fix(ri-exchange): bound the direct-execute claim and provider call by one pre-save deadline - #1841
Closes#1840 (p1). It was found in the plan review for #1836, and has been live on main since #1838.
Problem. For a direct RI exchange, the audit row's created_at is taken under the spend lock in the save. Then the idempotency claim ran on the request context, which has no deadline in HTTP-server mode, and the pool has no acquire timeout. Only after the claim did the 4-minute execution budget start. With an exhausted pool, the AWS accept could therefore be sent at created_at + any wait + 4 minutes, past the settle runbook's assumption that a submitted row older than 5 minutes is no longer in flight. An operator following the runbook could release an RI whose exchange then goes through.
Fix.
One deadline: taken just before the audit save, time.Now().Add(riExchangeExecutionTimeout).
The claim runs under context.WithDeadline(ctx, deadline). A claim that times out, or that answers only after the deadline, takes the existing failure path: the row is finalized failed ("not submitted to the provider") and never reaches the provider.
The provider call runs under ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline(ctx, deadline) instead of a fresh DetachedWithTimeout. So the call ends at most about riExchangeExecutionTimeout after created_at, whatever the claim or lock wait. (The deadline is taken before the save, so a slow spend-lock wait also counts against it, which is the conservative direction.)
Scope: both the AWS and Azure direct executes. Azure shares beginDirectExchange, so it gets the same bound. Nothing else changes: the third DetachedWithTimeout call site, which isn't a direct execute, is unchanged.
TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave: with a slow claim, the exec context's deadline is the pre-save deadline, not claim end + timeout.
TestExecuteExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes: a claim that outlives the deadline never calls the executor, and the row is finalized failed.
The runbook integration test now uses 6 minutes (not settled) and 11 minutes (settled).
The new tests use a test-only executionTimeoutOverride on the handler. riExchangeExecutionTimeout stays a const.
Verification
Targeted tests, go build ./..., go vet ./internal/api/... and the whole go test ./internal/api/ package pass. The whole package catches any caller of the changed beginDirectExchange signature.
go test -tags integration -run RIExchangeDirectRunbook ./internal/config/ passes.
Behavioural red (the old code doesn't compile against the new tests), each probe reverted afterwards:
the provider call back on DetachedWithTimeout fails ...AnchoredBeforeSave;
removing the claim deadline and the post-claim check fails both new tests.
AWS and Azure direct exchanges now use a single execution time limit for submission and provider processing. If submission exceeds that limit, the exchange is marked failed and is not sent to the provider.
Submitted exchanges are now eligible for settlement after 10 minutes, increased from 5 minutes.
Documentation
Updated settlement guidance to reflect the 10-minute threshold.
…save deadline
The execution window was measured from after the submit claim, so a slow
claim pushed the provider accept past created_at + 4 minutes. Compute one
deadline before the audit save, bound the claim with it (a timed-out claim
never reaches the executor and finalizes the row as failed), and run the
exec with DetachedWithDeadline. Azure shares beginDirectExchange and gets
the same bound. Runbook settle age moves from 5 to 10 minutes.

Walkthrough
AWS and Azure direct RI exchanges now use one execution deadline, established before the audit save, for submit claims and provider calls. Claims that fail or return after the deadline mark the audit row failed and do not call the provider. The settlement runbook and integration test use a 10-minute submitted-row threshold.
A positive handler override replaces the default timeout. AWS and Azure compute one deadline before saving the audit row and pass it to the claim and provider execution.
Deadline-bound claim and validation internal/api/ri_exchange_audit.go, internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go
The claim uses the shared deadline. Claim errors and late success finalize the audit row as failed and prevent provider execution. Tests cover timeout, late success, and deadline sharing for AWS and Azure.
Settlement age threshold runbooks/ri-exchange-direct-execution-settle.md, internal/config/store_postgres_ri_exchange_direct_runbook_integration_test.go
The runbook and integration test use a 10-minute threshold for submitted rows. Unknown rows remain eligible at any age.
LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-platform issue 1836 defines the submitted-row settlement threshold; this change raises the runbook threshold from 5 to 10 minutes.

