sec(auth): close API-key persistence primitive on password rotation (#102) - #392
Conversation
…102) CreateAPIKey required no password re-verification (unlike the comparable MFASetup/MFADisable pattern), ExpiresAt was optional and uncapped so a key could be minted to never expire, and ChangePassword/ConfirmPasswordReset (and UpdateUserProfile) invalidated sessions but left any API key the attacker held fully valid. Together these let a briefly-stolen session mint a durable credential that survives the victim's own password rotation. - CreateAPIKey now re-verifies the caller's password (same helper as MFASetup/MFADisable) and requires ExpiresAt, capped at the new MaxAPIKeyLifetime (1 year). - ChangePassword, ConfirmPasswordReset and UpdateUserProfile now revoke the user's API keys alongside their existing session invalidation, via a shared invalidateUserCredentialsBestEffort helper. - Property (1) of the linked finding (unscoped key inherits the owner's full permissions via computeEffectivePermissionsFromAuthCtx) is tracked and fixed separately in #61; this PR does not touch that code path. Fail closed when credential invalidation fails.
invalidateUserCredentialsBestEffort discards RevokeAllUserAPIKeys errors. That method can fail while listing keys or stop at the first key-update failure, leaving later keys active. ChangePassword and ConfirmPasswordReset still persist the new password and return success. UpdateUserProfile persists the password before calling the helper. An attacker-held API key can therefore remain usable after rotation.
Return the invalidation error and do not persist the new password. Ensure UpdateUserProfile obtains this result before UpdateUser, or enforce a persisted credential version that API-key authentication checks.

Partially addressed, not fully: the reordering fix on the sibling thread (line 274) means invalidation now only runs after a successful password persist, so a failed UpdateUser can no longer leave a caller with revoked credentials for an unchanged password.
I'm not implementing full transactional atomicity (return the invalidation error and block persistence, or a shared DB transaction) in this PR. Reasons:
- No Tx-capable store interface exists in this codebase (checked
internal/auth/interfaces.goand the Postgres store) -- adding one would be a genuine architectural change spanning the store layer, not a scoped fix. - The existing
DeleteUserSessionscall (pre-dating this PR) has always been best-effort/non-blocking with the same failure-tolerance characteristics this finding flags for API-key revocation. Making API-key revocation fail-closed while session invalidation stays best-effort would be an inconsistent half-fix; making both fail-closed is the larger change in (1). - Fail-closed here has a real UX cost for exactly the attack scenario issue sec(auth): unscoped API key is a permanent MFA-bypassing clone of its owner that survives password reset #102 describes: a victim urgently trying to rotate a compromised password could be blocked entirely by a transient API-key-store failure, which is arguably worse than the residual (much narrower) window this leaves.
Filing a follow-up issue to track full atomicity for password-rotation credential invalidation across both sessions and API keys.

@cristim, the reordering fixes the case where UpdateUser fails after credentials have been revoked. Thanks for clarifying the scope and the trade-off.
The original finding remains: if RevokeAllUserAPIKeys fails, the password change can succeed while an active API key remains usable. I understand why you are leaving full credential-invalidation atomicity outside #392. I’ll keep this thread open as the follow-up risk rather than request a partial fail-closed change here.
Would you like me to open the follow-up issue for you?

Learning: In `internal/auth/service_password.go`, password rotation used best-effort `DeleteUserSessions` before PR #392. The PR extends that best-effort policy to API-key revocation; making session and API-key invalidation atomic is separate follow-up work.

- Reject a past ExpiresAt on CreateAPIKey (previously only the upper bound was checked, so a key could be minted already expired). - Invalidate sessions and API keys only after the new password is persisted in ChangePassword/ConfirmPasswordReset, so a failed UpdateUser no longer revokes credentials for a password that never actually changed. - Parse/format the API-key expiration date field using local calendar components instead of a UTC round-trip, which could reject a same-day or next-day expiration near local midnight. Full DB-transaction atomicity across password persistence and credential invalidation (also flagged by CodeRabbit) is a larger architectural change -- no Tx-capable store interface exists yet, and the same best-effort/non-blocking pattern already applies to session invalidation across this codebase, not just API keys. Out of scope for this security-focused PR; tracked as a follow-up. Co-Authored-By: claude-flow <ruv@ruv.net>

