🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
_varlen_bwd can route to cuDNN after the forward pass ran on FlashAttention.
_varlen_supported accepts seqused_k, block_table, and num_splits. Line 231 calls it with ws only, so those three default to None and the predicate returns True. The comment claims the same predicate ran in the forward pass. That is not correct: _varlen_fwd at Line 193 passes all four arguments and falls back to flash when block_table or seqused_k is set.
For a paged-KV or split forward pass, the backward pass then runs the cuDNN THD kernel over key/value that hold paged blocks. The gradients are wrong, or the operator fails.
The backward op schema does not carry block_table. Detect the mismatch instead. One option: record the routing decision in rng_state, which the forward pass already returns and the backward pass already receives. Another option: raise an explicit error for the unsupported case.

PyTorch 2.13 register_flash_attention_impl register_fn handle remove torch.library.Library _destroy
💡 Result:
In PyTorch, the register_flash_attention_impl function and its associated mechanisms are part of the Scaled Dot Product Attention (SDPA) registry system [1][2]. They are designed for SDPA backend providers to register and manage custom kernels with the PyTorch dispatcher [2][3]. Key components of this system include: 1. register_flash_attention_impl: This function registers a callable (register_fn) that performs the actual dispatcher registration for a specific flash attention implementation (e.g., "FA4") [2][3]. 2. register_fn: When invoked (via activate_flash_attention_impl), this callable performs the registration with the PyTorch dispatcher [3]. It may optionally return a FlashAttentionHandle object [2][3]. 3. handle and remove: The FlashAttentionHandle is used to maintain the state of the registered implementation [2][3]. If a handle is returned, the registry stores it [3]. When restore_flash_attention_impl is called to revert to the default implementation, the system calls the remove() method on the active handle to clean up or unregister the custom kernel [4]. Regarding torch.library.Library and _destroy: While torch.library.Library is a core PyTorch mechanism for registering custom operators and kernels with the dispatcher, it manages registrations and their lifetimes automatically via handle objects [5]. The internal _destroy method (or similar lifecycle cleanup methods) is typically managed by the internal C++ dispatch layer to ensure that when a library object goes out of scope or is explicitly removed, the associated registrations are destroyed or disabled to prevent dangling pointers or invalid states [4][6]. Users generally do not interact with _destroy directly; rather, they use the high-level Python API (like handle.remove()) or manage the scope of the torch.library.Library object [5][4].

🌐 Web query:
site:github.com/pytorch/pytorch torch/nn/attention/_registry.py register_flash_attention_impl 2.13 _destroy Library
💡 Result:
In PyTorch, the function register_flash_attention_impl, located in torch/nn/attention/_registry.py, is used by Scaled Dot Product Attention (SDPA) backend providers to register their flash attention implementations with the PyTorch dispatcher [1][2]. Regarding the "_destroy" reference in your query, the current implementation of the flash attention registry in PyTorch does not include a function named _destroy [1][2]. Instead, the documentation explicitly notes that registered implementations are kept alive for the lifetime of the process, stating: "the registry keeps that handle alive for the lifetime of the process (until explicit uninstall support exists)" [1][3][4]. This implies that there is currently no public or internal "_destroy" mechanism for these library handles, consistent with the documented lack of explicit uninstall support [1][3]. If you are encountering a reference to a _destroy method, it may be part of an internal, undocumented, or experimental API, or it could be a misunderstanding of the current design where library lifecycles are managed for the duration of the process [1].

🌐 Web query:
site:docs.pytorch.org/docs/2.13 torch.library.Library _destroy register_flash_attention_impl
💡 Result:
The terms mentioned, torch.library.Library and register_flash_attention_impl, are associated with PyTorch's extension and kernel registration mechanisms, though they do not constitute a single standard public API workflow [1][2]. torch.library.Library is a PyTorch class used in the C++ and Python APIs for defining and registering custom operators into the PyTorch dispatcher [3]. It is typically used by extension authors to integrate custom operations (like specialized kernels) so they can be dispatched through standard PyTorch functions. The _destroy method is generally used internally by the PyTorch library system to clean up or unregister these library objects when they are no longer needed, ensuring that the dispatcher state remains consistent. register_flash_attention_impl is an internal or experimental function related to the registration of Flash Attention kernels [1]. In recent PyTorch versions (such as those involving FlexAttention), Flash Attention implementations can be registered as part of the attention backend system [1]. This allows the user to select specific kernel implementations (e.g., "FLASH", "TRITON") for attention operations. In summary: 1. torch.library.Library: A core utility for registering custom operators and kernels with the PyTorch dispatcher. The _destroy method is an internal cleanup mechanism for these libraries. 2. register_flash_attention_impl: An internal function used to register or provide implementations for Flash Attention within PyTorch's attention handling framework [1]. These components are typically utilized by developers building high-performance kernels or extending PyTorch's operator dispatch system, rather than by end-users writing standard neural network models [1][3].

"until explicit uninstall support exists" "register_flash_attention_impl"
💡 Result:
The phrase "until explicit uninstall support exists" appears in the documentation for the PyTorch function torch.nn.attention.activate_flash_attention_impl [1][2]. In the context of registering and activating custom Scaled Dot Product Attention (SDPA) backends in PyTorch, when a backend's register_flash_attention_impl callable returns a FlashAttentionHandle, the PyTorch registry keeps that handle alive for the lifetime of the process [1][3]. The note "(until explicit uninstall support exists)" is included in the documentation to clarify that, currently, there is no mechanism to explicitly uninstall or remove these registered handles once they have been activated for the duration of the process [1][4]. This design ensures that necessary state for the flash attention implementation remains available for the process's lifetime, but it also reflects a limitation in the current registration API where backend providers cannot dynamically remove their implementations [1][5].

Guard the use of torch.library.Library._destroy(). PyTorch 2.13 defines this private method, while the registry only requires the handle to implement remove(). A future release can change or remove _destroy(), causing restore_flash_attention_impl() to fail. Add version-gated compatibility coverage or use a supported lifecycle API when available.

served_plan_names reports only the experimental forward cache.
The function iterates _cudnn_ops._fprop_cache, which belongs to cudnn.experimental.ops.sdpa. After registry activation, the varlen forward path runs torch.ops.cudnn.sdpa_fwd from cudnn.sdpa.fwd.torch_op and populates _graph_cache in that module. Those plans never appear in the returned list. A caller that debugs a varlen run gets an empty or misleading result.
Iterate both caches, and label each entry with its source.

_int32_col does not move the index tensors to the device.
_int32_col calls .to(torch.int32) only. It preserves the device. If a caller passes cu_seqlens_q, cu_seqlens_kv, seq_len_q, or seq_len_kv on the CPU, cuDNN receives a host pointer as a device pointer. The failure is an illegal memory access, not a clear error. The operator is public through torch.ops.cudnn.sdpa_fwd, so the path is reachable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject cu_seqlens_kv supplied without cu_seqlens_q.
Line 337 derives is_thd from cu_seqlens_q only. If a caller passes cu_seqlens_kv (and max_seqlen_*) but omits cu_seqlens_q, control falls to the dense branch. That branch never reads cu_seqlens_kv, so the varlen intent is dropped without an error and the op attends over padding tokens. The op is public through torch.ops.cudnn.sdpa_fwd, so the path is reachable.
Add a symmetric guard next to the existing varlen checks.

Graduates the PyTorch-integration bridge into the wheel. Importing
cudnn.torch registers the "CUDNN" provider with torch.nn.attention's
flash-attention implementation registry (PyTorch 2.13+, the same mechanism
FA3/FA4 use); activation stays explicit:
import cudnn.torch
torch.nn.attention.activate_flash_attention_impl("CUDNN")
After activation, F.scaled_dot_product_attention's cuDNN backend and
torch.nn.attention.varlen.varlen_attn run on the cuDNN Python API via the
cudnn::sdpa_fwd / sdpa_bwd custom ops, with hybrid fallback to the existing
implementations for what the python path does not serve yet: dense
bias/dropout forwards, every dense backward (until dense lands in
cudnn::sdpa_bwd), and paged/asymmetric-window varlen (stock flash kernels).
Dense forwards adopt the query's layout permutation. Unlike the in-tree
cuDNN varlen branch, the provider serves GQA and causal sliding windows.
restore_flash_attention_impl() reverts; torch < 2.13 uses install().
No dependency on the experimental ops module. The [cutedsl] import boundary
is preserved (import cudnn stays torch-free; cudnn.torch is explicit
opt-in). Stacked on the cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd ops PR.

