Explanation of Change

This is a follow-up PR that addresses a gap in our workflow trigger paths. Previously, changes to the artifact workflows would not trigger a new artifact build.

After this change is merged, we will regenerate the Standalone and HybridApp artifacts every time someone edits one of the three existing artifact-related workflows.

Fixed Issues

$ #100503
PROPOSAL:

Tests

This change cannot be tested easily, but it is possible. To verify it, one must copy this workflow to their fork and confirm that it is triggered by a push to main after merging a PR that modifies one of the three artifact workflow files.

An internal engineer can also test it in this repository by creating two branches and triggering the workflow by merging a PR into a new base branch. The second branch must modify one of the artifact workflow files.

Offline tests

QA Steps

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I followed proper code patterns (see Reviewing the code)
    • I verified that comments were added to code that is not self explanatory
    • I verified that any new or modified comments were clear, correct English, and explained "why" the code was doing something instead of only explaining "what" the code was doing.
    • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is grammatically correct in English. It adheres to proper capitalization guidelines (note: only the first word of header/labels should be capitalized), and is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I followed the guidelines as stated in the Review Guidelines
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • If a new CSS style is added I verified that:
    • A similar style doesn't already exist
    • The style can't be created with an existing StyleUtils function (i.e. StyleUtils.getBackgroundAndBorderStyle(theme.componentBG))
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

Overall LGTM, but I posted two discussion points.

# Workflow edits (e.g. the Hermes version resolution) change how artifacts are built without touching patches or the RN version.
if git diff --quiet '${{ github.event.before }}' '${{ github.event.after }}' -- .github/workflows/publishReactNativeArtifacts.yml .github/workflows/publishReactNativeiOSArtifacts.yml .github/workflows/publishReactNativeAndroidArtifacts.yml; then

Maybe it's out of scope of this PR, but what do you think about triggering this on diff of these files:

  • scripts/artifacts-utils/ios/publish/**,
  • .github/actions/composite/fetchReactNativePrebuild/action.yml,
  • .github/actions/composite/getXcodeVersion/action.yml?

They affect the build too, but don't trigger rebuilding of artifacts.

This is a very good point! I'll verify those suggestions on Monday. Possibly we don't need to rely on .github/actions/composite/getXcodeVersion/action.yml, but I'm not sure about other paths you mentioned

@mikolajpochec so I tried to walk this path, but it turned out to be really complicated. I extended my thinking about this feature a bit as well so I will share all my reasoning for clarification:

  • If we trigger builds based on changes in workflow files, should we include them in patches hash as well?

    • In my opinion, no, because those changes in 99% do not break build and what's more still we look for the matching build by traversing published packages from newest to oldest so newest matching will be picked. Also, I think we even don't have a trivial way to match that information on client side(build that consumes artifacts) reliably.
  • I decided not to rely on toolchain versions (e.g. .github/actions/composite/getXcodeVersion/action.yml) as a trigger condition, because if the build succeeds for a given target architecture, the build system should have no issues linking those artifacts correctly into the app no matter which toolchain version it uses locally.

  • Historically issue with Hermes ABI mismatch was the first one that caused silent problems in builds using artifacts. This is project dependency so I decided to implement extra check here: [No QA] Implement Hermes version check for our custom artifacts #103317. This reasoning does not apply to CI workflows or utility scripts as they're not dependencies in terms of Gradle and Xcode builds

  • Nevertheless, if issues like the Hermes ABI mismatch arise and we need to adjust our CI artifacts pipeline in order to fix it, we would like to trigger new build automatically for such changes. This should be covered by additional trigger paths that include the files the workflows depend on. However, for the reasons mentioned above, I believe this should be handled only in the entry workflow file and nowhere else.

Obviously, these safeguards might not be sufficient in the future if subtle upstream changes affect how artifacts are built, but this is something we cannot entirely avoid in our custom pipeline. The iOS side of things is still very immature, and upstream is expected to drop CocoaPods in the near future. On the other hand, the Android side is very stable, and we’ve never had any issues with it.

PR description is out of date

The Explanation of Change still mentions only "the three existing artifact-related workflows". Since e27f58d it also covers fetchReactNativePrebuild/action.yml and scripts/artifacts-utils/ios/publish/**.

didWorkflowsChange no longer matches its scope

The step now also checks fetchReactNativePrebuild/action.yml and the iOS publish Gradle project, but its name, id and output still say "workflows". Line 167 then logs "a change to the publishing workflows" when the trigger was the Gradle project.

Rename to something like didPublishPipelineChange / DID_PUBLISH_PIPELINE_CHANGE, and update the reference in the comment at line 44.

A git diff error is treated as a change

git diff --quiet exits 128 on failure, e.g. a missing commit. Inside an if, bash -e doesn't apply, so the error falls into the else branch.

Expected: the step fails with the git error.
Actual: it logs "Detected changes in the artifact publishing workflows" and starts a full rebuild of all four jobs.

Suggested Fix: capture the exit code and fail when it's above 1.

Review

I found no blocking issues. The new paths trigger the workflow, and a change in any of them forces a full rebuild of both targets. Republishing is safe because getNewPatchedRNVersion.sh increments the patch iteration each run.

Notes
  1. The git diff works with the shallow checkout. Line 66 checks out before, and lines 84-85 fetch after. Both commits are local, so the tree diff at line 132 succeeds. This also means the exit-128 case raised in review is unlikely to happen: if either commit were missing, an earlier step would already fail. A guard is still cheap, but I don't think it blocks merging.
  2. Naming nit. I agree with renaming didWorkflowsChange / DID_WORKFLOWS_CHANGE. The step now also covers the prebuild action and the iOS publish Gradle project.
  3. Optional: getXcodeVersion. .github/actions/composite/getXcodeVersion/action.yml pins the Xcode toolchain that builds the iOS slices, and it is not in the list. Leaving it out is reasonable if older-Xcode artifacts stay compatible after a bump. Add it only if you want artifacts rebuilt on every Xcode bump.
  4. Expected side effect. Merging this PR edits publishReactNativeArtifacts.yml, so it will start a full rebuild on main. This also applies to any later edit, including comment-only edits.
