Fixes the blown-out, flickering lighting and full-screen black flashes seen in probe-lit interiors (NVIDIA, HDR), worse while the camera moves.

Cause

  • The light passes overflowed the scene. The point, spot and multi-light passes and the sun clamped a light's lobe at 65504, then multiplied it by the light's intensity (up to six times its colour). A polished surface under a nearby light wrote past what the RGBA16F scene holds, and the store made it +Inf. The passes add, so even a light at the ceiling overflowed over anything beneath it.
  • Bloom spread it over the frame. The bloom extract's firefly clamp scaled an infinite pixel by zero into a NaN, and the pyramid carried that one texel full screen: the black flash.
  • Probes spread it over their volume. In a probe capture the infinity went down the mip chain into every coarser mip, the radiance prefilter and the SH projection. The whole probe lit blown out, or black where SH bands of opposite sign met as a NaN, and neighbouring probes' captures picked it up.
  • Out-of-view probes read as occluded. A probe's query box draws nothing outside the view, so the probe left the list. Once the view turned back, it stayed out for the 3–6 frames a new answer takes. The automatic probes it eclipsed had already given up their slots, so its volume lit from the default probe's sky.

What changes

  • One clamp, three ceilings. clampRadiance(c, ceiling) is the only clamp; clampHDRRange is gone.
    • MAX_PUNCTUAL_RADIANCE (512) bounds what one light, or one light pass, adds.
    • MAX_SURFACE_RADIANCE (32752, half the fp16 range) bounds the soften pass, which the light passes add onto, so it and 63 light passes at the ceiling on one pixel stay finite.
    • MAX_SCENE_RADIANCE (65504) bounds everything else written into the scene whole: the sky composite, forward alpha and the post passes, which no light pass adds onto.
    • The lights clamp after intensity, and each pass bounds what it writes.
  • Non-finite values are held out of the bloom extract, the probe mip downsample, the SH packing, a probe's irradiance at zero scale, the exposure meter and the exposure history.
  • Sphere eclipse at the exact radius. A manual sphere evicts the automatic probes within its exact full-weight radius (ALProbeEclipse::sphereFullWeightRadius, mirroring sphereWeight's dw): 8/9 of the radius from 1 m up, where it was half. probeMix selects the manual probes once their weight reaches 1. Enclosure alone is not the rule: automatic probes still show through toward a sphere's edge.
  • Probe occlusion:
    • a probe out of view takes no query and is left out of the list on each frame's own camera, and the update scheduler takes it again once it is back in view;
    • an occluded placed probe stays in the list;
    • the material preview forces the default probe with a flag, no longer by marking every other probe occluded.
  • Probe mips. The probe cube array allocates only the 7 levels its chain writes, so a tap at max_probe_lod no longer filters toward an unwritten 1×1 level.

Look changes

  • A punctual contribution above 512 is scaled down, keeping its hue. At the darkest default exposure (EV 2) 512 is still 128, past ACES's white, and above bloom's firefly clamp of 24, but depth-of-field bokeh from extreme glints carries less energy.
  • The soften pass is held at 32752, which no tonemapper at any default exposure tells from more.
  • Automatic probes evicted by the wider sphere radius were contributing nothing, so no pixel changes by construction.

Verified

  • Built (Release, proprietary vs2026 preset) on a tree equal to develop e9d2331376 in every file this touches. The branch tip's 29 files are byte-identical to that tree.
  • The viewer reaches the login screen on a scratch profile with all 323 programs built from source on NVIDIA 617.42 (RTX 4080), none failing.
  • check_exposure.py passes, including a new non-finite-history case that fails without the guard. check_sh_projection.py passes.
  • sphereFullWeightRadius matches the shader's dw in a Python mirror at seven radii from 0.25 m to 64 m, with no mismatch.

Not verified

  • Not run in-world at the venue where the glitch was seen.
  • alprobeeclipse_test and alfarplane_test not built, and ctest not run: no tests-on tree.
  • No AMD, Intel or macOS runs, and no Tracy capture of keeping occluded placed probes in the list.

