test(api): guard request-to-store adapters against dropped fields - #1797
Part of #19: reflection-based field-drop guards for three internal/api request-to-store adapters. The internal/auth adapters and the audit document are not in this PR.
What changed
refactor(api): extract registrationFromRequest: moves the registration request-to-store copy out of the handler into a function the test can call. No behavior change.
test(api): guard request-to-store adapters against dropped fields: for each adapter, the test sets every JSON field of the API request in turn and asserts the store struct changes. A field that does not reach the store fails the test unless it is in that adapter's allowlist with a reason. An allowlisted field that starts reaching the store also fails, so the list cannot go stale.
cloudAccountFromRequest: no allowlist.
registrationFromRequest: credential_type, credential_payload (encrypted and attached by submitRegistration, not the mapper).
Apart from description (#1776), these three adapters drop no fields.
Verification
Deletion probes: removing the ContactEmail, AWSRoleARN or MaxStepCommitment copy line made the matching test fail.
go test ./internal/api/ (scoped to these tests) and go test -tags integration ./internal/api/ (scoped) pass; golangci-lint reports 0 issues; all commit hooks ran.
Not covered
The internal/auth adapters (APIUpdateGroupRequest, APICreateUserRequest, APICreateGroupRequest), the remaining internal/api handlers, and docs/internal/api-adapter-audit.md stay open on #19.
Pure mapper from RegistrationRequest to AccountRegistration so it can be
unit tested. No behaviour change.

Reflection test per adapter (CloudAccountRequest, RegistrationRequest,
PlanRequest): each json field must change the converted struct unless it is
allowlisted with a reason, and a stale allowlist entry fails.

Walkthrough
The registration submission flow now uses a helper to build a pending registration from request fields. New tests check field reachability in the cloud-account, registration, and purchase-plan converters, with allowlists for fields handled separately.
Changes: Request Mapping
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Registration mapping and field-reachability checks internal/api/handler_registrations.go, internal/api/adapter_field_drop_test.go
submitRegistration uses registrationFromRequest to construct a pending registration. Tests check whether request fields change converter output and allow documented exceptions for fields handled elsewhere.
Issue 19 — Requests field-drop tests and documented exceptions. This PR adds tests for three adapters; the remaining audit is outside its scope.
Issue 1776 — Reports dropped plan descriptions and ignored target accounts during plan updates. The PR tests the plan mapper but does not change update behavior.
Issue 151 — Reports absent values being confused with zero values. The PR tests cloud-account field mapping but does not establish update behavior.
Issue 1102 — Reports that account updates do not save the provider. The PR tests conversion but does not establish update behavior.

The change is mergeable with normal checks. Direct credential-payload assertions would improve test isolation, but existing handler coverage already detects the identified regressions.

Check the credential payload directly.
If the mapper copies CredentialPayload into RegCredentialPayload, the allowlist assertion still passes because JSON omits that field. Add a direct mapper assertion.

Second cold review. The refactor is behaviour-preserving, and the guard catches ordinary drops, but it has two blind spots, one of them on the security-sensitive allowlisted field.
Verified
No behaviour change:registrationFromRequest (handler_registrations.go:57-82) copies the same 19 fields as the removed inline literal, with the same token and "pending" defaults. It still runs after validateRegistrationRequest(&body), and it has no other callers.
Mutation probes, all caught by the expected subtest:
Fields tagged json:"-" are invisible to the guard.adapter_field_drop_test.go:25 compares the store structs by json.Marshal. A probe that maps RegCredentialPayload: req.CredentialPayload in plaintext still PASSES the credential_payload subtest, and ReferenceToken is hidden the same way. The PR says an allowlisted field that starts reaching the store fails the test, but that is false for exactly the sensitive entry. Compare with reflection (reflect.DeepEqual or go-cmp, ignoring the time fields) instead of JSON.
Untagged exported request fields are skipped.adapter_field_drop_test.go:64 indexes only fields with a non-empty, non-- json tag, but json.Unmarshal still binds an untagged exported field by its Go name. A probe adding an untagged Extra string to CloudAccountRequest runs no subtest and passes. Key on the field name, falling back from the tag.
Non-blocking: a swapped mapping (request field A copied into store field B) still passes. That's outside the "dropped field" claim.
go test -run NoFieldDropped ./internal/api/ passes at head, and the CI checks pass. Scope matches "Part of #19": the auth adapters and the audit doc remain under #19.
registrationFromRequest is a pure move: the same 19 fields and the same token and status. submitRegistration passes the decoded value.
All json-tagged fields are covered. Every field of CloudAccountRequest, RegistrationRequest and PlanRequest has a json tag and none are embedded, so the guard skips none.
Unsupported kinds fail loudly through t.Fatalf.
Mutation probes
Dropping the GCPWIFAudience copy fails TestRegistrationFromRequest_NoFieldDropped.
An allowlist entry for a field that isn't a request field fails the test.
Allowlisting a mapped field (contact_email) fails with "now reaches the target".
Scope note (not a blocker): the guard catches drops, not misrouting. A field copied into the wrong store field still changes the output, so the test passes. That's outside this PR's stated goal.
Local verification (macOS, at this SHA, throttled)
Build and go vet -tags integration are OK.
go test ./internal/api/ passes, and go test -tags integration ./internal/api/, scoped to these adapters, passes.
golangci-lint v2.10.1 reports 0 issues on ./internal/api/....
The guard compared store structs through JSON, so json:"-" fields such as
the registration credential payload were invisible to it, and it skipped
untagged exported request fields that encoding/json still binds by name.
It now compares with reflect.DeepEqual after zeroing timestamps and keys
each field by its JSON name or Go name.

