len(recipe.auto_quantize.module_search_spaces) == 2checks only the count. It does not check which formats or patterns each space holds.len(fixed_mtp_entries) == 4filters on"mtp.layers.1"only. Entries for other MTP layers are not checked. If the policy must cover every MTP layer, the test does not protect that. The PR also adds 4.8-bit and 5.0-bit recipes. If those recipes ship, a parametrized test over all three target values is cheap and protects against drift.

Changes requested: the search patterns miss standalone Nemotron-H decoder modules, making the advertised recipe infeasible for that supported layout.
Needs action:
- Fix decoder patterns in
nvfp4_mse_fp8_search.yamlto cover unwrappedmodel.layersandbackbone.layerswithout including MTP; see inline comment. - Add runtime recipe tests for standalone and wrapped Nemotron-H, with and without MTP, verifying searched groups, fixed expert policy, KV quantization, and 4.5-bit candidate costs.
- Confirm the SPDX-only headers in the three new YAML files are intentional with human licensing sign-off, or use the complete canonical
LICENSE_HEADER.
No action needed:
- The fixed-baseline recipe reuses existing AutoQuantize composition rather than introducing a second system.
- The PR body correctly distinguishes the search budget from total checkpoint storage.

Bot comment.
All three decoder patterns require a language_model prefix. Standalone NemotronHForCausalLM has decoder modules under model.layers (older remote-code models use backbone.layers), so none of its decoder projections enter the search. With this fixed baseline, unmatched decoder modules stay BF16; _verify_resolved_constraint then rejects the 4.9-bit budget for a normal Nemotron-H model even if lm_head is quantizable. The MTP loader explicitly supports both standalone and wrapped checkpoints, and the usage does not restrict this recipe to Omni. Add unwrapped decoder patterns while keeping MTP outside the search, and test actual resolved runtime groups for both layouts.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 1930f16. Both standalone decoder namespaces now match the final recipe's search space. Runtime tests verify NVFP4/FP8/BF16 choices for decoder projections and lm_head, feasible 4.9-bit constraints, and fixed/excluded MTP groups across standalone and wrapped layouts.

Bot comment.
This test verifies YAML structure but cannot detect whether the patterns match real Nemotron-H modules. In particular, "mtp" not in pattern does not establish exclusion semantics. Please add execution/resolved-group coverage using the tiny native/wrapped Nemotron-H fixture pattern from tests/unit/torch/models/test_nemotron_h_mtp.py, including no-MTP cases, and assert decoder/lm_head search choices, fixed routed/shared expert settings, KV settings, and candidate compression costs.

Addressed in 1930f16 with a parameterized native-module test in tests/unit/recipe/test_nemotron_h_recipe.py: standalone/wrapped x model/backbone x MTP/no-MTP. It inspects actual resolved groups, routed/shared expert weight and activation quantizers, BF16 non-expert MTP modules, KV casting, cost exclusions, and 4.5/8/16-bit candidate costs. All eight cases and the focused 530-test CPU suite pass; this does not claim GPU numerical calibration coverage.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Updated in db8765b for the routed-experts-only MTP policy: routed experts remain NVFP4 W4A4, shared experts and other MTP modules remain BF16, and MTP KV stays disabled before and after base-model FP8 KV casting. The existing eight native-module cases cover these settings; all 530 focused CPU tests pass. The PR description now reflects this policy and the CPU-only validation scope.
|
Addressed the latest review in 1930f16: standalone decoder patterns, actual runtime-group coverage across eight model-layout/MTP combinations, and full canonical Apache headers for the final YAML and its test. FP8 KV casting is now explicit for both the base model and MTP. The PR is limited to one final recipe plus its regression test; only the requested 4.9-bit variant is included. Independent CPU validation: 530 tests passed, changed-file hooks and the separately run recipe validator passed. GPU calibration/accuracy and fresh CI success are not claimed. The PR description now reflects this scope and validation. |

Nudge: the prior correctness concerns are resolved, but embedded agent directives in earlier bot comments require human review before merge.
Needs action:
- Confirm human review of this scoped recipe and regression test; earlier bot comments contain agent-directed prompts, which I ignored as untrusted input.
- Confirm fresh CI passes on the current head, including the previously timed-out vLLM job.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: standalone decoder matching, runtime coverage across eight layouts, fixed-scale KV casting, and canonical headers matching
LICENSE_HEADER. - The obsolete example adapter and import-dependent test are outside this rebased diff; the library checkpoint helper supports indexed and unsharded safetensors.
- Existing AutoQuantize composition is reused; the tests verify fixed MTP expert settings, exclusions, and 4.5/8/16-bit choices without claiming GPU numerical validation.

