Part 1 of 2 for the C3 task of #631 (store and transaction half; the attach wiring is the stacked PR on top). Refs #631.

Scope

  • CompleteTargetMetStepTx: records a step whose cumulative target is already held as a completed no-op row (or completes the pre-created empty root row in place by compare-and-set) and advances the ramp in the caller's transaction. It re-locks and re-reads the plan after any baseline write in the same transaction, so the updated_at bump from the baseline write cannot trip the optimistic lock in UpdatePurchasePlanTx.
  • The advance gate requireRampStepBought is unchanged: only completed rows count as bought, so a failed zero-buy fan-out still cannot advance. The no-op row carries pre_approval_skip_reason = ramp-target-met and a note with target, committed and the number of failed rows of unknown outcome that were counted as committed.
  • UpdatePurchasePlan clears ramp_baseline after the update when an edit changes the enabled services (provider, service, term, payment) or the ramp shape (type, percent, steps, interval). Coverage, name and position edits keep it. Clearing after the update, not before, avoids the same optimistic-lock conflict.
  • planstep.Result gains Target and Committed totals for the note.
  • Interface, mock and the two stub stores get the new method.

Not touched: Savings Plans (C5), the cap logic, requireRampStepBought.

Evidence

Throwaway local PostgreSQL 17 cluster, real store (no cloud, no fixtures for the store itself):

  • go build ./..., go vet ./..., unit tests for config, planstep, purchase, server, analytics: pass.
  • go test -tags integration ./internal/config ./internal/purchase: pass.
  • New integration tests: no-op completion and advance with a baseline write in the same transaction; failed zero-buy step still refused; a root row no longer pending is not completed; baseline kept on rename/coverage edit and cleared on ramp-shape and service-identity edits.
  • Mutation probes (10 total across both PRs, one run): the baseline-clear removal is killed; the other store probes are listed in the stacked PR.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • When every service in a plan’s ramp has met its cumulative target, the completed step is recorded and the ramp advances.
  • Bug Fixes
    • The saved ramp baseline is cleared when service details or the ramp schedule change, while plan renames and coverage changes preserve it.

…stale baseline

Store half of platform#631 C3.

- CompleteTargetMetStepTx records the completed no-op row (or completes the
pre-created empty root in place by compare-and-set) and advances the ramp in
the caller transaction, re-reading the plan after any baseline write so the
updated_at bump cannot trip the optimistic lock. The advance gate is
unchanged: only completed rows count as bought, so a failed zero-buy fan-out
still cannot advance. The row carries pre_approval_skip_reason=ramp-target-met
and a note with target, committed and the count of failed rows of unknown
  outcome counted as committed.
- UpdatePurchasePlan clears ramp_baseline after the update when an edit changes
the enabled services (provider, service, term, payment) or the ramp shape,
so the next step fails loud instead of sizing against a stale baseline.
- planstep.Result carries Target and Committed totals for the no-op note.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bafa5

Two bounded store defects remain: a mismatched root ID can complete the wrong execution, and an unusual but valid service edit can leave an outdated baseline. Neither establishes an immediate purchase-sizing failure, but both should be corrected before the store operation is wired into use.

Compare enabled services without delimiter serialization.

rampBaselineStale can treat a service edit as unchanged. For example, one enabled AWS service with Service: "ec2|1|no-upfront,aws|foo", Term: 1, and Payment: "no-upfront" produces the same string as two enabled AWS services named ec2 and foo with the same term and payment. The helper therefore returns false, so UpdatePurchasePlan leaves the old ramp_baseline persisted after the enabled-service configuration changed.

Use typed records for the comparison.

The current attach resolver passes no stored baseline to planstep.Resolve, so this leaves stale persisted state without establishing an immediate production sizing failure.

Scope the root-row compare-and-set to planID and stepNumber.

The UPDATE matches only on execution_id. A caller can pass a rootID that belongs to another plan or another step. The update then marks that foreign pending row as completed with the ramp-target-met marker. advanceRampStep then calls requireRampStepBought for planID and stepNumber. If that check passes because of other rows, the transaction commits and the foreign row stays wrongly completed. If the check fails, the transaction rolls back only when the caller propagates the error. Add both predicates so the CAS reports ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus for a mismatched root.

