Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a standalone camera-streaming example for sending HEVC or raw NV12 video from supported Jetson devices to a Linux NVIDIA GPU host.
    • Added receiver and CUDA IPC consumer setup, launch, stream-selection, and latency-reporting options. CUDA IPC is for compatible access to the same physical GPU.
    • Added optional deployment, service restoration, and rollback tools, plus example camera configurations and calibration assets.
  • Documentation
    • Added build, configuration, testing, and deployment guides. AVS1/TCP is intended for trusted local networks and does not provide authentication or encryption.
  • Changes
    • Replaced the previous camera-profile examples with the standalone sender and receiver configuration approach.

Walkthrough

The example is reorganized as a standalone Argus-to-AVS1/TCP-to-NVDEC pipeline with a separate same-host CUDA IPC consumer. The change adds setup, configuration, remap-generation, and deployment tools. It also changes AVS1 validation, receiver processing, decoder behavior, and the CUDA IPC protocol and removes earlier camera profiles and guard-file coordination.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b3452

This change reworks the camera streamer's sender, receiver, and deployment tooling. It also removes several safeguards:

  • Bundle send ordering.
  • Payload validation.
  • Receiver backlog limits.
  • Decoder concurrency protection.
  • IPC socket permissions.
  • Safe temporary-file handling during privileged deployment.

Under load, after a reset, or on shared boards, these gaps can cause out-of-order or corrupted frames, unbounded memory growth, decoder misuse, or local tampering with installed service files. Resolve them before merging.

Critical · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Create the remote temporary file atomically before the privileged install.

If another board user pre-creates this predictable /tmp path, that user can change the source file before sudo install reads it. The affected destinations include camera-argus-sender.service, which runs privileged ExecStartPre commands. Use a remote mktemp file with restricted permissions, and remove it on every exit path.

Tools
ast-grep (0.50.0)

[warning] 59-59: Building a temp file path in a world-writable directory from the PID ($$) or `` is predictable and racy: an attacker can pre-create or guess the name and win a symlink/race attack. Use mktemp (e.g. `f=$(mktemp)` or `f=$(mktemp /tmp/myapp.XXXXXX)`) so the kernel atomically creates a unique, unpredictable file.
Context: "/tmp/camera_avs1_$$_$(basename "$destination")"

Restore ordered payload-range validation.

If two sample descriptors reference the same payload range, the parser copies the first sample’s bytes into both samples. The final size check still passes when the ranges have equal lengths, even though the second sample’s wire bytes are unused. Require each offset to equal the end of the preceding payload range before accepting the record. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep bundle collection and enqueue order synchronized.

If one submission collects bundle 1 and pauses before sendReady, another submission can collect and enqueue bundle 2 first. m_mutex protects m_nextSendSequence, but it no longer protects packet publication order. Keep a shared send lock across ready-bundle collection and enqueueing, without holding m_mutex during the packet-sink call. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep ready-bundle collection and enqueueing in the submission path synchronized
with a shared send lock, so bundles are published in collection order; release

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Allow even rounding for inferred strict dimensions.

If a 1920×1080 source specifies width: 222 and leaves height unspecified, evenRounded selects height 124. The strict aspect check then rejects the dimensions solely because of that rounding. Capture initialization fails even though the caller asked the resolver to infer a valid NV12 height. Preserve the inferred-dimension exception while retaining strict checks for explicitly specified dimensions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Unbounded per-stream work queue. Restore a backlog limit.

_StreamRuntime had a bounded semaphore that limited in-flight work to the ring depth. That semaphore is removed. runtime.executor is a ThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=1), so its queue has no limit.

_produce_loop keeps reading bundles from TCP. If decode or copy is slower than the sender rate, each task queues. Each task holds a full ReceivedRecord, which can be up to max_record_bytes (256 MiB by default). Memory and end-to-end latency grow without limit. This can happen on a GPU stall or a clock drop.

Bound the in-flight count per runtime. Drop the new stream task when the limit is reached. Release the slot in a done callback.

Sample futures can outlive the stream task. This causes concurrent use of one decoder.

all(...) stops at the first False result. An exception from future.result() also stops it. In both cases the other eye's future is not awaited. The old code called wait(futures) first.

Take a stereo stream where the left decode returns False, for example while NVDEC waits for a keyframe after a reset. _process_stream returns while the right eye still runs in _sample_pool. The single-worker stream executor then starts the next bundle. It submits a new right-eye task for the same runtime.decoders[1], output_buffers slot, and raw_buffers[1]. sample_pool has one worker per eye, so both tasks can run at once.

