fix(scripts): anchor every .gitallowed entry (#804) - #813
Conversation
…tector (#804) The 18 bare placeholder entries (12-digit account IDs, a UUID) in .gitallowed exempted any line containing them from every detector, so a real secret next to a placeholder scanned clean. Replace them with ^path:line:content$ anchored entries that pin the whole line, with one digit of each placeholder bracketed so entries do not match themselves. Drop the setup script's "AWS Secret Access Key" pattern: its negated class matched any run of 41 non-alphanumeric characters (box-drawing banners, dash rules), never a key, and would need ~770 allowlist lines. --register-aws already covers AWS secret keys. The allowlist self-test now also checks that every entry is ^...$ anchored, that a secret plus a placeholder on one line is caught, and runs the file-argument scan of all tracked files that CI's pre-commit uses (macOS git grep ignores \s, so a no-argument scan passes where CI fails). Restrict credential entries to known synthetic values.
In a matching test file, this entry allows any quoted password or api_key value of up to 40 characters. For example, api_key: "AKIA0123456789ABCDEF" matches the entry even though AWS registration detects the key-shaped value. Because git-secrets exempts the entire matching line, a real credential in that field would pass the scan. Replace the unrestricted value pattern with known fixture values or exact fixture lines, and test that a credential in the same field is rejected. (github.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Check the path and line-number anchors.
This check accepts ^internal/auth/.*$ because it checks only the first and last characters. That entry has no line-number or content constraint, yet the structural check reports PASS. Reject entries without the required path:[0-9]+:content structure, and add that entry as a negative test for the check. (github.com)

Gate verdict: APPROVE at fd90607Independent adversarial review (Opus 5.5, did not author this PR). Tooling/CI-only change; no mutation sweep per policy. All runs below were in throwaway clones with isolated HOME/global git config. 1. Anchored allowlist. All 18 bare base entries are gone; every active entry is 2. Self-test. Head: 3. CI-path pre-commit. Fresh clone of the head, global 4. Removed detector 5. Safety. No real or realistic secrets: entries hold existing synthetic placeholders and test passwords, and fixtures are assembled at runtime. The script keeps 6. Merge state. CI all green on the SHA (CI - Build & Test, pre-commit incl. "Scan for AWS secrets Passed", git-secrets allowlist self-test), CodeRabbit success, mergeStateStatus CLEAN. Labels match #804. The PR merged with current main (d2afc4e, new test files) scans clean under register-aws, and the self-test there is 42/0. |
…#1125) The old negated-class "AWS Secret Access Key" pattern matched runs of 41 non-key characters (box-drawing and dash banner lines) and never a key. #813 dropped it, so nothing caught a bare 40-character key with no aws/secret-style name in front, and clones set up before #813 still carried the dead pattern in their local config. Register a positive detector instead: exactly 40 characters from [A-Za-z0-9/+], bounded by a non-key character or the line edge, that contain an upper-case letter next to or one character away from a digit (about 0.3% of random keys lack one). That filter is what keeps commit SHAs, long test names and paths out. ERE has no lookahead, so the patterns spell out the pair's position; they are split into eight 5-position windows to keep BSD grep -w on macOS usable. Each pattern also takes in the word around its bounds, because git-secrets greps with -w and would otherwise miss token=KEY. Re-running the script also removes the legacy pattern from the repo's config. Allowlist the one tracked line the detector flags that holds no secret (an upper-case hex OIDC thumbprint in a test), and extend the allowlist self-test with bare-key, near-miss and legacy-removal cases. …rs (#1273) Audit follow-up to #1972 (issue #368). The bare placeholder block was already replaced with anchored entries in #813; what remained: - The shape-based test-credential entry in .gitallowed allowed any quoted password or api_key value up to 40 characters in a test file, so a real password or a 32-character API key pasted into a fixture scanned clean. It now lists the placeholder values in use (on main and the open fork branches). - The DSN detectors missed libpq's postgresql:// scheme, golang-migrate's pgx/pgx5 schemes (used by this repo's migrations), "+driver" schemes, mariadb://, DSNs with an empty user name, and a password passed as a ?password= query parameter. URL-encoded credentials and IPv6 hosts were already covered and are now pinned by tests. - The widened detectors no longer match their own registration lines, so the two DSN self-match entries are gone; a re-run of the setup script drops the pre-#368 DSN detectors from an existing clone. - Three docs lines the widened detectors flag (local docker-compose password, a ${DB_PASSWORD} reference, prose naming pgx5) get whole-line entries. Ports cloud-commitments-cli#2172 (and mcp#57). Only scripts/ and .gitallowed change; no Go or deploy paths.
.gitallowed: the 18 bare placeholder entries (12-digit account IDs, a UUID) are gone. git-secrets matches allowlist regexes against the wholepath:line:contentline and exempts the entire line from every detector, so a real secret next to a placeholder scanned clean. Replaced with^path:[0-9]+:...$entries (two shape-based ones for single-field account IDs and test credentials in test files, plus one-off whole-line entries). Digits and trigger letters are bracketed so no entry matches itself.scripts/setup-git-secrets.sh: removed the[^A-Za-z0-9/+=]{40}[^A-Za-z0-9/+=]"AWS Secret Access Key" pattern. This is the one deliberate platform-specific difference from cli#2172, which kept it.scripts/test-git-secrets-allowlist.sh: new checks that every entry is^...$anchored, that a secret plus a placeholder on one line is caught (AKIA-shaped key + account ID, password + UUID), and a file-argument scan of all tracked files (git ls-files -z | xargs -0 git secrets --scan, the path CI's pre-commit takes; macOSgit grepignores\s, so a no-argument scan passes locally while CI fails).sayshim, hook verification,[[:space:]]and the PEM fix were already in this repo; unchanged.Verification (macOS, git-secrets 1.3.0, HOME-isolated):
