuDNN backend).

* fix(sdpa): move the pre-9.26 Stats packed-BHSD check to post_validate_node (#642)
The check added in 173c431c (#304) ran in validate_sdpa_support_surface(),
which is called from pre_validate_node() — before shape inference. Samples
and users that leave the Stats output dim/stride unset (to be inferred)
were rejected with GRAPH_NOT_SUPPORTED on every cuDNN < 9.26, breaking the
cpp_samples 9.19 CI jobs on develop since 2026-08-15.
Move the check to post_validate_node(), which runs after
infer_properties_node() has filled an unset Stats with packed BHSD; the
check still rejects explicitly-set non-BHSD layouts and still surfaces
from validate()/build().

- The d128/d192 SM100 THD setup-launch comments still described the OLD
grid: 'exact flat batch-outermost (n_thd_units = Σ_b ceil(S_q_b/tile)*QH,
host-computed)'. Since #606 the grid is the PLAN-TIME declared-S_q
envelope (B * ceil(S_q_decl/CGA_TILE_M) * QH) and units past a sequence's
live tiles drain via the batch == n_batch sentinel — no runtime length
reaches the host. The comments now say so. (d256/d512 launches carry no
such comment.)
- python/cudnn/AGENTS.md Rule 3: the THD cu_seqlens entry was RESOLVED by
#552/#606/#608, so it no longer belongs in the 'Known violations' list —
dropped; the list keeps only the live ones.
Comment/docs-only — no code change.
* frost(sdpa): fold the per-tensor FP8 scales in-kernel — no host readback, one compile form
The per-tensor FP8 execute paths (SM100/SM107 dense, SM120 dense+THD)
folded descale_q*descale_k into the softmax scale and descale_[s*]v*scale_o
into o_scale_fused via host .item() reads of the caller's device scale
tensors — a D2H sync on every graph execute and the last big hole in the
zero-host-read / CUDA-graph-capture story (AGENTS.md Rule 3).
Kernel side: the per-tensor kernels now take descale_q/k/v + scale_o as
UNCONDITIONAL 1-element fp32 tensor params — one compile form, no flag.
Every thread loads them (same address -> L2 broadcast) and folds exactly
like the old host path; the scalar args carry only attn_scale*log2(e) and
1.0.
Adapter side: execute binds the caller's tensors directly (None binds a
cached 1.0 — the direct-API identity), and amax_o divides by the DEVICE
scale_o (the same div_ as before, minus the readback; scale_o > 0 is
caller contract, matching the backend). _scalar and every .item() are
gone; the AGENTS.md known-violation entry is retired.
Scale_S/Descale_S are EXPUNGED from every layer below the graph: the
lowering no longer resolves or forwards them (the graph still binds the
op's tensors; they are simply never read), the binding drops them, the
execute()/_execute_fp8 signatures lost the parameters, and the kernels
never take them:
- SM100/SM107 always cast P unscaled; the execute-time reciprocal check
was itself a Rule 3 readback — deleted with its rationale helper. The
old declines test becomes test_fp8_sm100_s_scales_ignored (wild
non-reciprocal pair -> bitwise-identical O).
- SM120's Scale_S machinery (scale_s kernel arg, log2_scale_s exp2 bias,
inv_scale_s row_sum de-scale, descale_s in the output fold) is REMOVED;
test_fp8_sm120_s_scales_are_actually_applied goes with it.
Also repairs test_fp8_sm120_head_dim_tail_direct's direct-call helper
(_run_template_tail) for the current kernel ABI. Those ten L1 tests had
been failing with a positional-arg TypeError since PR #608 grew the
kernel signature under them (#595's rewrite fixed it once; this ABI
change would have re-broken it) — they were never numeric failures. With
the helper repaired they pass 10/10.
Tests: sync-debug-pinned device-scale execute tests on both arches (the
graph execute now runs under torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode(2), which the
old .item() path cannot survive).
* frost(sdpa): bake a 2^4 P->fp8 cast bias into the FP8/MXFP8 prefill kernels
The fp8-family kernels quantized the softmax result P to fp8 at unit
scale. P after the online-softmax max subtraction is bounded by
2**RESCALE_THRESHOLD (4.0 for the fp8 dtypes — the lazy-rescale skip's
slack), so unit-scale casting used at most 2^4 of e4m3's 448 range while
flat-row entries (P ~ 1/S) sat near the format's subnormal cliff (~2^-9),
losing relative precision from S ~ 512 up.
Bake a constant P_CAST_LOG2_SCALE = 4.0 into each kernel (fp8 SM100/SM107/
SM120 and MXFP8 SM100 — MXFP8's block SFs cover Q/K/V, not P): P is cast
as P * 2^4, so the cast peaks at 2^(4+4) = 256 < 448 — no saturation —
and flat rows stay in e4m3's normal range out to S ~ 2^13. The invariant
RESCALE_THRESHOLD + P_CAST_LOG2_SCALE <= log2(448) is documented at each
constant. (This is NOT cuDNN's Scale_S — that knob no longer exists below
the graph; the bias is an internal quantization choice.)
The bias is numerically free everywhere except the improved quantization:
it rides the exp2 argument (EX2 is binade-shift-exact), scaling by 2^4
commutes exactly with fp accumulation, and each kernel's structure keeps
the bookkeeping exact —
- SM100/SM107/MXFP8: total_sum accumulates in the same 2^4 units, so the
O normalization (O_acc / total_sum) cancels the bias outright; the LSE
subtracts the constant, and the sink denominator term is lifted into
the same units.
- SM120: row_sum is de-scaled by the EXACT 2^-4 before the finalize paths
(sink mix, rcp, zero-row guards and LSE run on bit-identical true
sums); the O leg's 2^4 cancels against a 2^-4 folded into
o_scale_fused.
Validated non-regressing across the fp8/mxfp8 fwd+bwd sweeps and both
arch-specific fp8 files (the >128-head-dim tail accuracy tests pass
10/10 with margin at the tightened quantization).

* style: fix black formatting in cutedsl grouped GEMM python files (#649)
The scheduled clang-format/black analysis job on develop fails: three files
under python/cudnn/gemm/cutedsl/grouped/ are not black-formatted
(line-length 160).
While reformatting, black surfaced a latent bug in the GluCall/DgluCall
dataclasses: `sf_fp8_dtype_override: Optional[Literal["e5m3"]] = None,` has a
trailing comma, making the field default the tuple `(None,)` rather than
`None`. Dropped the comma so the default matches the annotation and the
public API defaults.
Also joined an implicitly-concatenated ValueError message that black
collapsed onto a single line.

* Restructure attention benchmarks and update benchmarking artifacts (backend 9.26.0.17, frontend b21cd3f) (#657)
* benchmark(sdpa): add the Hopper (sm90) row to the peak-MMA table
_FLOPS_PER_CLOCK_PER_SM only had sm100 and sm12x entries, so H200 runs
computed no peak_mma_tflops and their charts drew no MMA-throughput max
line. H100/H200 (sm90): 989.5 dense BF16 TFLOPS with FP32 accumulate =
132 SMs x 1.83 GHz x 4096 FLOPs/clk/SM; FP8 dense is 2x. No mxfp8 entry --
Hopper has no MXFP8 datapath, and those cases already record unsupported.

* benchmark: rename sdpa_benchmark_training -> attention_training; move qwen3vl_vit to the inference suite
- benchmark/sdpa_benchmark_training/ -> benchmark/attention_training/ to
match benchmark/attention_inference/ (module path is now
benchmark.attention_training.runner; in-package imports are relative and
unchanged; every textual reference across the repo updated).
- qwen3vl_vit is an inference workload (forward-only, bidirectional ViT
self-attention over patch tokens): its config moves to the inference suite
as a context-phase-only InferenceBenchmarkConfig (no generation phase and
no kv-cache axis - an encoder has no KV cache; no TP sweep - the tower is
not head-shardable in deployments). The training-suite config and its
training-schema results are removed; refreshed native inference-schema
results land with the accompanying artifact update.

* sdpa fwd: KV split for the SM100/SM120 prefill kernels (#658)
Add an optional split over the KV sequence: with split_kv > 1 each Q tile's KV
range is cut into contiguous chunks, every chunk runs as its own persistent
tile, and the per-chunk (O, LSE) partials are reduced by
kernels/split_combine_sm100.py. At split_kv == 1 the added closures fold away
and the traced code is unchanged.
Flavors: sm100 d128 (f16/bf16, fp8, mxfp8), d192/128, d256 and d512, plus sm120
f16/bf16. The knob is gated per flavor so a flavor that does not thread it
cannot silently accept it, and the config backstop rejects THD, attention sink
and the flattened scheduler grids.
Also adds an optional cga1 cluster width (cta_mma=1) for d128 and d192/128.
cga1 has no collective MMA to halve per-CTA K/V, so d128 recovers the extra
SMEM through the existing Q/O alias and the fp8 family scales the KV stage
depth with the cluster width.
For the FP8 family the combine also reports amax_o over the recombined O: a
per-split epilogue sees only its own partial, and O is a convex combination of
those, so a max over partials over-reports the output amax.
Measured 3-5x end to end at S_q=128 over a 32K KV run on B200, with numerics
unchanged against both the unsplit kernel and an fp32 reference.
Tests: test/python/sdpa/frost/test_sdpa_fwd_split_kv_sm100.py -- 56 cases over
even and uneven splits (including empty ones), dense / causal / SWA /
bottom-right / padded masks, GQA, bf16, fp8 and mxfp8 at both cluster widths,
the recombined LSE, and amax_o.

* Add block-scaled grouped GEMM + SwiGLU + RHT + NVFP4 quantization fusion for Rubin (#637)
* Add block-scaled grouped GEMM + SwiGLU + RHT + NVFP4 quantization fusion for Rubin
Fused MoE grouped GEMM kernel that computes GEMM + SwiGLU, applies a
random Hadamard transform (RHT), and quantizes the result to NVFP4
(with E4M3 or E5M3 block scale factors) in a single kernel, targeting
Rubin (SM107).
Ported from internal MR 2334. The sf_fp8_dtype_override plumbing it
depended on landed separately in #545.

* Add e5m3 scale-factor coverage to glu_hadamard_quant tests
The kernel plumbs sf_fp8_dtype_override through every entry point but no
test ever passed "e5m3". Mirror the #545 test pattern: reencode the
e4m3-storage input scales as UE5M3 bytes in place (values exact in both
formats, so the fp32 reference stays valid), plus compile-cache
separation and unsupported-override rejection tests.

* test: import torch directly in wgrad Rubin quantization validation test (#660)
test_grouped_gemm_wgrad_rubin_quantization_validation pulled torch off the
API module (api_mod.torch), but wgrad/api.py never binds torch at module
scope — its annotations are strings under 'from __future__ import
annotations' and _is_supported_rubin_quantization imports torch
function-locally. All 7 parametrizations failed with AttributeError in the
oss test jobs (e.g. job 400364559).

* test: fix Rubin dispatch test paths; skip glu_hadamard_quant on cutlass-dsl < 4.8 (#662)
* test: fix stale quant kernel paths in Rubin dispatch test
The Gemm fusion reorganization (#459) moved the grouped quant kernels to
python/cudnn/gemm/cutedsl/grouped/quant/, but
test_grouped_gemm_quant_kernels_support_optional_prob still looked for
them under grouped_gemm_quant/, failing with FileNotFoundError in
oss_tests.

* test: skip glu_hadamard_quant tests on cutlass-dsl < 4.8
The glu_hadamard_quant kernel references cutlass.FloatNV8E5M3FNU
unconditionally at compile time, and that dtype only exists in
cutlass-dsl >= 4.8, so every test in the file failed with an
AttributeError on older builds (13 failures on the 4.5.1 CI lane) even
when the scale-factor dtype under test is e4m3/e8m0. Gate the module
with the same hasattr check _skip_unless_e5m3_supported already uses.
Verified on an SM100 box: cutlass-dsl 4.7.0 without the gate reproduces
the AttributeError, with the gate all 23 tests skip; 4.8.0a0 runs
17 passed / 6 skipped (the pre-existing Rubin-only e5m3 skips).

wrapper's own arch check instead of exercising the ValueError it asserts.
* test(dsa): compare only the effective top-k slice (#672)
When top_k exceeds a row's sequence length, the reference pads the rest of the

differences. Cap both sides at min(top_k, seq_len), which is what the
surrounding comment already described.

* Grouped GEMM: read the TMEM accumulator before releasing the overlapping stage (#654)
The SM100 dSReLU/SReLU/quant grouped-GEMM epilogues call
acc_pipeline.consumer_release() -- publishing the overlapping accumulator stage as
empty -- before issuing the TMEM->register cute.copy of a subtile that still lies
inside the overlap region, so the MMA producer waiting on that mbarrier may overwrite
accumulator columns the epilogue has not read yet.
cute.arch.fence_view_async_tmem_load() cannot cover that load: both of its candidate
lowerings order only prior operations (PTX ISA 9.3 sections 9.7.17.8.5 and
9.7.17.11.1), and the load has not been issued when the fence executes. Section
9.7.17.6.4.4 specifies tcgen05.ld -> tcgen05.wait::ld -> fence -> mbarrier.arrive for
exactly this producer/consumer pair. Eight sibling kernels in the same package already
order it that way; wgrad is the same idiom with the same pipeline object.
Moves the TMEM read above the fence/release in the three SM100 kernels. Pure statement
reorder: the release condition is unchanged, and the loop body is the same multiset of
statements before and after.
Fixes #652

* Fix SM107 grouped GEMM quant: read TMEM accumulator before releasing the overlapping stage (#673)
Apply the same fix as #654 to the Rubin (SM107) kernel
moe_blockscaled_grouped_gemm_quant_rubin.py, which has the identical
pattern: the overlapping accumulator stage was released before the
TMEM->register copy of that stage's subtile, allowing the MMA warp to
overwrite the accumulator while the epilogue was still reading it.
Move the t2r copy ahead of the early-release block so the accumulator
is read before consumer_release.
The other Rubin kernels (glu, glu_hadamard_quant, dglu) already perform
the copy before the release, and wgrad_rubin has overlapping_accum
disabled, so only this file is affected.