`_varlen_bwd` repadded the packed LSE with
for i in range(B):
a, b = int(cu_seq_q[i]), int(cu_seq_q[i + 1])
Each `int(cu_seq_q[i])` on a CUDA tensor is a blocking `cudaMemcpy`, so the
provider stalled the host 2*B times, serially, before the backward kernel was
even launched — an async-launch API turned synchronous, and un-capturable
under a CUDA graph. python/cudnn/AGENTS.md Rule 3 calls this out as a
functional gap rather than a slow path.
The irony is that the correct version already existed: the autograd glue in
torch_op.py does the same conversion device-side with `searchsorted`, written
that way to stay traceable under dynamic-shape AOT dispatch. The provider had
a second, worse copy of the same logic. Extracted the good one as
`thd_lse_to_padded(lse_th, cu_seqlens_q, max_seqlen_q)` and pointed both call
sites at it, so there is one implementation.
Note the idiom that hid this: AGENTS.md names `.item()` / `.tolist()` /
`.cpu()` / `.to("cpu")` / `.numpy()`, and a grep for those over
sdpa_provider.py comes back empty. `int(tensor[i])` is the same blocking copy
wearing different clothes.
Verified: the helper's output is bit-identical to the old loop
(`torch.equal`), and `torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")` reports no
sync through the whole backward. New `test_varlen_backward_does_not_sync`
locks it in — confirmed RED against the restored host loop, green with the
helper. Provider 17 passed, ops 19 passed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rule 3 already names `int(tensor)` alongside `.item()` — the miss on the
varlen backward was not a gap in the rule, it was a reviewer (me) grepping a
subset of the spellings and concluding "clean". A list of spellings cannot be
a detector.
Adds two things learned from that bug:
- **Prove it.** `torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")` turns any blocking
D2H into a RuntimeError; wrap the execute/backward in it and keep the
assertion as a test. And check the test is RED against the old code first —
a sync test never seen to fail asserts nothing.
- **Suspect duplicated logic.** Every violation found so far has been a second
copy of a conversion that was already device-side elsewhere. Extract the
correct one instead of writing the obvious loop again.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd` served only the packed THD/varlen path; dense `(B, H, S, D)` raised NotImplementedError. That left the provider's dense training half on the Python API — forward through `cudnn::sdpa_fwd`, backward falling back to the C++ worker `aten::_cudnn_attention_backward` (the provider counts it as `calls["bwd_cpp"]`). This wires the dense path so the whole step builds its graph in Python. `_build_bwd_graph` gains `is_thd`, mirroring the forward builder. Dense differs in three ways, all of them contract rather than kernel: - no ragged-offset tensors and no per-batch length operands — an unpadded dense batch has every sequence at its declared S; - no `max_total_seq_len_q/kv`: those size the ragged dq accumulator and the node rejects them on a non-ragged layout (NVIDIA#740); - dQ/dK/dV adopt the caller's Q/K/V layouts via `_like_layout_stride`, because autograd hands them straight back as `.grad` on the caller's parameters. THD keeps returning them packed. Stats need no conversion on this path: dense LSE already is `(B, H, S, 1)` fp32, which is exactly aten's logsumexp layout for `_scaled_dot_product_cudnn_attention`, so `register_autograd` forwards the forward's stats untouched instead of running the THD scatter. The fake kernel now mirrors the dense gradient strides (the inputs' permutation, not contiguous) — otherwise opcheck's stride assertions fail under AOT dispatch. Still raising: sink backward (dSink), and dense backward with per-batch lengths (the padded dense path). Tests: six new cases in `TestSdpaBwdDense` — causal/non-causal against an fp32 reference, GQA with h_kv < h_q, end-to-end autograd, a layout check that dQ/dK/dV come back in their input's permutation, and opcheck on the dense backward. They compare RELATIVE to each tensor's magnitude: GQA dK/dV sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so a fixed absolute bound flags a correct result purely because the values got bigger (~0.5% relative on every tensor, but |dv| peaks near 9.6 at a group size of 4). Verified on SM100 (cuDNN 9.26.0.33): 25 passed, all 19 pre-existing THD tests unchanged. NOT yet verified against a FROST backward engine — those exist only for SM120 and SM80, and neither box is reachable from here; on SM100 the Router serves this through cuDNN-backend engines, which is still the Python API but not an OSS kernel. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-ups on the dense backward, plus a pre-existing gap the first one turned up. **Dense operands were never normalized.** The descriptor contract — innermost dim dense, base pointer 16B-aligned — was enforced only for THD, via `_normalize_thd`. A dense BHSD tensor with a strided last dim (a `[..., ::2]` slice) or a misaligned base breaks the descriptors exactly the same way; it is a property of the operand, not of packing. Note this was NOT introduced by the dense backward: the dense *forward* has always taken `q.stride(), k.stride(), v.stride()` as-is, so the fix covers both paths. Renamed the helper to `_normalize_operand` since nothing in its body was THD-specific. In the backward the normalization runs before the strides are read and before dO is matched to O, so a repaired O cannot leave dO on the stale layout. **The dense autograd path dropped `is_deterministic`.** The THD branch passes `torch.are_deterministic_algorithms_enabled()`; the dense branch omitted it, so `use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` still built the graph with `use_deterministic_algorithm=False` and gave non-reproducible dq. Tests: `test_dense_backward_repairs_bad_operands` covers both flaw shapes (strided innermost via `[..., ::2]`, misaligned base via a 1-element offset) and asserts numerical correctness against a reference — a mis-declared descriptor reads the wrong elements rather than failing loudly, so a smoke-test would not catch it. `test_dense_autograd_honors_deterministic_flag` runs the same inputs twice under `use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` and requires bit-identical gradients. Verified: 28 passed (was 25). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With dense backward wired into the op (previous commits), the provider no longer has to hand dense gradients to the C++ worker. `_scaled_dot_product_ cudnn_attention_backward` now calls `cudnn::sdpa_bwd` directly, and the C++ worker keeps only what the op declines: attention bias, dropout > 0, and the padded dense path (per-batch lengths). That closes the last C++ hop in a dense training step — forward and backward both build their graphs through the python API. aten hands logsumexp back as `(B, H, S)` fp32, which is the dense backward's expected layout modulo the trailing 1 the descriptor declares, so the conversion is an `unsqueeze`. The dense parity test previously asserted `bwd_cpp` incremented; it now asserts the opposite — `bwd` increments and `bwd_cpp` does NOT — so a silent regression back to the C++ path fails the suite instead of passing it. The existing numeric parity checks (against a math reference, with the stock flash backend as the rounding yardstick) are unchanged and still pass, which is what says the op's gradients are as good as the worker's. Verified: provider 17 passed, ops 28 passed. End to end on the POC bridge in pytorch_cudnn_python_api: `bridge calls: fwd=10 bwd=10` (was fwd=10 bwd=0), 10/10 cases passing. …ch ops Six things that each cost real time, written where the next person will look rather than left in a PR thread: - `test/python/sdpa/` mixes harness modules with tests, so the `test_` prefix is load-bearing — a test file dropped there without it is treated as a helper, never collected, and the suite stays green while asserting nothing. Includes the collect-only check to confirm pickup by the DEFAULT sweep. - Read pytest's own summary: `| grep -c passed` counts collection errors as passes, and `cmd | tail` reports tail's exit status — a failed build behind a pipe reads as success. Both produced wrong 'all green' reports here. - Scale tolerances to the tensor: GQA dK/dV sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so a fixed absolute bound that passes at h_kv == h_q fails at a group size of 4 while the relative error is unchanged (~0.5%). - A regression test must be seen RED against the unfixed code first. - Seed before allocating, or two runs meant to be compared differ by data. - When removing a fallback, invert its counter assertion rather than deleting it, so a silent regression to the old path fails instead of passing. …es py_test sm80 red since #554) (#863) * test(torch_provider): guard the d256 aten-op test's backward too (skip when no engine serves it) test_d256_direct_aten_op (PR #554) wrapped only the FORWARD aten call in its skip guard, and caught RuntimeError. On Ampere the forward builds fine but the BACKWARD graph is rejected at validate() by the native support surface (scaled_dot_product_flash_attention.h: hidden_dim <= 128 on this arch), which runs before any FROST routing — so no OSS engine can serve the d=256 backward from the graph API either, with or without CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES. That rejection surfaces as cudnnGraphNotSupportedError, which derives from Exception (not RuntimeError), so the guard would have missed it regardless. Result: py_test:{rel,dev}:sm80 red on every PR, e.g. https://gitlab-master.nvidia.com/cudnn/cudnn_frontend/-/jobs/421380222 Wrap forward + backward in one guard and catch both exception types; the skip reason names the arch gate. The underlying blind spot (native support surface gating graphs a FROST engine could serve — the SM80 row advertises d <= 256 backward) is architectural and tracked separately. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * review: gate the d256 aten-op test up front; skip only on engine-selection rejections CodeRabbit on #863: (1) gate unsupported configurations before allocating tensors — sm80+ and cuDNN >= 9.6 checks now lead the test, mirroring test_torch_ops.py's module gate (the suggested 9.12 floor has no source in the repo; 9.6 is the floor the sibling python-SDPA tests use); (2) do not turn every RuntimeError into a skip — cudnnGraphNotSupportedError stays the skip path, a RuntimeError skips only when its message is the engine rejection itself (unsupported / no engine), and anything else (allocation failures, autograd regressions) re-raises as a failure. Verified on A100 / backend 9.27 (develop 22ed1b1): still skips in both env modes with the arch-gate reason; test_torch_provider.py 16 passed, 1 skipped in the CI-like env. * sdpa: replace the experimental torch op with cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd (#780)
* sdpa: add torch custom ops cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd
Family-local torch contract for the features
torch.nn.functional.scaled_dot_product_attention cannot express: attention
sinks, sliding window, bottom-right causal, padded batches, and THD/varlen
packing (FA-style (T,H,D) + cu_seqlens). The ops build pygraph
sdpa/sdpa_backward nodes; the Router picks the serving plan (FROST OSS
kernels or backend engines) per config.
Contract highlights:
- register_fake meta kernels mirror the real kernels' output strides;
torch.library.opcheck passes on both paths, including dynamic-shape AOT
dispatch (torch.compile contract), and is locked in by a test.
- sdpa_fwd is differentiable on the varlen path via register_autograd; the
glue converts packed TH1 stats to the padded LSE layout device-side (no
host reads, capture/tracing-safe). Dense and sink backward raise
NotImplementedError until their engine contracts land.
- Thread-safe: thread-local cuDNN handles (a handle must not be used from
two threads), serialized graph builds, bounded (FIFO) graph cache.
- Validation: one io dtype per call, k/o/grad_out shape checks, int32
ragged-offset overflow guards, inert-flag rejection
(causal_bottom_right without an active band), clone() not contiguous()
for base-pointer realignment (contiguous() cannot fix a misaligned base).
cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd are the canonical names; the experimental
dense module's backward is renamed cudnn::sdpa_bwd_legacy so both modules
coexist in one process until it is removed.
Tests (14, L0): sinks/window/bottom-right/padded dense with LSE value
checks against an fp32 reference; THD fwd/bwd incl. GQA, kv-interleaved
views, end-to-end autograd; opcheck. Docs: docs/fe-oss-apis/sdpa-torch-ops.md.