The shared execution deadline and settlement changes have no established production blocker. The new deadline tests can fail spuriously on busy runners; replacing the scheduling-sensitive bound would improve reliability.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the direct-execute claim and provider call now share one deadline set before the audit save. The title follows conventional commit form and matches the file summaries and PR objectives. The runbook settlement threshold change (5 to 10 minutes) is a secondary change and is not in the title, which is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1840 has four coding requirements. Each is implemented at head 27ba6a7.
One deadline taken before the audit save [#1840]. In internal/api/handler_ri_exchange.go, executeExchange (AWS) and executeAzureExchange (Azure) compute deadline := time.Now().Add(h.exchangeExecutionTimeout()) before calling beginDirectExchange. beginDirectExchange performs SaveRIExchangeDirectExecution inside that call, so the deadline precedes created_at. Because created_at is at or after the deadline's start time, the provider call ends at or before created_at + riExchangeExecutionTimeout.
Claim bounded by the deadline [#1840]. In internal/api/ri_exchange_audit.go, beginDirectExchange now runs claimCtx, cancelClaim := context.WithDeadline(ctx, deadline) and passes claimCtx to claimExchangeSubmit. A slow claim therefore shortens the remaining execution window.
Provider call on the same deadline [#1840]. Both the AWS and Azure paths replace DetachedWithTimeout with ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline(ctx, deadline). The helper exists in internal/ctxutil/detached.go and keeps ctx values while dropping cancellation.
A claim that outlives the deadline never reaches the executor [#1840]. beginDirectExchange returns an error when the claim returns an error or when err == nil && claimCtx.Err() != nil. The error path finalizes the row as failed with "not submitted to the provider" and returns before the provider call.
The runbook threshold change to 10 minutes [#1840, owner decision Q2 for #1836] is implemented in runbooks/ri-exchange-direct-execution-settle.md, and the integration test expectations are updated to 6 and 11 minutes. The required automated tests are described in the PR and raw summary: a slow-claim deadline-anchoring test, a claim-outliving-deadline test, and an integration test. I did not read the test files directly. This verdict relies on the code diff and the test descriptions.
No coding requirement from #1840 is unmet on the evidence reviewed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes outside the AWS-only wording of #1840 are limited to the Azure direct execute and a test-only override.
Azure direct execute (executeAzureExchange). Azure shares beginDirectExchange, so the new signature requires a deadline argument at the Azure call site. Azure's provider call also used DetachedWithTimeout, which has the same bound-from-claim-end defect. The issue title, "the direct execute's claim", is not restricted to AWS. This change is connected to the same objective.
Test-only executionTimeoutOverride field on Handler, with exchangeExecutionTimeout() in ri_exchange_detached.go. This supports the new deadline tests and does not change production behavior when the field is zero.
Runbook and integration test changes. The issue explicitly requires the 10-minute threshold change.
Comment updates in ri_exchange_detached.go and ri_exchange_audit.go. These document the new deadline behavior.
The third DetachedWithTimeout call site, which the PR states is not a direct execute, is not part of this diff in the reviewed evidence. No unrelated code change was found.
Observation, not a scope failure: a claim that succeeds after the deadline is finalized as failed, but its idempotency key remains claimed. An identical retry inside the claim window would then be refused. The issue does not require different handling, and the PR review comments describe this as non-blocking.

Cold review of #1841 (closes #1840, p1): one commit on main d618d7c0, 0 behind. I read the diff and the files at this SHA, and treated the PR body as a claim. The production change is correct, and I'd approve it as written. Two of the behaviours it claims aren't pinned by any test: a mutant survives for each. Both fixes are test-only.
Checked and correct
The deadline is anchored before the save.deadline := time.Now().Add(h.exchangeExecutionTimeout()) is taken immediately before beginDirectExchange on both paths:
AWS: handler_ri_exchange.go:2059;
Azure: :1298.
The row's created_at is clock_timestamp() after the guard lock, so deadline <= created_at + riExchangeExecutionTimeout, plus app-to-DB clock skew. A slow save or lock wait only shortens the window, which is the conservative direction.
The claim is bounded. It runs under context.WithDeadline(ctx, deadline) (ri_exchange_audit.go:65-71).
A claim that times out, or answers after the deadline, takes the existing failure path: the row is finalized failed with "not submitted to the provider", and the provider is never called.
Expiry between the save and the claim: if the save itself runs past the deadline, the claim context is already expired. The claim fails immediately and the row is failed. That's correct.