* fix: bind a CUDA context on the calling thread — the right one, and on both sides of the boundary (#626)
* fix(device): ensure the RIGHT context, not merely a context
ensure_current_context returned as soon as ANY context was current, so a
thread already bound to another GPU's context kept it. The legacy default
stream (handle 0) carries no context of its own -- it resolves against
whatever is current -- so under a foreign context the work runs on THAT
context's GPU, where the pointers are invalid: an async fault at some later
sync rather than an error at the launch. A real stream does carry its
context and a cross-context launch is rejected outright, so only the
stream-0 path is silent, and stream 0 is exactly what torch's default
stream is.
Resolve the target rather than accept the incumbent: the stream's context
when the stream names one, else the caller's device. execute() passes the
handle's ordinal, so the FE path no longer asks the runtime which GPU it is
on -- Handle.device owns that since #612 -- and cudaGetDevice() stays only
as the fallback for a caller that cannot name a device.
Cost measured on parley: 59 ns per execute in situ, 0.1% of a 79 us GDN op.
test_ensure_current_context.py covers the cold thread, the foreign-device
replacement, stream-wins-over-device, and the steady-state no-op.
* fix(execute): bind a context on the calling thread in C++ too
The same gap on the other side of the boundary. cuDNN's runtime-compiled
engines launch through the driver, which reads the CALLING thread's context
stack, and a thread that has done no CUDA work has nothing on it. Measured on
a matmul+relu+relu graph (which routes to those engines), on a thread where
cuDNN is the first CUDA call:
before: cold #0/#1/#2 ctx 0x0 -> 0x0
cuCtxGetLimit returned error invalid device context (201)
after: cold #0/#1/#2 ctx 0x0 -> 0x3f67f670 OK
Deterministic both ways, and one torch op on the thread beforehand hides it
entirely -- the CUDA runtime binds the primary context as a side effect, and
something normally does, which is why no framework has run into this. The
precompiled engines launch with <<<>>> and are unaffected for the same reason.
Placed at execute_plan_at_index, which the file already documents as the point
all execute overloads funnel through, so backend and OSS paths are both
covered once. Driver entry points are resolved through the runtime
(cudaGetDriverEntryPointByVersion), so the front end still never links
libcuda -- the approach cu_tensor_map_encode_tiled already uses and documents.
Same rung order as the Python side: a bound context is left alone, a real
stream names its own context, and the default-stream handles name none, so the
runtime's device decides there.
Review: the dynamic-loading lookup is non-throwing (get_cuda_symbol throws when
the library or symbol is missing, and this runs in a static initializer),
guarded the way the rest of the headers guard exceptions; the backend test
skips instead of failing where no engine serves the fused graph. Comments
trimmed throughout -- the rationale and the measurements live in the PR.
* build: declare the cuTile runtime as a [cutile] extra
The cuTile linear-attention engines import cuda.tile, which was not declared
anywhere -- not an extra, not requirements.txt -- so whether they run at all
depended on the environment happening to have it. That is also why
test_execute_from_a_thread_with_no_cuda_context silently covers only the FROST
half on most machines: the cuTile engines decline in check_support when the
import fails, and the test skips.
Base cuda-tile only. Its [tileiras] extra pins cuda-toolkit>=13.2,<13.4, and
that upper bound would cap the whole environment's toolkit and shut out CUDA 12
entirely -- the same reason nvidia-cutlass-dsl is not pinned to the FROST floor
here. Without it cuda.tile falls back to a system tileiras, consistent with
this package already leaving GPU wheels to the user.
Resolution checked: `.[cutedsl,cutile]` resolves in one pass and adds exactly
one package (cuda-tile 1.5.0) with nothing downgraded -- base cuda-tile
requires only typing-extensions. The python_version marker keeps the extra
resolvable on the declared 3.9 floor, which cuda-tile itself does not support.
* perf(execute): probe the context before querying the stream
The guard ran cudnnGetStream on every execute, though only the cold path needs
a stream. Probe with one cuCtxGetCurrent instead and fetch the stream only when
a context actually has to be established.
Backend graph.execute() host time on parley, rebuilding the module for each:
develop, no guard 10.805 us
this PR, probe first 10.498 us / 10.683 us (two builds)
The PR measured faster than develop both times, so the difference between
builds is noise -- run-to-run spread alone is ~0.35 us across the 15 samples,
and the guard's one cuCtxGetCurrent is ~106 ns. The unconditional version
measured 10.788 us, i.e. also within noise: cudnnGetStream from C++ is nowhere
near the ~1.5 us the Python path costs through pybind. Probing first is still
the right shape, but it was not buying back a visible regression.
* Fix bug in dglu xfilter math (#568)
* Add a dense BF16 SwiGLU MLP autograd op with fused forward and dSwiGLU backward (#609)
* Prototype: fused dense SwiGLU-MLP autograd op via cuDNN graph (fprop/bprop)
A dense bf16 SwiGLU-MLP as a cuDNN autograd op, for the GEMM owner to review. It
shows what the cuDNN graph fuses today and, with measured B200 numbers, exactly
where a dense fused GEMM+SwiGLU training op is gated.
- forward gate_gemm + up_gemm + SiLU + mul fuse into ONE cuDNN kernel; down GEMM is
separate (a 3-GEMM single graph does not compile).
- backward dSwiGLU runs as fused cuDNN pointwise kernels; a probe shows matmul(dout,Wd)
with the dSwiGLU as a matmul EPILOGUE is ~2.3x the unfused dh-GEMM + elementwise.
- weights enter the GEMMs as strided .t() views (cuDNN reads them column-major); a
materialized .t().contiguous() would add a transpose kernel costing more than the GEMM.
- each graph is autotuned (build ALL plans, time execute_plan_at_index, keep fastest);
on these Qwen3.5 shapes the heuristic top plan is already ~optimal (~1.01x).
Measured vs torch+cuBLAS at the Qwen3.5-27B MLP shape (M2048 H5120 I17408): forward-only
~1.03x, but forward+backward ~0.86x — a regression. The MLP is GEMM-bound and every GEMM
routed through cuDNN pays a per-call tax (plain cuDNN matmul is 0.90-0.96x of torch.mm
from dispatch overhead; cuDNN's own kernels ~13% off cuBLAS), which across 6-8 GEMMs
outweighs the fusion. The lever is GEMM throughput + per-GEMM dispatch, i.e. a
cuBLAS-class fused GEMM+epilogue in one launch — not more fusion.
Numerically matches torch to bf16 noise (fwd + all four gradients).

* Add framework-integration performance guide (avoiding host-overhead traps)
A customer- and internal-facing guide for driving cuDNN Frontend op-by-op from a
framework without leaving performance on the table to host overhead. Distilled from a
measured B200 investigation: the cuDNN backend execute is already at cuBLAS parity
(~8.4us vs ~7.6us for a 256^3 matmul); the gap in a naive integration is avoidable FE
wrapper cost (per-call set_stream, generic execute vs a pinned execute_plan_at_index,
variant-pack/object churn, materialized transposed weights). Covers the traps, the fix
for each, when to CUDA-graph, and how to benchmark (graph replay for kernels, eager for
integration overhead). Companion to the fused SwiGLU-MLP sample in this PR.

- fix the backward comment: _dswiglu runs two cuDNN pointwise kernels (dup, dgate).
- doc: graph replay reports captured-workload GPU time (kernels + in-graph launch), not a
pure kernel-only profile; reserve a profiler for per-kernel numbers.

* gemm: productize the dense SwiGLU-MLP fusion into cudnn.gemm.ops.swiglu_mlp
Move the fused dense bf16 SwiGLU-MLP autograd op out of the #609 sample and into
the GEMM op family as cudnn.gemm.ops.swiglu_mlp, mirroring moe_grouped_matmul:
exported at cudnn.gemm.swiglu_mlp and aliased into cudnn.experimental.ops. The
sample now imports the op and keeps only the demo + the 1-kernel evidence.
out = (silu(x @ Wg^T) * (x @ Wu^T)) @ Wd^T; the forward fuses gate GEMM + up GEMM
+ SiLU + mul into one cuDNN kernel (FORT-native runtime fusion, SM100), the win.
Adds test/python/gemm/test_swiglu_mlp.py (L0, SM100-gated): forward + all four
gradients match torch to bf16 noise, and the fused forward is a single GPU launch.
Verified on SM100 (fwd/grad rel-L2 ~4e-3; 3 passed).
Also folds in the CodeRabbit follow-ups on the moved code: the autotuner now
raises a diagnostic when no plan executes instead of caching a failing index 0,
and the ambiguous single-letter dim name is dropped.

* benchmark(e2e): add a per-model hybrid-LM perf-share, with a SwiGLU-MLP swap
Adds benchmark/e2e/, one folder per model (named by the model, extensible to
Kimi Linear / DeepSeek-V3), with a model-agnostic timing/profiling harness in
_perfshare.py. benchmark/e2e/Qwen3-Next/run_model.py builds flash-linear-attention's
Gated DeltaNet model and profiles a fwd+bwd step by category and backend.
--accelerate_mlp routes the SwiGLU MLP through cudnn.gemm.ops.swiglu_mlp (this PR)
by monkeypatching FLA's bias-free swish GatedMLP.forward; --accelerate_attn routes
linear attention through cudnn.fla (PR #596) when installed. The MLP GEMMs are the
dominant block (~70% at real dims), so this benchmark is where the SwiGLU-MLP op's
e2e effect shows: the forward fusion wins, the fwd+bwd still pays the backward
recompute. Verified end-to-end on SM100 (MLP swap active, perf-share prints).

* gemm: fuse the SwiGLU-MLP backward dgrad + dSwiGLU into one FROST kernel
The backward previously ran the dh = dout @ Wd dgrad GEMM and the dSwiGLU
elementwise (dup = dh*silu(gate), dgate = dh*silu'(gate)*up) as a separate
matmul followed by two cuDNN pointwise kernels. Express the same math as a
cuDNN graph (matmul + swish/swish_backward/mul, two outputs, gate/up as
per-element aux inputs) and JIT it through the FROST cuTeDSL engine, so the
whole stage is ONE bare-launch kernel: no separate elementwise pass, no dh
round-trip to HBM, no per-GEMM FE wrapper tax.
FROST already had every op this needs (swish_backward + per-element aux +
multi-output), so no engine change was required. The FROST TN mainloop needs
B contiguous in K, so the natural I-contiguous down weight is bound as its
K-contiguous [I,H] view.
CUDA-graph kernel time on the Qwen3.5-27B dense MLP shape (SM100, B200):
~1.5x the recompute+pointwise backward and ~1.25x a fair torch backward with
saved pre-activations; ~2x the isolated dh-GEMM + two-pointwise stage. The
forward SwiGLU fusion already wins 1.05-1.20x, so the full training step now
flips to a cuDNN win. Correct to bf16 noise on all four gradients.
Guarded: any unsupported shape/arch falls back to the pointwise path;
CUDNN_GEMM_SWIGLU_FROST_BWD=0 forces the fallback. New test asserts the FROST
backward matches the pointwise path it replaces.

* benchmark(e2e): the SwiGLU-MLP backward is now FROST-fused, a training-step win
Update the perf-share docs: the MLP backward no longer just pays the recompute
+ pointwise cost — it fuses the dgrad GEMM + dSwiGLU into one FROST kernel
(~1.25x vs a fair torch backward, SM100). With the 1.05-1.20x forward fusion,
the MLP is now a training-step win, not only an inference one.

* gemm: address CodeRabbit review on the SwiGLU-MLP op + e2e benchmark
- Keep cudnn.gemm.ops / cudnn.experimental.ops import-lazy: the op modules import
torch, so resolve moe_grouped_matmul / swiglu_mlp via module __getattr__ (mirrors
cudnn/gemm/__init__.py) instead of eagerly. `import cudnn.gemm.ops` no longer pulls
torch; `from cudnn.gemm.ops import swiglu_mlp` and the submodule aliases still resolve.
- swiglu_mlp._autotune: raise if the graph produced zero plans, before max() over an
empty range.
- Shorten the tile-config lookup to a tuple comparison (was exactly 160 cols).
- benchmark/e2e: pick_sm100 now selects SM100-family (100 <= SM < 120) so it does not
grab an SM120 device where the fused engine is absent; the SDPA stand-in pins
SDPBackend.CUDNN_ATTENTION so the full-attention layers are actually counted as cuDNN;
drop an F541 empty f-string.
Not changed (replied on the PR): APIBase is the CuTeDSL kernel-wrapper contract, not the
gemm/ops torch-custom-op layer (sibling moe_grouped_matmul has none either); the L0 gate
with the SM100 device check matches repo convention (no test/python/gemm test uses L1+,
and there is no documented cuDNN-version floor for this op).