* test(sdpa): drop the #613 xfail from test_thd_kv_packed_views
The span-derived THD capacity landed on develop in 3631ecb44, so K/V bound
as views of a kv-interleaved [T, 2, H, D] buffer are served correctly
rather than silently truncated. The test XPASSes; unmark it.

* refactor(sdpa): remove the experimental SDPA torch op
`cudnn.experimental.ops.sdpa` predates the family-local torch custom ops in
`python/cudnn/sdpa/fwd/torch_op.py` (#517) and duplicates them: it registers
its own `cudnn::sdpa` plus a backward that had to be renamed
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd_legacy` purely to avoid colliding with the canonical
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd`. Removing it retires that collision and the rename with it.
Removed:
- `python/cudnn/experimental/ops/sdpa.py` and its
`scaled_dot_product_attention` export. The package itself stays -- it still
hosts the lazy `moe_grouped_matmul` / `swiglu_mlp` aliases.
- `test/python/test_cudnn_sdpa_op.py` (16 tests covering only this op).
- The "SDPA PyTorch Custom Op (Experimental)" section of
docs/operations/Attention.md, the README bullet, and the stale `sdpa.py`
example reference in docs/adding_torch_custom_ops.md.
The three e2e benchmarks that used it now call `torch.ops.cudnn.sdpa_fwd`
directly. Both arms are inference-only (`requires_grad_(False)`, no
`.backward()`), and the op covers what they need: Qwen-Image passes
`seq_len_q`/`seq_len_kv` (padded), Qwen3.8 runs the full causal window
(`window_size` defaults to `(-1, -1)`, and its torch A/B arm already rejects
anything else). Both now raise explicitly on `dropout_p`, and Qwen3.8 raises
on a right window bound, rather than silently ignoring either.
Stacked on #517 because of that last part: the benchmarks cannot move off the
experimental op until its replacement exists, so this must merge after it.
Verified: `cudnn` and `cudnn.experimental.ops` import cleanly with the lazy
moe/swiglu aliases intact and `scaled_dot_product_attention` gone; all three
benchmark scripts compile; `test_cudnn_sdpa_torch_ops.py` 19 passed; full
test/python collection clean (54773 collected, no import errors).

* docs/test: fold the torch-op docs into Attention.md, move the test under sdpa/
Review feedback from @Anerudhan:
- The torch ops are another entry point to the same attention op, so their
docs should not live in a separate directory. `docs/fe-oss-apis/sdpa-torch-ops.md`
is gone; its content is now the "SDPA PyTorch Custom Ops" section of
docs/operations/Attention.md, alongside the FP16/BF16 and FP8 sections, with
its own anchor. Nothing linked the old file, so no dangling references.
- Tests move to `test/python/sdpa/test_torch_ops.py` — modularized by op under
the sdpa/ tree rather than one flat file per feature.
Note the `test_` prefix: pytest.ini sets no `python_files` override, so
collection is the default `test_*.py`. `test/python/sdpa/` is deliberately
the *helpers* package (fp16.py, helpers.py, random_config.py are imported,
never collected), and every real test under it is `test_*.py` (see
sdpa/frost/). A file named exactly `torch_ops.py` would have silently
stopped being collected — all 19 tests would have gone quiet. Verified the
new path yields 19 tests both when targeted directly and in the default
full-directory sweep.
Also folds in a CodeRabbit finding on the same code: `_check_same_device`
received only the auxiliary operands, so a `k`/`v`/`o` on a different CUDA
device reached cuDNN as a foreign pointer and faulted with an illegal memory
access instead of the helper's clear error. Both call sites now pass the io
tensors too.
Verified: 19 passed at the new path; black clean across test/ python/ benchmark/.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(sdpa): address review findings on the torch ops
- **Benchmarks passed `scale=None` into a `float` schema.** Both rewired
adapters keep torch's `scale=None` ("use the default") convention, but
`cudnn::sdpa_fwd` takes a required `float attn_scale`, so the default path
would have raised at dispatch. Resolve to `head_dim ** -0.5` first. Caught
by review; the old experimental wrapper accepted None and defaulted
internally, so this was introduced when the benchmarks moved over.
- **Gate the sink tests on cuDNN >= 9.13.** `scaled_dot_product_flash_attention.h`
rejects `sink_token` below 9.13 ("SDPA with sink_token is not supported
before 9.13."), while the module gate only needs 9.6 for token-major THD
stats — so `test_sinks` / `test_sinks_with_window` would fail rather than
skip on a 9.6-9.12 backend.
- **Docs example was not differentiable.** `cudnn.sdpa_torch` defaults to
`return_lse=False`, which the THD backward rejects; the wrapper example sat
in the autograd block without it. Ask for the stats explicitly.
- **RUF059**: use the already-unpacked `T_q` instead of re-reading
`q.shape[0]` two lines later (same branch, same normalized `q`).
Verified: 19 passed; all three benchmark scripts compile; black clean across
test/ python/ benchmark/.

* frost(sdpa): port the SM80 backward onto SdpaBwdDsl + TemplateParams with sym_int THD extents (issue #604) (#765)
* [SDPA] Port the SM80 backward onto the SdpaBwdDsl adapter path
SM80 now follows the SM120 backward lowering shape exactly (design doc S5 /
F-3, the backward analogue of #682): one adapter class (SdpaBwdDslSm80 in
api_dsl.py) implementing the SdpaBwdDsl contract, lowered through the shared
lower_dsl_bwd; bwd/api.py is deleted.
- SdpaBwdDslSm80: descriptor-level check_support (flavor pick, mask
resolution, dense_flex + strided-stats acceptance), no-op compile (the
kernels self-cache until the TemplateParams conversion), execute with the
full issue #514 carving (pad/gather staging, strided-stats gather, kernel
workspace tail) and the d64 fast-path routing. SM80-only operands (bias ->
dBias, RoPE) are extra optional keywords, as the contract permits.
- lower_dsl_bwd is parameterized by api_type (mirrors lower_dsl_prefill) and
now drives both backward cells; SM80-only constructor facts and execute
operands forward via signature introspection, so the SM120 adapter is
untouched. lower_sm80_bwd (the plan-time APIBase half-way house) is gone.
- sdpa_bwd_wrapper_sm80 keeps its public signature (dense via the adapter,
packed THD via the kernel varlen path); SdpabwdSm80 is replaced by
SdpaBwdDslSm80 (experimental API, exports/tests updated).
- The SM80 suites declare their backward output strides explicitly: the
shared lowering honors DECLARED port geometry (IR-inferred output strides
are provisional row-major -- the layout invariant), where the old adapter
leniently trusted caller tensor metadata.
Verified on A100: SM80 suites all levels 118 passed; test_mhas_v2 fwd+bwd
L0 = 421/0 at 100% FROST routing (fwd 623, bwd 176) through the ported path.

* frost(sdpa): convert the SM80 backward kernel to a TemplateParams module (issue #604)
The #689 analogue for the backward: bprop_f16_sm80 becomes a TemplateParams
template (bwd/config_sm80 params + validator) loaded per-specialization via
frost.template_loader, with one module-level compile(...) per shape returning
the full kernel chain (do_dot / main / dQ cast / GQA reduces / dSink); the
host backward() entry point is gone — launch marshaling lives in the adapter
(SdpaBwdDslSm80.compile/execute) and the THD functional wrapper.
THD packed token totals compile as cute.sym_int DYNAMICS (issue #604): one
artifact per (params, n_seqs) re-binds any token totals — the static
PARTIAL_Q/PARTIAL_KV gates fold False under THD_VARLEN (per-sequence bounds
ride GATE_Q/GATE_KV), and THD+deterministic is now rejected in the validator
(the dQ-relay semaphore has no plan-time size under a dynamic sq).
Also: RoPE preconditions the old backward() asserted move to the adapter
(rope_max_s coverage, tile alignment) and rope_max_s now reaches the plan
(it's part of the compiled table's shape); the d64 fast path keeps its
dedicated self-caching module (dense-only) and the d64-vs-generic test runs
the generic side through the adapter with the gate forced off; a bwd twin of
the THD compile-key regression test guards the plan-time-only key.
Dead code deleted: the legacy per-piece _compile_* wrappers (except
_compile_do_dot, which d64 imports) and the module dummy cache.
Closes #604.

