📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The API adds a pii_masker tool that masks email addresses, Korean resident registration numbers, and hyphenated phone numbers. The change also updates backend and frontend dependency pins, lock records, dependency contracts, and security-scan documentation.

Changes

PII Masking Tool

Layer / File(s) Summary
Masking handler, registration, and API tests
backend/api/tools.py, backend/tests/test_tools_api.py
The handler replaces matching values with category-specific placeholders and returns per-category counts. API tests cover multiple matches and values adjacent to Korean text.

Dependency Pins and Security-Scan Documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency pins and hash-locked records
backend/pyproject.toml, backend/requirements.txt, backend/requirements-hashes.txt, frontend/package.json, frontend/pnpm-workspace.yaml
Updates backend pins and corresponding hash-locked records. Updates Next.js, eslint-config-next, and the Sharp override.
Optional lock ownership and dependency contracts
backend/requirements-agent.txt, backend/tests/test_container_dependency_pin_contract.py
Removes shared package pins from the optional agent requirements. Contracts check backend and frontend pins against lock records and verify that optional and core package names are disjoint.
Security-scan repair record and guidance
AGENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md, docs/doctoring/2026-09-30-dependency-security-scan-rca.md, docs/product-technical-gap-baseline.md
Documents the dedicated dependency-repair process, the reported lock and compatibility issues, and the recorded verification status.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0a982

The new PII masking tool leaves phone numbers and resident registration numbers written without hyphens unmasked, yet still reports success. Callers can therefore assume the text has been redacted when it has not. Support compact formats before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0a982

The new masking tool can return recognizable personal identifiers unchanged while reporting success. This weakens its usefulness as a privacy control. The demonstrated exposure is limited to text submitted by an authenticated caller; no cross-user data retrieval, new credential access, or automatic external disclosure was established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The newly exposed PII tool returns unsupported but recognizable identifier formats unchanged in masked_text while reporting success. Separator-free values such as 01012345678 and 9001011234567 do not match its phone or resident-registration patterns. Consumers interpreting success as a safe-to-share guarantee can therefore propagate personal data.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The demonstrated exposure consists of personal data contained in an authenticated caller's submitted text and returned in that request's response. The handler does not retrieve another user's records, access credentials, or transmit text to another service. Wider exposure through downstream consumers was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A retained sensitive-data-exposure finding applies to the newly added masking capability. Caller-controlled text passes string validation, unmatched identifiers survive the regex substitutions, and the endpoint returns the full resulting text with success. Authentication and passing tests for covered formats do not establish masking completeness.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The application applies get_auth_context to the tools router, so missing route-local authentication is not evidence of an authentication bypass. Registry validation constrains parameter names and types, but neither it nor the execution success envelope certifies that returned text is free of personal identifiers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Masking uses local state and publishes its result only after substitutions complete; caught failures return no partial result. Replacement tokens do not match the source patterns, making repeated processing idempotent for the supported formats. The dependency ownership test also prevents duplicate package ownership from silently returning.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the supported identifier formats and make incomplete recognition distinguishable from a privacy assurance. Before consumers use masked_text as safe-to-share output, extend recognition for agreed formats and expose limitations explicitly rather than equating execution success or zero matches with complete sanitization.

Exact-head blocker receipt — 4e5053bdaf8d0a4c869d761596b684e7edb59840

Draft is correct and must be retained. Exact-head Security Scan run 36704750975, job 109852338863, fails on shared-base dependency findings (PyJWT, AnyIO, oauthlib, Next.js, and Sharp). Canonical owner PR #1828 (e725203385a6381040b22231281fc63d9ed09f62) already carries the repository-wide RED→GREEN dependency repair and remains Draft pending exact-head admission.

A separate current-head security review also found that unhyphenated Korean phone/resident identifiers can pass through unchanged while the tool returns success. That substantive feature-boundary finding requires a bounded masking contract plus RED cases before this PR can return to Ready. No dependency bypass, masking claim inflation, manual rerun, merge, or close is authorized.

