Short definitions for terms used in this directory, including AML, KYT, liquid staking, MEV, L2s, and SPL.
Avg. Liquidity is the average liquidity score for an asset across its main trading pairs and exchanges.
- Higher values usually mean deeper order books and lower slippage on normal-sized trades.
- Lower values usually mean thinner books and more price impact when you buy or sell.
Use it to gauge how easily you can enter or exit without moving the price much.
Markets is the number of trading pairs listed for a coin or token across exchanges tracked by CoinMarketCap.
For example, BTC/USDT, BTC/USD, and BTC/EUR count as three markets.
More markets often means wider exchange coverage. It does not always mean every pair is liquid.
A Spot Exchange is where you buy or sell assets for near-immediate delivery. After the trade, you own the asset.
- Ownership: You hold the real asset (for example, you can send BTC to a hardware wallet).
- Leverage: Usually none, or limited margin trading.
- Risk: Mainly the asset falling in price. You only get "liquidated" if you borrowed funds.
- Example: Buying $1,000 of Bitcoin and holding it.
A Derivatives Exchange lists contracts whose value tracks an underlying asset. You trade price movement, not the asset itself.
- Ownership: You hold a contract (futures, options, or perpetuals), not the coin.
- Leverage: Often high (10x, 50x, 100x), so you control a larger position than your cash.
- Shorting: Easier to bet that price will fall.
- Risk: High. If price moves against you, the position can be liquidated (wiped out).
A Decentralized Exchange (DEX) for spot trading uses smart contracts so you trade from your own wallet, without a middleman holding funds.
- Control: Non-custodial. You keep your private keys ("not your keys, not your coins").
- Mechanism: Usually AMMs and liquidity pools instead of a classic order book.
- Privacy: KYC is usually not required.
- Examples: Uniswap (Ethereum), PancakeSwap (BSC), STON.fi (TON).
KYT (Know Your Transaction) screens crypto transfers and wallet activity for illicit or high-risk patterns.
- Used by exchanges, VASPs, and compliance teams next to KYC.
- Flags links to sanctions, mixers, darknet markets, scams, and similar abuse.
- Examples: Chainalysis KYT, Elliptic screening, TRM transaction monitoring.
A VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider) is a business that exchanges, transfers, or custodially holds virtual assets for customers.
- Often includes centralized exchanges, custodians, brokers, and some wallet providers.
- In many places they must follow AML/CFT rules: KYC, KYT, Travel Rule, and related controls.
- Examples: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken (where they are licensed or regulated).
A dApp (decentralized application) runs on a blockchain through smart contracts, not a single company server.
- You usually connect a wallet. Logic and state sit on-chain.
- The website frontend can still be hosted normally. Settlement and permissions stay on-chain.
- Examples: Uniswap, Aave, OpenSea, Polymarket.
RPC (Remote Procedure Call) is how wallets, dApps, and tools talk to a blockchain node to read data and send transactions.
- Providers give HTTP/WebSocket endpoints per network (Ethereum mainnet, Base, Solana, and so on).
- Apps use them for balances, blocks, logs, and broadcasting signed transactions.
- Examples: Alchemy, QuickNode, Infura, public chain RPCs.
IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is peer-to-peer storage addressed by content hash. It is widely used for NFT metadata and decentralized files.
- Content is found by a CID hash, not one permanent server URL.
- Gateways and pinning services help keep files reachable.
- Examples: NFT media/metadata, Infura IPFS, Pinata, public IPFS gateways.
Yield trading lets you buy, sell, or speculate on future yield from staking, lending, or similar cash-flow assets. Many products split principal and yield into separate tokens.
- You can take fixed or floating yield exposure without always holding the full underlying position.
- Common in DeFi interest-rate and points/yield markets.
- Examples: Pendle and similar yield-tokenization protocols.
Liquid staking stakes tokens for network rewards and gives you a liquid receipt token you can trade, lend, or use in DeFi.
- Your capital is not stuck only in native staking.
- Receipt tokens (LSTs) stand for staked principal plus accruing rewards.
- Examples: Lido (stETH), Jito (jitoSOL).
Restaking reuses already staked assets (or liquid staking tokens) to help secure extra services or networks. You may earn more yield, and you take on more slashing risk.
- Extends economic security past the base chain’s consensus.
- Higher rewards usually come with a messier risk profile.
- Examples: EigenLayer / EigenCloud and related AVS ecosystems.
Lending in DeFi means supplying crypto to a protocol so others can borrow it, usually against collateral, in return for interest.
- Suppliers earn yield. Borrowers pay interest and can get liquidated if collateral drops.
- Rates often move with utilization.
- Examples: Aave, Morpho, Spark, Maple.
MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) is profit from reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions in a block, beyond normal block rewards and gas fees.
- Covers arbitrage, sandwiching, liquidations, and priority auctions.
- It can hurt user execution and shapes validator/searcher incentives.
- Examples: Flashbots, Jito (Solana), sandwich and backrun strategies.
A Multisig (multi-signature) wallet needs several approved signatures before funds move or a transaction runs.
- Common setup: M-of-N (for example 2-of-3 or 3-of-5).
- Used for treasuries, DAOs, teams, and shared custody so one lost key is less catastrophic.
- Examples: Safe{Wallet} (formerly Gnosis Safe).
A Hot Wallet stores keys on a device connected to the internet (browser extension, mobile, or desktop app).
- Handy for daily spending, trading, and dApps.
- More exposed to malware, phishing, and remote attacks than cold storage.
- Examples: MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet, Rabby.
A Cold Wallet keeps private keys offline, usually on a hardware device or air-gapped setup, so signing does not put keys on the open internet.
- Better for long-term storage and larger balances.
- Often used with a hot wallet or companion app for viewing balances and preparing transactions.
- Examples: Ledger, Trezor, and other hardware or air-gapped setups.
EVMs (Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible chains) run Ethereum-style smart contracts and tooling with little or no code change.
- Same general stack: Solidity/Vyper, MetaMask-style wallets, familiar explorers.
- They differ mainly in fees, speed, security model, and bridging.
- Examples: Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Avalanche C-Chain.
L2s (Layer 2s) process transactions off the base Layer 1 (often Ethereum), then settle or prove results back to L1 for security and finality.
- Usually cheaper and faster than L1 for everyday activity.
- Common designs: optimistic rollups and ZK rollups.
- Examples: Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync, Linea.
SPL (Solana Program Library) is Solana’s standard token and program toolkit. In practice people often mean SPL tokens (Solana’s fungible and NFT standards).
- Roughly like ERC-20 / ERC-721 on Ethereum, but built for Solana’s account model.
- Used for mints, transfers, ATAs (associated token accounts), and a lot of DeFi/NFT apps.
- Examples: USDC on Solana, most Solana memecoins and NFT collections.
AML (Anti-Money Laundering) covers laws, controls, and processes meant to catch and stop laundering of illicit funds, including in crypto.
- Usually sits next to KYC (identity), KYT (transaction monitoring), sanctions screening, and suspicious-activity reporting.
- Required for many VASPs. Also relevant for investigators and compliance teams.
- Examples: wallet screening, Travel Rule compliance, Chainalysis / Elliptic / TRM workflows.