* review: THD must compile at the flavor envelope dims, not the template defaults
CodeRabbit critical on the TemplateParams port: bwd_params_for_flavor seeded
only the tile geometry from the flavor's Cfg row, so the THD wrapper's
flavor-name-only params build left d_qk/d_v at the 128/128 template defaults
while the host padded the buffers to the flavor envelope — OOB grad writes at
d=64, wrong gradients at 192/256 (dense was unaffected: the adapter passes
the dims explicitly). Fix on both sides: the THD wrapper now passes
d_qk/d_v = the envelope dims (on the llama-swept tiles, matching the dense
adapter's unwired-gptoss-row policy), and bwd_params_for_flavor seeds
d_qk/d_v from the Cfg row so a flavor name alone can never mix one flavor's
tiles with another's head dims.
Tests: new test_sm80_bwd_thd_flavor_envelope_dims (d=64 and 192/128 THD vs
the dense per-sequence reference); the compile-key regression now validates
the re-bound artifact's gradients on its same-batch-count call (per-sequence
reference) and uses a genuinely different token total ([64,256] vs [96,160]).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* review: Ruff-clean per-sequence reference + tight counter window on the re-bind call
Two CodeRabbit minors on the THD test hardening: the per-sequence reference
loop's assigned lambda (E731, loop-var capture B023, unused s_len) becomes a
nested function with bound slice offsets, and the compile-cache regression
now brackets the same-batch-count re-bind call with its own counter window —
it must be a PURE cache hit (zero misses), not netted against the n_seqs=3
call's legitimate re-specialization.

* benchmark(sdpa): fall back to CUDA-event timing when CUPTI cannot attach (#824)
* benchmark(sdpa): fall back to CUDA-event timing when CUPTI cannot attach
`benchmark_single_sdpa.py` measures exclusively through `torch.profiler`,
i.e. through CUPTI. When CUPTI cannot attach, the profiler records no CUDA
events and the harness raises, so the benchmark cannot produce a number on
that machine at all:
RuntimeError: torch.profiler recorded no CUDA events for the forward pass
(CUPTI init failure?); refusing to emit unusable timings
Refusing to emit a silent 0.000 ms row is right; refusing to measure at all
is not. Fall back to CUDA-event timing of the same region instead.
The two are NOT the same measurement -- CUPTI reports summed DEVICE time of
the matched kernels, events report WALL time of the region including launch
overhead -- so the fallback is deliberately loud rather than transparent:
* a one-time warning on stderr,
* a `[cuda-events]` tag on the result line, so a fallback number can never
be mistaken for, or tabulated against, a CUPTI-timed one.
Once CUPTI is known unavailable the profiler is skipped entirely, so there
is exactly one execution per iteration. Both the profiled and the event path
call a single `_run_forward_once()` helper, which assigns the module-level
`output` so the non-cuDNN backends are not run twice per iteration merely to
retrieve it for the backward pass.
Behaviour where CUPTI works is unchanged, including the existing hard error
for "events were recorded but none matched the kernel-name filters" -- that
one is a real bug and must keep failing loudly.
Scope: forward pass only. The backward path still requires CUPTI; timing it
with events needs the same single-execution restructuring, since re-running
a backward would double-accumulate gradients.
* benchmark(sdpa): gate the CUPTI fallback on device time, not on event count
Review follow-up. The fallback was gated on `not prof.key_averages()`, i.e.
"the profiler recorded nothing at all". That is the wrong test: even a healthy
profiler reports CUDA runtime-API entries -- cudaMalloc, cudaLaunchKernel,
cudaFree, ... -- which carry `device_time == 0` alongside the real kernel
activity. Measured on A100: 14 entries, 13 of them with zero device time.
So a machine where CUPTI attaches but collects no device activity would have
taken the `else` branch and raised the "none matched the kernel-name filters"
error, which points the reader at a missing filter prefix rather than at CUPTI.
Gate on device time instead:
device_events = [item for item in prof.key_averages() if item.device_time > 0]
Falling back only when no device time was recorded anywhere also preserves the
property the previous branch already had, and which the review asked to keep:
a run that DID record kernels but matched no name filter still raises, and is
never silently re-timed as a wider region.
No behaviour change on either path that was already exercised: A100 (CUPTI
alive) still reports untagged CUPTI timings, bit-identical at 1.386 ms / 99
TFLOPS (cudnn) and 1.413 ms / 97 TFLOPS (cudnn_oss); the CUPTI-less machine
still falls back, 0.651 ms / 3379 TFLOPS.
* Sdpa native strides (#795)
* benchmark(attention_training): sum device_time_total for kernel time
key_averages() aggregates by kernel name and device_time is the per-occurrence
mean, so a kernel launched more than once per pass was counted a single time.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* benchmark(attention_inference): match the training suite's timing and layout
Time with the torch profiler, an L2 flush per iteration and the same
kernel-name filter the training suite uses, summing device_time_total rather
than device_time. One methodology across the suites is what makes a row here
comparable to a training row.
Allocate the cuDNN operands (B, S, H, D) and transpose to the logical
(B, H, S, D) the graph takes. Same logical tensor, but the physical order now
matches what a fused QKV projection produces, what the training suite
measures, and what every other backend in this file already allocates --
head-major storage was handing cuDNN a different memory layout from the
backends it is compared against.

* torch: put torch.sdpa on the cuDNN Python API (CUDNN provider + dense backward) (#554)
* torch: add the "CUDNN" torch.nn.attention provider (cudnn.torch)
Graduates the PyTorch-integration bridge into the wheel. Importing
cudnn.torch registers the "CUDNN" provider with torch.nn.attention's
flash-attention implementation registry (PyTorch 2.13+, the same mechanism
FA3/FA4 use); activation stays explicit:
import cudnn.torch
torch.nn.attention.activate_flash_attention_impl("CUDNN")
After activation, F.scaled_dot_product_attention's cuDNN backend and
torch.nn.attention.varlen.varlen_attn run on the cuDNN Python API via the
cudnn::sdpa_fwd / sdpa_bwd custom ops, with hybrid fallback to the existing
implementations for what the python path does not serve yet: dense
bias/dropout forwards, every dense backward (until dense lands in
cudnn::sdpa_bwd), and paged/asymmetric-window varlen (stock flash kernels).
Dense forwards adopt the query's layout permutation. Unlike the in-tree
cuDNN varlen branch, the provider serves GQA and causal sliding windows.
restore_flash_attention_impl() reverts; torch < 2.13 uses install().
No dependency on the experimental ops module. The [cutedsl] import boundary
is preserved (import cudnn stays torch-free; cudnn.torch is explicit
opt-in). Stacked on the cudnn::sdpa_fwd / cudnn::sdpa_bwd ops PR.

* fix(torch): drop the 2*B D2H syncs from the varlen backward
`_varlen_bwd` repadded the packed LSE with
for i in range(B):
a, b = int(cu_seq_q[i]), int(cu_seq_q[i + 1])
Each `int(cu_seq_q[i])` on a CUDA tensor is a blocking `cudaMemcpy`, so the
provider stalled the host 2*B times, serially, before the backward kernel was
even launched — an async-launch API turned synchronous, and un-capturable
under a CUDA graph. python/cudnn/AGENTS.md Rule 3 calls this out as a
functional gap rather than a slow path.
Note the idiom that hid this: AGENTS.md names `.item()` / `.tolist()` /
`.cpu()` / `.to("cpu")` / `.numpy()`, and a grep for those over
sdpa_provider.py comes back empty. `int(tensor[i])` is the same blocking copy
wearing different clothes.
Verified: the helper's output is bit-identical to the old loop
(`torch.equal`), and `torch.cuda.set_sync_debug_mode("error")` reports no
sync through the whole backward. New `test_varlen_backward_does_not_sync`
locks it in — confirmed RED against the restored host loop, green with the
helper. Provider 17 passed, ops 19 passed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* docs(agents): make the no-D2H rule verifiable, not just greppable

* feat(sdpa): dense BHSD backward in cudnn::sdpa_bwd
`cudnn::sdpa_bwd` served only the packed THD/varlen path; dense
`(B, H, S, D)` raised NotImplementedError. That left the provider's dense
training half on the Python API — forward through `cudnn::sdpa_fwd`,
backward falling back to the C++ worker `aten::_cudnn_attention_backward`
(the provider counts it as `calls["bwd_cpp"]`). This wires the dense path so
the whole step builds its graph in Python.
`_build_bwd_graph` gains `is_thd`, mirroring the forward builder. Dense
differs in three ways, all of them contract rather than kernel:
- no ragged-offset tensors and no per-batch length operands — an unpadded
dense batch has every sequence at its declared S;
- no `max_total_seq_len_q/kv`: those size the ragged dq accumulator and the
node rejects them on a non-ragged layout (#740);
- dQ/dK/dV adopt the caller's Q/K/V layouts via `_like_layout_stride`,
because autograd hands them straight back as `.grad` on the caller's
parameters. THD keeps returning them packed.
Stats need no conversion on this path: dense LSE already is
`(B, H, S, 1)` fp32, which is exactly aten's logsumexp layout for
`_scaled_dot_product_cudnn_attention`, so `register_autograd` forwards the
forward's stats untouched instead of running the THD scatter.
The fake kernel now mirrors the dense gradient strides (the inputs'
permutation, not contiguous) — otherwise opcheck's stride assertions fail
under AOT dispatch.
Still raising: sink backward (dSink), and dense backward with per-batch
lengths (the padded dense path).
Tests: six new cases in `TestSdpaBwdDense` — causal/non-causal against an
fp32 reference, GQA with h_kv < h_q, end-to-end autograd, a layout check
that dQ/dK/dV come back in their input's permutation, and opcheck on the
dense backward. They compare RELATIVE to each tensor's magnitude: GQA dK/dV
sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so a fixed absolute bound flags a correct
result purely because the values got bigger (~0.5% relative on every tensor,
but |dv| peaks near 9.6 at a group size of 4).
Verified on SM100 (cuDNN 9.26.0.33): 25 passed, all 19 pre-existing THD
tests unchanged. NOT yet verified against a FROST backward engine — those
exist only for SM120 and SM80, and neither box is reachable from here; on
SM100 the Router serves this through cuDNN-backend engines, which is still
the Python API but not an OSS kernel.

