Changes requested: wheel resolution fails when deep_gemm is already installed, and the launcher-managed installer needs a design justification.
Needs action:
- Fix
_resolve()invllm_deepgemm_utils.pyto resolve independently of installed packages; add a real-pip regression with an existingdeep_gemminstallation. - Explain in the PR body why launcher-managed installation and caching are preferred over documented
pip install --targetplusPYTHONPATH, or a dedicated serving virtual environment.
No action needed:
- New license headers match
LICENSE_HEADER. - Existing test-fixture edits isolate the new environment variables and imports without reducing coverage.

pip install --dry-run still considers packages already installed in this interpreter. If an installed deep_gemm satisfies the requirement (particularly the unpinned deep_gemm requirement), pip reports "install": [], so this tuple unpacking raises instead of selecting a wheel from the requested index. It can also keep an older installed version rather than selecting the newest index version. Resolve with --ignore-installed (or equivalent isolation) and add a real-pip regression with an already-installed package; the current real-pip fixture only controls pip configuration, not installed distributions.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed and fixed in 9dc864e: all pip calls now pass --ignore-installed, so an installed deep_gemm neither satisfies nor pins the selection. Reproduced first against a real index: with a deep_gemm on PYTHONPATH, the dry run reported "install": [], pinned or not. The new real-pip test test_real_pip_ignores_an_installed_deep_gemm installs an older deep_gemm on PYTHONPATH; it fails on the previous revision with the ValueError and passes now.

This introduces a launcher-managed package resolver, installer and cache. I found no existing equivalent installer in the repository. Please explain the design choice in the PR body against the simpler alternatives: documenting pip install --target <folder> plus PYTHONPATH, or using a dedicated serving virtual environment. The no-environment-modification goal explains avoiding a normal in-place install, but not why installation/cache lifecycle should live in the launcher.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Added a "Why the launcher installs the wheel" section to the PR body. In short: pip install --target into an existing folder keeps the old version while reporting success, a wheel for the wrong torch makes vLLM silently fall back to its vendored DeepGEMM, and a venv per DeepGEMM build duplicates the whole vLLM/torch environment. pip still does the selection, download and install; the launcher only adds the per-version folder with its lock, the import check and PYTHONPATH.

Changes requested: installed-package resolution and design justification are resolved, but cache identity still permits serving a different requested build.
Needs action:
- Fix source collisions in
vllm_deepgemm_utils.pycache keys; add a regression using different wheels with the same version (inline comment). - Validate staged installations before publishing; test that a failed import leaves no reusable cache entry and a corrected wheel can be retried.
- Bound both pip subprocess calls, handle timeouts, and document their necessity and safety as required by
SECURITY.md; request setup-codeowner review. - Confirm this review with a human: prior bot comments contain embedded agent directives, ignored as untrusted input.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: installed-package resolution now uses
--ignore-installedwith a real-pip regression; the PR body justifies launcher installation against manual target installs and virtual environments. - New headers match
LICENSE_HEADER; existing fixture additions preserve coverage. Timeout guidance is minor; cache collisions and publishing invalid installations are correctness concerns.

Bot comment.
The earlier source-identity concern remains unresolved: _folder_name(installed) includes only version, interpreter and architecture. Install a wheel from source A, then request a different wheel from source B with the same version: the second launch skips installation and the import check accepts A, while the log claims B. This is especially relevant to switching local custom builds. Include source/artifact identity in the cache key (normalize local paths appropriately) and add a regression showing distinct same-version sources install separately while repeated requests reuse their own entry.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in b656d05: the cache folder is now <version>-<python>-<arch>-<source>, where the source is the sha256 of a local wheel's content (a rebuild that keeps its version installs again) or of the index or wheel URL (trailing / ignored). test_sources_of_a_version_install_separately installs a rebuilt wheel and two indexes with the same version into four folders and checks that each source reuses its own; it fails on the previous revision.

Bot comment.
The staged-validation concern remains unresolved. This rename publishes the installation before _check_import runs in install_deepgemm. If the wheel does not import, the launch fails but leaves a published cache folder; subsequent launches skip pip and fail again, even after the supplied wheel is corrected. Validate the staged package before publishing, remove staging on failure, and test failure followed by a successful retry using the same cache identity. Continue validating cache hits against the current environment.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in b656d05: _pip_install runs the import check in the staging folder and publishes it only after the check passes; a failed check removes the staging folder. Cache hits are still checked on each launch, since the environment can change. test_a_build_that_does_not_import_is_not_cached checks that a failing import leaves no cache folder and that a retry installs again; it fails on the previous revision.

Bot comment.
Minor outstanding resilience/convention concern: neither this pip dry run nor the install subprocess has an overall timeout. pip's network retry/socket limits do not bound the entire process, and the install runs while holding the shared cache lock. Add a suitable finite timeout and translate TimeoutExpired into an actionable error, with regression coverage for staging cleanup/lock release. SECURITY.md also requires inline necessity/safety explanations for required subprocess use and setup-codeowner review; explain that pip is invoked via an argument list without a shell and that wheel sources must be trusted.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in b656d05: both pip runs go through _run_pip with a 1800 s timeout (an index read and a wheel download of tens of MB) and turn TimeoutExpired into a RuntimeError; the staging folder is removed and the cache lock released (test_pip_timeouts_release_the_cache). Inline comments at the pip and import-check subprocess calls explain why they are needed and safe (argument lists without a shell, wheels only from the source the user passes), and the PR body has a "Subprocess use" section.

