sec(api): intersect explicit account filters with allowed_accounts on dashboard KPIs - #374
Conversation
… dashboard KPIs resolveDashboardAccountScope applied the session's allowed_accounts scope only when the caller supplied no account_ids/account_id filter at all. A restricted session that DID supply an explicit filter got it back unintersected, and calculateCommitmentMetrics had no downstream post-filter (unlike the recommendations half or the inventory handlers), so GET /api/dashboard/summary?account_ids=<out-of-scope-uuid> leaked that account's ActiveCommitments/CommittedMonthly/YTDSavings/CurrentSavings to a scoped view:recommendations user. Move the allowed_accounts intersection into a new intersectAccountFilterScope helper (internal/api/scoping.go) and run every caller-supplied filter through it unconditionally: an unrestricted session's filter passes through unchanged, a restricted session with no filter still gets the full allowed_accounts scope, and a restricted session with an explicit filter now gets the intersection of the two, dropping any out-of-scope account down to the existing "matches nothing" sentinel. Regression test: TestGetDashboardSummary_ScopedUser_ExplicitOutOfScopeAccountIsIgnored (internal/api/handler_dashboard_test.go) asserts a session scoped to acct-A requesting ?account_ids=<acct-B> gets zeroed commitment KPIs and never calls GetActivePurchaseHistory. Verified it fails pre-fix (git stash on the two source files reintroduces the bug; the mock panics with "I don't know what to return" because the pre-fix code calls GetActivePurchaseHistory carrying acct-B's id, which the test deliberately leaves unstubbed) and passes post-fix. A companion test, TestGetDashboardSummary_ScopedUser_ExplicitInScopeAccountStillWorks, guards against overcorrecting the intersection for an account the session does have access to. The audit's A02-006 finding (getHistory applies its LIMIT before the allowed_accounts post-filter, truncating a scoped user's page) is the same unintersected-scope shape but on a different, more invasive code path (the SQL LIMIT/pagination contract in fetchPurchaseHistory) and is left as a residual finding per the issue, noted in the PR body rather than folded into this fix. CodeRabbit review on #374: intersectDualColumnScope compared filterExternalIDsByProvider's "" (unknown-provider) bucket only against allowedExternalIDsByProvider[""], which resolveAllowedAccountScope never populates -- it always groups by the account's real provider via resolveAccountFilterIDs. The "" bucket comes from resolveSingleAccountFilterIDs's fallback for a legacy account_id that resolves to a raw external number rather than a known UUID, so a scoped user filtering by an external number belonging to one of their own allowed accounts got zeroed commitment KPIs instead of that account's real data. Fails closed (no leak), but a functional regression from pre-#99-fix behavior. Fix: match a "" entry against every allowed provider's ids and, on a hit, re-group it under that real provider so the downstream dual-column predicate still scopes it correctly. Regression test: TestGetDashboardSummary_ScopedUser_LegacyExternalAccountIDStillMatchesAllowedAccount (internal/api/handler_dashboard_test.go). Verified it fails against the prior intersectDualColumnScope (git stash on scoping.go alone, keeping the new test) -- ActiveCommitments comes back 0 instead of 1 -- and passes with this fix. Independent adversarial review + local verification: MERGE at c11a240. The caller-supplied dashboard account filter is now always intersected with the session's allowed_accounts (unrestricted: pass-through; restricted, no filter: full allowed scope; restricted + filter: intersection; empty intersection: a sentinel that matches nothing, short-circuited before the store). The legacy external-id bucket fix narrows scope, never widens it. All three regression tests have teeth (the out-of-scope test fails at merge-base, the legacy-id test fails at the first commit). go test -race ./internal/api 2219 passed; golangci-lint v2.10.1 0 issues; checks green. Follow-ups filed: inventory's filter still relies on post-filters; GET /api/plans list scoping. |
Summary
Fixes a cross-tenant data leak on the dashboard commitment KPIs: a
restricted (
allowed_accounts-scoped) session that supplied an explicitaccount_ids/account_idfilter got that filter back unintersected withits own scope, so requesting another tenant's account UUID returned that
account's
active_commitments,committed_monthly,ytd_savings, andby_service[].current_savings.Root cause
resolveDashboardAccountScope(internal/api/handler_dashboard.go)resolved the client-supplied
account_ids/account_idparams and returnedthem as-is.