* gemm: address GEMM-owner review on the SwiGLU-MLP op
Four issues from @yanqinz2's review:
1. FROST backward is a net LOSS, not a win — turned OFF by default. The measured
"~1.25x vs torch" put the Wd.t().contiguous() transpose OUTSIDE the timed region.
Re-measured with the copy in: the copy (~0.37 ms, ~356 MB traffic on the
Qwen3.5-27B shape) is larger than the fused kernel's saving, so the FROST dgrad+
dSwiGLU backward is 0.83-0.91x the pointwise path. Gated behind
CUDNN_GEMM_SWIGLU_FROST_BWD=1 (default 0) with an honest docstring; it becomes a
win only once FROST accepts an N-major B and the transpose is dropped. Fixed the
comment that called the copy a "view".
2. dtype not enforced -> silent wrong results. Inputs were declared bf16 to cuDNN
unconditionally while the cache key and output carried the input dtype, so an
fp16/fp32 input got reinterpreted as bf16. Validate dtype + device + shapes at the
swiglu_mlp() entry point and raise.
3. Workspace/handle shared across streams -> data race. The cached workspace plus the
one-handle-per-device memo meant two concurrent streams shared one scratch buffer
and one handle (silent grad corruption under DDP comm streams / torch.cuda.stream()
/ multi-threaded backward). Key the handle and every plan/workspace cache by
(device, stream); each stream's handle binds its stream once at creation.
4. benchmark/e2e: "frost"/"cutile" were in the linear-attn CATEGORY table, so the
FROST-served MLP dgrad was miscounted as linear-attention, contaminating the
category-share headline. Removed them — FROST is a backend (already in backend()),
not an op category.
test/python/gemm/test_swiglu_mlp.py: 5 passed on SM100 (B200).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* gemm: drop the unnecessary Wd transpose in the FROST backward
FROST takes arbitrary t/n operand layouts, so the dgrad GEMM consumes the natural
[H,I] down weight directly as an N-major (I-contiguous) B — no transpose needed.
The earlier Wd.t().contiguous() copy (which made the FROST backward a net loss) was
a misdiagnosis: the original N-major-B compile failure was an aux-tensor NAMING
collision (an aux named "g" shadowed a kernel-internal variable), not the layout.
Renaming fixed it; the transpose was collateral and is now removed.
Re-measured (Qwen3.5-27B, SM100, eager): the fused dgrad+dSwiGLU stage now beats the
separate dh GEMM + two pointwise kernels ~1.15-2.64x (was 0.56x with the copy). The
full backward is ~parity with a fair torch backward (0.95-0.97x) because it is
GEMM-bound — the dWd/dWgu/dx GEMMs dominate and are shared. A full-backward win comes
from routing those GEMMs through FROST too, not from any transpose (the dg.t() wgrad
operand is already a free strided view; dense bf16 needs no fused transpose). Still
opt-in via CUDNN_GEMM_SWIGLU_FROST_BWD=1. test_swiglu_mlp.py: 5 passed on SM100.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* gemm: correct the FROST-backward win rationale (save-vs-recompute, not all-FROST)
The full-backward lever is not recomputing gate/up (2 GEMMs, ~25% of the backward) --
save them from the forward. Not all-FROST: host overhead is ~1% of these compute-bound
GEMMs and #612 already cut it; and not a transpose (dg.t() is a free strided view).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Save SwiGLU pre-activations in the fused forward to drop the backward recompute GEMMs
The fused forward already computes gate=x@Wg^T and up=x@Wu^T as the two GEMM
accumulators feeding SiLU*up; emit them as extra outputs of the same fused kernel
(still one kernel on SM100 -- the accumulators land in the epilogue, no copy kernel
appended, verified by a profiler launch count of 1) and read them in the backward
instead of recomputing the two gate/up GEMMs.
Measured Qwen3.5-27B MLP, SM100, real op through autograd:
- backward: 1.29-1.32x faster than the recompute path; 0.99-1.02x vs a torch
autograd MLP (parity), where recompute was 1.29-1.32x slower.
- fwd+bwd: 1.17-1.21x faster than recompute; 0.97-0.99x vs torch, where recompute
was 1.17-1.19x slower.
torch autograd already saves the pre-activations, so recomputing them was a pure
regression; this brings the op back to parity. Saving {h, gate, up} costs ~3x[M,I]
of activation memory, less than the ~4x[M,I] torch autograd keeps. The extra
epilogue stores add ~14% to the forward but remove two full GEMMs (~25% of the
backward). With the pre-activations saved the backward is GEMM-bound, so the opt-in
FROST dgrad+dSwiGLU fusion no longer moves the full backward and stays off by default.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Doc: SwiGLU backward win is save-preact (parity), not the epilogue-fusion stage
The fused forward now emits the pre-activations, so the backward reads them
instead of recomputing two GEMMs -- that is the real backward win (parity with a
torch autograd MLP). The dSwiGLU-as-epilogue fusion is a ~2.3x stage win only in
isolation; the GEMM-bound full backward does not surface it. Measure the whole
step, not the stage.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fuse the backward dSwiGLU into one two-output cuDNN kernel
dup and dgate now come from a single multi-output pointwise graph instead of two
single-output graphs. cuDNN's tensor-ir engine declines multi-output (it logs
"unsupported multi-output fusion"), but another engine serves the graph as one
kernel that reads dh/gate/up once instead of twice and computes sigmoid once.
Measured B200 M8192 dgrad+dSwiGLU stage: the pointwise drops 561us -> 266us (2.1x),
so the stage (nvjet GEMM + pointwise) goes 1441us -> 1146us. End to end through
autograd, the full fwd+bwd step moves from ~parity to ~0.96-0.98x a torch autograd
MLP (Qwen3.5-27B shape). All 5 L0 tests pass; the two outputs match torch to bf16
noise (rel-L2 dup 0.0, dgate 3.6e-6).
The prior docstring claimed a single graph writing both outputs was unsupported;
that was a misread of the tensor-ir engine's per-engine decline -- the graph builds
(5 plans) and runs as one kernel on cuDNN 9.26.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Default the backward to the FROST fused dgrad+dSwiGLU path
CUDNN_GEMM_SWIGLU_FROST_BWD now defaults to on (set =0 for the pointwise path).
On this dense bf16 shape the FROST fused kernel (dh GEMM + dup/dgate epilogue in one
cuTeDSL kernel, dh never materialised to HBM) ties the separate nvjet GEMM +
one-kernel pointwise (~1.15ms each, B200 M8192 stage) -- ~1% behind only because its
cuTeDSL GEMM trails nvjet. Making it the default keeps it exercised (verified it runs
through autograd, not silently falling back) so the GEMM gap can be closed, and the
fusion advantage grows as the workload gets pointwise-heavier (fp8 halves the GEMM
and adds quant/scale pointwise; MoE grouped GEMMs are smaller and more memory-bound).
Falls back to the pointwise path on any FROST exception, so correctness is unchanged;
5/5 L0 tests pass with it on. Handoff for follow-up: HANDOFF_2026-08-19_frost_swiglu_bwd_for_yanqin.md.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Docstrings: FROST backward is now the default, not opt-in (stale wording)
Update the module docstring and _frost_dswiglu docstring to match aaa8bbf6a: FROST is
the default backward stage (set =0 for pointwise), it TIES the one-kernel pointwise on
dense bf16 (~1% behind on the cuTeDSL GEMM, not a loss vs the old 2-kernel baseline),
tile autotune does not help, and the fusion advantage grows on fp8/MoE.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Docstring: state the fwd+bwd win as 1.02-1.04x faster (not 0.96-0.98x)
A ratio <1 reads as slower; express it as a speedup.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* gemm: pin FROST dSwiGLU to the B200 2-CTA tactic
Use the measured M128/N256/K128 cluster2x1 2CTAMMA CLC strategy for large-M fused dgrad+dSwiGLU kernels. Keep the existing 1-CTA strategy for small M and update the stale geometry-only tuning notes.
* gemm: skip unused SwiGLU MLP gradients and saved activations
Snapshot GradMode and per-input requires_grad at the public call boundary. Select an h-only forward graph when preactivations are unnecessary, save only tensors consumed by the requested input gradients, and skip unrelated backward GEMMs. Cover inference, frozen/partial gradients, cache switching, saved-tensor behavior, and checkpoint semantics.

* benchmark: add a Torch SDPA baseline for Qwen3.8

* SDPA: drop the legacy standalone d=256 fwd/bwd stacks; port SM80 forward to the SdpaFwdDsl adapter path (#682)
* [SDPA] Remove the legacy standalone d=256 SM100 fwd/bwd stacks
- delete fmha_forward_sm100_d256.py and the 3-kernel backward family
(fmha_backward_sm100_2kernel.py, fmha_dq_d256_sm100.py, fmha_dkdv_d256_sm100.py)
- remove SdpafwdSm100D256 / SdpabwdSm100D256 + their wrappers from
sdpa/{fwd,bwd}/api.py and every lazy-export map
- experimental torch op: drop the cudnn::sdpa_{fwd,bwd}_d256 custom ops and
the pre-9.23-backend OSS routing; d=256 always takes the backend graph path
- docs (Attention.md, llms.txt, fe-oss-apis pages) and tests updated; the op
tests now skip d=256 on backends < 9.23 instead of exercising the OSS route
The graph-dispatched sdpa_fwd_prefill_sm100_d256 FROST engine is unaffected
and remains the OSS forward implementation for this cell. The standalone OSS
SM100 backward (never graph-reachable) goes away until sdpa/bwd grows an
SM100 ENGINE_SPECS row.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] Port the SM80 forward onto the SdpaFwdDsl adapter path
SM80 now follows the SM100/SM120 lowering shape exactly: one adapter class
(SdpaFwdDslSm80 in api_dsl.py) implementing the SdpaFwdDsl contract, lowered
through lower_dsl_prefill; fwd/api.py is deleted.
- SdpaFwdDslSm80: descriptor-level check_support (flavor pick, mask/scheduler
resolution, knob mapping), no-op compile (the kernels self-cache), and an
execute that binds the caller's O/LSE/score buffers directly
- kernels gain optional out_o/out_lse/out_score_* binding; outputs a feature
path never writes (seq_len_q trim, zero-length padded batches, block-masked
rows) keep their zero-init semantics via a conditional zero-fill
- the engine path drops its per-execute copy-backs; dense GQA keeps the
adapter-side head expansion until the kernels' native dense-GQA path is
qualified (see graph_analyzer.expand_gqa_heads)
- _sm80_spec lowers via partial(lower_dsl_prefill, api_type=_SM80), declares
dense_seq_q_trim (the kernels are plumbed) and lse_optional
- lower_dsl_prefill forwards SM80 feature operands (bias/alibi/block_mask/
score stats) only to adapters declaring the keywords
- _torch_stream_context gains the NGC ExternalStream(0/1/2) silent-no-op
workaround previously present only in the deleted api.py copy
- sdpa_fwd_wrapper_sm80 keeps its public signature (dense via the adapter,
packed THD via the kernel varlen path); SdpafwdSm80 is replaced by
SdpaFwdDslSm80 (experimental API, tests updated)
- AGENTS.md Rule-3 known-violation list updated: the ragged cache-key max()
sites died with the legacy wrappers
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] SM80 adapter: accept (B, H, S, 1) graph Stats/score views
The graph API declares Stats and score outputs as (B, H, S, 1); the SM80
kernels write [B, H, SQ]. Rebind the squeezed view (zero-cost, same storage)
before output binding — caught by the A100 graph-path check (dense causal +
Stats through sdpa_fwd_prefill_sm80).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] SM80: drop ALiBi / block_mask / score-stat support from the FROST path
Graphs requesting ALiBi, block_mask, or the score_max / score_sum_exp side
outputs now decline at the sdpa_fwd_prefill_sm80 capability row and are served
by the cuDNN backend, like the other features the FROST rows deliberately do
not carry (dropout, paged_kv, ...). The Capabilities fields themselves stay —
they are the decline gates mismatch() compares every graph against.
Removed end to end:
- capability row: alibi/block_mask/score_max/score_sum_exp flags
- lower_dsl_prefill: the operand plumbing (bias remains the one SM80 extra)
- SdpaFwdDslSm80.execute + sdpa_fwd_wrapper_sm80 + the THD path: the
corresponding keywords, allocs, unpack branches and copy-backs
- both SM80 kernels (~-520 lines): host params, compile-key flags, fake
tensors, and every const_expr-gated device block; RESCALE_THRESHOLD
collapses to its flag-off value (8.0) and the block-mask hybrid guard to
the unconditional dense form, keeping surviving traces byte-identical
Re-validated on A100 (parley): fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd all levels 105/105; the
graph-path e2e (dense+Stats x2, GQA, padded) passes; a new negative check
confirms an ALiBi graph lists no FROST entry and runs on the backend.
SM100 frontend integration re-run green (10 passed).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] SM80 backward: drop ALiBi / block_mask support from the FROST path
Same treatment as the forward row (previous commit): graphs requesting ALiBi
or block_mask decline at the sdpa_bwd_sm80 capability row and are served by
the cuDNN backend. dBias (and bias, sinks/dSink, RoPE, deterministic, THD)
remain fully served — the bprop kernel's dbias footprint is byte-unchanged.
Removed end to end (-95 kernel lines, -~60 adapter/wrapper lines):
- capability row: alibi/block_mask flags (the Capabilities fields stay — they
are the decline gates mismatch() compares every graph against)
- lower_sm80_bwd binding: the block_mask operand
- SdpabwdSm80.execute / sdpa_bwd_wrapper_sm80 / _thd_backward / the d64
fast-path gate: the corresponding keywords, slopes setup, cache-key entries
- bprop_f16_sm80.py: host params, compile-key flags, fake tensors, and every
const_expr-gated device block (alibi S-injection, block-mask P-multiply);
all pure block deletions, no collapse rewrites needed
Re-validated on A100 (parley): fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd all levels 105/105;
graph-path e2e + the alibi negative-routing check pass.