Gate finding (reproduced, money-path stall): CompleteTargetMetStepTx errors on any plan holding a legacy failed empty row

internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_target_met.go:41-43 (head 089a16f, reached from #867 plan_step_attach.go targetMet):

WHERE plan_id = $1 AND status = $2 AND NOT no_submission
  AND jsonb_typeof(recommendations) = 'array' AND jsonb_array_length(recommendations) > 0

PostgreSQL does not evaluate separate WHERE quals in written order; the planner orders them by cost. EXPLAIN on PG 17 puts jsonb_array_length(recommendations) > 0 BEFORE jsonb_typeof(...) = 'array', so a row with scalar recommendations (JSON null, which is what SavePurchaseExecution writes for a nil slice) that passes status='failed' AND NOT no_submission raises SQLSTATE 22023 cannot get array length of a scalar.

Such rows exist: migration 000113 added no_submission with DEFAULT FALSE for every existing row, and pre-#631 plan steps failed empty (ErrPlanStepNoRecommendations) with null recs. Also reachable when failExistingPlanStep transitions to failed but its follow-up save of no_submission fails.

Repro (real Postgres 17, real planstep.Resolve, #867 head 996a48e): weekly 25%, cov 80, demand 100; step 1 buys 20 and completes; a completed row holds 20 more; one failed row no_submission=false, recommendations nil. Tick at step 2 (target 40, committed 40):

plan <id> step 2: failed to count unknown-outcome executions of plan <id>: ERROR: cannot get array length of a scalar (SQLSTATE 22023)

The tx rolls back, no row is written, the ramp never advances, and every tick repeats the error: a silent stall with no visible failed row (violates the Q1 decision "never strands a ramp without a visible failed row or notice"). No over-buy.

Fix: one qual, e.g. AND CASE WHEN jsonb_typeof(recommendations) = 'array' THEN jsonb_array_length(recommendations) > 0 ELSE false END (the root-row UPDATE at :64 is a single OR expression and short-circuits, so it is safe), plus a regression test with a nil-recs failed no_submission=false row.

Gate verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED at 089a16f

Reviewed bafa537 in full, then the 089a16f delta (lint-only: err = reuse and a range-by-key loop; no logic change).

Blocking: unknown-outcome count errors on a failed row whose recommendations are JSON null

internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_target_met.go:41-44:

WHERE plan_id = $1 AND status = $2 AND NOT no_submission
  AND jsonb_typeof(recommendations) = 'array' AND jsonb_array_length(recommendations) > 0

Postgres does not evaluate AND operands left to right, and here it runs jsonb_array_length on the scalar null and fails with SQLSTATE 22023 ("cannot get array length of a scalar"). SavePurchaseExecutionTx stores nil recommendations as JSON null, and failed rows with no_submission = false are the default (migration 000113: legacy, reaped and unknown-outcome rows). So any plan holding one such row makes CompleteTargetMetStepTx fail, the claim tx rolls back on every tick, and the ramp stalls with no visible failed row. That breaks the "never strand a ramp without a visible failed row" rule in the agreed decisions.

Repro (local PG 17, real schema, migrations to 118), which fails at both bafa537 and 089a16f:

f := newRampFixture(ctx, t, 1, 1, 4)
f.rowWithRecs(ctx, t, 1, &f.accounts[0], StatusCompleted, false, baselineRec(f.accounts[0], "m5.large", 3))
f.rowWithRecs(ctx, t, 1, &f.accounts[0], StatusFailed, false) // recommendations = JSON null
require.NoError(t, f.store.WithTx(ctx, func(tx pgx.Tx) error {
    return f.store.CompleteTargetMetStepTx(ctx, tx, f.planID, 2, "", "met")
}))
// -> failed to count unknown-outcome executions ...: cannot get array length of a scalar (SQLSTATE 22023)

Suggested fix: make the guard order-independent, for example AND CASE WHEN jsonb_typeof(recommendations) = 'array' THEN jsonb_array_length(recommendations) > 0 ELSE false END. Apply the same to the root compare-and-set at :64. Its <> 'array' OR jsonb_array_length(...) = 0 passes today for a null-recs pending root (I tested it), but it has the same order dependence. Add the repro above as a regression test.