Independent adversarial review + local verification: MERGE at 62984e0. CreateAPIKey now re-verifies the caller's password and requires an ExpiresAt capped at 1 year; ChangePassword, ConfirmPasswordReset (incl. the admin-initiated reset flow) and UpdateUserProfile revoke the user's API keys after the new hash persists. #61's scoping untouched. Pre-fix scratch tests showed a key minted with no password/expiry and surviving a password change; head tests pass; 3476 race tests; lint 0 issues. Follow-ups filed: fail-loud revocation and a password_changed_at validation rule. |
…s set Root cause: after rebasing PR #375 onto main (which merged #392's password/expiry validation for CreateAPIKey), validateCreateAPIKeyRequest now checks permissions before expiresAt. The three expiresAt-focused tests (nil, too-far, in-the-past) still passed []Permission{}, so they now hit ErrEmptyAPIKeyPermissions before ever reaching the expiresAt check they exist to exercise. Give them a real permission so they reach the assertion they're actually testing.
Summary
Closes the API-key persistence primitive described in #102: an attacker who briefly holds a victim's session could mint an API key that survives the victim's own password rotation. This PR covers properties (2), (3) and (4) of the finding. Property (1) (unscoped key inherits the owner's full permissions via
computeEffectivePermissionsFromAuthCtx) is tracked and fixed separately in #61; this PR does not touch that code path, and re-checkedcomputeEffectivePermissionsFromAuthCtxon the fresh clone before writing any fix to confirm it was still unfixed / not something to avoid colliding with.Root cause
CreateAPIKey(internal/auth/service_apikeys.go:42, pre-fix) required no password re-verification, unlike the comparable sensitive-action pattern already used byMFASetup/MFADisable(service_mfa.go:296,:444).ExpiresAtwas a nullable pointer with no validation and no cap;nilmeant "never expires", so a leaked key had unbounded lifetime.ChangePasswordandConfirmPasswordReset(service_password.go:255,:359, pre-fix) both calledDeleteUserSessionsand nothing else. A key authenticates viaX-API-Key, never touches the session store, so it stayed fully valid across a password rotation meant to lock an attacker out.Fix
CreateAPIKeynow takes apasswordparameter and re-verifies it against the caller's stored hash before minting a key, reusingverifyPassword(the same helperMFASetup/MFADisablecall). New sentinelErrAPIKeyInvalidPasswordmaps to 401 at the handler.ExpiresAtis now required and capped at a new named constant,MaxAPIKeyLifetime(1 year). New sentinelsErrAPIKeyExpiresAtRequired/ErrAPIKeyExpiresAtTooFarmap to 400. No existing configurable-duration pattern fit this (the closest,SessionDuration, is a different concern), so this follows the same plain-constant convention asPasswordResetExpiry/PasswordSetupExpiryin the same package rather than adding new config plumbing nothing currently asks for.Service.RevokeAllUserAPIKeysdeactivates every active API key for a user (reusingListAPIKeysByUser+UpdateAPIKey, no new persistence).ChangePasswordandConfirmPasswordResetnow call it alongsideDeleteUserSessions, via a sharedinvalidateUserCredentialsBestEfforthelper (best-effort/logged, matching the existing session-invalidation error handling).UpdateUserProfile(service_user.go) is a third self-service password-rotation path with the identical gap (callsDeleteUserSessionsand nothing else). Since it's the same vulnerability class in the same file family, and leaving it open would make the fix trivially bypassable via the profile-update endpoint, it now also callsinvalidateUserCredentialsBestEffort.validateCreateAPIKeyRequestandinvalidateUserCredentialsBestEfforthelpers were extracted specifically to keepCreateAPIKey,ChangePassword,ConfirmPasswordResetandUpdateUserProfileat or under the repo's gocyclo gate (-over 10); all four were sitting exactly at 10 pre-fix and would have gone over with the added branches inline.frontend/src/apikeys.ts,index.html,api/types.ts): the "Create API Key" form previously had an optional "never expires" checkbox and no password field. Left unmodified, the backend change would have made the live UI feature always fail. The form now asks for the caller's password (base64-encoded, same convention as login/MFA) and always requires an expiration date (prefilled 90 days out; the actual cap is enforced and surfaced server-side).internal/api/openapi.yamlupdated to documentpasswordand the now-requiredexpires_at.Regression tests