* test(sdpa/frost): add the SM80 integration suite with O layout declared
Imports the SM80 frontend-integration test (registration, probe, graph-level
fwd/bwd end-to-end) from the internal suite, with one fix: _build_fwd_graph
now declares O's dim/stride like the SM100 sibling test does.
Without the declaration, backend layout inference declares O
BHSD-contiguous while the e2e tests read their buffer through BSHD-physical
torch strides. A variant-pack entry is raw storage per the IR descriptor
(lower_dsl_prefill's _ir_view; the C++ backend only ever sees raw pointers),
so any contract-honoring engine writes the declared layout and the read
scrambles — pinning the NATIVE eng8 plan on the undeclared graph fails
identically (97.8% mismatch) on an A100. The old standalone-api.py SM80
lowering honored torch strides instead, masking the under-declaration; this
PR's adapter follows the contract. With the declaration the file passes 8/8
on A100-PCIE-40GB.

* review: drop the block_on artifact and the caps not-served comments
Addresses egilliam-nv's PR-682 review:
- prefill_{f16,d256_f16}_sm80.py: remove the vestigial block_on = True and
its if-guards outright (the block_mask removal had kept them to avoid
re-indenting the traced body). This also removes the QK sites' orphaned
else branches (the fully-masked-block dead path) — the last block_mask
remnant in the mainloop.
- sdpa/{fwd,bwd}/engines.py: drop the 'ALiBi / block_mask ... deliberately
NOT served' annotations from the _sm80_spec rows — capability rows stay
comment-free like every other engine; the public wrapper/adapter
docstrings keep the user-facing unsupported-features note.
Re-validated on A100 (parley): fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd all levels + the SM80
integration suite — 113/113 passed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] SM80: fix dropped O columns for d_qk < d_v envelope graphs
The V tile loads passed the shared valid_cols (= the runtime Q/K head dim)
to load_tile_2d, zero-filling V columns [D, d_v) whenever a graph declared
d_qk < d_v inside a flavor envelope (e.g. 96/128 on llama) — so O's tail
columns computed as P*0 and returned zeros where the reference has real
values. The O-store epilogue's matching column trim on d_runtime hid the
same range. Pre-existing bug (the old zeros-allocated output made it look
intentional); surfaced by review on the out-binding path.
- V loads now use valid_cols=None: V is always exactly the compile-time d_v
wide (asserted; the adapter pads it up), so no column predication applies.
- The O store now trims rows only (sq_store_bound); columns are always the
full d_v (padded-V columns compute to exact zero, so storing them is
correct in the uniform-envelope case too).
- The out_* zero-fill comment is reworded as DEFENSIVE per review: the dense
epilogue stores every in-bounds row unconditionally, so nothing relies on
zero-init; the gate stays as insurance.
The bwd kernel is unaffected (it host-pads Q/K/V rather than predicating
loads). Verified on A100: (d_qk=96, d_v=128) now matches torch on the full
width (was: cols [96,128) all-zero, ref absmax 3.06); fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd
all levels + the SM80 integration suite: 113/113.

* review: harden the SM80 adapter and reserve cudnn.sdpa for arch-agnostic wrappers
Review batch for PR-682, shaped by the target design (one adapter layer,
shared validation vocabulary, one future arch-agnostic entry point):
- SdpaFwdDslSm80.check_support gains the same dense_layout_ok stride gate as
the SM100/SM120 adapters (broadcast / overlapping / non-innermost-D
layouts decline with a typed error instead of silently normalizing wrong)
- execute() binds seq lens and sinks through the shared _checked_seq_lens /
_checked_sinks_1d validators (an int64 caller tensor now fails fast
instead of triggering a hidden cast kernel per execute)
- the wrapper's THD branch rejects causal_bottom_right without an anchor
with the same ValueError the dense check_support raises (was a kernel
AssertionError)
- comment/doc fixes: the dense padded-Q trim writes O := 0 / LSE := -inf
explicitly (never relied on zero-init); the bwd wrapper documents its
optional dsink_tensor output
cudnn.sdpa no longer re-exports the per-arch APIs: that level is reserved
for the coming arch-agnostic sdpa_{fwd,bwd}_wrapper entry points, and the
per-arch adapters/wrappers — the pinning tier — are imported from
cudnn.sdpa.fwd / cudnn.sdpa.bwd directly (tests and the sm120 doc example,
which had been referencing a never-exported name, updated).
A100 (parley): fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd all levels + SM80 integration: 113/113.

* [SDPA] SM80 fwd: TemplateParams kernels, plan-time compile, sym_int THD extents (#689)
* [SDPA] SM80 fwd: convert kernels to TemplateParams modules, compile at plan time
Bring the SM80 forward onto the same template architecture as SM100/SM120:
- Both kernels (prefill_f16_sm80.py, prefill_d256_f16_sm80.py) now read a
module-level FROST_TEMPLATE_PARAMS (frozen TemplateParams dataclass in
config_sm80.py) and expose an @lru_cache compile(b, h, h_kv, sq, skv, d,
...) entry point; the runtime forward() shim and __main__ smoke are gone
(-350 lines each).
- Packed THD token extents compile as cute.sym_int dynamics: one artifact
per (params, n_seqs) serves any token totals, so continuous batching no
longer mints a compile per step (issue #604 for SM80).
- has_lse is a template flag: has_lse=False builds a kernel with no LSE
buffer or epilogue stores at all instead of writing to a scratch dummy.
- Scheduler vocabulary now imports from frost.tile_dsl.constants
(SCHED_NATURAL/LPT/LPT_L2) instead of a third private copy.
- SdpaFwdDslSm80 builds TemplateParams from graph facts in compile() and
loads the specialized module via frost.template_loader (plan-time JIT,
same seam as SdpaFwdDslSm100); execute() only rebinds pointers.
- lower_dsl_prefill passes bias presence/dtype to adapters that accept it.
Validated on A100 (fe_api sm80 fwd+bwd + frontend integration, all levels)
and B200 (frontend integration, unaffected).

* [SDPA] SM80: THD compile-key regression test (issue #604)
Three varlen wrapper calls with different token totals must not mint new
template specializations and must cache-hit the per-shape compile when the
logical batch count repeats. Asserts on cache-info deltas so the check is
robust inside a full-session run.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [SDPA] SM80: address CodeRabbit review on the template conversion
- THD off-flavor head dim (real bug): Q/K are host-padded to the flavor
width, but compile/runtime d stayed at the unpadded value; since the
kernel derives Q/K row strides from d_runtime, the compiled artifact's
shape check rejected every off-flavor varlen call. Pass the padded width
at both seams (the pre-template forward() contract) and add an L1
regression test (d=96 over the llama d=128 envelope).
- Drop the SM80 _dummy override that shadowed SdpaFwdDsl._dummy with an
incompatible signature; the six call sites now use the inherited
(key, device, factory) form like the sibling adapters.

* sdpa: add torch custom ops cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd
Family-local torch contract for the features
torch.nn.functional.scaled_dot_product_attention cannot express: attention
sinks, sliding window, bottom-right causal, padded batches, and THD/varlen
packing (FA-style (T,H,D) + cu_seqlens). The ops build pygraph
sdpa/sdpa_backward nodes; the Router picks the serving plan (FROST OSS
kernels or backend engines) per config.
Contract highlights:
- register_fake meta kernels mirror the real kernels' output strides;
torch.library.opcheck passes on both paths, including dynamic-shape AOT
dispatch (torch.compile contract), and is locked in by a test.
- sdpa_fwd is differentiable on the varlen path via register_autograd; the
glue converts packed TH1 stats to the padded LSE layout device-side (no
host reads, capture/tracing-safe). Dense and sink backward raise
NotImplementedError until their engine contracts land.
- Thread-safe: thread-local cuDNN handles (a handle must not be used from
two threads), serialized graph builds, bounded (FIFO) graph cache.
- Validation: one io dtype per call, k/o/grad_out shape checks, int32
ragged-offset overflow guards, inert-flag rejection
(causal_bottom_right without an active band), clone() not contiguous()
for base-pointer realignment (contiguous() cannot fix a misaligned base).
cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd are the canonical names; the experimental
dense module's backward is renamed cudnn::sdpa_bwd_legacy so both modules
coexist in one process until it is removed.
Tests (14, L0): sinks/window/bottom-right/padded dense with LSE value
checks against an fp32 reference; THD fwd/bwd incl. GQA, kv-interleaved
views, end-to-end autograd; opcheck. Docs: docs/fe-oss-apis/sdpa-torch-ops.md.

* test(sdpa): drop the #613 xfail from test_thd_kv_packed_views
The span-derived THD capacity landed on develop in 3631ecb44, so K/V bound
as views of a kv-interleaved [T, 2, H, D] buffer are served correctly
rather than silently truncated. The test XPASSes; unmark it.

* refactor(sdpa): remove the experimental SDPA torch op
`cudnn.experimental.ops.sdpa` predates the family-local torch custom ops in
`python/cudnn/sdpa/fwd/torch_op.py` (#517) and duplicates them: it registers
its own `cudnn::sdpa` plus a backward that had to be renamed
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd_legacy` purely to avoid colliding with the canonical
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd`. Removing it retires that collision and the rename with it.
Removed:
- `python/cudnn/experimental/ops/sdpa.py` and its
`scaled_dot_product_attention` export. The package itself stays -- it still
hosts the lazy `moe_grouped_matmul` / `swiglu_mlp` aliases.
- `test/python/test_cudnn_sdpa_op.py` (16 tests covering only this op).
- The "SDPA PyTorch Custom Op (Experimental)" section of
docs/operations/Attention.md, the README bullet, and the stale `sdpa.py`
example reference in docs/adding_torch_custom_ops.md.
The three e2e benchmarks that used it now call `torch.ops.cudnn.sdpa_fwd`
directly. Both arms are inference-only (`requires_grad_(False)`, no
`.backward()`), and the op covers what they need: Qwen-Image passes
`seq_len_q`/`seq_len_kv` (padded), Qwen3.8 runs the full causal window
(`window_size` defaults to `(-1, -1)`, and its torch A/B arm already rejects
anything else). Both now raise explicitly on `dropout_p`, and Qwen3.8 raises
on a right window bound, rather than silently ignoring either.
Stacked on #517 because of that last part: the benchmarks cannot move off the
experimental op until its replacement exists, so this must merge after it.
Verified: `cudnn` and `cudnn.experimental.ops` import cleanly with the lazy
moe/swiglu aliases intact and `scaled_dot_product_attention` gone; all three
benchmark scripts compile; `test_cudnn_sdpa_torch_ops.py` 19 passed; full
test/python collection clean (54773 collected, no import errors).

* docs/test: fold the torch-op docs into Attention.md, move the test under sdpa/
Review feedback from @Anerudhan:
- The torch ops are another entry point to the same attention op, so their
docs should not live in a separate directory. `docs/fe-oss-apis/sdpa-torch-ops.md`
is gone; its content is now the "SDPA PyTorch Custom Ops" section of
docs/operations/Attention.md, alongside the FP16/BF16 and FP8 sections, with
its own anchor. Nothing linked the old file, so no dangling references.
- Tests move to `test/python/sdpa/test_torch_ops.py` — modularized by op under
the sdpa/ tree rather than one flat file per feature.
Note the `test_` prefix: pytest.ini sets no `python_files` override, so
collection is the default `test_*.py`. `test/python/sdpa/` is deliberately
the *helpers* package (fp16.py, helpers.py, random_config.py are imported,
never collected), and every real test under it is `test_*.py` (see
sdpa/frost/). A file named exactly `torch_ops.py` would have silently
stopped being collected — all 19 tests would have gone quiet. Verified the
new path yields 19 tests both when targeted directly and in the default
full-directory sweep.
Also folds in a CodeRabbit finding on the same code: `_check_same_device`
received only the auxiliary operands, so a `k`/`v`/`o` on a different CUDA
device reached cuDNN as a foreign pointer and faulted with an illegal memory
access instead of the helper's clear error. Both call sites now pass the io
tensors too.
Verified: 19 passed at the new path; black clean across test/ python/ benchmark/.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(sdpa): address review findings on the torch ops
- **Benchmarks passed `scale=None` into a `float` schema.** Both rewired
adapters keep torch's `scale=None` ("use the default") convention, but
`cudnn::sdpa_fwd` takes a required `float attn_scale`, so the default path
would have raised at dispatch. Resolve to `head_dim ** -0.5` first. Caught
by review; the old experimental wrapper accepted None and defaulted
internally, so this was introduced when the benchmarks moved over.
- **Gate the sink tests on cuDNN >= 9.13.** `scaled_dot_product_flash_attention.h`
rejects `sink_token` below 9.13 ("SDPA with sink_token is not supported
before 9.13."), while the module gate only needs 9.6 for token-major THD
stats — so `test_sinks` / `test_sinks_with_window` would fail rather than
skip on a 9.6-9.12 backend.
- **Docs example was not differentiable.** `cudnn.sdpa_torch` defaults to
`return_lse=False`, which the THD backward rejects; the wrapper example sat
in the autograd block without it. Ask for the stats explicitly.
- **RUF059**: use the already-unpacked `T_q` instead of re-reading
`q.shape[0]` two lines later (same branch, same normalized `q`).
Verified: 19 passed; all three benchmark scripts compile; black clean across
test/ python/ benchmark/.