The provider call is bounded and detached.ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline(ctx, deadline) is context.WithDeadline(context.WithoutCancel(ctx), deadline) (internal/ctxutil/detached.go:27-29).
A deadline cut mid-accept is finalized unknown, because awsDirectFailureStatus maps ErrOutcomeUnknown (change_audit.go:215-228), which the pinned library wraps around accept errors. A cut before the accept is finalized failed.
The runbook's created_at < now() - interval '10 minutes' (runbooks/ri-exchange-direct-execution-settle.md:54) leaves about 6 minutes for skew and the finalize save, consistent with decision 07b Q2 A.
The integration test now checks that 6 minutes doesn't settle and 11 minutes does.
Lambda budget: it's unchanged or tighter, since one deadline replaces a post-claim fresh timeout.
Findings (test gaps: mutation probes that survive)
Probes ran locally, scoped with -run 'TestExecuteExchange_|TestExecuteAzureExchange_|TestBeginDirectExchange|TestRIExchange' ./internal/api/, under heavy-review-2. The baseline passes.
P1, the AWS call back on a fresh DetachedWithTimeout after the claim, killed by TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave.
P3, the claim on the request context with no deadline, killed by the same test.
The post-claim deadline check survives deletion (P2).
TestExecuteExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes (ri_exchange_audit_test.go:629) uses slowClaimStore, which returns ctx.Err() when the deadline fires (:589-590). So the claim never succeeds late, and the branch the test is named for is never exercised.
Postgres can commit the claim just as the deadline passes, so that case is real. Without the check, the executor would run on an expired context. That happens to fail safe today, but the branch is unpinned.
Fix: a fake whose claim ignores ctx, waits past the deadline, then returns (true, nil). Assert the executor is never called and the row is finalized failed with "finished after the execution deadline".
The Azure half of the fix is untested (P4).
Reverting only executeAzureExchange to DetachedWithTimeout(ctx, riExchangeExecutionTimeout) (handler_ri_exchange.go:1308) fails nothing.
The body says "Both AWS and Azure direct executes", but both new tests drive executeExchange (AWS).
Fix: an Azure counterpart of …DeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave, with a slow claim and the Azure client stub recording execCtx's deadline, asserting it equals the pre-save deadline.
Non-blocking
A claim that succeeds after the deadline still holds the idempotency key for riExchangeIdempotencyWindow (15 min, change_idempotency.go:30).
An immediate retry of the same exchange then gets the 409 "an identical RI exchange claimed this submit … may be running, may have committed". That's safe, but misleading, since nothing was sent.
The audit row does record failed "not submitted to the provider: … finished after the execution deadline", so an operator can tell.
Releasing the claim on that path, or pointing the 409 text at the audit row, would make it clearer. A follow-up is fine.
CI at this SHA:CI - Build & Test run 42336090509, pre-commit run 42336090526 and Frontend build (PR) run 42336090518 all completed successfully. The full unit and integration suites come from CI; locally I ran only the scoped probes above. After the two tests are added, the delta is test-only, and I'll re-run P2 and P4 against them. Review only, not merging.
Cold review of #1841 (fixes #1840). The code fix is correct. Three of its claims are not pinned by any test: one Medium and two Low test gaps.
CI at this head is green, including Unit Tests and Integration Tests (api): run 42336090509. Locally I ran the scoped -run 'DirectExec|DirectClaim|ExecuteExchange|AzureExchange|AWSDirect|DirectExchange|Exchange_' ./internal/api/ once on the head, which passed, and then once per mutation probe, each in a fresh export.
Findings
Medium: the Azure bound is not tested. The fix is right at internal/api/handler_ri_exchange.go:1298 and :1308. But reverting the Azure provider call to ctxutil.DetachedWithTimeout(ctx, h.exchangeExecutionTimeout()) passes every test (probe azureFreshTimeout survived). Both new tests drive only the AWS executeExchange. Azure is a direct execute that can be left at submitted, so the runbook's 10-minute settle age depends on this bound just as much.
Fix: add the Azure counterpart of TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave: a slow claim, then assert the deadline on client.ExecuteExchange's context.
Fix: add the Azure counterpart of ...ClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes: the executor is never called and the row is failed.
