fix(api): keep group details out of user-write refusals for callers without view:groups - #1800
A refused user create or update returns the auth error text as-is, through mapAuthError. For three refusals that text names groups and permissions:
a contradictory group combination;
a grant above the caller's permission ceiling, or a permission that isn't grantable;
self-escalation.
A caller who may not view groups shouldn't learn group names or the permission split from a refusal.
Separately, when the grant ceiling can't resolve the acting user's permissions or account scope, the refusal wraps the store error, so database error text can reach the caller.
What
A new mapUserWriteError maps those refusals as before (400 for the combination, 403 for the grant refusals), but checks view:groups first. Callers without it get a fixed message: "this group combination is not allowed", or "you cannot grant one or more of the requested groups".
Callers with view:groups, and the admin API key, keep the detailed message.
A permission check that errors counts as "may not view groups".
Status codes are unchanged.
The grant ceiling logs a store error server-side and returns only the fixed "could not resolve" refusal.
Tests
handler_users_test.go adds cases for each refusal, both with and without view:groups. It also covers a failing permission check and a user API key judged by its own effective permissions. self_account_scope_dispatch_test.go is updated for the own-membership refusal. group_ceiling_store_error_test.go and handler_ceiling_store_error_test.go check that a failing store's error text appears in neither the error nor the response. The new cases fail on main.
Permission-related user creation and update failures now show generic messages when the caller cannot view groups, rather than exposing group, permission, or account details.
Callers who can view groups continue to receive diagnostic details. Contradictory group selections continue to return an HTTP 400 response.
Store errors during permission checks no longer expose connection or database details in refusal messages.
… without view:groups
A refused view-only plus write-capable group combination now names the
groups and their split only when the caller holds view:groups. Other
callers get "this group combination is not allowed". Applies to user
create and update; the admin API key keeps the detailed message.

… the caller is a user API key
Cover a permission check that returns an error (treated as not allowed to view
groups) and a user API key judged by its own effective permissions.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…callers without view:groups
Extend mapUserWriteError so a user create/update refused by the permission
ceiling returns a generic 403 unless the caller may view groups. The status
codes are unchanged; callers with view:groups and the admin API key keep the
detailed message.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…without view:groups
Map a refused change to the caller's own group membership through the same
view:groups check as the other group grant refusals, so a caller without it
gets the generic 403 and callers with it keep the detail.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the grant ceiling could not resolve the acting user's permissions
or account scope, the refusal wrapped the store error, so database
connection text could reach the caller through the 403 message.
Log the store error server-side and return only the fixed "could not
resolve" refusal. The check still fails closed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
User creation and update refusals now limit diagnostic details based on the caller’s view:groups permission. Permission and account-scope resolution failures are logged, while returned ceiling errors omit underlying store error details.
Permission and account-scope resolution failures are logged. Returned ceiling refusals no longer include underlying store error details. Tests check that the errors still match ErrPermissionCeiling and omit connection details.
User API refusal mapping internal/api/handler_users.go, internal/api/handler_users_test.go, internal/api/handler_ceiling_store_error_test.go, internal/server/self_account_scope_dispatch_test.go
User create and update failures use mapUserWriteError. Contradictory-group errors remain 400, and permission-related refusals remain 403. Responses include diagnostic details only when the caller can view groups; failed permission checks use generic messages. Tests cover these responses and store-error detail suppression.
The change limits refusal details while preserving response statuses. Strengthening the self-edit test would improve regression protection, but no merge-blocking defect was identified.

Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts

Cold review at this SHA. Nothing blocks the merge.
Findings (none blocking)
Low, pre-existing, outside this PR: internal/api/handler_groups.go:73-85 (mapGroupAuthError) still returns the full auth error text whoever the caller is. A caller with update:groups or create:groups but without view:groups can see a group's name and its conflicting-member count in the update refusal (internal/auth/group_combination.go:250). Suggest a follow-up applying the same view:groups gate there. The store-error part of the group path is already fixed here, because group_ceiling.go no longer wraps the store error, and TestHandler_writes_CeilingStoreErrorOmitsDetailForGroupViewer covers createGroup.
Nit: for a self-edit by a caller without view:groups, the plain ErrSelfEscalation text names no group, yet it is now replaced by "you cannot grant one or more of the requested groups" (internal/api/handler_users.go:95-97). That reads oddly for your own membership. Optional: give self-escalation its own generic message.
What I attacked
Response body per principal, compared with main. On main every principal got the detailed text. At this SHA:
a session without view:groups gets the fixed text;
a session with view:groups gets the detailed text;
the admin API key gets the detailed text;
a user API key is judged by the key's effective permissions.
Status codes are unchanged: 400 for a refused combination, 403 for the grant-ceiling, not-grantable and self-escalation refusals.
Sentinel constructors (group_ceiling.go, service_user.go, group_combination.go): all reach users through mapUserWriteError. The "failed to load group" errors carry no sentinel and become a generic 500.
Other mapAuthError callers (getUser, deleteUser, setupAdmin): none produces these sentinels.
Logs: the new error logs stay server-side and are not returned.
Tenant scope: the check is the unscoped view:groups, the same check GET /api/groups uses, so a refusal reveals nothing that listing groups doesn't already show. It is evaluated on the acting principal, not the target user.
Fail closed: any permission-check error gives the generic message, and the refusal itself is still returned.
Frontend and E2E: grepping frontend/src, frontend/tests-e2e and tests/ finds no dependency on the old refusal strings.
Results (local, macOS, throttled)
go test ./internal/api/ ./internal/auth/ ./internal/server/: pass.
-tags integration: auth and server full, pass. api scoped with -run 'User|Group|Ceiling|Scope|Escalat|Permission|Auth|APIKey', pass.
Mutation probes, in a scratch copy, each reverted:
(a) always return the detailed text: fails ContradictoryGroupsMessageDependsOnViewGroups, GroupGrantRefusalMessageDependsOnViewGroups, SelfEditRefusalMessageDependsOnViewGroups and others.
(b) invert the view:groups decision: fails the same tests, plus the server dispatch tests.
(c) count a permission-check error as allowed: fails ContradictoryGroupsGenericWhenViewGroupsCheckErrors.
(d) restore the wrapped store error: fails TestGrantCeilingPermissions_StoreErrorOmitsDetail, TestGrantCeilingAccounts_StoreErrorOmitsDetail and CeilingStoreErrorOmitsDetailForGroupViewer.
CI: everything passes except Security Scanning and CI Success, which fail on the known fleet-wide govulncheck advisory, unrelated to this change.
Gaps: the api integration suite was scoped, not run in full. Nothing was run against a deployed environment. The user API key and admin key cases were checked through handler mocks and code reading, not live HTTP.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
mapUserWriteError covers the four refusals whose text carries group or permission detail: the group combination, the ceiling, not grantable, and self-escalation. Only the user create and update paths return them.
The other mapAuthError callers can't return these four. They are get user, delete user and admin setup (handler_users.go, handler_auth.go).
Group endpoints map these errors separately, and their callers already hold group permissions.
Status codes are unchanged.
Permission check
The added view:groups check uses requirePermission. It only reads and has no audit side effect.
Callers with view:groups and the admin API key keep the detailed text. A user API key is judged by its own effective permissions.
A failed check falls back to the generic text.
Ceiling store errors: the store error text is now only logged server-side. The refusal names only the step that failed.
Mutation probes (each fails at least one test)
skip the view:groups check (always detailed);
always generic (callers with permission lose the detail);
re-wrap the store error on the permissions path;
re-wrap the store error on the account-scope path;
remove self-escalation from the masked set.
Local verification (macOS, at this SHA, throttled)
Build and go vet -tags integration are OK.
Unit tests pass for api, auth and server.
go test -tags integration, scoped to user, ceiling, group and escalation tests in the same packages, passes.
golangci-lint v2.10.1 reports 0 issues.
The govulncheck failure is the fleet-wide compress advisory, being fixed in #1805, not this change.
The remaining group also grants view:groups, so this test passes when the mapper checks the rejected memberships. Return independent user copies from the mock store, remove view:groups from the remaining group, and keep the detail assertion.