* frost(sdpa): port the SM80 backward onto SdpaBwdDsl + TemplateParams with sym_int THD extents (issue #604) (#765)
* [SDPA] Port the SM80 backward onto the SdpaBwdDsl adapter path
SM80 now follows the SM120 backward lowering shape exactly (design doc S5 /
F-3, the backward analogue of #682): one adapter class (SdpaBwdDslSm80 in
api_dsl.py) implementing the SdpaBwdDsl contract, lowered through the shared
lower_dsl_bwd; bwd/api.py is deleted.
- SdpaBwdDslSm80: descriptor-level check_support (flavor pick, mask
resolution, dense_flex + strided-stats acceptance), no-op compile (the
kernels self-cache until the TemplateParams conversion), execute with the
full issue #514 carving (pad/gather staging, strided-stats gather, kernel
workspace tail) and the d64 fast-path routing. SM80-only operands (bias ->
dBias, RoPE) are extra optional keywords, as the contract permits.
- lower_dsl_bwd is parameterized by api_type (mirrors lower_dsl_prefill) and
now drives both backward cells; SM80-only constructor facts and execute
operands forward via signature introspection, so the SM120 adapter is
untouched. lower_sm80_bwd (the plan-time APIBase half-way house) is gone.
- sdpa_bwd_wrapper_sm80 keeps its public signature (dense via the adapter,
packed THD via the kernel varlen path); SdpabwdSm80 is replaced by
SdpaBwdDslSm80 (experimental API, exports/tests updated).
- The SM80 suites declare their backward output strides explicitly: the
shared lowering honors DECLARED port geometry (IR-inferred output strides
are provisional row-major -- the layout invariant), where the old adapter
leniently trusted caller tensor metadata.
Verified on A100: SM80 suites all levels 118 passed; test_mhas_v2 fwd+bwd
L0 = 421/0 at 100% FROST routing (fwd 623, bwd 176) through the ported path.

* frost(sdpa): convert the SM80 backward kernel to a TemplateParams module (issue #604)
The #689 analogue for the backward: bprop_f16_sm80 becomes a TemplateParams
template (bwd/config_sm80 params + validator) loaded per-specialization via
frost.template_loader, with one module-level compile(...) per shape returning
the full kernel chain (do_dot / main / dQ cast / GQA reduces / dSink); the
host backward() entry point is gone — launch marshaling lives in the adapter
(SdpaBwdDslSm80.compile/execute) and the THD functional wrapper.
THD packed token totals compile as cute.sym_int DYNAMICS (issue #604): one
artifact per (params, n_seqs) re-binds any token totals — the static
PARTIAL_Q/PARTIAL_KV gates fold False under THD_VARLEN (per-sequence bounds
ride GATE_Q/GATE_KV), and THD+deterministic is now rejected in the validator
(the dQ-relay semaphore has no plan-time size under a dynamic sq).
Also: RoPE preconditions the old backward() asserted move to the adapter
(rope_max_s coverage, tile alignment) and rope_max_s now reaches the plan
(it's part of the compiled table's shape); the d64 fast path keeps its
dedicated self-caching module (dense-only) and the d64-vs-generic test runs
the generic side through the adapter with the gate forced off; a bwd twin of
the THD compile-key regression test guards the plan-time-only key.
Dead code deleted: the legacy per-piece _compile_* wrappers (except
_compile_do_dot, which d64 imports) and the module dummy cache.
Closes #604.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* review: THD must compile at the flavor envelope dims, not the template defaults
CodeRabbit critical on the TemplateParams port: bwd_params_for_flavor seeded
only the tile geometry from the flavor's Cfg row, so the THD wrapper's
flavor-name-only params build left d_qk/d_v at the 128/128 template defaults
while the host padded the buffers to the flavor envelope — OOB grad writes at
d=64, wrong gradients at 192/256 (dense was unaffected: the adapter passes
the dims explicitly). Fix on both sides: the THD wrapper now passes
d_qk/d_v = the envelope dims (on the llama-swept tiles, matching the dense
adapter's unwired-gptoss-row policy), and bwd_params_for_flavor seeds
d_qk/d_v from the Cfg row so a flavor name alone can never mix one flavor's
tiles with another's head dims.
Tests: new test_sm80_bwd_thd_flavor_envelope_dims (d=64 and 192/128 THD vs
the dense per-sequence reference); the compile-key regression now validates
the re-bound artifact's gradients on its same-batch-count call (per-sequence
reference) and uses a genuinely different token total ([64,256] vs [96,160]).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* review: Ruff-clean per-sequence reference + tight counter window on the re-bind call
Two CodeRabbit minors on the THD test hardening: the per-sequence reference
loop's assigned lambda (E731, loop-var capture B023, unused s_len) becomes a
nested function with bound slice offsets, and the compile-cache regression
now brackets the same-batch-count re-bind call with its own counter window —
it must be a PURE cache hit (zero misses), not netted against the n_seqs=3
call's legitimate re-specialization.

* benchmark(sdpa): fall back to CUDA-event timing when CUPTI cannot attach (#824)
* benchmark(sdpa): fall back to CUDA-event timing when CUPTI cannot attach
`benchmark_single_sdpa.py` measures exclusively through `torch.profiler`,
i.e. through CUPTI. When CUPTI cannot attach, the profiler records no CUDA
events and the harness raises, so the benchmark cannot produce a number on
that machine at all:
RuntimeError: torch.profiler recorded no CUDA events for the forward pass
(CUPTI init failure?); refusing to emit unusable timings
Refusing to emit a silent 0.000 ms row is right; refusing to measure at all
is not. Fall back to CUDA-event timing of the same region instead.
The two are NOT the same measurement -- CUPTI reports summed DEVICE time of
the matched kernels, events report WALL time of the region including launch
overhead -- so the fallback is deliberately loud rather than transparent:
* a one-time warning on stderr,
* a `[cuda-events]` tag on the result line, so a fallback number can never
be mistaken for, or tabulated against, a CUPTI-timed one.
Once CUPTI is known unavailable the profiler is skipped entirely, so there
is exactly one execution per iteration. Both the profiled and the event path
call a single `_run_forward_once()` helper, which assigns the module-level
`output` so the non-cuDNN backends are not run twice per iteration merely to
retrieve it for the backward pass.
Behaviour where CUPTI works is unchanged, including the existing hard error
for "events were recorded but none matched the kernel-name filters" -- that
one is a real bug and must keep failing loudly.
Scope: forward pass only. The backward path still requires CUPTI; timing it
with events needs the same single-execution restructuring, since re-running
a backward would double-accumulate gradients.
* benchmark(sdpa): gate the CUPTI fallback on device time, not on event count
Review follow-up. The fallback was gated on `not prof.key_averages()`, i.e.
"the profiler recorded nothing at all". That is the wrong test: even a healthy
profiler reports CUDA runtime-API entries -- cudaMalloc, cudaLaunchKernel,
cudaFree, ... -- which carry `device_time == 0` alongside the real kernel
activity. Measured on A100: 14 entries, 13 of them with zero device time.
So a machine where CUPTI attaches but collects no device activity would have
taken the `else` branch and raised the "none matched the kernel-name filters"
error, which points the reader at a missing filter prefix rather than at CUPTI.
Gate on device time instead:
device_events = [item for item in prof.key_averages() if item.device_time > 0]
Falling back only when no device time was recorded anywhere also preserves the
property the previous branch already had, and which the review asked to keep:
a run that DID record kernels but matched no name filter still raises, and is
never silently re-timed as a wider region.
No behaviour change on either path that was already exercised: A100 (CUPTI
alive) still reports untagged CUPTI timings, bit-identical at 1.386 ms / 99
TFLOPS (cudnn) and 1.413 ms / 97 TFLOPS (cudnn_oss); the CUPTI-less machine
still falls back, 0.651 ms / 3379 TFLOPS.
* Sdpa native strides (#795)
* benchmark(attention_training): sum device_time_total for kernel time
key_averages() aggregates by kernel name and device_time is the per-occurrence
mean, so a kernel launched more than once per pass was counted a single time.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* benchmark(attention_inference): match the training suite's timing and layout
Time with the torch profiler, an L2 flush per iteration and the same
kernel-name filter the training suite uses, summing device_time_total rather
than device_time. One methodology across the suites is what makes a row here
comparable to a training row.
Allocate the cuDNN operands (B, S, H, D) and transpose to the logical
(B, H, S, D) the graph takes. Same logical tensor, but the physical order now
matches what a fused QKV projection produces, what the training suite
measures, and what every other backend in this file already allocates --
head-major storage was handing cuDNN a different memory layout from the
backends it is compared against.

* torch: put torch.sdpa on the cuDNN Python API (CUDNN provider + dense backward) (#554)
* torch: add the "CUDNN" torch.nn.attention provider (cudnn.torch)
Graduates the PyTorch-integration bridge into the wheel. Importing
cudnn.torch registers the "CUDNN" provider with torch.nn.attention's
flash-attention implementation registry (PyTorch 2.13+, the same mechanism
FA3/FA4 use); activation stays explicit:
import cudnn.torch
torch.nn.attention.activate_flash_attention_impl("CUDNN")
After activation, F.scaled_dot_product_attention's cuDNN backend and
torch.nn.attention.varlen.varlen_attn run on the cuDNN Python API via the
cudnn::sdpa_fwd / sdpa_bwd custom ops, with hybrid fallback to the existing
implementations for what the python path does not serve yet: dense
bias/dropout forwards, every dense backward (until dense lands in
cudnn::sdpa_bwd), and paged/asymmetric-window varlen (stock flash kernels).
Dense forwards adopt the query's layout permutation. Unlike the in-tree
cuDNN varlen branch, the provider serves GQA and causal sliding windows.
restore_flash_attention_impl() reverts; torch < 2.13 uses install().
No dependency on the experimental ops module. The [cutedsl] import boundary
is preserved (import cudnn stays torch-free; cudnn.torch is explicit
opt-in). Stacked on the cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd ops PR.

* fix(torch): drop the 2*B D2H syncs from the varlen backward
`_varlen_bwd` repadded the packed LSE with
for i in range(B):
a, b = int(cu_seq_q[i]), int(cu_seq_q[i + 1])
Each `int(cu_seq_q[i])` on a CUDA tensor is a blocking `cudaMemcpy`, so the
provider stalled the host 2*B times, serially, before the backward kernel was
even launched — an async-launch API turned synchronous, and un-capturable
under a CUDA graph. python/cudnn/AGENTS.md Rule 3 calls this out as a
functional gap rather than a slow path.
The irony is that the correct version already existed: the autograd glue in
torch_op.py does the same conversion device-side with `searchsorted`, written
that way to stay traceable under dynamic-shape AOT dispatch. The provider had
a second, worse copy of the same logic. Extracted the good one as
`thd_lse_to_padded(lse_th, cu_seqlens_q, max_seqlen_q)` and pointed both call
sites at it, so there is one implementation.
Note the idiom that hid this: AGENTS.md names `.item()` / `.tolist()` /
`.cpu()` / `.to("cpu")` / `.numpy()`, and a grep for those over
sdpa_provider.py comes back empty. `int(tensor[i])` is the same blocking copy
wearing different clothes.
Verified: the helper's output is bit-identical to the old loop
(`torch.equal`), and `torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")` reports no
sync through the whole backward. New `test_varlen_backward_does_not_sync`
locks it in — confirmed RED against the restored host loop, green with the
helper. Provider 17 passed, ops 19 passed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* docs(agents): make the no-D2H rule verifiable, not just greppable
Rule 3 already names `int(tensor)` alongside `.item()` — the miss on the
varlen backward was not a gap in the rule, it was a reviewer (me) grepping a
subset of the spellings and concluding "clean". A list of spellings cannot be
a detector.
Adds two things learned from that bug:
- **Prove it.** `torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")` turns any blocking
D2H into a RuntimeError; wrap the execute/backward in it and keep the
assertion as a test. And check the test is RED against the old code first —
a sync test never seen to fail asserts nothing.
- **Suspect duplicated logic.** Every violation found so far has been a second
copy of a conversion that was already device-side elsewhere. Extract the
correct one instead of writing the obvious loop again.