Low: the post-claim check is untested. Making if err == nil && claimCtx.Err() != nil at internal/api/ri_exchange_audit.go:68 dead code passes every test (probe noPostClaimCheck survived). slowClaimStore returns ctx.Err() once the deadline passes, so this branch is never reached. The PR body's probe dropped this check together with the claim deadline, so it never tested the check on its own.
Fix: add a store whose claim succeeds only after the deadline has passed (it ignores ctx and returns true after the deadline). Assert that the executor is never called and the row is failed with "finished after the execution deadline".
Low: "anchored before the save" is not tested. Recomputing the deadline after SaveRIExchangeDirectExecution (ri_exchange_audit.go:57, recomputed before :65) passes every test (probe deadlineAfterSave survived). The test named ...AnchoredBeforeSave uses an instant save, so it only proves the deadline is anchored before the claim.
Fix: make the save slow (for example 150ms) and assert that the claim's deadline is at most before + budget.
What I attacked, with no finding
Expiry between the save and the claim. The claim runs on WithDeadline(ctx, deadline) (:65). An already-passed deadline fails the claim at once. The row is finalized failed ("not submitted to the provider") on a detached context (finalizeDirectExchange), so it is recorded even after the deadline or a client disconnect. The provider is never reached.
The audit row when the deadline fires mid-call.
AWS: an accept that fails on the deadline is ErrOutcomeUnknown, so the row is unknown (awsDirectFailureStatus, ri_exchange_audit.go:230). A pre-accept quote that fails is failed. Both are correct.
Azure: a deadline error is not a 4xx, so the row is unknown (directExchangeFailureStatus). Correct.
Request context cancelled mid-call.DetachedWithDeadline keeps the deadline and drops cancellation (:1308, :2069). A cancel during the claim fails the claim, and the row is failed. Correct.
Runbook vs the code constant. The provider call ends no later than deadline <= created_at + riExchangeExecutionTimeout (4m, ri_exchange_detached.go:30). The new 10-minute age leaves 6 minutes for app-to-DB clock skew and finalize, which matches decision 07b Q2 A. The integration test pins 6 minutes as not settled and 11 minutes as settled.
Probes that killed:
awsFreshTimeout was killed by ...AnchoredBeforeSave;
noClaimDeadline was killed by both new tests.
Third DetachedWithTimeout (handler_ri_exchange.go:3027). This is the approval flow, not a direct execute. It writes no ri_exchange_direct_executions row, so it is out of scope as the PR says.
Informational, no change asked: a claim that succeeds late keeps its key. Such a claim is taken in the DB but the row is failed. An identical resubmit inside riExchangeIdempotencyWindow (15m) then gets the 409 "verify its outcome", even though the row says not submitted. This only delays a retry, the 409 is the safe direction, and the window already behaved this way for any claim error that happened after the commit.
…aims and slow saves
Adds the Azure counterparts of the anchored-deadline and claim-timeout tests,
a claim that succeeds only after the deadline, and a slow audit save, so
reverting the Azure exec, dead-coding the post-claim check or computing the
deadline after the save each fail a test.

Fix round for the CHANGES from claude-fleet and claude-nibblets at 02b11b9. This is test-only, so the production code is unchanged.
27ba6a7 adds four tests to internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go (+107):
Azure counterparts (fleet 1, nibblets 2): TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave and TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes.
A claim that succeeds after the deadline (fleet 2, nibblets 1): TestExecuteExchange_DirectLateClaimSuccessNeverExecutes. The fake claim ignores its ctx and returns success after the deadline. The executor is never called, and the row is finalized failed.
A slow save (fleet 3): TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineNotMovedBySlowSave. With a 250 ms save, the exec deadline stays at the pre-save deadline.
Each new test was proven with a probe, reverted afterwards with the tree clean:
the Azure exec back on DetachedWithTimeout fails the Azure anchored test;
recomputing the deadline after beginDirectExchange fails DirectExecDeadlineNotMovedBySlowSave and ...AnchoredBeforeSave.
The slow-save test passes -count=5, and go test ./internal/api/ passes as a whole.
Follow-up for nibblets' non-blocking note (a claim that succeeds late keeps the idempotency key for 15 minutes, so a retry gets a misleading 409): I'll file it separately.

Delta from my CHANGES REQUESTED at 02b11b98. The range is one commit, 27ba6a7, which is test-only (internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go +107). The production code is unchanged from what I verified correct at 02b11b98.