- The current policy deliberately disables MTP KV before and after the post-search step; tests preserve routed-expert NVFP4 while shared experts remain BF16.
- Existing AutoQuantize composition is reused. CPU configuration tests do not claim GPU calibration or accuracy validation.

hi @meenchen - the shipped recipe has kv scales as fp8 calibrated scales for MTP as we only dropped the scales in backbone- https://huggingface.co/nvidia/Nemotron-Super-3.5-GA-FINAL-row105-QAD-PreStitched-BoostedMTP/blob/main/model.safetensors.index.json

Fixed in 696117b8f. MTP K/V now uses data-calibrated FP8 in the fixed-baseline recipe. The post-search MTP override preserves the collected scales with use_constant_amax: false, while base-model KV remains FP8 cast with amax 448 and no stored KV scales. The native regression collects real MTP KV statistics and checks retained amax and exact exported k_proj.k_scale / v_proj.v_scale = amax / 448. No additional post-search KV calibration pass is needed.

Updated in 696117b8f: MTP shared-expert up_proj / down_proj now joins routed experts in the fixed NVFP4 W4A4 MSE baseline. Runtime regressions verify both shared projections use static block-16 NVFP4 weights and NVFP4 activations, remain fixed, and are excluded from the search cost. Routers/gates and other MTP modules remain BF16. This implements the requested candidate policy; speculative acceptance quality has not yet been measured.

why do we need effective bits here?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
effective_bits is AutoQuant cost metadata, not the numerical precision setting. NVFP4 stores 4-bit values plus one 8-bit scale per 16 weights, giving 4.5 bits/weight. The static preset does not set this metadata, so the override avoids the 4.0-bit fallback. This anchor is also reused by decoder/lm_head search candidates; fixed MTP is excluded from the budget.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I guess what I was trying to confirm is we don't need the effective_bits in the quantize section of the config, but need in the auto_quantize.
I missed the part that it is defining the anchor for the AutoQuant search space.

if line 54-58 enable MTP quantization, why do we need the kv_cache again? and we need the constant_amax= True, no scales for the backbone KV$ right? how are we specifying that?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Line 54-58 is for MTP KV config. This part is for the backbone, i.e., the search sapce for AutoQuant.kv_fp8_cast sets constant_amax= True already, so it is covered

What does this PR do?
Type of change: New feature
Adds one checkpoint-specific AutoQuantize recipe for
nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Super-VL-120B-A12B-BF16, following the layout merged in #2819. The recipe lives atmodels/nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Super-VL-120B-A12B-BF16/auto_quantize/nvfp4_mse_fp8_mtp_fixed_at_4p9bits, alongside the checkpoint's PTQ recipe, rather than advertising these tuning choices as defaults for all Nemotron-H models. The previous architecture-tier path was only in this unmerged PR and is not retained as an alias.Gradient-based sensitivity scoring searches decoder modules and
lm_headover weight-MSE NVFP4, FP8, and BF16 at a 4.9-effective-bit search budget. MTP routed/shared experts stay fixed at MSE-calibrated NVFP4 W4A4; other MTP modules and vision/audio remain BF16. MTP KV uses calibrated FP8 scales collected during fixed-baseline calibration and preserved after search. Backbone KV uses fixed-range FP8 casting (use_constant_amax, amax 448), without stored KV scales. The move changes no imports, quantization rules, search settings, or cost exclusions. Static NVFP4 is locally costed at 4.5 bits per weight, including one FP8 scale per 16 weights. Fixed MTP and configured non-language modules are excluded from the search cost, so the target is not an all-parameter checkpoint-size guarantee. This generates a mixed-precision search candidate; it does not reproduce the published QAD-refined NVFP4 weights.
Usage
Review the checkpoint's modeling code before adding
--trust_remote_codeif required. The example AutoQuantize CLI currently rejects--calib_with_images; the sibling PTQ recipe's image-calibration invocation does not apply to this CLI path.Testing
Rebased onto
f0daaa241, the merge of #2819. Tested on CPU with Python 3.12.13, PyTorch 2.13.0, Transformers 5.14.0, and pytest 9.1.1:Results: 605 passed in 15.97 seconds, plus 6 passed in 7.91 seconds. This includes all eight moved AutoQuantize cases, the eleven upstream checkpoint-specific PTQ cases, and the MTP suite. AutoQuantize regressions cover resolved search/fixed groups, NVFP4 costs, routed/shared-expert formats, calibrated MTP KV collection and exported scales, and backbone KV casting without scales.
A semantic comparison against the previously published recipe confirms that every non-metadata YAML field is unchanged. The new checkpoint path loads as
ModelOptAutoQuantizeRecipeusing its schema comment, without deprecatedmetadata.recipe_type. Changed-file pre-commit checks passed; the environment-creating recipe hook was skipped and its actualtools/precommit/check_modelopt_recipes.pyvalidator passed separately in the dependency-equipped environment. Staged credential audit and diff checks passed. No production-model GPU E2E, accuracy, or speculative-acceptance test was rerun for this path/metadata move. CPU KV tests disable NVFP4 weight/input quantizers. The GPU PTQ E2E results in #2819 are not validation of this AutoQuantize recipe; fresh CI remains required.

Followed the contributor guidelines and security guidance. Commits are signed and include DCO sign-offs.
Additional Information
Uses the existing AutoQuantize fixed-baseline composition and the MTP loading/calibration/export support merged in #2581. No loader, MTP implementation, image-calibration, or expert-parallel changes are included. Naming and placement follow #2819, but the recipe performs a new sensitivity-driven assignment rather than the sibling PTQ recipe's fixed assignment.