* feat(sdpa): dense BHSD backward in cudnn::sdpa_bwd
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd` served only the packed THD/varlen path; dense
`(B, H, S, D)` raised NotImplementedError. That left the provider's dense
training half on the Python API — forward through `cudnn::sdpa_fwd`,
backward falling back to the C++ worker `aten::_cudnn_attention_backward`
(the provider counts it as `calls["bwd_cpp"]`). This wires the dense path so
the whole step builds its graph in Python.
`_build_bwd_graph` gains `is_thd`, mirroring the forward builder. Dense
differs in three ways, all of them contract rather than kernel:
- no ragged-offset tensors and no per-batch length operands — an unpadded
dense batch has every sequence at its declared S;
- no `max_total_seq_len_q/kv`: those size the ragged dq accumulator and the
node rejects them on a non-ragged layout (#740);
- dQ/dK/dV adopt the caller's Q/K/V layouts via `_like_layout_stride`,
because autograd hands them straight back as `.grad` on the caller's
parameters. THD keeps returning them packed.
Stats need no conversion on this path: dense LSE already is
`(B, H, S, 1)` fp32, which is exactly aten's logsumexp layout for
`_scaled_dot_product_cudnn_attention`, so `register_autograd` forwards the
forward's stats untouched instead of running the THD scatter.
The fake kernel now mirrors the dense gradient strides (the inputs'
permutation, not contiguous) — otherwise opcheck's stride assertions fail
under AOT dispatch.
Still raising: sink backward (dSink), and dense backward with per-batch
lengths (the padded dense path).
Tests: six new cases in `TestSdpaBwdDense` — causal/non-causal against an
fp32 reference, GQA with h_kv < h_q, end-to-end autograd, a layout check
that dQ/dK/dV come back in their input's permutation, and opcheck on the
dense backward. They compare RELATIVE to each tensor's magnitude: GQA dK/dV
sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so a fixed absolute bound flags a correct
result purely because the values got bigger (~0.5% relative on every tensor,
but |dv| peaks near 9.6 at a group size of 4).
Verified on SM100 (cuDNN 9.26.0.33): 25 passed, all 19 pre-existing THD
tests unchanged. NOT yet verified against a FROST backward engine — those
exist only for SM120 and SM80, and neither box is reachable from here; on
SM100 the Router serves this through cuDNN-backend engines, which is still
the Python API but not an OSS kernel.

* fix(sdpa): normalize dense operands; forward the deterministic flag
Review follow-ups on the dense backward, plus a pre-existing gap the first
one turned up.
**Dense operands were never normalized.** The descriptor contract — innermost
dim dense, base pointer 16B-aligned — was enforced only for THD, via
`_normalize_thd`. A dense BHSD tensor with a strided last dim (a `[..., ::2]`
slice) or a misaligned base breaks the descriptors exactly the same way; it is
a property of the operand, not of packing. Note this was NOT introduced by the
dense backward: the dense *forward* has always taken `q.stride(), k.stride(),
v.stride()` as-is, so the fix covers both paths. Renamed the helper to
`_normalize_operand` since nothing in its body was THD-specific.
In the backward the normalization runs before the strides are read and before
dO is matched to O, so a repaired O cannot leave dO on the stale layout.
**The dense autograd path dropped `is_deterministic`.** The THD branch passes
`torch.are_deterministic_algorithms_enabled()`; the dense branch omitted it, so
`use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` still built the graph with
`use_deterministic_algorithm=False` and gave non-reproducible dq.
Tests: `test_dense_backward_repairs_bad_operands` covers both flaw shapes
(strided innermost via `[..., ::2]`, misaligned base via a 1-element offset)
and asserts numerical correctness against a reference — a mis-declared
descriptor reads the wrong elements rather than failing loudly, so a
smoke-test would not catch it. `test_dense_autograd_honors_deterministic_flag`
runs the same inputs twice under `use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` and
requires bit-identical gradients.
Verified: 28 passed (was 25).

* torch: route the provider's dense backward through cudnn::sdpa_bwd
With dense backward wired into the op (previous commits), the provider no
longer has to hand dense gradients to the C++ worker. `_scaled_dot_product_
cudnn_attention_backward` now calls `cudnn::sdpa_bwd` directly, and the C++
worker keeps only what the op declines: attention bias, dropout > 0, and the
padded dense path (per-batch lengths).
That closes the last C++ hop in a dense training step — forward and backward
both build their graphs through the python API.
aten hands logsumexp back as `(B, H, S)` fp32, which is the dense backward's
expected layout modulo the trailing 1 the descriptor declares, so the
conversion is an `unsqueeze`.
The dense parity test previously asserted `bwd_cpp` incremented; it now
asserts the opposite — `bwd` increments and `bwd_cpp` does NOT — so a silent
regression back to the C++ path fails the suite instead of passing it. The
existing numeric parity checks (against a math reference, with the stock
flash backend as the rounding yardstick) are unchanged and still pass, which
is what says the op's gradients are as good as the worker's.
Verified: provider 17 passed, ops 28 passed. End to end on the POC bridge in
pytorch_cudnn_python_api: `bridge calls: fwd=10 bwd=10` (was fwd=10 bwd=0),
10/10 cases passing.

* docs(agents): record the concrete test traps hit while wiring the torch ops
Six things that each cost real time, written where the next person will look
rather than left in a PR thread:
- `test/python/sdpa/` mixes harness modules with tests, so the `test_` prefix
is load-bearing — a test file dropped there without it is treated as a
helper, never collected, and the suite stays green while asserting nothing.
Includes the collect-only check to confirm pickup by the DEFAULT sweep.
- Read pytest's own summary: `| grep -c passed` counts collection errors as
passes, and `cmd | tail` reports tail's exit status — a failed build behind
a pipe reads as success. Both produced wrong 'all green' reports here.
- Scale tolerances to the tensor: GQA dK/dV sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so
a fixed absolute bound that passes at h_kv == h_q fails at a group size of 4
while the relative error is unchanged (~0.5%).
- A regression test must be seen RED against the unfixed code first.
- Seed before allocating, or two runs meant to be compared differ by data.
- When removing a fallback, invert its counter assertion rather than deleting
it, so a silent regression to the old path fails instead of passing.

amax_s_gpu back, so the only effects were a stream-ordered zero-fill per
execute and the work the backend does to produce the value.
It also made every FP8 case unrunnable on --sdpa_backend cudnn_oss. The FROST
engines dropped Amax_S in #602 and decline any graph that declares one, so
pin_frost_engine_or_skip() found no eligible plan and the case exited
UNSUPPORTED_CONFIG -- for every head dim, on SM100, SM107 and SM120 alike.
Stop requesting it: leave the port virtual (the FP8 suites already do this,

* sdpa: validate Bias dim/stride like every other SDPA I/O tensor (#823)
CUDNN_FE_SDPA_VALIDATE_DIM_STRIDE checks that Q/K/V/O (and, in the
backward nodes, Stats/dO/dQ/dK/dV) have 4-D dim/stride and that the
last (embedding-per-head) dimension is contiguous, but Bias was never
included in any of the three call sites (fwd, composite bwd, fp8
bwd). A Bias tensor with a non-unit last-dim stride therefore skips
validation entirely and is read at whatever stride the caller
declared, silently, instead of failing fast with GRAPH_NOT_SUPPORTED.
Add the same existence-guarded check used elsewhere for optional
Bias handling (e.g. the bias score-modifier call sites) to all three
pre_validate_node() implementations.

- AGENTS.md: note that pip -e installs pin one checkout via sys.meta_path,

- .github/pull_request_template.md: add a checklist item to review the

* AGENTS.md: land recurring review lessons mined from PR review history
Distilled from reviewer comments (mostly Anerudhan's) across PRs #246,
#266, #280, #517, #553, #747, #797, #811, #814 — each verified against
the original review thread:
- python/cudnn Rule 1: overlapping optional declarations (ragged vs
cu_seqlen vs seq_len) are validated as a set; ambiguous combos error out.
- python/cudnn Rule 4: compile keys carry exactly the contract-relevant
set — under-keying reuses a wrong artifact, over-keying recompiles.
- python/cudnn Rule 5: device context is implicit state like the stream;
pointer args validated for device-residency + dtype.
- include/: version-gated APIs declare unconditionally, gate in the body
at runtime (conditional declarations bake the build-time version in).
- root: append-only public API signatures; never delete log statements in
cleanups; SPDX header on new files.
- test/: check module-level pytestmark before adding per-test markers.
* Address review: move THD rule to sdpa guide, automate SPDX, fix PR template
Slack + PR review feedback on #843:
- Yang: THD Stats rule was out of place among the generally-applicable
rules — moved to a new python/cudnn/sdpa/AGENTS.md as Rule S1 (SDPA
rules get their own S-numbering so citations stay unambiguous).
- Yang: automate the SPDX check — added an spdx-license-header pre-commit
hook (pygrep, fails any staged C++/CUDA/Python file missing an
SPDX-License-Identifier line) and added the header to the 8 tracked
source files that were missing it, so the hook is clean repo-wide.
Verified: hook fails a header-less probe file, passes --all-files.
- Anerudhan + Vedaanta: Milestone/Projects are set by reviewers/
maintainers, not authors — dropped the checklist item; label groups are
cat-* / area:*+op:* / orig-* (not mod-*) in the template and AGENTS.md.
* Address CodeRabbit review: strict SPDX pattern, correct head-major stride bound
- .pre-commit-config.yaml: the SPDX hook now requires a *commented*
SPDX-License-Identifier line with a non-empty identifier
('^\s*(?:#|//|\*|/\*)\s*SPDX-License-Identifier:\s*\S+'), so a string
literal mentioning the marker no longer satisfies it. Verified: fails
a 'marker = "SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT"' probe and a header-less
probe, passes --all-files.
- python/cudnn/sdpa/AGENTS.md Rule S1: the head-major non-overlap bound
is the packed token count T (stride_h >= H was wrong — per-head slices
alias when T > stride_h). Documented why plan time can only classify
(stride_s == 1, stride_h >= 1): T is a runtime total, so the capacity
check is execute-time.
* Rule S1: head-major stride_h >= T is caller contract in THD, not adapter-checked
CodeRabbit correctly noted as_strided bounds-checks storage capacity,
never overlap, so an in-bounds stride_h < T head-major view would alias.
But the packed total is a device value in the THD path — Rule 3 bans the
host read that a host-side stride_h >= T check would need, which is why
_thd_lse_view's docstring declares covering the packed total as caller
contract. State that precisely instead of implying an execute-time check
exists, and warn against "fixing" it with a host-side length read.
* sdpa(#624): clamp the f16 THD K/V descriptor extents to the packed total, and NaN-poison ragged capacity tails in test_mhas_v2 (#646)
* test(mhas_v2): NaN-poison ragged capacity tails so capacity-vs-live-token bugs fail deterministically (GitHub #624)
The f16/bf16 harness filled the entire packed K/V/Q/dO capacity - pad
tokens included - with finite random data, so an engine that reads past
the last ragged offset (e.g. THD zero-host-read binding K/V views to
buffer capacity instead of live token counts) stayed green: the padding
mask turns finite garbage into exact zeros, while real recycled device
memory holds NaN bit patterns and 0 x NaN = NaN poisons whole output
rows. The fp8 harness already NaN-fills its pads via
convert_uniform_to_packed, which is why the only test able to catch
GitHub #624 in the wild was fp8 ragged - and only with a lucky seed.
- packed_token_capacity: capacity is now always strictly greater than
the packed total (next multiple of 64), so every ragged buffer has a
poisonable tail; previously an exact-multiple total had no tail and
the bug class structurally could not fire.
- fp16 harness: NaN-fill the capacity tail of Q/K/V/dO after the random
fill, matching the fp8 harness contract.
- fp16/fp8 harnesses: use the shared packed_token_capacity instead of
three duplicated inline formulas.
Validation on SM100 (B200):
- native routing: failure set bit-identical to unmodified develop on
MHAS_NUM_TESTS=16/32 ragged sweeps (no collateral).
- FROST routing (CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1, checkout with
the #606 zero-host-read path): old harness 24/24 ragged f16 fwd pass;
new harness fails 19/24 with the exact #624 signature (o_gpu 24% NaN
in valid rows).
mxfp8 note: the mxfp8 harness has no ragged/THD path (its random
configs never draw "ragged"), so this class is not yet exercisable
there; fp8 covers the 1-byte-dtype THD engines.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* test(mhas_v2): stop drawing silently-ignored padded configs for mxfp8
The sdpa_mxfp8 python API has no seq_len/padding arguments and
exec_sdpa_mxfp8 never reads cfg.seq_len_q/kv, so a "padded" draw ran
dense-full while the repro config claimed padding — inflated coverage.
Draw full-only with a pointer to re-add padded/ragged once the API
grows seq-len support (the shared packed_token_capacity /
convert_uniform_to_packed helpers then provide the NaN-poisoned
capacity tails from the previous commit automatically).
Also documents the analogous fp8 gap in-place: a dense "padded" draw
runs as full because exec_sdpa_fp8 binds seq_len tensors only on the
paged and ragged paths.

