fix(hush-ios): a copied value survives leaving the app, so paste works elsewhere - #105
In Hush iOS, Copy shows "Copied. Clears in 30 seconds.", but paste in another app gets nothing. Leaving Hush to paste moves the app to the background. The background lock then clears the pasteboard before the other app opens, so paste works only inside Hush.
Change
The background path now releases the copy to the 30-second system expiry. Back in the app, Hush takes the copy back if it is still there, so Lock clears it again.
// Clipboard.swift
func clearIfOwned() {
- expiry?.cancel(); expiry = nil- guard let owned = ownedChangeCount else { return }- ownedChangeCount = nil- guard pasteboard.changeCount == owned else { return }+ let owned = ownedChangeCount+ release()+ guard let owned, pasteboard.changeCount == owned else { return }
pasteboard.items = []
}
+func release() { /* cancel timer */; releasedChangeCount = ownedChangeCount; ownedChangeCount = nil }+func reclaim() { if pasteboard.changeCount == releasedChangeCount { ownedChangeCount = releasedChangeCount } }
// AppModel.swift
func enterBackground() {
+ clipboard.release() // later clearIfOwned calls, including the one in RootView, skip the copy
lock()
}
+func enterForeground() { clipboard.reclaim() } // HushApp calls it on scenePhase .active
The copy keeps .localOnly and .expirationDate (now + 30 s), so iOS removes it, and Universal Clipboard never gets it. README.md and Sources/Core/API.md now name the background exception.

Disposition
Reason
A manual Lock right after returning does not clear a released value (also CodeRabbit and PR Lens)
Fix
97e5ce5 adds reclaim on scene active. The test now locks after return and expects an empty pasteboard.
A self lock or Forget after release has the same gap
Fix
Same reclaim. Every later clearIfOwned clears the copy again.
A late RootView clear after reclaim could clear the copy early
Decline
That fails closed: the secret leaves sooner, never later. RootView.swift:22 runs on the background store close, before the app returns.
The test cannot prove the RootView.onChange path ran
Decline
The test hosts RootView in a key window and lays it out after enterBackground, and the value survives both paths. On main, the same test fails at AppModelTests.swift:76.
The test uses the shared general pasteboard and a fixed sleep
Decline
AppModel builds Clipboard() on .general (AppModel.swift:86). The existing clipboard test uses the same pattern.
No paired manual Lock test
Decline
automaticSessionCleanupClearsOnlyOurClipboard covers the clear on lock. Manual lock() runs the same clearVault() path.
README says cleared when locked, then adds the exception
Fix
31abc49 says the background lock is the exception, and the 30 seconds count from the copy.
The enterBackground comment says lock runs first
Fix
31abc49 rewrites the comment in order: release, then lock.
The API note does not say what clearIfOwned does after a release
Door: two-way. Revert this PR to undo it.
Blast radius: low. Only AppModel.enterBackground calls release(), and the 44-test suite proves Lock and self lock still clear the pasteboard.

Going to the background locked the app and cleared the pasteboard before
any other app could paste. Background now releases the copy to the
30-second system expiry. Manual lock and a self-locked session still
clear it at once.

Copied values now remain available for pasting when the app moves to the background and locks. iOS removes the value 30 seconds after it was copied.
The app no longer clears clipboard content that another app has copied.
Walkthrough
Background entry now releases clipboard ownership before locking and clearing the vault. The copied value remains on the pasteboard until iOS expires it. A test verifies the background state and retained value.

Background entry releases clipboard ownership before locking. A test checks that the store locks, the detail becomes idle, and the copied value remains on the pasteboard. The README describes iOS expiry.
A secret can remain pasteable after the user returns to Hush and manually locks it. Restore ownership safely before merging so manual Lock clears the copy without disrupting background paste.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #103 requires four coding changes. (1) Background must not clear the copied value. At head, AppModel.enterBackground() calls clipboard.release() before lock(). release() cancels the in-app expiry task and sets ownedChangeCount to nil. A later clearIfOwned() then returns without clearing. (2) The system expiry must stay. Clipboard.copy() still calls Clipboard.options(now:lifetime:), which sets .localOnly and .expirationDate (now + 30 s). (3) Manual Lock must still clear the value. lock() calls clearVault(), which calls clipboard.clearIfOwned(). This path clears the value when the copy has not been released, and the self-lock test automaticSessionCleanupClearsOnlyOurClipboard covers the same clearVault() path. (4) Tests must cover background retention and manual-lock clearing. The PR adds AppModelTests.leavingTheAppKeepsTheCopiedValueForPasting, as reported in the PR description and raw summary. I did not read the test file directly. Residual limit, not a failure: after the app returns to the foreground, a manual Lock does not clear a value already released by background. The value still expires 30 s after the copy. The issue does not define this case, and the PR description records the trade-off.

