Summary

Three high-severity frontend fixes, one commit each.

Part of #713 (the inline error and Retry; scoping the fetch to the chips needs backend filter parameters and stays open on #713)
Closes #700
Closes #701

Issue Commit Fix
#713 9dc59dfc A failed upcoming-purchases fetch no longer renders "No upcoming scheduled purchases". It shows an inline error with a Retry that refetches only that widget. The issue also asked to scope the request to the provider/account chips, which is not possible from the frontend alone: getUpcomingPurchases (internal/api/handler_dashboard.go) takes no filter parameters and scopes by session.
#700 d8e42c19 Per-service savings bars use a stable colour per service (serviceBarColor: fixed slots for the common services, a name hash for the rest) instead of SERVICE_BAR_COLORS[i % n] by rank. The legend shows three neutral swatches matching the stacked shades instead of the first bar's colour. At 390 px the x-axis no longer skips service labels.
#701 2b4d2c62 The purchase modal is titled Review Purchase. The confirm button names the money: "Send for Approval ($X upfront on approval)" or "Execute Purchase Now ($X charged today)". The confirm dialogs' upfront stat band was already fixed by #781. executeButtonLabel / executeConfirmLabel in commitmentSummary.ts replace the label literals duplicated in app.ts and recommendations.ts.

Not changed: the fan-out confirm ("Send all for approval") and the radio label "Send for Approval (default)".

Tests

Each fix has a jest test that failed before it and passes after, plus a mutation probe:

tests-e2e/recommendations.spec.ts now expects the dialog name "Review Purchase".

Verification evidence is posted as PR comments.

A failed /api/dashboard/upcoming fetch fell through to
renderUpcomingPurchases([]) and displayed "No upcoming scheduled
purchases", hiding upcoming spend. Render an inline error with a Retry
button that refetches only the upcoming widget. The endpoint takes no
scope parameters (scoping is server-side by session), so no request
change is made.

Closes #713

Bars were coloured by rank index, so a service changed colour whenever
the ranking moved after a refresh, and the legend swatches (taken from the
first bar) matched only one service. Colour each bar from a stable
per-service map (fixed slots for known services, name hash otherwise) and
give the legend neutral swatches that mirror the three stacked layers.
Stop Chart.js from dropping x-axis service labels on narrow screens by
disabling autoSkip and allowing rotation.

Closes #700

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The purchase modal was titled "Configure Purchase" and its confirm
dialog button read "Send for approval" / "Execute Purchase Now" with no
amount, while the modal button used different casing, so the verb and
the money involved were easy to miss. Retitle the modal "Review
Purchase", and make the confirm button use the same verb as the modal
button plus the total upfront amount ("Send for Approval ($X upfront on
approval)" / "Execute Purchase Now ($X charged today)"). The mode label
literals duplicated across app.ts and recommendations.ts now come from
one helper.

📝 Walkthrough

The dashboard now shows upcoming-purchase load errors with a widget-only retry. Savings-chart colors and legend swatches have changed. Purchase confirmation uses mode-specific labels that include the upfront amount, and the modal title is now “Review Purchase.”

Changes: Dashboard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Upcoming-purchases error and retry
frontend/src/dashboard.ts, frontend/src/__tests__/dashboard.test.ts
A failed upcoming-purchases request now displays an inline error and Retry action. Retry reloads purchases without refetching the summary.
Savings chart colors and labels
frontend/src/dashboard.ts, frontend/src/__tests__/dashboard.test.ts
Service bars use stable name-based colors. Legend layers use distinct neutral swatches, and service labels remain visible on narrow screens.