* frost(sdpa): clamp the f16 THD K/V descriptors to the packed total (issue #624)
A THD caller binds K/V at BUFFER CAPACITY, not at the packed total, and the
descriptor extent is the host-derived capacity. Rows in [total, capacity) are
therefore inside the extent and get loaded. They are masked, so P == 0 -- but
0 * NaN == NaN, so an uninitialized capacity tail wipes whole tiles of O.
The FP8/MXFP8 flavors have always handled this: build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel
copies the K/V base TensorMaps into o_desc_words and patches GLOBAL_DIM ord=2 to
cu_k[B] device-side, so tail rows become TMA-OOB and land as exact zeros -- no
memory touched, nothing written into the caller's buffer. The f16/bf16 flavors
used the O-only setup variant and had no clamp.
Port it: build_thd_meta_o_descs_kernel takes base_k_desc/base_v_desc and writes
the two clamped descriptors after the dead-unit pad slot; all four f16 SM100
kernels (d128, d192_d128, d256, d512) thread o_desc_words into
_tmaldg_warp_group and bind tma_k/tma_v to runtime-descriptor closures under
CFG.THD_VARLEN; _odesc_len and api_dsl's o_desc_slots grow by two slots (which
is now unconditional for THD, not FP8-only).
The clamp block is duplicated rather than factored into a helper on purpose: a
plain Python function called from a @cute.kernel body is not AST-transformed,
and hoisting it turns these tests red.
Adds test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail: three sequences totalling 397 (not a
multiple of TILE_N, so the last tile steps past it) bound into capacity-sized
Q/K/V buffers whose tails are NaN. Asserts O is finite and matches the
per-sequence reference.
Validation, B200 SM100, cuDNN 9.26.0.33, CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1,
same setup for both columns:
test_mhas_v2 -k fwd_ragged_L0 without clamp: 19 failed / 27 passed
with clamp: 0 failed / 46 passed
test_mhas_v2 -k fwd (dense +
ragged + fp8 + mxfp8) 212 passed, 28 skipped, 0 failed
SM120 (prefill_f16_sm120.py) still lacks the clamp -- it uses the meta-only
build_thd_meta_kernel, so the K/V slots must be introduced rather than switched.
* docs(agents): record the CuTeDSL kernel-body and editable-install traps
Two traps that each cost real debugging time on issue #624, written down with
the runnable check rather than as prose advice.
python/cudnn/AGENTS.md -- do not factor code out of a @cute.kernel body into a
plain Python helper. The DSL AST-transforms only the decorated function's own
source (for -> ir_loop, if -> scf region); a helper is not transformed, so the
ops it emits can land outside the enclosing region. Hoisting an 11-line block
that ran correctly inline turned 212 passing forward tests into 31 failures.
These break at compile(), not at import, so --collect-only stays green.
test/AGENTS.md -- confirm you are testing the code you edited. `pip install -e .`
installs a sys.meta_path finder whose MAPPING hard-codes one checkout; meta-path
finders beat sys.path, so PYTHONPATH cannot shadow it and edits in a second
clone or a git worktree are silently not under test. The symptom is
indistinguishable from a real result: a deliberately destructive probe leaves
the output bit-identical. Includes the `python -c "import cudnn; print(...)"`
check and a sitecustomize.py recipe for redirecting the finder for one run.
* test(sdpa): the undeclared THD path is NaN-safe now too (issue #624)
test_dsl_sm100_thd_declared_total_bounds_capacity_tail ended with a control
asserting that WITHOUT max_total_seq_len the capacity tail is still reachable,
so that the clamp assertions above it were testing the clamp rather than a
benign shape. The device-side K/V extent clamp makes that false by design --
the tail is now out of reach on every THD flavor, declared or not -- which is
the case the assertion's own message called out as "needs rethinking".
Invert it: assert the undeclared path is clean, that O is independent of the
tail fill either way, and that declaring the total does not change the result
bit for bit. Declaring is now a host-side tightening (capacity, grid and
workspace sizing) rather than the only thing standing between the kernel and
the tail.
Seen red: with the clamp reverted and these tests kept, 7 failed
(test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail at 201728/403456/806912 NaNs in O across
d128/d256/d512, plus this test); with the clamp, 7 passed.
* test(sdpa): cover the d192/d128 flavor in the capacity-tail test; drop the hard-coded finder version
Two CodeRabbit findings on #646, both valid.
test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail parametrized a single `d` over _FLAVORS,
so it could only select d128/d256/d512 -- it never reached the d192/d128
flavor, which is one of the four kernels this PR changes. Parametrize
(d_qk, d_v) over [(128,128), (192,128), (256,256), (512,512)] instead, with Q/K
at d_qk and V/O at d_v (separate ragged offsets per width). Confirmed the new
case is a real regression guard: with the clamp reverted, dsv3 fails at 201728
NaNs in O for both dtypes; with it, all 8 combos pass.
test/AGENTS.md hard-coded __editable___nvidia_cudnn_frontend_1_28_0_finder in
the sitecustomize recipe, which raises ModuleNotFoundError once __version__
bumps -- and it would fail before reaching the MAPPING patch, i.e. exactly when
the reader is already confused about which checkout is loaded. Discover the
module via pkgutil.iter_modules() instead. The recipe as written is the one
used to validate this PR.
* test(sdpa): drop the unused packed-storage bindings in the capacity-tail test
RUF059: q_stor/k_stor/v_stor were never read after unpacking. The as_strided
view keeps its storage alive on its own, so _poisoned_buf now returns just the
view rather than the pair. o_stor stays bound -- the assertions read the packed
prefix out of it.

* frost(sdpa): per-tensor FP8 d512 forward kernel on SM100 (#845)
* frost(sdpa): per-tensor FP8 d512 forward kernel on SM100
Adds prefill_d512_fp8_sm100.py, the FP8 (E4M3/E5M2) sibling of the d512
f16 kernel, and routes the SM100 per-tensor FP8 engine to it. Same cga4x1
role-split pipeline, Q u K_ring SMEM alias, UTCCP(Q -> TMEM) + mma_ts BMM1
and THD leg; every delta is dtype-driven and derived from CFG:
- STAGES_KV = XFER_STAGES = 3. BPE=1 halves the K/V ring, and FP8 packs
4 elements per 4-byte TMEM column, so the UTCCP'd Q costs 128 cols
instead of 256 and a third S_acc parity fits: 3*128 + 128 = 512, exactly
at the Blackwell TMEM cap.
- MMA_KIND = F8F6F4, TILE_K_HW = 32, idesc k_dim = 0 -- the Blackwell K=32
QMMA step. Both k_dim values are derived from CFG.TILE_K_HW_* so they
cannot drift into the Rubin k_dim=1 combination, which is silently wrong
here (per-row scrambled accumulator, no crash).
- P_XFER_HALVES = (TILE_N*BPE)//Q_SWZ_BYTES collapses to 1: a 128-column
FP8 P row is a single swizzle atom, so the sg0->sg1 KV-split degenerates
to one whole-P chunk. The BMM2 K-half unroll becomes a loop over it.
- The Q u O SMEM alias is sized in BYTES, and sO is viewed as
OUT_STORAGE_DTYPE. An element-sized alias under-allocates when
BPE_O = 2 (FP8 in, BF16/FP16 out) and the wider O store overflows into
the P-transfer ring.
- Per-tensor descales are read from DEVICE (no host readback):
descale_q*descale_k folds into scale_softmax_log2 and descale_v*scale_o
into o_scale_fused, which the epilogue folds into beta. Amax_O is an
atomicMax over the fp32 pre-cast output, reduced with a TERNARY tree
(_abs_max_tree): the obvious running max builds a TILE_O-deep dependency
chain on the epilogue's critical path and cost ~7% of kernel time at
S=8192. A fully-masked row needs no per-element sanitizing -- its O TMEM
is written by the MMA with a zero P -- so one select on the row's scalar
result covers the dead-row case.
- THD rides the FP8 setup variant (build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel), so
K/V load through packed-total-clamped runtime descriptors: the last
sequence's tile steps past the packed total into the caller's capacity
tail, and a NaN there would wipe the tile through BMM2's P.V, since
masking zeroes P and not V.
Head-dim coverage. The flavor serves (256, 512] on BOTH head dims -- the
band no smaller FP8 flavor reaches -- through the usual TMA zero-padding
envelope, so d_qk != d_v is served too. The floor is new row data
(Capabilities.d_envelope_floors, mirrored by api_dsl): without it the d512
shape would act as a plain upper bound and swallow e.g. a d256 graph at 2x
zero-padding. api_dsl._pick_flavor also takes the candidate set now, so an
FP8 graph can no longer land on the d256 flavor, which has no FP8 kernel.
The graph-level support surface rejected d_qk > 128 for sdpa_fp8 before any
engine was consulted; it now admits the same (256, 512] band.
Not in scope: split-KV (needs a half-precision O and its own combine-side
amax) and MXFP8 (no d512 block-scale kernel).
Tested on Blackwell (cc10.0): 34 new cases in test_sdpa_fwd_fp8_sm100.py --
masks, all 8 in x out dtype pairs, sink, GQA/MQA, per-batch KV padding, LSE,
multi-wave, the (256, 512] envelope band, and THD (self/cross attention,
GQA, sink + ragged stats, zero-length KV, cu_seq_len form) -- plus accept
and reject coverage for the new floor in test_sdpa_fp8_sm107.py. The rest
of sdpa/frost is unchanged; the three *_strided_stats failures on this node
pre-date the branch (they need a cuDNN backend >= 9.26 and the node has
9.25.1).
Perf: kernel-only GPU time (nsys, B=1 H=8 S=8192 d=512 dense E4M3) is
530.8 us against 521.4 us for the pre-upstream VibeTile dsv4 kernel this was
ported from -- 1.8%, which is the in-kernel Amax_O that kernel does not
compute.
* test(sdpa): assert the d512 THD zero-length-KV LSE against its reference
CodeRabbit flagged `lse_ref` as unbound-but-unused in
test_fp8_d512_thd_zero_len_kv. It was, and renaming it to `_` would have
hidden the real problem: the test only asserted that the DEAD rows come back
-inf and never checked the live sequences' LSE at all, so a wrong-but-finite
LSE on them would have passed.
Assert the whole ragged Stats buffer against the reference, the way the d128
sibling (test_fp8_thd_zero_len_kv) already does, and keep the explicit
dead-row check next to it since that is the point of the case. Also pick up
the sibling's second shape -- a zero-length Q sequence, which contributes no
tile at all -- which the d512 copy had dropped.
50 passed (-k "d512 or thd") on Blackwell cc10.0.
* Benchmark cudnn_oss for kimi_k3/deepseek_v4 and flash_attention (FA2) on Ampere (#852)
* Enable cudnn_oss backend for kimi_k3 and deepseek_v4 training benchmarks
kimi_k3 has the same attention geometry as dsv3 (head_dim_qk=192,
head_dim_vo=128), whose config already benchmarks cudnn_oss - the backend
was simply never added when kimi_k3 was introduced. deepseek_v4
(head_dim=512) is the model class the SM100 d512 forward flavor was built
for, but without cudnn_oss in its config that kernel is never exercised by
the benchmark. Architectures without a matching kernel record the
unsupported combos in the CSV per the existing convention.
* Benchmark flash_attention (FA2) on Ampere in the llama training config
FA4 backward asserts SM90+ (its forward supports SM80), so the Ampere
dashboard has no flash-attention backward reference column. FA2 supports
the SM80 backward and ships in the base container, so include it as a
backend when the visible device is Ampere; on SM90+ FA4 remains the
reference and FA2 is not run.
* Extend the Ampere-only FA2 backend to all training configs
Moves the Ampere gate into a shared config_types.fa2_on_ampere() helper and
applies it uniformly: every training config benchmarks flash_attention when
the visible device is SM 8.x, giving the Ampere dashboards a flash-attention
backward reference wherever FA2 can serve the shape. Models whose head dims
FA2 cannot serve (mismatched Q/KV dims or head_dim > 256) record the
unsupported combos as failed rows per the existing convention. SM90+ runs
are unchanged.
* Apply black formatting to fa2_on_ampere helper
* frost gemm heur: score real M, densify the tile scan, never pad the cluster grid (#844)
* frost gemm heur: score real M, densify the tile scan, never pad the cluster grid
Follow-up to #781, revised against what the first exhaustive sweep of that
logic showed:
* _tile_score was fed _floor_pow2(M), a bucketing convenience inherited from
the flashinfer heuristic's cache design. frost does not bucket, so snapping
M=7009 to 4096 just misstated the launched M-tiles and last-tile padding,
over-ranking short tiles for every non-power-of-2 M. Score the real M.
* The tile scan gains the hardware-legal intermediate N widths (96/160/192/
224) and the 64-tall family extends to M <= 512 (measured wins well past
one tile row), 128 scanned first so ties keep the taller tile. Plain
single-GEMM row-major-B path only, as before.
* Block-scale problems take the 2-CTA MMA pair even without a second M tile
(halved per-CTA B footprint buys pipeline depth) while the padded pair row
still fits one wave; past that the padding costs a whole wave.
* Under a single wave _cluster_score's quantisation and occupancy terms
cancel, so a padded cluster launch tied with an exact fit and pool order
decided. Break ties by fewest launched CTAs (never pad), then by the
sweep's measured preference, A-multicast (cta_group, 4), which wins the
remaining tie group in every measured cohort.
Measured against exhaustive per-layer sweeps of the 248-layer golden set
(GEMMs extracted via FlashInfer API logs of priority models; fp8 per-tensor
and nvfp4 block-scale), silicon-retimed heuristic efficiency (chosen /
best-swept): fp8 0.874->0.937 (sm100), 0.884->0.936 (sm103); fp4
0.911->0.956 (sm100), 0.917->0.955 (sm103). Validated the same way on every
other architecture frost supports.