Explanation
All changed areas support issue #103. Clipboard.swift adds release() and makes clearIfOwned() use it. AppModel.swift adds the release() call in enterBackground() and updates its comment. Clipboard.swift and AppModel.swift at head match the PR description. README.md and Sources/Core/API.md document the background exception, which describes the new behavior. AppModelTests.swift adds the background-retention test. No unrelated behavior change appears in the reported changes. The PR does not change .localOnly, which the issue treats as intended.

clipboard.release() drops ownership so later locks fail open
enterBackground calls clipboard.release(), which sets ownedChangeCount to nil, so every later lock’s clearIfOwned hits guard let owned and returns. A copied secret stays on the pasteboard after the user taps Lock, pasteable by any app until the 30s system expiry.
Fix: Give Clipboard a released flag and have clearIfOwned clear when the pasteboard still holds our value; or clear the pasteboard in AppModel.lock() instead of relying on clearIfOwned.

Problem: `clipboard.release()` drops ownership so later locks fail open. `enterBackground` calls `clipboard.release()`, which sets `ownedChangeCount` to nil, so every later lock's `clearIfOwned` hits `guard let owned` and returns. A copied secret stays on the pasteboard after the user taps Lock, pasteable by any app until the 30s system expiry.
Fix: Give `Clipboard` a released flag and have `clearIfOwned` clear when the pasteboard still holds our value; or clear the pasteboard in `AppModel.lock()` instead of relying on `clearIfOwned`.

Fixed in 97e5ce5. Later locks no longer fail open: reclaim() on scene active restores ownership when the copy is still on the pasteboard, so the next clearIfOwned clears it.

Reviewed changes across the clipboard implementation, background lifecycle, regression test, and privacy/API documentation.
Background handoff:enterBackground() releases clipboard ownership before locking, so both immediate and view-driven cleanup preserve the copied value for another app.
Bounded retention: Release leaves the original system-managed 30-second expiration and device-local restriction intact; owned-copy cleanup outside the released state still preserves text copied elsewhere.
Coverage and contract: The new test checks retained clipboard content alongside locked session and cleared detail, and the documentation explains the background exception and post-release behavior.
Traced the relevant callers and existing security tests and verified the UIKit expiration contract. Native iOS tests could not be rerun because this Linux runner has no xcodebuild; actual cross-app paste remains a device-validation boundary. The later Lock/Forget behavior for an already released copy is the explicitly documented tradeoff in this PR, not an additional finding.
Separately, the PR-body contract check currently reports that the required attribution is not the final line because the generated PR Lens appendix follows it. This code approval does not override that metadata gate or pending CI checks.

Reviewed changes in 97e5ce5 since the previous Pullfrog review at 31abc49, focusing on clipboard ownership after returning to Hush.
Retained released ownership: Saved the original pasteboard change count during background release and restored ownership only when the clipboard remains unchanged, without rewriting the item or extending its system expiration.
Connected foreground cleanup: Added the scene-active hook through AppModel.enterForeground(), allowing subsequent Lock, Forget, and automatic cleanup to clear the reclaimed copy while preserving replacement clipboard content.
Extended coverage and documentation: Added a foreground-return-and-Lock assertion to the background-copy regression test and documented the restored cleanup behavior.
Traced the ownership transitions and lifecycle/cleanup callers. Native iOS tests could not be rerun on this Linux runner because xcodebuild is unavailable; actual cross-app paste and system expiration remain platform-validation boundaries. iOS and root CI checks were still running when inspected.