Purchase Confirmation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared purchase action labels
frontend/src/commitmentSummary.ts, frontend/src/recommendations.ts
Shared helpers generate mode-specific execute-button and confirmation labels. Recommendation controls use the execute-button helper.
Confirmation flow and dialog title
frontend/src/app.ts, frontend/src/index.html, frontend/src/__tests__/purchase-modal-submit.test.ts, frontend/tests-e2e/recommendations.spec.ts
The confirmation flow calculates commitment totals and uses mode-specific labels. Cancellation and completion restore the appropriate button text. The dialog title changes to “Review Purchase,” with tests updated for the new labels and title.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #713, #700, and #701. The dashboard tests, purchase-modal tests, E2E title update, shared label helpers, and label refactoring directly support those fixes. No unrelated implementation change is established by the reviewed summary.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

#713 is only partially met. The dashboard now keeps the upcoming-purchases failure separate, renders an inline error, and provides a widget-only Retry. The added dashboard test covers the retry behavior. However, the request still calls api.getUpcomingPurchases() without provider or account scope. #713 also requires the selected chip scope. #700 is met by stable name-based service colours, matching neutral legend swatches, retained narrow-screen labels, and tests. #701 is met by the Review Purchase title, shared money-bearing action labels, the existing commitment stat band, and tests.

Resolution

Add coordinated API support for provider and account scope, then pass the selected scope to getUpcomingPurchases and test that the request uses it. If the backend contract cannot change in this pull request, split the scope requirement into a follow-up and do not claim full closure of #713.

The per-service colour table listed aliases nothing emits, so the
canonical slugs (cache, search, relational-db, data-warehouse, the
savings-plans-* variants) fell through to the name hash and collided
with other services. Key the table on the slugs the app emits, give
each service family its own slot with legacy twins (ec2/compute,
rds/relational-db, ...) sharing it, and send only unknown slugs to the
hash over spare slots. Replace the palette's second green with pink and
give the legend swatches a border so the pale Upside swatch meets 3:1
non-text contrast.

Part of #700

The inline error for a failed upcoming-purchases load was silent to
screen readers, and activating Retry removed the focused button so
keyboard focus fell to the page body. Give the error role="alert" and
move focus to the upcoming container (tabindex=-1) when Retry starts.

Merge gate at aeb8c8cc45bd4e2ec2c322f786e70179c10d88df

Two independent reviewers (cold brief, non-author) both approve aeb8c8cc.

Review 1 (money UI and #713)

Pass 1 (2b4d2c62): APPROVE.

Pass 2 (aeb8c8cc): APPROVE. Probes killed: the relational-db mapping removed, container.focus() removed.

Review 2 (chart, accessibility, tests)

Pass 1 (2b4d2c62): REQUEST_CHANGES.

  • The colour table keyed aliases nothing emits, so the canonical cache and search collided with compute, and relational-db with elasticache.
  • Savings Plans variants hashed to different slots.
  • Two near-identical greens.
  • The legend swatch was at ~1.5:1 contrast.
  • The fix(frontend): failed upcoming purchases fetch renders as empty state #713 error had no role="alert", and focus was lost after Retry.

Fixes:

  • 80ad2a55:
    • Slots 0-6 are keyed on real slug families: compute/ec2/vm; relational-db/rds/sql/cloudsql; cache/elasticache/redis/memorystore; all Savings Plans spellings; search/opensearch; data-warehouse/redshift; memorydb.
    • Unknown slugs hash only into spare slots 7-9.
    • Slot 9 is now pink.
    • The swatch border is #546e7a (~5.4:1).
  • aeb8c8cc: role="alert" on the error, and Retry focuses the widget container.

Pass 2 (aeb8c8cc): APPROVE.

  • The earlier collisions are gone.
  • aks and gce are not emitted by non-test code.
  • The hash fallback is guarded by a test.
  • Remaining nit: the x-axis tick config has no test. The chart is capped at 10 labels.

Local verification (macOS, exact head)

  • npm ci, npm run build, npm run lint (0 errors) and npx jest pass: 109 suites, 3473 passed, 1 skipped.
  • The implementer ran Playwright (execute-now-warning, recommendations, upcoming-purchases-layout, page-overflow): 39 passed.
  • Screenshots of the upcoming error, the savings chart and the purchase confirm at 1440 and 390 were reviewed by me and both reviewers.

Threads: none open. CodeRabbit is waived as a merge gate.