* fix(sdpa): normalize dense operands; forward the deterministic flag
Review follow-ups on the dense backward, plus a pre-existing gap the first
one turned up.
**Dense operands were never normalized.** The descriptor contract — innermost
dim dense, base pointer 16B-aligned — was enforced only for THD, via
`_normalize_thd`. A dense BHSD tensor with a strided last dim (a `[..., ::2]`
slice) or a misaligned base breaks the descriptors exactly the same way; it is
a property of the operand, not of packing. Note this was NOT introduced by the
dense backward: the dense *forward* has always taken `q.stride(), k.stride(),
v.stride()` as-is, so the fix covers both paths. Renamed the helper to
`_normalize_operand` since nothing in its body was THD-specific.
In the backward the normalization runs before the strides are read and before
dO is matched to O, so a repaired O cannot leave dO on the stale layout.
**The dense autograd path dropped `is_deterministic`.** The THD branch passes
`torch.are_deterministic_algorithms_enabled()`; the dense branch omitted it, so
`use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` still built the graph with
`use_deterministic_algorithm=False` and gave non-reproducible dq.
Tests: `test_dense_backward_repairs_bad_operands` covers both flaw shapes
(strided innermost via `[..., ::2]`, misaligned base via a 1-element offset)
and asserts numerical correctness against a reference — a mis-declared
descriptor reads the wrong elements rather than failing loudly, so a
smoke-test would not catch it. `test_dense_autograd_honors_deterministic_flag`
runs the same inputs twice under `use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` and
requires bit-identical gradients.
Verified: 28 passed (was 25).

* torch: route the provider's dense backward through cudnn::sdpa_bwd
With dense backward wired into the op (previous commits), the provider no
longer has to hand dense gradients to the C++ worker. `_scaled_dot_product_
cudnn_attention_backward` now calls `cudnn::sdpa_bwd` directly, and the C++
worker keeps only what the op declines: attention bias, dropout > 0, and the
padded dense path (per-batch lengths).
That closes the last C++ hop in a dense training step — forward and backward
both build their graphs through the python API.
aten hands logsumexp back as `(B, H, S)` fp32, which is the dense backward's
expected layout modulo the trailing 1 the descriptor declares, so the
conversion is an `unsqueeze`.
The dense parity test previously asserted `bwd_cpp` incremented; it now
asserts the opposite — `bwd` increments and `bwd_cpp` does NOT — so a silent
regression back to the C++ path fails the suite instead of passing it. The
existing numeric parity checks (against a math reference, with the stock
flash backend as the rounding yardstick) are unchanged and still pass, which
is what says the op's gradients are as good as the worker's.
Verified: provider 17 passed, ops 28 passed. End to end on the POC bridge in
pytorch_cudnn_python_api: `bridge calls: fwd=10 bwd=10` (was fwd=10 bwd=0),
10/10 cases passing.

* docs(agents): record the concrete test traps hit while wiring the torch ops
Six things that each cost real time, written where the next person will look
rather than left in a PR thread:
- `test/python/sdpa/` mixes harness modules with tests, so the `test_` prefix
is load-bearing — a test file dropped there without it is treated as a
helper, never collected, and the suite stays green while asserting nothing.
Includes the collect-only check to confirm pickup by the DEFAULT sweep.
- Read pytest's own summary: `| grep -c passed` counts collection errors as
passes, and `cmd | tail` reports tail's exit status — a failed build behind
a pipe reads as success. Both produced wrong 'all green' reports here.
- Scale tolerances to the tensor: GQA dK/dV sum over h_q/h_kv query heads, so
a fixed absolute bound that passes at h_kv == h_q fails at a group size of 4
while the relative error is unchanged (~0.5%).
- A regression test must be seen RED against the unfixed code first.
- Seed before allocating, or two runs meant to be compared differ by data.
- When removing a fallback, invert its counter assertion rather than deleting
it, so a silent regression to the old path fails instead of passing.

amax_s_gpu back, so the only effects were a stream-ordered zero-fill per
execute and the work the backend does to produce the value.
It also made every FP8 case unrunnable on --sdpa_backend cudnn_oss. The FROST
engines dropped Amax_S in #602 and decline any graph that declares one, so
pin_frost_engine_or_skip() found no eligible plan and the case exited
UNSUPPORTED_CONFIG -- for every head dim, on SM100, SM107 and SM120 alike.
Stop requesting it: leave the port virtual (the FP8 suites already do this,

* sdpa: validate Bias dim/stride like every other SDPA I/O tensor (#823)
CUDNN_FE_SDPA_VALIDATE_DIM_STRIDE checks that Q/K/V/O (and, in the
backward nodes, Stats/dO/dQ/dK/dV) have 4-D dim/stride and that the
last (embedding-per-head) dimension is contiguous, but Bias was never
included in any of the three call sites (fwd, composite bwd, fp8
bwd). A Bias tensor with a non-unit last-dim stride therefore skips
validation entirely and is read at whatever stride the caller
declared, silently, instead of failing fast with GRAPH_NOT_SUPPORTED.
Add the same existence-guarded check used elsewhere for optional
Bias handling (e.g. the bias score-modifier call sites) to all three
pre_validate_node() implementations.

- AGENTS.md: note that pip -e installs pin one checkout via sys.meta_path,

- .github/pull_request_template.md: add a checklist item to review the

* AGENTS.md: land recurring review lessons mined from PR review history
Distilled from reviewer comments (mostly Anerudhan's) across PRs #246,
#266, #280, #517, #553, #747, #797, #811, #814 — each verified against
the original review thread:
- python/cudnn Rule 1: overlapping optional declarations (ragged vs
cu_seqlen vs seq_len) are validated as a set; ambiguous combos error out.
- python/cudnn Rule 4: compile keys carry exactly the contract-relevant
set — under-keying reuses a wrong artifact, over-keying recompiles.
- python/cudnn Rule 5: device context is implicit state like the stream;
pointer args validated for device-residency + dtype.
- include/: version-gated APIs declare unconditionally, gate in the body
at runtime (conditional declarations bake the build-time version in).
- root: append-only public API signatures; never delete log statements in
cleanups; SPDX header on new files.
- test/: check module-level pytestmark before adding per-test markers.
* Address review: move THD rule to sdpa guide, automate SPDX, fix PR template
Slack + PR review feedback on #843:
- Yang: THD Stats rule was out of place among the generally-applicable
rules — moved to a new python/cudnn/sdpa/AGENTS.md as Rule S1 (SDPA
rules get their own S-numbering so citations stay unambiguous).
- Yang: automate the SPDX check — added an spdx-license-header pre-commit
hook (pygrep, fails any staged C++/CUDA/Python file missing an
SPDX-License-Identifier line) and added the header to the 8 tracked
source files that were missing it, so the hook is clean repo-wide.
Verified: hook fails a header-less probe file, passes --all-files.
- Anerudhan + Vedaanta: Milestone/Projects are set by reviewers/
maintainers, not authors — dropped the checklist item; label groups are
cat-* / area:*+op:* / orig-* (not mod-*) in the template and AGENTS.md.
* Address CodeRabbit review: strict SPDX pattern, correct head-major stride bound
- .pre-commit-config.yaml: the SPDX hook now requires a *commented*
SPDX-License-Identifier line with a non-empty identifier
('^\s*(?:#|//|\*|/\*)\s*SPDX-License-Identifier:\s*\S+'), so a string
literal mentioning the marker no longer satisfies it. Verified: fails
a 'marker = "SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT"' probe and a header-less
probe, passes --all-files.
- python/cudnn/sdpa/AGENTS.md Rule S1: the head-major non-overlap bound
is the packed token count T (stride_h >= H was wrong — per-head slices
alias when T > stride_h). Documented why plan time can only classify
(stride_s == 1, stride_h >= 1): T is a runtime total, so the capacity
check is execute-time.
* Rule S1: head-major stride_h >= T is caller contract in THD, not adapter-checked
CodeRabbit correctly noted as_strided bounds-checks storage capacity,
never overlap, so an in-bounds stride_h < T head-major view would alias.
But the packed total is a device value in the THD path — Rule 3 bans the
host read that a host-side stride_h >= T check would need, which is why
_thd_lse_view's docstring declares covering the packed total as caller
contract. State that precisely instead of implying an execute-time check
exists, and warn against "fixing" it with a host-side length read.
* sdpa(#624): clamp the f16 THD K/V descriptor extents to the packed total, and NaN-poison ragged capacity tails in test_mhas_v2 (#646)
* test(mhas_v2): NaN-poison ragged capacity tails so capacity-vs-live-token bugs fail deterministically (GitHub #624)
The f16/bf16 harness filled the entire packed K/V/Q/dO capacity - pad
tokens included - with finite random data, so an engine that reads past
the last ragged offset (e.g. THD zero-host-read binding K/V views to
buffer capacity instead of live token counts) stayed green: the padding
mask turns finite garbage into exact zeros, while real recycled device
memory holds NaN bit patterns and 0 x NaN = NaN poisons whole output
rows. The fp8 harness already NaN-fills its pads via
convert_uniform_to_packed, which is why the only test able to catch
GitHub #624 in the wild was fp8 ragged - and only with a lucky seed.
- packed_token_capacity: capacity is now always strictly greater than
the packed total (next multiple of 64), so every ragged buffer has a
poisonable tail; previously an exact-multiple total had no tail and
the bug class structurally could not fire.
- fp16 harness: NaN-fill the capacity tail of Q/K/V/dO after the random
fill, matching the fp8 harness contract.
- fp16/fp8 harnesses: use the shared packed_token_capacity instead of
three duplicated inline formulas.
Validation on SM100 (B200):
- native routing: failure set bit-identical to unmodified develop on
MHAS_NUM_TESTS=16/32 ragged sweeps (no collateral).
- FROST routing (CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1, checkout with
the #606 zero-host-read path): old harness 24/24 ragged f16 fwd pass;
new harness fails 19/24 with the exact #624 signature (o_gpu 24% NaN
in valid rows).
mxfp8 note: the mxfp8 harness has no ragged/THD path (its random
configs never draw "ragged"), so this class is not yet exercisable
there; fp8 covers the 1-byte-dtype THD engines.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* test(mhas_v2): stop drawing silently-ignored padded configs for mxfp8
The sdpa_mxfp8 python API has no seq_len/padding arguments and
exec_sdpa_mxfp8 never reads cfg.seq_len_q/kv, so a "padded" draw ran
dense-full while the repro config claimed padding — inflated coverage.
Draw full-only with a pointer to re-add padded/ragged once the API
grows seq-len support (the shared packed_token_capacity /
convert_uniform_to_packed helpers then provide the NaN-poisoned
capacity tails from the previous commit automatically).
Also documents the analogous fp8 gap in-place: a dense "padded" draw
runs as full because exec_sdpa_fp8 binds seq_len tensors only on the
paged and ragged paths.

