PR created automatically by Jules for task 17834145715250207032 started by @seonghobae

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Local request validation now detects path traversal attempts hidden behind multiple layers of percent encoding, including encoded slashes.
    • Paths with more than eight layers of nested encoding are rejected with a clear validation error, helping prevent ambiguous or unsafe paths from being accepted.
    • Invalid UTF-8 percent encoding continues to be rejected.

๐Ÿ“ Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The local HTTP request-target validator now repeatedly percent-decodes each path segment, stopping when decoding no longer changes it. It rejects invalid UTF-8 and segments that remain encoded after eight iterations. Tests cover encoded traversal paths and deeply nested encoding.

Changes

Local HTTP path validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded path decoding and validation
backend/core/local_http.py, backend/tests/test_local_http.py, .jules/sentinel.md
The validator decodes each path segment repeatedly, up to eight iterations. Tests cover doubly encoded traversal paths, encoded slashes, and excessive nesting. A security note describes the single-decoding risk.

Priority: โฌ†๏ธ High

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ๐Ÿ”ต Low ยท up to 4ca92

Deeply encoded but safe local paths can be rejected. This is a bounded compatibility issue that can be corrected before merge or accepted with owner awareness.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ๐Ÿ”ต Low ยท up to 4ca92

The change blocks more encoded traversal paths without changing how the examined request is authenticated or sent. The main remaining uncertainty is whether other callers and the receiving server interpret encoded paths consistently with this validator.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred โ€” For the examined smoke-script caller, a supplied path encounters the stricter gate before an HTTP request carrying its existing session credential. The evidence does not establish the full set of callers or server-side decoding behavior.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred โ€” The added decoding closes the examined route by which a multiply encoded dot segment could pass the former single-pass traversal check. The supplied evidence does not establish a successful downstream endpoint-access or SSRF attack.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed โ€” Request-target validation remains separate from authentication: the examined caller validates the path before constructing a request with its Cookie and, ordinarily, Bearer header.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed โ€” Verify end to end that the receiving server interprets nested encodings consistently with this gate, including inputs at the eight-pass boundary.

Accept segments that finish decoding on iteration eight.

If the eighth unquote call produces a fully decoded safe segment, the loop raises local request path is too deeply nested. The repositoryโ€™s other bounded decoders allow the configured number of changing decodes and use one additional decode only as the stability check.

Suggested fix
-        for _ in range(8):
+ # Allow eight changing decodes, then use the ninth call as the
+ # stability check.
+        for _ in range(9):

Add tests for safe segments at the eight- and nine-layer boundaries.

Understood. Acknowledging that this work is now obsolete and stopping work on this task.

Preserve PR #1818's bounded URL traversal repair while stacking the
repository-wide dependency owner delta from PR #1828. The previous exact
head failed Trivy on three AnyIO advisories, two Next.js advisories, and one
Sharp advisory inherited from develop; #1828 repairs those source manifests
and generated locks without weakening the fail-closed security gate.

Combined-tree evidence: 1,809 backend tests passed with warnings fatal,
37 focused URL/dependency contracts passed, 437 frontend tests passed,
Python and pnpm production audits found no known vulnerabilities, and
git diff --check passed.

These are shared develop dependency-owner defects. I preserved this PR's complete URL traversal repair and non-force stacked the canonical test-first owner PR #1828 as two-parent commit 56d42e00ebd734d9a5dfe6536b3050ca01963f82 (tree d5128c588937702a3d96ef4df8c343e73c5b5518; parents 4ca92f2โ€ฆ and 222099aโ€ฆ). The PR remains Draft; no gate or advisory was suppressed.

Fresh combined-tree evidence:

Canonical owner refresh

PR #1818 now integrates the repaired #1828 owner head through an ordinary two-parent merge; no force push or destructive rebase was used.

  • predecessor consumer head: 56d42e00ebd734d9a5dfe6536b3050ca01963f82
  • owner repair head: e725203385a6381040b22231281fc63d9ed09f62
  • new exact consumer head: 9ecdf6b077d0df8d774df7db42b8e34a70462787
  • inherited root fix: remove stale duplicate Noema lock pins and enforce core/optional package ownership disjointness
  • focused URL/Noema/lock suite: 57 passed
  • full backend: 1811 passed, 32 skipped with PYTHONWARNINGS=error
  • Ruff and git diff --check: clean

The valid URL traversal delta remains present. This PR stays Draft until new exact-head hosted Checks are terminal successful; predecessor, queued, and skipped results are not reused as passing evidence.