NvVideoDecoder also lost its decoder_mutex in this PR. The native NvDecoder is not safe for concurrent Decode calls. reset_decoders, which is queued on the same executor, can also run while the stray future still uses the decoder.

Wait for every sample future before you evaluate the results. Re-add wait to the import on Line 26: from concurrent.futures import Future, ThreadPoolExecutor, wait.

A failed copy leaks the locked frame and the pushed CUDA context.

check_rt throws on a failed cudaMemcpy2DAsync. The code between GetLockedFrame() and UnlockFrame() is no longer wrapped in a catch-and-cleanup block. An exception here skips UnlockFrame(&nv12) and cuCtxPopCurrent.

The surface stays locked in NVDEC's pool. The CUDA context stays pushed on the worker thread. Repeated failures exhaust the frame pool and the decoder stalls.

The same applies to the launch_nv12_to_rgba path in decode_one. Restore a scope guard or a try/catch(...) that synchronizes, unlocks the frame, and pops the context before it rethrows.

The chmod(0o600) on the IPC socket is removed. Restore it.

After srv.bind, the socket file now gets the process umask. The default socket path is /tmp/camera_receiver_avs1_cuda_ipc.sock. With a group-writable or world-writable umask (for example 002 or 000), another local user can connect. That user receives the hello and subscribe messages, and these include CUDA IPC memory handles and frame metadata for the camera streams.

Restore owner-only permissions. Apply them before listen.

Discussion: keep a bounded receiver backlog for latency under load

I agree with simplifying this path. One performance concern is that direct submission to the single-worker ThreadPoolExecutor removes the previous bound on pending work. If decoding stalls or runs slower than capture, TCP reception can continue retaining bundles while displayed frames become progressively older.

A hardware-free probe of this revision's actual _dispatch_bundle method accepted 100 bundles with 99 waiting behind a blocked worker. This confirms the missing bound, rather than demonstrating a hardware slowdown.

Would it make sense to retain a small backlog limit with an explicit recovery policy? CodeRabbit also noted this, but arbitrarily dropping encoded HEVC tasks can discard reference pictures; any dropping strategy needs keyframe-aware recovery. The intent is bounded latency without restoring unnecessary complexity. Leaving the policy choice to you.

Discussion: preserve encoded bundle ordering across collection and enqueue

Removing m_sendMutex allows a submission to collect bundle N under m_mutex, release that lock, and pause before sendReady. Another submission can then collect and enqueue N+1 first. The TCP sender preserves enqueue order, so it cannot repair this inversion; dependent HEVC pictures can arrive at the decoder in the wrong order.

This is the same ordering concern already raised by CodeRabbit, and it remains present in this revision. Could we retain a narrow ordering guarantee across collection and enqueue, either with the small ordering lock or a single ordered publishing queue? This does not require changing the restored sender architecture. This finding is based on the concurrent code paths, not an observed hardware failure; leaving the implementation decision to you.

Discussion: finish both eye tasks before returning from a failed stereo bundle

all(future.result() for future in futures) short-circuits when the first result is false, and also exits immediately on an exception. The other eye may still be decoding when this stream worker accepts the next bundle or runs a decoder reset. With the native decoder mutex also removed, those operations can overlap on decoder state and output buffers.

A hardware-free probe invoking this revision's actual _process_stream confirmed that it returns while the second-eye task remains active after the first eye returns false.

Could we wait for all submitted eye tasks to finish before propagating a failure or deciding whether to publish? Successful stereo frames already need both results, so this should primarily affect failure handling rather than steady-state latency. Leaving the choice to you; it need not involve restoring the other removed guards.

Discussion: retain safe slot reuse without blocking the producer

With slot guards removed, the receiver cycles through the GPU ring independently of consumers reading those slots. slot_generation travels in the notification, but there is no shared check/ownership handshake establishing that the memory still contains that generation or preventing overwrite during a GPU read. A delayed consumer can read newer or partially overwritten pixels under older metadata.

This matters for both image stability and trustworthy latency measurements. A deeper ring reduces the likelihood but does not establish safe ownership.

Would a lightweight reader ownership/acknowledgment mechanism, with the producer skipping busy slots rather than waiting, fit the low-latency goal? I am not proposing that we necessarily restore the filesystem-lock implementation. This is a source-level lifetime concern, not a reproduced hardware corruption report; leaving the design decision to you.

I just did the agent assisted review of this, using the same agent I used to do the original argus bridge camera_streamer with, and conscious of your listed goals. It brought up 4 issues as discussion topics on the thread. Feel free to assess these and consider the changes. However if you want to keep the code as pure as possible and similar to the proven gr00t code I have also approved the review. Thank you!
