What changed and why

A transformers conversion mapping is reversed on save so a quantized export keeps the
original hub checkpoint's names. That reverse must be a no-op on names already in
source form
— the invariant _idempotent_pattern already enforces for prefix rules.

A model breaks it by declaring a backwards-compatibility load rename as a reversible
WeightRenaming. NemotronH does exactly this:

register_checkpoint_conversion_mapping("nemotron_h", [
    WeightRenaming("backbone.", "model."),
    WeightRenaming("embedding.weight", "embeddings.weight"), # BC-only, but reversible
], overwrite=True)

The second rule mirrors a transformers-4 load_hook, which was load-only. Under
transformers 5 it is bidirectional, so reversing it rewrites the canonical
backbone.embeddings.weight to a legacy backbone.embedding.weight that the published
checkpoint never used. vLLM's NemotronH loader maps the substring embeddings to
embed_tokens, so the singular name reaches it unmapped and serving fails at load:

ValueError: There is no module or parameter named 'model.embedding' in NemotronHForCausalLM

The published checkpoint is plural, so the reverse was not restoring a name — it was
inventing one. This surfaced on a 0.48.0rc0 export of a 120B NemotronH checkpoint
(NVBug 6914213); 0.47 was unaffected only because it did not reverse the mapping at all.

The guard

_source_checkpoint_keys() reads the tensor names of the checkpoint the model was loaded
from, and _drop_non_idempotent_renames() drops any reverse rename that rewrites a name
the checkpoint already carries.

A rule is dropped only on positive evidence: it must rewrite at least one source key,
and every source key it rewrites must land on a name absent from the checkpoint. Rules
that match nothing, and rules whose outputs are themselves real source names, are kept —
a false positive here would delete a correct rename, so the guard refuses to act without
proof. When the source checkpoint cannot be read (a config-built model, a hub id never
materialized locally, an unrecognized layout) behavior is unchanged.

The same rules drive build_reverse_name_mapper, so exclude_modules / quantized_layers
move with the tensors and stay aligned.

Testing

Unit — tests/unit/torch/export/test_quant_aware_conversion.py: 5 new tests covering
the drop, the two keep cases, the inert path, and the index read. Whole file 63 passed.

Real checkpoint, before/after — tiny NemotronH built from the published
nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3-Super-120B-A12B-BF16 config and its own remote code, with
name_or_path pointing at that checkpoint so the guard reads its real 42,683 names. Same
tree, same venv (transformers 5.17.0), one file apart:

BEFORE (b) modelopt reverse : ['backbone.embedding.weight'] exclude_modules: backbone.embedding
AFTER (b) modelopt reverse : ['backbone.embeddings.weight'] exclude_modules: backbone.embeddings
source keys read: 42683 canonical in source: True legacy in source: False

Renaming that key in the real 119 GB failing artefact clears the reported error: weight
loading completes (Model loading took 28.72 GiB memory and 33.76 seconds).

No-regression on a model that was already correct — a separate model whose conversion
mapping carries several reverse renames, all of which do restore real source names, was
re-exported end to end from an identical tree plus this commit:

tensor-name delta vs the pre-guard export : 0
source-checkpoint names absent from export: 0
shard md5 : all shards byte-identical

No rule is dropped when every rename is sound, so the export is unchanged.

Note for maintainers

This guards ModelOpt's export path. A plain save_pretrained round-trip of that checkpoint
under transformers 5 still produces the legacy name, because HF's own
revert_weight_conversion is unguarded — the model card's WeightRenaming is worth fixing
separately at the source.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unified Hugging Face exports now preserve canonical tensor names when reversing rename rules would overwrite names already present in the source checkpoint. The same protection applies to module references in quantization configuration, helping exported models retain consistent names and load correctly.

…oint lacks

A reverse rename maps an in-memory name back to its source-checkpoint name, so it
must be a no-op on names that are already in source form -- the invariant
_idempotent_pattern already enforces for prefix rules. A model that declares a
backwards-compatibility *load* rename as a reversible WeightRenaming breaks it:
reversing the rule rewrites the canonical name to a legacy spelling the published
checkpoint never used, and a deployment loader keyed on the canonical name then
cannot find the tensor.

Read the source checkpoint's tensor names and drop any reverse rename that
rewrites a name the checkpoint already carries. A rule is dropped only on positive
evidence -- it must rewrite at least one source key, and every source key it
rewrites must land on a name absent from the checkpoint -- so renames that
legitimately restore source names, and rules that match nothing, are kept. When the
source checkpoint cannot be read (a config-built model, a hub id never materialized
locally, an unrecognized layout) the behavior is unchanged.

Walkthrough

The quant-aware export conversion reads tensor names from supported local safetensors checkpoints and filters reverse rename rules against those names. Tests cover known and unknown source keys. The changelog records the export behavior for tensors and quantization-config module references.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 69fda

The change stops export from writing legacy tensor names that the source checkpoint does not use, and falls back to the existing behavior when the checkpoint cannot be read. The only open item is a wording cleanup in the changelog. Merge risk is minimal.

Make the release note short and precise.

The filter does not skip every rule that rewrites a source name. It keeps a rule if any rewritten result is also a source name. Shorten this entry and state that condition accurately. As per coding guidelines, changelog entries should be a “Very short summary of changes.”