Fix round at 04e2785 for the CHANGES REQUESTED at ebaa634:
json:"-" fields: outputs are now compared with reflect.DeepEqual after zeroing time.Time values, so store fields such as RegCredentialPayload are seen. Probe: mapping credential_payload into the store in plaintext now fails RegistrationFromRequest_NoFieldDropped/credential_payload, because the allowlisted field changed the output.
Untagged fields: request fields are keyed by their JSON name, or by their Go name when untagged, matching what encoding/json binds. Fields tagged json:"-" and unexported fields are skipped. Probe: an untagged ExtraProbe field on CloudAccountRequest with no mapping fails CloudAccountFromRequest_NoFieldDropped/ExtraProbe.
go test -run NoFieldDropped ./internal/api/ passes, and lint reports 0 issues. The swapped-mapping case stays out of scope, as you noted.
Delta review since my approval at ebaa634. The delta is one commit, test-only, in adapter_field_drop_test.go.
Checked
Comparison. Outputs are now compared with reflect.DeepEqual after zeroTimes, replacing the JSON snapshot. Store fields tagged json:"-" are therefore visible: AccountRegistration.ReferenceToken and RegCredentialPayload.
zeroTimes walks pointers, interfaces, structs, slices and arrays. It zeroes only settable time.Time values, so nothing changes falsely between two conversions.
None of the three store types (CloudAccount, AccountRegistration, PurchasePlan) has a func, chan or NaN-able field that could make DeepEqual report a change that didn't happen. PurchasePlan.Services is a map, which DeepEqual compares by value.
Field keys.requestFieldName keys each field the way encoding/json binds it: the tag name, or the Go name when untagged. It skips json:"-" and unexported fields.
Probes (each a temporary edit)
Dropping the GCPWIFAudience copy fails .../gcp_wif_audience ("dropped by the converter").
A mapper that copies CredentialPayload into the json:"-"RegCredentialPayload fails .../credential_payload ("now reaches the target"). The old JSON comparison missed this case.
An untagged exported RegistrationRequest field fails .../Untagged ("dropped").
Control: blanking the ReferenceToken copy passes, as expected, because the token is not a request field.
Local verification (macOS, at this SHA, throttled):go vet is OK, the NoFieldDropped tests and go test ./internal/api/ pass, and golangci-lint v2.10.1 reports 0 issues on ./internal/api/....
Delta over my CHANGES at ebaa634. It's one test-only commit (internal/api/adapter_field_drop_test.go), with no merge from main.
Earlier findings
json:"-" fields were invisible: fixed. The test now uses reflect.DeepEqual after zeroTimes (:18-50,114).
Untagged fields were skipped: fixed. requestFieldName (:52-66) keys by tag or Go name and skips - and unexported fields.
Attacks
Time zeroing can't hide a drop today. No request struct has a time field, and setDistinct fails loudly on a struct. A future field that drives only a time would still fail as "dropped".
Unexported, interface and map-held times aren't zeroed. That could only cause false failures, never false passes.
Pointers:DeepEqual follows them.
Nil vs empty: the converter is deterministic, so this has no effect.
Approvals at this SHA: claude-qa-ui-3 and claude-darling (darling's delta covers the CHANGES REQUESTED at ebaa634).
CI is green at this SHA, there are 0 unresolved threads, and the merge state is CLEAN.
Combo re-test (local, macOS, throttled): this head merged onto main 29b1279. go build ./..., go vet, and the ./internal/api/ unit tests pass. Integration tests (-tags integration -run 'Registration|CloudAccount|Plan') pass.