* test: the auto path now owns the catalog widths, pin the new invariants
test_the_auto_path_never_picks_a_non_power_of_two_tile pinned the old
scan's {32,64,128,256} ladder; the densified scan makes 96/160/192/224
the engine's own picks on the plain path, so the invariant moves: every
auto width is a hardware-legal multiple of 32 within [32,256], every
pick resolves in the catalog, and the CONSTRAINED paths (block-scale,
multi-GEMM) still produce only powers of two.

* frost(sdpa): put the d256 SM100 THD grid on the persistent scheduler
The d256 THD launch sized its grid to the plan-time S_q envelope, so a
caller declaring S_q far above its live token count paid for the dead
clusters that covered the gap. The f16 setup kernel already publishes the
live unit total and a claim counter, so switch the scheduler warp to the
persistent claim loop and let the adapter cap the grid to what the device
holds resident.
Add a d256 case covering a cluster that claims more than one unit: the
existing THD cases all fit inside a single wave, so none of them re-enter
the K/V pipeline for a second unit.
* frost(sdpa): put the remaining SM100 THD grids on the persistent scheduler
Extends the d256 conversion to the d192/d128, d512 and FP8-family flavors,
so every SM100 THD launch is sized to the machine rather than to the
plan-time S_q envelope.
The FP8-family setup kernel built the metadata and the batch remap but
never wrote the live unit total or the claim counter, so a persistent
scheduler there read uninitialized workspace. Write both, as the f16
setup kernel already did.
Cap the grid on CGA_SIZE (CTAs per cluster) rather than CTA_MMA. The two
agree on the cga2 flavors, but d512 pairs CGA_M=4 with CTA_MMA=2, and
neither d512 nor d192/d128 exports CTA_MMA at all — so the old lookup fell
back to 1 and would have over-launched the grid several times over.
Add multi-unit-per-CTA cases across the flavors: the existing THD tests
all fit inside a single wave, so none of them re-enters the K/V pipeline
for a second unit.
* frost(sdpa): enable the LPT/LPT_L2 scheduler on the SM107 fp8 row (#850)
Every scheduler decode call site in the SM107 per-tensor FP8 prefill
sibling threads qh_per_kh/seqlen_kv, which is what the shared
_common_sm100 LPT_L2 decode requires, so the row no longer has to pin
its sched domain to SCHED_NATURAL. The L2 figure the remap groups
against (CFG.L2_SIZE_MIB) is a tuning hint for the grouping rather than
a chip capacity, so the SM100 number carries to Rubin unchanged.

* frost(sdpa): SM80 backward native strided-LSE reads + THD max_s_kv grid hint (#766)
The #712 analogue for the backward's LOADS: the main-bprop and dSink kernels
read the Stats/LSE input stride-aware, compiled against the DECLARED
(B, H, SQ) strides (module compile() gains a plan-time lse_stride key; a
contiguous plan keeps the packed compact fake — byte-identical codegen).
The adapter drops the strided-stats gather staging entirely: sizing loses
the staging term, execute binds the caller's storage through a checked
declared-layout view (the reader twin of the forward's _checked_lse_view),
and the SM120 bwd adapter's existing _lse_strides convention now has its
SM80 counterpart. The d64 fast path keeps legacy packed reads, so a strided
Stats declaration routes to the generic module (plan-time gate). THD keeps
packed math — the grid batch index is the logical sequence, not the
tensor's batch-1 dim.
THD wrapper: a max_s_kv grid hint (any upper bound — short kv-tiles
early-out) removes the wrapper's only D2H sync; n_seq was already shape
metadata. Hint-less calls keep the documented host read of cu_k. The
dense path rejects the hint loudly.
Tests: strided-stats bitwise-vs-contiguous with equal workspace bytes
(no staging), and max_s_kv exact/over-provisioned bitwise checks plus the
dense-path rejection.

* Add tanh_clamp_scale to grouped GEMM srelu/dsrelu kernels Optional tanh soft-clamp for the squared-ReLU epilogues of the SM100 block-scaled grouped GEMM kernels, forward and backward: (#858)
forward: out = (s * tanh(relu(x) / s))^2 * prob (plain srelu is the s -> inf limit)
backward: dgrad = g * 2c(1 - t^2) * prob; dprob = sum(c^2 * g); d_srelu regen = c^2 * prob
The scale is a trace-time constant folded into the compiled kernel and included in the compile-cache key. tanh_clamp_scale=None (default) is bit-identical to the unclamped path, covered by explicit None-vs-omitted torch.equal tests. t is capped at 1 defensively (measured: tanh.approx never exceeds 1).
Tested on GB300 (sm_103): full srelu + dsrelu suites green, including clamped cases (two scales x fp8/fp4 x vector_f32 x reuse x deterministic), cache-key tests, forward/backward regen consistency, and an fp64 autograd check that the closed-form backward is the forward's derivative.
* test(torch_provider): guard the d256 aten-op test's backward too (fixes py_test sm80 red since #554) (#863)
* test(torch_provider): guard the d256 aten-op test's backward too (skip when no engine serves it)
test_d256_direct_aten_op (PR #554) wrapped only the FORWARD aten call in its
skip guard, and caught RuntimeError. On Ampere the forward builds fine but
the BACKWARD graph is rejected at validate() by the native support surface
(scaled_dot_product_flash_attention.h: hidden_dim <= 128 on this arch), which
runs before any FROST routing — so no OSS engine can serve the d=256 backward
from the graph API either, with or without CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES.
That rejection surfaces as cudnnGraphNotSupportedError, which derives from
Exception (not RuntimeError), so the guard would have missed it regardless.
Result: py_test:{rel,dev}:sm80 red on every PR, e.g.
https://gitlab-master.nvidia.com/cudnn/cudnn_frontend/-/jobs/421380222
Wrap forward + backward in one guard and catch both exception types; the
skip reason names the arch gate. The underlying blind spot (native support
surface gating graphs a FROST engine could serve — the SM80 row advertises
d <= 256 backward) is architectural and tracked separately.

* review: gate the d256 aten-op test up front; skip only on engine-selection rejections
CodeRabbit on #863: (1) gate unsupported configurations before allocating
tensors — sm80+ and cuDNN >= 9.6 checks now lead the test, mirroring
test_torch_ops.py's module gate (the suggested 9.12 floor has no source in
the repo; 9.6 is the floor the sibling python-SDPA tests use); (2) do not
turn every RuntimeError into a skip — cudnnGraphNotSupportedError stays the
skip path, a RuntimeError skips only when its message is the engine
rejection itself (unsupported / no engine), and anything else (allocation
failures, autograd regressions) re-raises as a failure.
Verified on A100 / backend 9.27 (develop 22ed1b1fe): still skips in both
env modes with the arch-gate reason; test_torch_provider.py 16 passed,
1 skipped in the CI-like env.

* frost(sdpa): bound the SM80 backward q-loop by the sliding window (6-12x on gpt_oss-style SWA) + window-aware deterministic relay (#866)
* frost(sdpa): bound the SM80 bprop q-loop by the sliding window + window-aware deterministic relay
The SM80 backward bounded each kv-tile's q-loop only from below (the causal
skip) and applied the sliding window purely as a per-element mask, so every
kv-tile swept all q-tiles to the end of the sequence: O(S^2) work for an
O(S*W) problem. The A100 attention_training dashboard showed it on the
gpt_oss config (W=128, d=64): cudnn_oss backward 5x slower than the cuDNN
backend at S=2k, 19x at 8k, 75x at 32k, while the forward already trims its
kv range by the window (kv_left).
Add the upper bound: a kv-tile [kv_base, kv_base+tile_kv) is attended by no q
with anchor(q) > kv_base + tile_kv - 1 + W (anchor = q, or q + causal_diag
under bottom-right), so n_iters is capped at ceil((kv_base + tile_kv + W -
diag) / tile_q) - q_lo_tile; fully-masked tiles run 0 iters and store dK =
dV = 0. THD uses in-sequence indices, so the bound is per packed sequence.
Deterministic path: the dQ relay spun until counter == kv_tile, which assumes
every lower kv-tile visited the q-tile. A high-end cut breaks that (q_hi grows
with kv_tile), so the relay now counts turns from the q-tile's first visitor,
kv_first = max((q_row0 + diag - W) // tile_kv, 0) — the inverse of the clamp —
for both the acquire target and the release value (SM120 precedent:
bprop_f16_sm120.py relay_turn). Without a window it folds to kv_tile.
A100, b=2 h=16 d=64 W=128 bf16 causal, backward median (cuDNN backend ref):
non-det S=4k: 3.111 -> 0.507 ms (ref 0.425) S=8k: 12.041 -> 0.980 ms (ref 0.802)
det S=4k: 3.463 ms (ref 2.609) S=8k: 10.876 ms (ref 9.457)
Tests: test_sm80_bwd_swa_long_seq (top-left causal+window, window-only,
bottom-right causal+window with s_q != s_kv) at S >> W against the dense
reference (which gains bottom-right + window support), test_sm80_bwd_thd_swa
(per-sequence bound), test_sm80_bwd_swa_deterministic …
The #552 endgame on SM100: THD execute now performs zero device-to-host reads — no
.tolist()syncs, no host cumsum, no pageable H2D — and is CUDA-graph capturable. Four commits, in dependency order.1. Over-launched THD grid units are dead by contract
A grid unit past the live total used to fall through
_thd_decodewithbatch 0, aliasing live tile (0,0,0). It now keeps thebatch == n_batchsentinel, which neutralizes every consumer through in-bounds metadata reads:_resolve_seqlen_kvreadscu_q[0] == 0→ empty KV range in every role and mask mode; the epilogue's per-sequence Q length goes negative → the LSE predicate never fires; the O-store role skips the TMA store (descriptor slotn_batch— the existing pad slot — is never built). Pinned by a test that pads the grid (+7 units) across zero-length leading/middle sequences and all-KV-zero.2. Device-built metadata — KV lengths never reach the host
The per-execute setup kernel (the single-thread O-descriptor builder) grows a first phase that builds
[kv_lens | cu_q | cu_k]on device from the caller's length tensors —(B,)per-batch lengths (serial cumsum) or the(B+1,)cu prefix-sum form — then builds the O descriptors from the cu values it just wrote. The form rides a runtime bitmask and the fake lens tensors compile with dynamic extents: both forms bind one artifact, no compile key grows (Rule 4). K/V views bind their buffers' capacity (shared floor — one dynamic token symbol); the zero-KV clamp re-keys from packed total to capacity. Knowingly given up: the KV-side cu invariant check — a validation that needs a device read is not a validation (Rule 3).3. Plan-time envelope grid — zero host reads, capture-legal
The launch grid becomes
B * ceil(S_q_declared / CGA_TILE_M) * QH(every length is bounded by the declared S_q), dead units exiting via commit 1's contract. Q/O/Stats bind buffer capacity; the degenerate early-return keys on zero capacity. Pinned by two tests: execute undertorch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error"), and a capture/replay test that rewrites the lengths in-place between replays — the replay honors them, proving nothing host-side is baked into the graph.Dead-tile tax, measured (B200 d128, B=8 QH=8 S_decl=16k): zero at full/near-full declarations, +0.2% at half-length, ~145 ns per exposed dead unit when live work is tiny (64 of 2048 units: 33 µs → 319 µs). Realistic THD prefill declarations pay <0.2%; far-oversized declarations pay the same class of tax as the C++ backend's
s_maxgrid. Follow-up recorded in AGENTS.md: a capped persistent grid reading a device-side live-unit count would bound the tax by resident clusters.4. Port to d192_d128 / d256 / d512
Mechanical replication of the d128 template (decode sentinel and setup kernel were already shared): O-store dead-unit skip, setup-kernel import swap,
_hostparams + launch swap, compile fakes. All four SM100 f16 THD families now run the zero-sync path. New direct-API d192/d128 THD numerics test (the graph THD harness assumesd_qk == d_v, so that flavor's THD leg had no coverage).5. Drop the migration seam
The
THD_DEVICE_METAflag existed so each commit could land atomically (d128 first, the other families still correct — and tested — on the old path). With all four f16 families ported it was dead code:_execute_thdis f16-only (the FP8/MXFP8 executes return before the THD dispatch; SM120 has its own), so the flag, the legacy host-meta branches, and the exact host-computed unit count are removed — one execute path, net −65 lines.Out of scope / follow-ups
max_sqruntime arg, no clusters, no per-batch O-descriptor array) — needs its own dead-unit contract and setup kernel, validated on SM120 CI. Stays on the legacy host-meta path; tracked on frost(sdpa): THD execute host round-trip — D2H sync, per-total recompile, and CUDA-graph capture #552.Tests
Full SM100 DSL suite (L0+L1) green on a B200/SM100 box across all commits: 480 tests at head (dense + THD, all four flavors, legacy + device-meta paths), including 6 new tests: over-launch, lens-never-reach-host, zero-KV two-shapes, sync-debug, CUDA-graph capture/replay, d192 THD.