getDashboardSummaryonly substituted the session'sallowed_accountsscope (resolveAllowedAccountScope) when the resolvedfilter was empty — i.e. only on the no-filter path. When the caller
supplied an explicit filter, it flowed straight into
calculateCommitmentMetrics->fetchCommitmentPurchases->GetActivePurchaseHistorywith no intersection againstallowed_accountsand no downstream post-filter (unlike the recommendations half, which is
scoped by
filterDashboardRecommendations, and unlike the inventoryhandlers, which post-filter via
filterPurchaseHistoryByAllowedAccounts).A Read-Only user scoped to
acct-AcallingGET /api/dashboard/summary?account_ids=<acct-B-uuid>received acct-B'scommitment KPIs.
Fix
Added
intersectAccountFilterScope(internal/api/scoping.go), the singlechoke point that narrows a caller-supplied dual-column account filter
(UUIDs + external-ids-by-provider) down to the session's
allowed_accountsscope, unconditionally:
unchanged (previous behavior preserved).
allowed_accountsscope (previous no-filter behavior preserved).the two. An account named in the filter but outside
allowed_accountsisdropped instead of honored. An empty intersection resolves to the
existing non-nil-but-empty "matches nothing" sentinel that
fetchCommitmentPurchasesalready short-circuits on (issue sec(auth): an admin-scoped API key ignores its account and amount constraints on non-strict checks #956), so theKPIs come back zeroed rather than falling through to all-accounts data.
resolveDashboardAccountScopenow runs every resolved filter through thishelper instead of leaving the allowed_accounts fallback to a guard in the
caller. This mirrors the issue's own "structural root cause" note: the
intersection belongs in the scope resolver, not in each caller.
Regression test
TestGetDashboardSummary_ScopedUser_ExplicitOutOfScopeAccountIsIgnored(
internal/api/handler_dashboard_test.go): a session scoped toacct-A(via
GetAllowedAccountsAPI) callsGET /api/dashboard/summary?account_ids=<acct-B-uuid>. Asserts thereturned KPIs are zeroed (
ActiveCommitments == 0,CommittedMonthly == 0,YTDSavings == 0) and, critically, thatGetActivePurchaseHistoryisnever called — the mock deliberately has no
.On(...)stub for it, soif the pre-fix code path reaches it with acct-B's id, testify panics with
"I don't know what to return" instead of silently leaking.
Proved it fails pre-fix:
git stashon just the two source files(
handler_dashboard.go,scoping.go) while keeping the test, re-ran thetest suite — it panics exactly as described above. Restored the fix and
it passes.
Added a companion test,
TestGetDashboardSummary_ScopedUser_ExplicitInScopeAccountStillWorks,proving a scoped session requesting an account it does have access to
still gets that account's real KPIs (guards against over-correcting the
intersection into a blanket deny).
Residual finding not fixed in this PR
The issue's audit appendix also flags A02-006 (low severity):
getHistory(
internal/api/handler_history.go:39-71) applies its SQLLIMITbeforefilterPurchaseHistoryByAllowedAccountsruns, so a scoped user's page can betruncated (not leaked) by other tenants' rows filling the limited page ahead
of the post-filter. This is the same unintersected-scope shape, but fixing
it means folding the allowed-accounts intersection into
resolveHistoryAccountFilter/fetchPurchaseHistory's SQL path, whichchanges when the
GetAllPurchaseHistoryfast-path vsGetPurchaseHistoryFilteredpath is taken for every restricted session(no-filter included) across ~30 existing
getHistorytests -- a materiallylarger blast radius than this dashboard fix, and it interacts with the
LIMIT/no-offset pagination gap the same finding calls out. Leftunfixed here per the issue's own guidance to note it as a residual finding
rather than rush it; recommend a dedicated follow-up PR against issue #99's
A02-006 appendix (or a new issue).