Include torch and CUDA in the DeepGEMM cache identity.
When torch or CUDA changes, an existing folder with the same DeepGEMM version, Python tag, and machine is reused. The import check then rejects the incompatible wheel, but the launcher does not reinstall the compatible artifact selected from the index. The documented workaround is to delete the cache entry and launch again.

vllm_serve_fakequant.py takes --deepgemm-url / DEEPGEMM_URL: a PEP 503 index of prebuilt DeepGEMM wheels or a single wheel. From an index, pip selects the newest version with a wheel for this Python and CPU, or the version pinned by --deepgemm-version / DEEPGEMM_VERSION, ignoring any installed deep_gemm; nothing is built. The launcher installs the wheel with pip install --target into a cache folder per version and source (a local wheel by its content), under a lock and with a timeout, checks that import deep_gemm loads it with the installed torch before publishing it (vLLM would silently fall back to its own copy), and puts the folder first on PYTHONPATH, so vLLM and its workers import it instead of vLLM's own DeepGEMM, e.g. a DeepGEMM fork with indexer scorer numerics options. The folder name includes the DeepGEMM version, the Python tag, the machine, and the source. It does not include torch or CUDA. This matters for wheel URLs and for unpinned index selections. If that's the case we do not need the install_deepgemm inside our python script right?
Serving a DeepGEMM source tree, such as a local branch, no longer builds a wheel to pass through DEEPGEMM_URL: the README and the launcher's error hint now say to pip install the source into the serving environment, which vLLM then uses directly. Adds
--deepgemm-url/DEEPGEMM_URLand--deepgemm-version/DEEPGEMM_VERSIONtoexamples/vllm_serve/vllm_serve_fakequant.py, to serve with a prebuilt DeepGEMM wheel, such as a DeepGEMM fork's, without building anything and without changing the Python environment.vLLM imports an installed
deep_gemmbefore its vendoredvllm.third_party.deep_gemm. Before vLLM starts its workers, the launcher:pip install --dry-run --report -; or one wheel file or URL. Only wheels are installed (--only-binary :all:,--no-deps), and an already installeddeep_gemmis ignored (--ignore-installed);pip install --targetinto a cache folder per version and source (<cache>/wheels/<version>-<python>-<arch>-<source>): a local wheel counts by its content, so a rebuilt wheel with the same version is installed again, and different indexes or wheels never share a folder. The install is staged, checked (next item) and only then published by a rename, under a file lock, so concurrent launches sharing the cache are safe; each pip run has a timeout. A cached install is reused; an exact pin (with its+local label) then needs no index;import deep_gemmloads the install with the installed torch: before a new install is published, so the cache never holds one that does not import, and again on each launch that reuses it. vLLM falls back to its vendored copy without an error when the import fails, so a wheel for another torch would otherwise silently not be used;PYTHONPATH, which vLLM's workers inherit.pip does not know about torch: if an index has builds for several torch versions, pin one with
--deepgemm-version; the import check catches a mismatch. The cache isMODELOPT_DEEPGEMM_CACHE_DIR, else$VLLM_CACHE_ROOT/modelopt/deepgemm, else~/.cache/modelopt/deepgemm.Only DeepGEMM is supported. A TODO notes that the module can be made generic when another kernel package needs it; that only helps packages that vLLM imports by name (vLLM builds, for example, FlashMLA into its own wheel).

subprocess.runwith argument lists, never a shell, in two places, each with an inline comment and a timeout:python -m pip install ..., for the dry run and the install: pip has no supported Python API. pip installs only wheels (--only-binary :all:,--no-deps), and only from the package index or wheel that the user passes in--deepgemm-url/DEEPGEMM_URL, which the user must trust like any package source. Nothing is fetched when the option is not set.python -c "import deep_gemm; print(deep_gemm.__file__)": a fresh interpreter that imports the install as vLLM's workers will, with a fixed script.Usage
The launcher prints the installed version and folder:
Testing
tests/examples/vllm_serve/test_vllm_deepgemm_utils.py(new) andtests/examples/vllm_serve/test_fakequant_example.py: 60 passed (vLLM 0.30.0 environment). The new tests stub pip and the import check for the commands and their timeouts, the per-version cache, pins, wheel paths and URLs, input checks, pip errors, the lock (including a launch that waits for another one), stale staging folders, file permissions, the cache location and the flag/env precedence. Regression tests cover a rebuilt wheel and another index with the same version (each gets and reuses its own folder), an install that does not import (not cached; a retry installs again), and pip runs that time out (no staging folder left, lock released); the first two fail on the previous revision of this PR. Four tests run the real pip against a localfile://index of tiny wheels or a wheel file and import the result in a fresh interpreter, one of them with an olderdeep_gemmalready installed onPYTHONPATH. The launcher test checks that the install runs before vLLM starts and that vLLM does not get the DeepGEMM flags.deep_gemminstalled onPYTHONPATH.vllm_serve_fakequant.pywithDEEPGEMM_URLset to that index; the workers used the installed fork. This run used an earlier revision of this launcher, which selected the version itself instead of asking pip; the pip-based revision was checked with the installs above.pre-commiton the changed files: clean. Before your PR is "Ready for review"
CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A (runs pip in a subprocess; needs pip 22.2 or newer for--dry-run --report)Additional Information
The installed folder is put on
PYTHONPATHof the launcher's environment. Ray workers that vLLM does not start from it, such as those of an already running Ray cluster, need the folder (printed at launch) on theirPYTHONPATH, on a filesystem that all nodes share.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
