What does this PR do?

Type of change: documentation (agent skill)

Follow-up to #2841. The evaluation skill's doom_loops.md turns on vLLM's repetition_detection and says a hit ends the request with finish_reason: "repetition". On nemo-skills tasks (ns_*) the opposite happens:

  • The client rejects the response. The nemo-skills client is litellm, and it validates finish_reason against the OpenAI set. "repetition" fails with a pydantic literal_error, which surfaces as an InternalServerError.
  • nemo-skills retries the request. At temperature > 0 the retry resamples the sample until it stops looping. The detector then inflates a damaged model's score instead of ending its loops, and it costs extra generation besides.

This PR adds the fix to the page: remap the reason to length in the serving container through deployment.pre_cmd. A hit then scores as a truncated, unanswered sample, the same as one that hit max_new_tokens. The probe in Guards now checks stop_reason, which reads repetition_detected whether or not the reason is remapped. The old finish_reason check would read length after the remap, which is also what the probe treats as "ignored".

Usage

deployment:
  pre_cmd: |-
    F=$(python3 -c 'import os, vllm; print(os.path.join(os.path.dirname(vllm.__file__), "v1", "engine", "__init__.py"))')
    sed -i 's/"abort", "error", "repetition")/"abort", "error", "length")/' "$F"
    grep -q '"error", "length")' "$F" || { echo "finish_reason remap failed"; exit 1; }

Submit with NEMO_EVALUATOR_TRUST_PRE_CMD=1.

Testing

All runs used GLM-5.3-Flash with IQ2_XXS experts (GPTQ), NEL 0.2.6, nemo-skills:26.03, and vLLM 0.1.dev20051 with RepetitionDetectionParams, on oci-jhb. Detector settings were 256/32/3, with AA-LCR at 1024.

  • Canary without the remap: the server finished 23 of 82 AA-LCR requests, 1 GPQA request and 1 SciCode request with repetition. The client log shows 64 literal_error validation errors and 16 litellm InternalServerErrors from nemo-skills' retry path. None of the repetition responses reached the outputs: the 55 AA-LCR records written all ended stop.
  • Canary with the pre_cmd above: the server log confirms the remap. There were no literal_errors in any task's client log, over 143 GPQA and 25 SciCode completions so far. AA-LCR was still starting.
  • Remap in the image: inside the serving image, FINISH_REASON_STRINGS becomes ('stop', 'length', 'abort', 'error', 'length') and vllm still imports.
  • Probe: with the remap, it returns finish_reason length, stop_reason repetition_detected. The patched page checks stop_reason for exactly this reason.
  • Lint: pre-commit passes, including markdownlint and the skills symlink sync.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated evaluation troubleshooting guidance for ns_* tasks to explain how repetition-related response statuses are handled.
    • Added steps for applying a serving-container configuration change and checking canary logs.
    • Clarified backend probe results: repetition_detected indicates support, while a null stop reason indicates the behavior was ignored.

vLLM ends a repetition_detection hit with finish_reason "repetition". The
nemo-skills client (litellm) rejects it with a pydantic literal_error and retries
the request, so a looping sample is resampled until it does not loop: the detector
inflates the score instead of ending the loop. Remap the reason to "length" in the
serving container through deployment.pre_cmd, so a hit scores as a truncated,
unanswered sample. The probe now checks stop_reason, which reads
"repetition_detected" with or without the remap.

📝 Walkthrough

The evaluation guide now describes remapping vLLM’s "repetition" finish reason for ns_* tasks and checking canary logs. Its backend probe now checks stop_reason and uses updated interpretations for repetition_detected and null.

The guide adds a serving-container pre_cmd patch and a canary-log check for literal_error. The backend probe now reports stop_reason; it treats repetition_detected as supported and null as ignored.

Nudge: the fix looks right and the canary evidence is solid, but this is a skill edit with a few lines that could be tighter or clearer, and one merge hazard.

Needs action:

  • ✂️ Compress the pre_cmd path lookup and the "(length below the cap)" aside. Inline comments on lines 45 and 50 give shorter wording.
  • Add a note that the remap must be appended to any existing deployment.pre_cmd, such as the livecodebench recipe's, and must not replace it.
  • Update the earlier sentence that says "A hit ends the request with finish_reason: "repetition"" so it points to the ns_* exception. Right now the page states two different outcomes.

No action needed:

  • The probe now checks stop_reason, which reads repetition_detected whether or not the remap is applied. The PR's probe output confirms this, and the grep guard fails loudly if the sed stops matching on a newer vLLM.
  • I couldn't independently verify vLLM's stop_reason value. I'm relying on the author's test.
  • The NEMO_EVALUATOR_TRUST_PRE_CMD=1 usage matches the existing evaluation-skill docs.
  • No tests or licensing changes, and the PR is well under the size budget.

This line can be shorter and clearer: F=$(python3 -c 'import vllm.v1.engine as m; print(m.__file__)'). Also add a note (e.g. "append to any existing pre_cmd"). Some recipes, such as livecodebench, already set deployment.pre_cmd, and an agent copying this block could overwrite theirs.

Done in 8e12648: line 45 is now F=$(python3 -c 'import vllm; print(vllm.__path__[0])')/v1/engine/__init__.py, which keeps the import vllm the canary verified instead of running the heavier vllm.v1.engine import inside the $(...) capture, and line 39 now says to append to any existing deployment.pre_cmd.

grep -q '"error", "length")' "$F" || { echo "finish_reason remap failed"; exit 1; }
```
A hit then scores as a truncated, unanswered sample, like one at `max_new_tokens`
The aside "(length below the cap)" is cryptic. Suggested wording: "A hit then scores like a max_new_tokens truncation. Confirm the canary's client logs show no literal_error." Also, the paragraph above still says a hit ends with finish_reason: "repetition". Tighten that sentence so it says "(length on ns_*, see below)" and the page doesn't give two outcomes.
Done in 8e12648: line 50 now reads "A hit then scores like a max_new_tokens truncation. Confirm the canary's client logs show no literal_error.", and the earlier sentence (line 31) now says finish_reason: "repetition" (length on ns_*, see below).
Shorten the pre_cmd path lookup, say to append to an existing
deployment.pre_cmd, and make the page state one outcome per task type.
Document the post-remap repetition classification.
For ns_*, finish_reason becomes "length", so validation cannot use that field alone to separate repetition stops from ordinary output-limit stops. The probe checks stop_reason, but the guidance does not state that nemo-skills artifacts retain stop_reason: "repetition_detected" or that validation counts it separately. Document the artifact field and classification rule, or update the validation guidance.
