test(purchase): cover the committed-but-unsaved AUDIT LOSS ack branch - #391
Conversation
Add TestExecuteForAccount_CommittedButUnsavedIsAcked, which drives the per-account fan-out through handleExecutePurchase with one account that fails credential resolution (committed=false) and one whose cloud purchase succeeds but whose own SavePurchaseExecution call fails (the AUDIT LOSS branch at execution.go:269-270). Asserts handleExecutePurchase still returns nil (ack) so the SQS message is not redelivered and the commitment is not bought twice, and that the root row lands as partially_completed. The only accounts across the existing suite that hit this exact "committed==true with an error" return either save cleanly (TestMultiAccountPartialSuccessIsAcked) or exercise a different AUDIT LOSS site (execution_test.go:923, credential-failure path at execution.go:300), so this branch had zero coverage. Confirmed the new test fails pre-fix-shaped mutation: changed `return committed, ...` to `return false, ...` at execution.go:269-270 (the natural-looking "we failed, report failure" edit the issue warns about). With that mutation, committed drops to 0 across both accounts, executeMultiAccount returns errAllAccountsFailed instead of *multiAccountPartialError, and handleExecutePurchase no longer acks -- the test fails on require.NoError with "all accounts failed". Reverted the mutation and confirmed the test passes again. Closes #258

…ertion Per CodeRabbit review: without asserting the specific "AUDIT LOSS... acct-unsaved" text in savedRoot.Error, the test could pass even if acct-unsaved's SavePurchaseExecution failure were silently skipped, since acct-bad's unrelated credential-resolution error alone already satisfies committed>0 && err!=nil.
|
Addressed the nitpick: pinned the specific AUDIT LOSS message for acct-unsaved in the savedRoot.Error assertion so the test can't pass on the unrelated acct-bad credential error alone. @coderabbitai review |

Independent review + local verification: MERGE at d02a31e. Test-only; two mutants killed (the committed>0 aggregator and swallowing the AUDIT LOSS error). |
Summary
Adds a regression test for the "committed but unsaved" branch in the
per-account purchase fan-out that decides whether an SQS message is acked
or redelivered, closing the A16-006 gap described in #258.
Root cause
In
executeForAccount, there is exactly one place where it returnscommitted == truetogether with an error: the cloud purchase succeededbut the per-account
SavePurchaseExecutioncall failed(
internal/purchase/execution.go:269-270, the "AUDIT LOSS" branch). Thatreturn value is what
executeMultiAccountuses to decide between*multiAccountPartialError(acked, since real commitments already exist)and
errAllAccountsFailed(not acked, triggers SQS redelivery). The branchhad zero test coverage:
TestMultiAccountPartialSuccessIsAckedonlyexercises accounts whose
SavePurchaseExecutionFnreturns nil, and the onestub in the package that errors (
execution_test.go:923) drives adifferent AUDIT LOSS site (the credential-failure path at
execution.go:300). A natural-looking edit toreturn false, ...at thatline would silently make a run whose purchase already succeeded be reported
as a flat failure, causing SQS redelivery and a double-buy.
Fix
Test-only change: added
TestExecuteForAccount_CommittedButUnsavedIsAckedininternal/purchase/money_path_regression_test.go, cloned fromTestMultiAccountPartialSuccessIsAcked's fixture shape. Two accounts:acct-bad: fails credential resolution deterministically (committed=false),so it can never itself supply the
committed > 0signalacct-unsaved: its cloud purchase succeeds, but its ownSavePurchaseExecutioncall fails, hitting the AUDIT LOSS branch undertest
Asserts
handleExecutePurchasestill returns nil (ack) and the root rowlands as
partially_completed. No production code changed; the branch wasalready correct.
Regression test proof (mutation check)
Confirmed the new test has teeth by mutating the exact branch the issue
warns about:
if saveErr := m.config.SavePurchaseExecution(ctx, &acctExec); saveErr != nil { - return committed, fmt.Errorf("AUDIT LOSS: failed to save execution record for account %s: %w", account.ID, saveErr) + return false, fmt.Errorf("AUDIT LOSS: failed to save execution record for account %s: %w", account.ID, saveErr) }With that mutation,
committeddrops to 0 across both accounts (acct-badnever committed either), so
executeMultiAccountreturnserrAllAccountsFailedinstead of*multiAccountPartialError, andhandleExecutePurchaseno longer acks:Reverted the mutation and confirmed the test passes again.