* frost(sdpa): clamp the f16 THD K/V descriptors to the packed total (issue #624)
A THD caller binds K/V at BUFFER CAPACITY, not at the packed total, and the
descriptor extent is the host-derived capacity. Rows in [total, capacity) are
therefore inside the extent and get loaded. They are masked, so P == 0 -- but
0 * NaN == NaN, so an uninitialized capacity tail wipes whole tiles of O.
The FP8/MXFP8 flavors have always handled this: build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel
copies the K/V base TensorMaps into o_desc_words and patches GLOBAL_DIM ord=2 to
cu_k[B] device-side, so tail rows become TMA-OOB and land as exact zeros -- no
memory touched, nothing written into the caller's buffer. The f16/bf16 flavors
used the O-only setup variant and had no clamp.
Port it: build_thd_meta_o_descs_kernel takes base_k_desc/base_v_desc and writes
the two clamped descriptors after the dead-unit pad slot; all four f16 SM100
kernels (d128, d192_d128, d256, d512) thread o_desc_words into
_tmaldg_warp_group and bind tma_k/tma_v to runtime-descriptor closures under
CFG.THD_VARLEN; _odesc_len and api_dsl's o_desc_slots grow by two slots (which
is now unconditional for THD, not FP8-only).
The clamp block is duplicated rather than factored into a helper on purpose: a
plain Python function called from a @cute.kernel body is not AST-transformed,
and hoisting it turns these tests red.
Adds test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail: three sequences totalling 397 (not a
multiple of TILE_N, so the last tile steps past it) bound into capacity-sized
Q/K/V buffers whose tails are NaN. Asserts O is finite and matches the
per-sequence reference.
Validation, B200 SM100, cuDNN 9.26.0.33, CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES=1,
same setup for both columns:
test_mhas_v2 -k fwd_ragged_L0 without clamp: 19 failed / 27 passed
with clamp: 0 failed / 46 passed
test_mhas_v2 -k fwd (dense +
ragged + fp8 + mxfp8) 212 passed, 28 skipped, 0 failed
SM120 (prefill_f16_sm120.py) still lacks the clamp -- it uses the meta-only
build_thd_meta_kernel, so the K/V slots must be introduced rather than switched.
* docs(agents): record the CuTeDSL kernel-body and editable-install traps
Two traps that each cost real debugging time on issue #624, written down with
the runnable check rather than as prose advice.
python/cudnn/AGENTS.md -- do not factor code out of a @cute.kernel body into a
plain Python helper. The DSL AST-transforms only the decorated function's own
source (for -> ir_loop, if -> scf region); a helper is not transformed, so the
ops it emits can land outside the enclosing region. Hoisting an 11-line block
that ran correctly inline turned 212 passing forward tests into 31 failures.
These break at compile(), not at import, so --collect-only stays green.
test/AGENTS.md -- confirm you are testing the code you edited. `pip install -e .`
installs a sys.meta_path finder whose MAPPING hard-codes one checkout; meta-path
finders beat sys.path, so PYTHONPATH cannot shadow it and edits in a second
clone or a git worktree are silently not under test. The symptom is
indistinguishable from a real result: a deliberately destructive probe leaves
the output bit-identical. Includes the `python -c "import cudnn; print(...)"`
check and a sitecustomize.py recipe for redirecting the finder for one run.
* test(sdpa): the undeclared THD path is NaN-safe now too (issue #624)
test_dsl_sm100_thd_declared_total_bounds_capacity_tail ended with a control
asserting that WITHOUT max_total_seq_len the capacity tail is still reachable,
so that the clamp assertions above it were testing the clamp rather than a
benign shape. The device-side K/V extent clamp makes that false by design --
the tail is now out of reach on every THD flavor, declared or not -- which is
the case the assertion's own message called out as "needs rethinking".
Invert it: assert the undeclared path is clean, that O is independent of the
tail fill either way, and that declaring the total does not change the result
bit for bit. Declaring is now a host-side tightening (capacity, grid and
workspace sizing) rather than the only thing standing between the kernel and
the tail.
Seen red: with the clamp reverted and these tests kept, 7 failed
(test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail at 201728/403456/806912 NaNs in O across
d128/d256/d512, plus this test); with the clamp, 7 passed.
* test(sdpa): cover the d192/d128 flavor in the capacity-tail test; drop the hard-coded finder version
Two CodeRabbit findings on #646, both valid.
test_dsl_sm100_thd_nan_capacity_tail parametrized a single `d` over _FLAVORS,
so it could only select d128/d256/d512 -- it never reached the d192/d128
flavor, which is one of the four kernels this PR changes. Parametrize
(d_qk, d_v) over [(128,128), (192,128), (256,256), (512,512)] instead, with Q/K
at d_qk and V/O at d_v (separate ragged offsets per width). Confirmed the new
case is a real regression guard: with the clamp reverted, dsv3 fails at 201728
NaNs in O for both dtypes; with it, all 8 combos pass.
test/AGENTS.md hard-coded __editable___nvidia_cudnn_frontend_1_28_0_finder in
the sitecustomize recipe, which raises ModuleNotFoundError once __version__
bumps -- and it would fail before reaching the MAPPING patch, i.e. exactly when
the reader is already confused about which checkout is loaded. Discover the
module via pkgutil.iter_modules() instead. The recipe as written is the one
used to validate this PR.
* test(sdpa): drop the unused packed-storage bindings in the capacity-tail test
RUF059: q_stor/k_stor/v_stor were never read after unpacking. The as_strided
view keeps its storage alive on its own, so _poisoned_buf now returns just the
view rather than the pair. o_stor stays bound -- the assertions read the packed
prefix out of it.

