is there a free copy tool that verifies file integrity?
Windows copy reports success even when bits rot on a bad cable, which is how backups silently diverge. verified-copy hashes each file at both ends and marks the job verified, skipped or corrupt before you delete the source. It is a 100 MB portable exe, MIT, offline, with no account and no telemetry.
