OpenCode Terminal UI

OpenCode Efficient

This public repository is based on anomalyco/opencode, currently tracking its dev branch. It adds an opt-in state execution mode inspired by SKILL.state.

What Changes

Default OpenCode sends the projected conversation history on every model turn:

flowchart LR
  A[Full transcript] --> B[LLM]
  B --> C[Tool]
  C --> A
Loading

State mode keeps the transcript for UI and audit, but sends the model only a compact state snapshot and latest observation:

flowchart LR
  A[State snapshot] --> B[LLM]
  O[Latest observation] --> B
  B --> P[Validated state patch]
  P --> S[(SQLite session state)]
  B --> T[Tool action]
  T --> O
Loading
history mode: transcript -> prompt -> tool -> transcript
state mode: state + observation -> action + patch -> tool -> observation

State mode is opt-in. Existing agents and sessions keep history-based behavior.

Configuration

{
  "agent": {
    "build": {
      "execution": "state",
      "state_schema": {
        "type": "object",
        "required": ["goal", "next_step"],
        "properties": {
          "goal": { "type": "string" },
          "next_step": { "type": "string" },
          "active_files": {
            "type": "array",
            "items": { "type": "string" }
          },
          "failed_attempts": {
            "type": "array",
            "items": { "type": "string" }
          }
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

Each tool call carries a validated state_patch. The patch is committed after successful tool execution. state_patch is removed from actual tool arguments and durable tool transcript.

Example observation:

{
  "tool": "read",
  "status": "success",
  "input": { "filePath": "src/app.ts" },
  "result": { "output": "...file contents..." }
}

Result observations are bounded and omit UI/media duplicates. Action inputs remain available, so repeated read, bash, and write calls stay distinguishable.

Build And Download

Pushes run typechecks and build platform artifacts through GitHub Actions. A tag creates a public GitHub Release with downloadable archives and binaries:

git tag v1.0.0
git push origin v1.0.0

The workflow is in .github/workflows/build.yml. Artifacts are published for Windows x64, Linux x64, and macOS arm64/x64 when supported by the upstream build script.

Attribution

This is an independent fork. It is not affiliated with or maintained by the OpenCode team. Upstream code and trademarks remain subject to their original license and project terms.

Installation

# YOLO
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash

# Package managers
npm i -g opencode-ai@latest        # or bun/pnpm/yarn
scoop install opencode             # Windows
choco install opencode             # Windows
brew install anomalyco/tap/opencode # macOS and Linux (recommended, always up to date)
brew install opencode # macOS and Linux (official brew formula, updated less)
sudo pacman -S opencode # Arch Linux (Stable)
paru -S opencode-bin # Arch Linux (Latest from AUR)
mise use -g opencode # Any OS
nix run nixpkgs#opencode # or github:anomalyco/opencode for latest dev branch

Tip

Remove versions older than 0.1.x before installing.

Desktop App (BETA)

OpenCode is also available as a desktop application. Download directly from the releases page or opencode.ai/download.

Platform Download
macOS (Apple Silicon) opencode-desktop-mac-arm64.dmg
macOS (Intel) opencode-desktop-mac-x64.dmg
Windows opencode-desktop-windows-x64.exe
Linux .deb, .rpm, or .AppImage
# macOS (Homebrew)
brew install --cask opencode-desktop
# Windows (Scoop)
scoop bucket add extras; scoop install extras/opencode-desktop

Installation Directory

The install script respects the following priority order for the installation path:

  1. $OPENCODE_INSTALL_DIR - Custom installation directory
  2. $XDG_BIN_DIR - XDG Base Directory Specification compliant path
  3. $HOME/bin - Standard user binary directory (if it exists or can be created)
  4. $HOME/.opencode/bin - Default fallback
# Examples
OPENCODE_INSTALL_DIR=/usr/local/bin curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash
XDG_BIN_DIR=$HOME/.local/bin curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash

Agents

OpenCode includes two built-in agents you can switch between with the Tab key.

  • build - Default, full-access agent for development work
  • plan - Read-only agent for analysis and code exploration
    • Denies file edits by default
    • Asks permission before running bash commands
    • Ideal for exploring unfamiliar codebases or planning changes

Also included is a general subagent for complex searches and multistep tasks. This is used internally and can be invoked using @general in messages.