My two findings: fixed
The post-claim deadline check is now pinned.
slowClaimStore.lateSuccess waits for the claim context to end, then reports success through context.WithoutCancel. That's the store answering just after the deadline, which is the branch the earlier fake never reached.
TestExecuteExchange_DirectLateClaimSuccessNeverExecutes asserts the executor is never called and the row is finalized failed.
The Azure half is now pinned.
TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave (a 150 ms claim on a 400 ms budget) asserts the Azure ExecuteExchange context deadline is anchored before the save, not at claim-end + budget, and is within 1 ms of the claim's own deadline (one shared deadline).
TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes asserts context.DeadlineExceeded, no ExecuteExchange call (the mock has no expectation, so a call would fail), and a failed row.
Also added:TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineNotMovedBySlowSave, a 250 ms save on a 600 ms budget. It asserts the exec deadline doesn't include the save time, which pins "deadline taken before the save".
Probes (re-run locally at this SHA, scoped -run on ./internal/api/, under heavy-review-2)
The baseline passes.
P2 (delete if err == nil && claimCtx.Err() != nil {…}): now killed by TestExecuteExchange_DirectLateClaimSuccessNeverExecutes. It survived at 02b11b98.
P4 (only the Azure exec back on DetachedWithTimeout(ctx, riExchangeExecutionTimeout)): now killed by TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave. It survived at 02b11b98.
P1 and P3 were already killed at 02b11b98, and the production code they mutate is unchanged.
My non-blocking note stands as a possible follow-up: a late-succeeding claim holds the 15-minute idempotency key, so a retry gets a misleading 409.
CI at this SHA:CI - Build & Test run 42414238284, pre-commit run 42414238323 and Frontend build (PR) run 42414238591 all completed successfully. The PR is 1 behind main, so it needs an update before merge if the branch protection is strict. Review only, not merging.
Delta review of the fix round since my CHANGES REQUESTED at 02b11b9. The delta is one test-only commit, 27ba6a7, adding 107 lines to internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go. CI is green at this head, including Unit Tests (run 42414238284), and the PR is CLEAN. I re-ran my five probes on this head, each in a fresh export, with the scoped -run over ./internal/api/:
Finding 1 (Azure bound): closed.azureFreshTimeout now fails TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave. TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes pins that the claim deadline refuses before ExecuteExchange is called and that the row is failed.
Finding 2 (post-claim check): closed.noPostClaimCheck now fails TestExecuteExchange_DirectLateClaimSuccessNeverExecutes. The lateSuccess store waits for ctx.Done() and then claims on context.WithoutCancel(ctx), so a claim that commits after the deadline is exercised.
Finding 3 (anchored before the save): closed for the provider call, the bound the runbook relies on.awsFreshTimeout now also fails TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineNotMovedBySlowSave, which uses a 250ms save. noClaimDeadline still fails both earlier tests.
Non-blocking residual, no change required. My deadlineAfterSave probe still passes. It recomputes the deadline inside beginDirectExchange for the claim only, after the save, while the provider call keeps the caller's pre-save deadline. ...NotMovedBySlowSave asserts only the provider-call deadline. That is safe: a claim allowed to end later than the provider-call deadline makes the provider call start on an already-expired context. The AWS quote, which runs before the accept, then fails and is recorded failed, and Azure's ExecuteExchange cannot start. If you want the claim pinned too, add one line to that test: assert.WithinDuration(t, execDeadline, store.claimDeadline, time.Millisecond).
The new helpers stay test-only: the SaveRIExchangeDirectExecution override and azureSlowClaimHandler are defined in the _test.go file. Production code is unchanged since my review at 02b11b9.
… not a timing slack
The deadline tests took a time.Now() before the handler and allowed a fixed
slack, so a runner pause longer than the slack failed a correct handler.
Record the save start and claim return in the fake store and compare the
exec deadline against them instead.
Refs #1840

Delta from my approval at 27ba6a76. The range is one commit, 7374838, which is test-only (internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go +23/-13).
The timing slack is gone.slowClaimStore now records saveStartedAt (at save entry, before saveDelay) and claimReturnedAt. Each test compares against those instead of time.Now() plus 50 or 100 ms:
"Anchored before the save" asserts !execDeadline. After(saveStartedAt + budget). This is exact: the handler takes time.Now() for its deadline before the save starts, so the correct code always satisfies it, and an anchor taken after the save or the claim always breaks it.
