Hi! We're a Brazilian team working on a full Portuguese translation of Valkyrie
Profile, and we'd like to ship it as a mod for your port rather than as a
separate patched disc. Wanted to introduce the project and check whether that's
something you'd be open to before we build anything against your pipeline.
Where we are
The project has been running for a while and already has working tooling. Four
people are directly involved: two developers, a dub director, and myself.
I built the text, organisation and dubbing tools. Voice actors and other
contributors orbit the project as well.
Extraction and reinsertion. A suite that extracts and rebuilds
VALKYRIE.BIN and the game's container archives, with separate handling for TIM
images, audio, text and fonts. Working, with a few rough edges left. The
containers have no official name that we know of, so we call them VPF (Valkyrie
Profile Files); same for the .vptxt and .vpmaptxt extensions below. Those
are our labels, not anything from the original game.
Asset indexing. The game ships its files unnamed, in numbered folders and
subfolders, roughly 6,000 assets across about 4,500 packages. We wrote an
indexer that
scans, classifies by type (.vptxt text, .vpmaptxt map text, .spu audio,
.str video, .tim images) and exports/imports them in bulk.
Translation editor. Purpose-built, showing source and output side by side
with the control tags preserved, a live preview of the actual in-game text box,
pixel-width and line-count validation against the box dimensions, and the
matching audio clip and video moment for context.
Dubbing. We're recording the prologue with real voice actors right now, and
that part is already translated. There's a dedicated tool for the dub team that
lays out the script with clips, screen references, sync marks and director's
notes, so the actors produce audio in a standardised format. The plan is a full presentation video with both the
translation and the dub.
The translation targets the PS1 version. One of our developers also made a
Switch port of the Android release of the game, and we plan to bring the
translation over to that as well.
Track record
The team has been doing localization work for a while. One example of mine is
Projeto Dragoon, a full PT-BR translation and dub of The Legend of
Dragoon. A beta of Disc 1 is out as a patch, with translated text, images,
dubbed audio and even a Portuguese version of the theme song.
https://projeto-dragoon.com.br/
Relevant to this proposal: that translation is being integrated into
Severed Chains, the international Java-based recreation of The Legend of
Dragoon. So we've already gone through the process of adapting a PT-BR
localization to a fan-made engine reimplementation rather than shipping only a
disc patch. That's essentially what we're proposing here.
The developer who built our extraction and reinsertion tooling runs his own
projects at https://oaleextraducoes.com/.

What we'd like to do
Ship the translation as a mod package for this port, so players use their own
disc and the mod supplies only our own text and audio. Nothing from the
original game gets redistributed.
Reading docs/MOD_PACKAGES.md in psxrecomp, this looks like it's already the
intended shape: the manifest example has a retranslation feature in a
Localization group, using [[overlay]] with target = "disc_raw" and a
sha256 guard. We haven't checked how well that fits a rebuild that changes
archive sizes, so we'd rather hear what you'd recommend than assume.
The question
Would you be interested in a mod carrying our translation and dub? If so, we can
work out the technical side from there.
Happy to go deeper on any of it. If it's easier to talk somewhere less formal
than an issue thread, our Discord is https://discord.gg/khkbUN8AJ4 and you're
very welcome there.
Thanks for building this port.