* frost(sdpa): per-tensor FP8 d512 forward kernel on SM100 (#845)
* frost(sdpa): per-tensor FP8 d512 forward kernel on SM100
Adds prefill_d512_fp8_sm100.py, the FP8 (E4M3/E5M2) sibling of the d512
f16 kernel, and routes the SM100 per-tensor FP8 engine to it. Same cga4x1
role-split pipeline, Q u K_ring SMEM alias, UTCCP(Q -> TMEM) + mma_ts BMM1
and THD leg; every delta is dtype-driven and derived from CFG:
- STAGES_KV = XFER_STAGES = 3. BPE=1 halves the K/V ring, and FP8 packs
4 elements per 4-byte TMEM column, so the UTCCP'd Q costs 128 cols
instead of 256 and a third S_acc parity fits: 3*128 + 128 = 512, exactly
at the Blackwell TMEM cap.
- MMA_KIND = F8F6F4, TILE_K_HW = 32, idesc k_dim = 0 -- the Blackwell K=32
QMMA step. Both k_dim values are derived from CFG.TILE_K_HW_* so they
cannot drift into the Rubin k_dim=1 combination, which is silently wrong
here (per-row scrambled accumulator, no crash).
- P_XFER_HALVES = (TILE_N*BPE)//Q_SWZ_BYTES collapses to 1: a 128-column
FP8 P row is a single swizzle atom, so the sg0->sg1 KV-split degenerates
to one whole-P chunk. The BMM2 K-half unroll becomes a loop over it.
- The Q u O SMEM alias is sized in BYTES, and sO is viewed as
OUT_STORAGE_DTYPE. An element-sized alias under-allocates when
BPE_O = 2 (FP8 in, BF16/FP16 out) and the wider O store overflows into
the P-transfer ring.
- Per-tensor descales are read from DEVICE (no host readback):
descale_q*descale_k folds into scale_softmax_log2 and descale_v*scale_o
into o_scale_fused, which the epilogue folds into beta. Amax_O is an
atomicMax over the fp32 pre-cast output, reduced with a TERNARY tree
(_abs_max_tree): the obvious running max builds a TILE_O-deep dependency
chain on the epilogue's critical path and cost ~7% of kernel time at
S=8192. A fully-masked row needs no per-element sanitizing -- its O TMEM
is written by the MMA with a zero P -- so one select on the row's scalar
result covers the dead-row case.
- THD rides the FP8 setup variant (build_thd_meta_o_kv_descs_kernel), so
K/V load through packed-total-clamped runtime descriptors: the last
sequence's tile steps past the packed total into the caller's capacity
tail, and a NaN there would wipe the tile through BMM2's P.V, since
masking zeroes P and not V.
Head-dim coverage. The flavor serves (256, 512] on BOTH head dims -- the
band no smaller FP8 flavor reaches -- through the usual TMA zero-padding
envelope, so d_qk != d_v is served too. The floor is new row data
(Capabilities.d_envelope_floors, mirrored by api_dsl): without it the d512
shape would act as a plain upper bound and swallow e.g. a d256 graph at 2x
zero-padding. api_dsl._pick_flavor also takes the candidate set now, so an
FP8 graph can no longer land on the d256 flavor, which has no FP8 kernel.
The graph-level support surface rejected d_qk > 128 for sdpa_fp8 before any
engine was consulted; it now admits the same (256, 512] band.
Not in scope: split-KV (needs a half-precision O and its own combine-side
amax) and MXFP8 (no d512 block-scale kernel).
Tested on Blackwell (cc10.0): 34 new cases in test_sdpa_fwd_fp8_sm100.py --
masks, all 8 in x out dtype pairs, sink, GQA/MQA, per-batch KV padding, LSE,
multi-wave, the (256, 512] envelope band, and THD (self/cross attention,
GQA, sink + ragged stats, zero-length KV, cu_seq_len form) -- plus accept
and reject coverage for the new floor in test_sdpa_fp8_sm107.py. The rest
of sdpa/frost is unchanged; the three *_strided_stats failures on this node
pre-date the branch (they need a cuDNN backend >= 9.26 and the node has
9.25.1).
Perf: kernel-only GPU time (nsys, B=1 H=8 S=8192 d=512 dense E4M3) is
530.8 us against 521.4 us for the pre-upstream VibeTile dsv4 kernel this was
ported from -- 1.8%, which is the in-kernel Amax_O that kernel does not
compute.
* test(sdpa): assert the d512 THD zero-length-KV LSE against its reference
CodeRabbit flagged `lse_ref` as unbound-but-unused in
test_fp8_d512_thd_zero_len_kv. It was, and renaming it to `_` would have
hidden the real problem: the test only asserted that the DEAD rows come back
-inf and never checked the live sequences' LSE at all, so a wrong-but-finite
LSE on them would have passed.
Assert the whole ragged Stats buffer against the reference, the way the d128
sibling (test_fp8_thd_zero_len_kv) already does, and keep the explicit
dead-row check next to it since that is the point of the case. Also pick up
the sibling's second shape -- a zero-length Q sequence, which contributes no
tile at all -- which the d512 copy had dropped.
50 passed (-k "d512 or thd") on Blackwell cc10.0.
* Benchmark cudnn_oss for kimi_k3/deepseek_v4 and flash_attention (FA2) on Ampere (#852)
* Enable cudnn_oss backend for kimi_k3 and deepseek_v4 training benchmarks
kimi_k3 has the same attention geometry as dsv3 (head_dim_qk=192,
head_dim_vo=128), whose config already benchmarks cudnn_oss - the backend
was simply never added when kimi_k3 was introduced. deepseek_v4
(head_dim=512) is the model class the SM100 d512 forward flavor was built
for, but without cudnn_oss in its config that kernel is never exercised by
the benchmark. Architectures without a matching kernel record the
unsupported combos in the CSV per the existing convention.
* Benchmark flash_attention (FA2) on Ampere in the llama training config
FA4 backward asserts SM90+ (its forward supports SM80), so the Ampere
dashboard has no flash-attention backward reference column. FA2 supports
the SM80 backward and ships in the base container, so include it as a
backend when the visible device is Ampere; on SM90+ FA4 remains the
reference and FA2 is not run.
* Extend the Ampere-only FA2 backend to all training configs
Moves the Ampere gate into a shared config_types.fa2_on_ampere() helper and
applies it uniformly: every training config benchmarks flash_attention when
the visible device is SM 8.x, giving the Ampere dashboards a flash-attention
backward reference wherever FA2 can serve the shape. Models whose head dims
FA2 cannot serve (mismatched Q/KV dims or head_dim > 256) record the
unsupported combos as failed rows per the existing convention. SM90+ runs
are unchanged.
* Apply black formatting to fa2_on_ampere helper
* frost gemm heur: score real M, densify the tile scan, never pad the cluster grid (#844)
* frost gemm heur: score real M, densify the tile scan, never pad the cluster grid
Follow-up to #781, revised against what the first exhaustive sweep of that
logic showed:
* _tile_score was fed _floor_pow2(M), a bucketing convenience inherited from
the flashinfer heuristic's cache design. frost does not bucket, so snapping
M=7009 to 4096 just misstated the launched M-tiles and last-tile padding,
over-ranking short tiles for every non-power-of-2 M. Score the real M.
* The tile scan gains the hardware-legal intermediate N widths (96/160/192/
224) and the 64-tall family extends to M <= 512 (measured wins well past
one tile row), 128 scanned first so ties keep the taller tile. Plain
single-GEMM row-major-B path only, as before.
* Block-scale problems take the 2-CTA MMA pair even without a second M tile
(halved per-CTA B footprint buys pipeline depth) while the padded pair row
still fits one wave; past that the padding costs a whole wave.
* Under a single wave _cluster_score's quantisation and occupancy terms
cancel, so a padded cluster launch tied with an exact fit and pool order
decided. Break ties by fewest launched CTAs (never pad), then by the
sweep's measured preference, A-multicast (cta_group, 4), which wins the
remaining tie group in every measured cohort.
Measured against exhaustive per-layer sweeps of the 248-layer golden set
(GEMMs extracted via FlashInfer API logs of priority models; fp8 per-tensor
and nvfp4 block-scale), silicon-retimed heuristic efficiency (chosen /
best-swept): fp8 0.874->0.937 (sm100), 0.884->0.936 (sm103); fp4
0.911->0.956 (sm100), 0.917->0.955 (sm103). Validated the same way on every
other architecture frost supports.

* test: the auto path now owns the catalog widths, pin the new invariants
test_the_auto_path_never_picks_a_non_power_of_two_tile pinned the old
scan's {32,64,128,256} ladder; the densified scan makes 96/160/192/224
the engine's own picks on the plain path, so the invariant moves: every
auto width is a hardware-legal multiple of 32 within [32,256], every
pick resolves in the catalog, and the CONSTRAINED paths (block-scale,
multi-GEMM) still produce only powers of two.

* Thd persistent grid (#848)
* frost(sdpa): put the d256 SM100 THD grid on the persistent scheduler
The d256 THD launch sized its grid to the plan-time S_q envelope, so a
caller declaring S_q far above its live token count paid for the dead
clusters that covered the gap. The f16 setup kernel already publishes the
live unit total and a claim counter, so switch the scheduler warp to the
persistent claim loop and let the adapter cap the grid to what the device
holds resident.
Add a d256 case covering a cluster that claims more than one unit: the
existing THD cases all fit inside a single wave, so none of them re-enter
the K/V pipeline for a second unit.
* frost(sdpa): put the remaining SM100 THD grids on the persistent scheduler
Extends the d256 conversion to the d192/d128, d512 and FP8-family flavors,
so every SM100 THD launch is sized to the machine rather than to the
plan-time S_q envelope.
The FP8-family setup kernel built the metadata and the batch remap but
never wrote the live unit total or the claim counter, so a persistent
scheduler there read uninitialized workspace. Write both, as the f16
setup kernel already did.
Cap the grid on CGA_SIZE (CTAs per cluster) rather than CTA_MMA. The two
agree on the cga2 flavors, but d512 pairs CGA_M=4 with CTA_MMA=2, and
neither d512 nor d192/d128 exports CTA_MMA at all — so the old lookup fell
back to 1 and would have over-launched the grid several times over.
Add multi-unit-per-CTA cases across the flavors: the existing THD tests
all fit inside a single wave, so none of them re-enters the K/V pipeline
for a second unit.
* frost(sdpa): enable the LPT/LPT_L2 scheduler on the SM107 fp8 row (#850)
Every scheduler decode call site in the SM107 per-tensor FP8 prefill
sibling threads qh_per_kh/seqlen_kv, which is what the shared
_common_sm100 LPT_L2 decode requires, so the row no longer has to pin
its sched domain to SCHED_NATURAL. The L2 figure the remap groups
against (CFG.L2_SIZE_MIB) is a tuning hint for the grouping rather than
a chip capacity, so the SM100 number carries to Rubin unchanged.