Checked and fine

  • G3: the no-op path goes through advanceRampStep, so requireRampStepBought still runs and is unchanged. Test: a step-2 account fan-out that failed without buying, then CompleteTargetMetStepTx(step 2, ""), gives ErrRampStepIncomplete, the step stays at 1 and the no-op row rolls back. Bypassing advanceRampStep (mutant) fails that test.
  • Root CAS empty-recs guard (survivor in the author's run): it is a real guard. Without it, a pending root that already has attached recommendations gets completed as a no-op. I wrote a test (root with recs, expect ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus and the row stays pending) that kills the mutant. NOT no_submission (the other survivor) is killed by a test with a failed no_submission=true row that has recs (expect "0 failed row(s)"). It only affects note text, so it is not a money hole.
  • Clear on edit: it runs atomically in the same tx, under the plan row lock, after the optimistic-lock update. Services identity (provider, service, term, payment of enabled services) and ramp shape (type, pps, steps, interval) clear the baseline. Coverage, name and position do not. A clear at step k>1 skips every identity, which means under-buy and fail loud, never a re-buy. The UpdatePurchasePlanTx-only callers (next date, ramp position) cannot change shape.
  • Locks: the edit path takes only the plan row lock; the claim path takes the provider advisory lock and then the plan lock. No cycle.
  • No migration or schema change.
  • Integration tests for config, planstep and purchase pass at bafa537 on local PG 17 (-tags integration, real schema). Unit ./... passes.

Non-blocking follow-ups

  • Mutants surviving the author's tests: dropping PercentPerStep or the Enabled filter from rampBaselineStale, and not refreshing UpdatedAt after the clear (the stale version token returned to the client would cause a spurious 409 on the next edit).
  • Changing include/exclude engines, regions or types and MinCount does not clear the baseline. That can only cause under-buy.
  • rootID == "" does not refuse when a live pending root already exists for the step. feat(purchase): size plan steps against the frozen baseline and own ledger #867 passes the root, so this is defense in depth only.

Mutation run on this PR: 16 mutants on the changed money lines. 13 killed with the gate tests added; 3 survived (listed above, non-blocking).

A failed row with JSON-null recommendations made the unknown-outcome count
and the root compare-and-set raise SQLSTATE 22023, because Postgres does not
order the jsonb_typeof guard before jsonb_array_length. Wrap the length in a
CASE, add the gate repro tests, and clear the sloppyReassign lint.

Gate verdict: APPROVED at c7a587d

Re-gated from 089a16f. The delta: CASE guards on the unknown-outcome count and on the root compare-and-set, the gate's repro tests adopted as TestTargetMet_*, and a lint rename (updErr). The two CASE expressions are the only jsonb SQL in the PR. CASE fixes the evaluation order, and a SQL-NULL recommendations falls to ELSE 0: it is not counted as unknown, and it is treated as an empty root. No other order-dependent predicate remains.

Evidence (local PG 17 with the real schema migrated to 118, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, git archive of the exact SHAs):

  • Fails before the fix: with the new tests on 089a16f, TestTargetMet_UnknownCountScalarRecs FAILS (SQLSTATE 22023). It passes at c7a587d. The other adopted tests are guard tests and pass on both, as expected (the earlier mutation run showed they kill the CAS-recs, NOT no_submission and gate-bypass mutants).
  • At c7a587d, go test -tags integration ./internal/config/ ./internal/planstep/ ./internal/purchase/ passes (ok x3), and go test ./... passes.
  • CI is green on every check at this SHA (including Lint Code, Integration Tests and E2E), and mergeStateStatus is CLEAN.

The earlier review findings stand (G3 holds through the unchanged requireRampStepBought; the clear is atomic and can only under-buy; no lock cycle; no migration). These follow-ups are non-blocking: the mutants on pps and on the Enabled filter in rampBaselineStale survive; UpdatedAt is not refreshed after the clear; the include/exclude filters are not part of the stale shape; and rootID == "" has no live-root guard.