The slow-save test asserts !execDeadline. After(saveStartedAt + budget). A post-save anchor exceeds that by the 250 ms delay.
This settles CodeRabbit's flake concern without weakening anything: both bounds are now tighter than before.
Probes, re-run at this SHA (-run scoped on ./internal/api/, under heavy-review-2). The baseline passes, and -count=5 of the deadline and late-claim tests passes. All four are killed:
P1, the AWS exec on a fresh timeout after the claim: …AnchoredBeforeSave and …NotMovedBySlowSave;
P2, the post-claim check deleted: …LateClaimSuccessNeverExecutes;
P3, the claim with no deadline: …AnchoredBeforeSave;
P4, only the Azure exec on a fresh timeout: TestExecuteAzureExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave.
CI at this SHA: when I posted, pre-commit run 42416557748 and Frontend build (PR) run 42416557474 had completed successfully, and CI - Build & Test run 42416557389 was still running. It must be green before merge. Review only, not merging.
Delta from my approval at 27ba6a7: one test-only commit, 7374838, changing internal/api/ri_exchange_audit_test.go (+23/-13). Production code is unchanged. CI is green at this head, including Unit Tests (run 42416557389), and the PR is CLEAN.
The new bounds are exact, with no timing slack.
The handler takes the deadline before the save, so deadline <= saveStartedAt + budget holds with no slack.
Anchoring the deadline after the claim would give deadline >= claimReturnedAt + budget, which the strict Before fails. claimReturnedAt is set in the claim's defer, before beginDirectExchange returns.
Both timestamps are written by the goroutine that runs the handler, under s.mu, before the test reads them, so there is no race.
Re-run at this head, in a fresh export:
awsFreshTimeout fails ...AnchoredBeforeSave and ...NotMovedBySlowSave.
azureFreshTimeout fails the Azure test.
noClaimDeadline and noPostClaimCheck are still killed.
-count=5 of the deadline, claim-outliving and late-claim tests is green.
The deadlineAfterSave residual, which recomputes only the claim's deadline, is unchanged and stays non-blocking for the reasons in my previous comment.

Summary
Closes #1840 (p1). It was found in the plan review for #1836, and has been live on main since #1838.
Problem. For a direct RI exchange, the audit row's
created_atis taken under the spend lock in the save. Then the idempotency claim ran on the request context, which has no deadline in HTTP-server mode, and the pool has no acquire timeout. Only after the claim did the 4-minute execution budget start. With an exhausted pool, the AWS accept could therefore be sent atcreated_at+ any wait + 4 minutes, past the settle runbook's assumption that asubmittedrow older than 5 minutes is no longer in flight. An operator following the runbook could release an RI whose exchange then goes through.Fix.
time.Now().Add(riExchangeExecutionTimeout).context.WithDeadline(ctx, deadline). A claim that times out, or that answers only after the deadline, takes the existing failure path: the row is finalizedfailed("not submitted to the provider") and never reaches the provider.ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline(ctx, deadline)instead of a freshDetachedWithTimeout. So the call ends at most aboutriExchangeExecutionTimeoutaftercreated_at, whatever the claim or lock wait. (The deadline is taken before the save, so a slow spend-lock wait also counts against it, which is the conservative direction.)beginDirectExchange, so it gets the same bound. Nothing else changes: the thirdDetachedWithTimeoutcall site, which isn't a direct execute, is unchanged.runbooks/ri-exchange-direct-execution-settle.mdraises thesubmittedage from 5 to 10 minutes (owner decision Q2 on feat(ri-exchange): list and resolve stuck direct-execution rows (follow-up to #1829) #1836). The bound is now about 4 minutes fromcreated_at, which leaves margin for clock skew and the finalize save.Tests
TestExecuteExchange_DirectExecDeadlineAnchoredBeforeSave: with a slow claim, the exec context's deadline is the pre-save deadline, not claim end + timeout.TestExecuteExchange_DirectClaimOutlivingDeadlineNeverExecutes: a claim that outlives the deadline never calls the executor, and the row is finalizedfailed.executionTimeoutOverrideon the handler.riExchangeExecutionTimeoutstays a const.Verification