2026-09-30 exact-head repair record

  • Lifecycle: moved to Draft before repair because the prior head could return success while leaving identifiers exposed.
  • Reproduced RED on 4e5053bdaf8d0a4c869d761596b684e7edb59840: Python Unicode \b does not create a boundary between an ASCII identifier and an adjacent Korean letter, so user@example.com으로, 010-1234-5678입니다, and 900101-1234567입니다 remained unchanged with zero counts.
  • RED test commit: 56b0565271d837097d243669d00d11de7ea38346 adds an authenticated API regression for all three Korean-adjacent formats.
  • Repair commit / current head: d00af11ee54486afba4ccb2c4ca244d851fcbbfa. It replaces Unicode word boundaries with identifier-specific ASCII/digit lookarounds, uses one re.subn pass per identifier, and documents the handler contract.
  • Focused local reproduction after the repair: expected masked text matched exactly and counts were email=1, rrn=1, phone=1.
  • Exact-head GitHub checks are newly queued; CodeQL PR is skipped, not treated as GREEN. Keep Draft until all required exact-head checks and independent review are complete.

The earlier Trivy filesystem failure is a shared-base dependency finding (PyJWT/anyio/oauthlib/Next.js/sharp), not introduced by this two-file PII delta. Canonical repair remains open in #1828 (e725203385a6381040b22231281fc63d9ed09f62); this PR does not duplicate or bypass that dependency work.

Concurrent-head recheck — d00af11ee54486afba4ccb2c4ca244d851fcbbfa

The new child adds RED/GREEN coverage for identifiers adjacent to Korean text and fixes that boundary. It does not cover the separately reported unhyphenated phone/RRN forms (01012345678, 9001011234567), which can still return unchanged under status=success; the bounded-contract finding therefore remains open.

Exact-head Security Scan run 36706754619, job 109858892327, verified checkout identity and still fails on the same 28 shared-base PyJWT/AnyIO/oauthlib/Next.js/Sharp findings. Canonical dependency owner remains Draft PR #1828. Draft remains correct; queued Application CI/Bandit/Docker work is not GREEN evidence. No merge, bypass, close, or unchanged-source rerun is authorized.

Preserve the complete PII masker delta while inheriting the develop-root dependency remediation proven by Security Scan run 36697284358. This replaces exact-head trivy failure run 36706608256 without suppressing findings or rewriting history.

Exact-head RCA/repair update (2026-09-30):

  • Predecessor head 56b0565271d837097d243669d00d11de7ea38346 failed Security Scan run 36706608256, Trivy job 109858299211, with 28 repo-wide findings across PyJWT, AnyIO, oauthlib, Next.js, and Sharp.
  • Canonical develop-root owner PR fix(security): repair shared dependency scan failures #1828 exact e725203385a6381040b22231281fc63d9ed09f62 already carries the tested lock/source repair and its Security Scan run 36697284358 is terminal SUCCESS.
  • Preserved PII 마스킹 도구 추가 및 테스트 작성 #1829's later PII boundary fixes through d00af11ee54486afba4ccb2c4ca244d851fcbbfa; ordinary two-parent merge 0a9827bf24b23fc06902ab0c5077c1c1d710cfd4 now has parents d00af11e… and e7252033…, tree 9097ffb8e7b291e5d0ac8229a0ada6351d7fe476. No force push, finding suppression, or history rewrite.
  • Fresh merged-tree validation: focused PII/dependency tests 68 passed; backend 1810 passed, 32 skipped with PYTHONWARNINGS=error; frontend 51 files / 437 tests; ESLint, TypeScript, pip check, and Next.js 16.3.6 production build all exited 0. Exact versions include PyJWT 2.14.0, AnyIO 4.15.1, oauthlib 4.0.0, Starlette 1.7.0, and HTTPX2 2.13.1.
  • New exact-head workflows are 36708861664, 36708860949, 36708860820, 36708860859, 36708860873, and Draft-policy CodeQL 36708860922 (skipped). Queued/in-progress/skipped states are not asserted as passing.

Mask phone numbers and resident registration numbers without hyphens.

Line 787 and Line 794 require literal hyphens. Neither pattern matches compact identifiers. The updated boundaries do not change this restriction. (docs.python.org)

An authenticated caller can submit {"text":"01012345678 9001011234567"} through /api/tools/pii_masker/execute. String validation accepts this input. The handler returns both identifiers unchanged, all counts remain zero, and the endpoint returns status="success". This bypasses the tool's redaction guarantee.

Add compact-format alternatives for phone numbers and make the RRN separator optional. Preserve digit boundaries and mask RRNs before phone numbers. Add API regressions for both compact formats, including Korean-adjacent values.

The PR objective includes masking both identifier categories.

Also applies to: 794-794