* frost(sdpa): SM80 backward native strided-LSE reads + THD max_s_kv grid hint (#766)
The #712 analogue for the backward's LOADS: the main-bprop and dSink kernels
read the Stats/LSE input stride-aware, compiled against the DECLARED
(B, H, SQ) strides (module compile() gains a plan-time lse_stride key; a
contiguous plan keeps the packed compact fake — byte-identical codegen).
The adapter drops the strided-stats gather staging entirely: sizing loses
the staging term, execute binds the caller's storage through a checked
declared-layout view (the reader twin of the forward's _checked_lse_view),
and the SM120 bwd adapter's existing _lse_strides convention now has its
SM80 counterpart. The d64 fast path keeps legacy packed reads, so a strided
Stats declaration routes to the generic module (plan-time gate). THD keeps
packed math — the grid batch index is the logical sequence, not the
tensor's batch-1 dim.
THD wrapper: a max_s_kv grid hint (any upper bound — short kv-tiles
early-out) removes the wrapper's only D2H sync; n_seq was already shape
metadata. Hint-less calls keep the documented host read of cu_k. The
dense path rejects the hint loudly.
Tests: strided-stats bitwise-vs-contiguous with equal workspace bytes
(no staging), and max_s_kv exact/over-provisioned bitwise checks plus the
dense-path rejection.

* Add tanh_clamp_scale to grouped GEMM srelu/dsrelu kernels Optional tanh soft-clamp for the squared-ReLU epilogues of the SM100 block-scaled grouped GEMM kernels, forward and backward: (#858)
forward: out = (s * tanh(relu(x) / s))^2 * prob (plain srelu is the s -> inf limit)
backward: dgrad = g * 2c(1 - t^2) * prob; dprob = sum(c^2 * g); d_srelu regen = c^2 * prob
The scale is a trace-time constant folded into the compiled kernel and included in the compile-cache key. tanh_clamp_scale=None (default) is bit-identical to the unclamped path, covered by explicit None-vs-omitted torch.equal tests. t is capped at 1 defensively (measured: tanh.approx never exceeds 1).
Tested on GB300 (sm_103): full srelu + dsrelu suites green, including clamped cases (two scales x fp8/fp4 x vector_f32 x reuse x deterministic), cache-key tests, forward/backward regen consistency, and an fp64 autograd check that the closed-form backward is the forward's derivative.
* test(torch_provider): guard the d256 aten-op test's backward too (fixes py_test sm80 red since #554) (#863)
* test(torch_provider): guard the d256 aten-op test's backward too (skip when no engine serves it)
test_d256_direct_aten_op (PR #554) wrapped only the FORWARD aten call in its
skip guard, and caught RuntimeError. On Ampere the forward builds fine but
the BACKWARD graph is rejected at validate() by the native support surface
(scaled_dot_product_flash_attention.h: hidden_dim <= 128 on this arch), which
runs before any FROST routing — so no OSS engine can serve the d=256 backward
from the graph API either, with or without CUDNN_FRONTEND_ENABLE_FROST_ENGINES.
That rejection surfaces as cudnnGraphNotSupportedError, which derives from
Exception (not RuntimeError), so the guard would have missed it regardless.
Result: py_test:{rel,dev}:sm80 red on every PR, e.g.
https://gitlab-master.nvidia.com/cudnn/cudnn_frontend/-/jobs/421380222
Wrap forward + backward in one guard and catch both exception types; the
skip reason names the arch gate. The underlying blind spot (native support
surface gating graphs a FROST engine could serve — the SM80 row advertises
d <= 256 backward) is architectural and tracked separately.

* review: gate the d256 aten-op test up front; skip only on engine-selection rejections
CodeRabbit on #863: (1) gate unsupported configurations before allocating
tensors — sm80+ and cuDNN >= 9.6 checks now lead the test, mirroring
test_torch_ops.py's module gate (the suggested 9.12 floor has no source in
the repo; 9.6 is the floor the sibling python-SDPA tests use); (2) do not
turn every RuntimeError into a skip — cudnnGraphNotSupportedError stays the
skip path, a RuntimeError skips only when its message is the engine
rejection itself (unsupported / no engine), and anything else (allocation
failures, autograd regressions) re-raises as a failure.
Verified on A100 / backend 9.27 (develop 22ed1b1fe): still skips in both
env modes with the arch-gate reason; test_torch_provider.py 16 passed,
1 skipped in the CI-like env.

* frost(sdpa): bound the SM80 backward q-loop by the sliding window (6-12x on gpt_oss-style SWA) + window-aware deterministic relay (#866)
* frost(sdpa): bound the SM80 bprop q-loop by the sliding window + window-aware deterministic relay
The SM80 backward bounded each kv-tile's q-loop only from below (the causal
skip) and applied the sliding window purely as a per-element mask, so every
kv-tile swept all q-tiles to the end of the sequence: O(S^2) work for an
O(S*W) problem. The A100 attention_training dashboard showed it on the
gpt_oss config (W=128, d=64): cudnn_oss backward 5x slower than the cuDNN
backend at S=2k, 19x at 8k, 75x at 32k, while the forward already trims its
kv range by the window (kv_left).
Add the upper bound: a kv-tile [kv_base, kv_base+tile_kv) is attended by no q
with anchor(q) > kv_base + tile_kv - 1 + W (anchor = q, or q + causal_diag
under bottom-right), so n_iters is capped at ceil((kv_base + tile_kv + W -
diag) / tile_q) - q_lo_tile; fully-masked tiles run 0 iters and store dK =
dV = 0. THD uses in-sequence indices, so the bound is per packed sequence.
Deterministic path: the dQ relay spun until counter == kv_tile, which assumes
every lower kv-tile visited the q-tile. A high-end cut breaks that (q_hi grows
with kv_tile), so the relay now counts turns from the q-tile's first visitor,
kv_first = max((q_row0 + diag - W) // tile_kv, 0) — the inverse of the clamp —
for both the acquire target and the release value (SM120 precedent:
bprop_f16_sm120.py relay_turn). Without a window it folds to kv_tile.

Summary
Puts
torch.sdpafully on the cuDNN Python API — forward and backward, dense and varlen. Supersedes #837, whose commits are folded in here (dense backward is what makes the provider's last C++ fallback removable, so the two only mean something together).What lands
The
"CUDNN"provider (python/cudnn/torch/). Registers withtorch.nn.attention's flash-impl registry (PyTorch 2.13+, the mechanism FA3/FA4 use) and overrides the CUDA kernels ofaten::_scaled_dot_product_cudnn_attention{,_backward}, soF.scaled_dot_product_attentionundersdpa_kernel([CUDNN_ATTENTION])andtorch.nn.attention.varlen.varlen_attnrun on pygraph + the engine Router. Registration is passive; activation stays explicit.Dense BHSD backward in
cudnn::sdpa_bwd(was #837). The op served only packed THD; dense raisedNotImplementedError._build_bwd_graphgainsis_thd, mirroring the forward builder — dense has no ragged offsets, no length operands, nomax_total_seq_len_*(rejected on a non-ragged layout, #740), and its dQ/dK/dV adopt the caller's Q/K/V layouts since autograd returns them as.grad.The provider's dense backward then stops falling back. The C++ worker keeps only what the op declines — bias, dropout, padded dense. That closes the last C++ hop in a dense training step.
Review fixes folded in
2*BD2H syncs per varlen backward._varlen_bwdrepadded the LSE withfor i in range(B): int(cu_seq_q[i])— each one a blockingcudaMemcpy, stalling the host serially before the kernel launched, and un-capturable (AGENTS.md Rule 3). The correct device-side conversion already existed intorch_op.py's autograd; the provider had a second, worse copy. Extracted asthd_lse_to_padded(), called from both._normalize_thdis now_normalize_operand.is_deterministic, souse_deterministic_algorithms(True)still built a non-deterministic backward.int(tensor); the miss was a reviewer grepping a subset of spellings. Greps are not detectors —set_sync_debug_mode("error")is.Verification
pytorch_cudnn_python_api)fwd=10 bwd=10— wasbwd=0The dense parity test now asserts
bwdincrements andbwd_cppdoes not, so a silent regression to the C++ path fails the suite rather than passing it. Its numeric checks (math reference, with the stock flash backend as the rounding yardstick) are unchanged and still pass — that is what says the op's gradients are as good as the worker's.New tests cover the D2H property directly (
test_varlen_backward_does_not_sync, confirmed RED against the restored host loop), bad dense operands (strided innermost, misaligned base — asserting numerical correctness, since a mis-declared descriptor reads wrong elements rather than failing loudly), and determinism (same inputs twice, bit-identical gradients required).Not covered here
A FROST backward engine. Those exist only for SM120 and SM80; SM100 has none, filed as #836. On this box the Router serves the dense backward through cuDNN-backend engines — still the Python API, not an OSS kernel. A script for an sm120/sm80 box is on #836; worth a run there before merge.
