fix(assistant): read v2 conversations without false expired-session errors - #223
The shared Assistant response reader scanned the entire body for HTML before decoding JSON. Valid conversation JSON containing an HTML example therefore produced an invalid/expired-session error. It also discarded the distinction between conversation-specific rejection and an authentication failure.
Changes
Parse successful JSON before inspecting HTML; retain real HTTP status for errors, redact the supplied session token and bound diagnostic text.
Use current v2 conversation-init and branch-turn endpoints for reads, exports and follow-up initialization. Keep branch selection, chronological pagination, model/usage metadata, UTC timestamps and numbered citations. Reject non-advancing pagination.
Add regressions covering HTML inside JSON, HTML/schema/status failures, redaction, v2 metadata and repeated pages; update integration fixtures and docs.
npm pack --dry-run: passed using a writable temporary cache.
Documentation production build and hosted CI passed. CodeRabbit and Codex reviewed head 67ab451 with no outstanding findings; all three CodeRabbit findings are fixed. Merge remains pending GitHub's verified-signature requirement.
The reporter's two private conversations were not accessed, so account-specific acceptance is not claimed.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Assistant conversation reads and exports now include the selected branch’s full history, including older turns, citations, and usage details.
Conversation replies containing valid JSON and HTML examples are no longer mistaken for expired sessions.
Failed conversation requests retain their HTTP status and provide concise error details with session credentials redacted.
Error messages now distinguish configuration issues, malformed responses, retryable server errors, and recognized signed-out pages.

Walkthrough
Assistant conversation reads and exports now use v2 conversation and turn endpoints. The changes add turn pagination and conversion to the existing message representation. Assistant JSON response handling preserves HTTP status and bounds and redacts diagnostic details.
Assistant JSON requests pass the session token to response handling. Valid JSON is parsed before HTML detection. Error details redact the token, collapse whitespace, and are capped at 500 characters. HTTP status determines error classification.
V2 conversation and turn retrieval src/api.rs, tests/integration-cli.rs, docs/content/docs/commands/assistant.mdx, CHANGELOG.md
Conversation reads use v2 initialization and branch-turn endpoints. Pagination checks cursor progress and filters duplicate turns. Fixtures and documentation describe the updated read behavior.
V2 turn conversion src/api.rs
Turn conversion normalizes timestamps, accepts model as an alias, and maps known reference markers, including range markers, to citation indices.
No demonstrated issue remains that should block merging after normal checks.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(assistant): read v2 conversations without false expired-session errors" matches the main change. The changeset moves Assistant reads, exports, and follow-up initialization to v2 endpoints. It also parses valid JSON before HTML inspection, so JSON containing HTML no longer yields a false expired-session error. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections. It has a Summary with what changed and why, a Verification section that reports cargo test, clippy, and fmt results, a Docs note that the documentation build passed and fixtures and docs were updated, and an AI assistance disclosure. Two template items are not explicitly ticked: the Docs checklist (README and CHANGELOG) and the Auth / Secrets checklist (no tokens committed, live verification documented without credentials). The description does state that no private conversations, credentials, or model calls were used, which partly covers the Auth / Secrets item. The template's checkbox format is not used, and the Verification items are reported as results rather than as checked boxes. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #221 is open and has coding requirements. The reviewed changes use /api/v2/conversations/{id}/init and /api/v2/branches/{id}/turns for reads, exports, and follow-up initialization. The code preserves selected branches, prepends older pages, normalizes timestamps, maps model and reference metadata, and rejects repeated or non-advancing pagination. The shared response reader parses successful JSON before HTML detection, so HTML in conversation content remains valid data. Non-success responses retain the HTTP status and bounded, session-token-redacted body text. HTTP 401 remains an authentication error without asserting token expiry. Other client errors, including conversation-specific rejection and the existing not-found response, remain distinct from authentication errors. Integration fixtures and regression coverage exercise the v2 response shape and JSON-with-HTML behavior. The private affected conversations were not accessed, so account-specific acceptance is not independently verified.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #221. src/api.rs implements v2 conversation reads, status-aware error classification, diagnostic redaction, metadata conversion, and pagination safeguards. Integration fixture updates and regression tests support those behaviors. The documentation and changelog updates describe the same Assistant read and error changes. No unrelated product area or unrelated behavior appears in the reviewed changes.

Fixes #221.
Problem
The shared Assistant response reader scanned the entire body for HTML before decoding JSON. Valid conversation JSON containing an HTML example therefore produced an invalid/expired-session error. It also discarded the distinction between conversation-specific rejection and an authentication failure.
Changes
The public Kagi client currently documents these wire shapes in https://assistant.kagi.com/_app/immutable/chunks/ckaJYLAo.js and calls the v2 endpoints in https://assistant.kagi.com/_app/immutable/chunks/wDFc56AE.js. No private conversations, credentials or model calls were used.