The point, spot and multi-light passes and the sun bounded a light's
lobe at MAX_PUNCTUAL_RADIANCE, 65504, and then multiplied it by the
light's intensity, up to six times its colour: a polished surface near
a light wrote past what the RGBA16F scene holds, the store made it an
infinity, and since the passes add, even one light at the ceiling
overflowed over anything already there. The bound now takes the
intensity in, applies to what each pass writes as well, and is a
sixteenth of the range, 4094, so sixteen passes at it on one pixel fit;
at exposure's darkest default it is still white.

clampRadiance is the one clamp, and takes its ceiling: a light's share,
MAX_PUNCTUAL_RADIANCE, or the most the scene holds, MAX_SCENE_RADIANCE,
for what is written into it whole -- the soften pass, the sky's
composite, forward alpha and the post passes, which clampHDRRange
bounded per channel and let a finite overflow through. It takes a NaN
to zero and an infinity to the ceiling rather than scaling it into a
NaN, keeps an overflow's hue, and clampHDRRange is gone; the far plane
test reads the sky's line as it now stands.

…o a NaN

The firefly clamp scaled a pixel by the clamp over its brightest
channel, which for an infinity is zero, and zero times infinity is a
NaN: the pyramid spread that one texel over the whole frame, which
showed as a black flash. A NaN now goes to zero and the rest to 65504
before the clamp.

…tarts over

min(NaN, 60000) answers 60000 on NVIDIA, so a frame of NaN pixels
metered as the brightest there is and pulled the exposure down; a NaN
is shown black, and now meters so. The exposure adapts from last
frame's, so a non-finite EV, once written, would have stayed for good;
it now starts again from the frame's own. check_exposure.py mirrors the
guard and checks it.

…values

An infinity captured into a probe face went down the mip chain into
every coarser mip, the radiance prefilter and the SH projection, and
from there to every pixel the probe lit: blown out where it stayed
infinite, black where it met a band of the other sign as a NaN. The mip
downsample now holds each texel with clampRadiance at R11F_G11F_B10F's
largest, and the SH coefficients are held to a half's range before
they are packed (check_sh_projection.py mirrors it). The irradiance
half of a capture weighs every probe's irradiance at zero, and a mix at
weight 0 still carried a neighbour's infinity through as a NaN; a probe
at that scale now gives the sky's ambient without reading its SH.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…radius

ALProbeEclipse evicted an automatic probe only within half a manual
sphere's radius, where its attenuation begins, but the sphere's weight
saturates the mix out to 8/9 of the radius from a metre up; the
automatic probes in between held cube slots and update turns while
showing nothing. sphereFullWeightRadius mirrors sphereWeight's dw and
gives the exact radius. A sphere that merely encloses an automatic
probe still lets it through toward its edge, so enclosure alone is not
the rule. probeMix selects the manual probes where their weight reaches
1 rather than mixing at 1, so the automatic ones contribute exactly
nothing there, as the eviction assumes.

…probe stays lit

Outside the view a probe's query box draws nothing, so it read as
occluded and left the probe list; turned back to, it stayed out until
a new answer came, three to six frames, and its volume was lit
meanwhile by the default probe's sky, since the automatic probes it
eclipsed had given up their slots. Such a probe now takes no query, is
passed over by the update scheduler as before (mOutOfView), and is left
out of the list on each frame's own camera. Occlusion no longer drops a
placed probe either: walking round a wall left one out for the same
frames. The material preview forced the default probe alone by marking
every other probe occluded, which a placed probe now ignores; it sets a
flag getReflectionMaps reads instead.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The array was allocated down to 1x1 while the mip chain and the
radiance prefilter write down to 2x2, so a tap at max_probe_lod
filtered toward a level that held nothing. LLCubeMapArray::allocate
takes the level count; the probes give theirs, and the mirror probes
keep the whole chain.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reflection-probe selection so probes outside the camera view and occluded automatic probes are less likely to affect reflections.
    • Improved stability in HDR lighting and bloom by handling invalid, non-finite, and extreme brightness values more consistently.
    • Prevented invalid exposure history from disrupting exposure adaptation.
    • Adjusted sphere-probe eclipse weighting for more consistent transitions across probe sizes.
    • Improved reflection-probe mipmap allocation to preserve the requested levels during updates and sampling.

The changes add explicit radiance ceilings and non-finite value handling across shader paths, update sphere-probe weighting, and change reflection-map mip allocation, visibility filtering, and probe selection.

Changes: Radiance limits and non-finite values

Layer / File(s) Summary
Radiance ceilings and lighting clamps
indra/llrender/llshadermgr.cpp, indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class1/deferred/deferredUtil.glsl
Shader compilation now injects separate punctual and scene radiance limits. The shared clamp accepts a ceiling, and deferred lighting paths apply the punctual limit to complete lighting contributions.
Per-light radiance bounds
indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class3/deferred/*LightF.glsl
Point, spot, and multipoint light shaders clamp scaled contributions and final outputs using the punctual radiance limit.
Scene outputs and packed radiance
indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class1/*, indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class2/deferred/pbralphaF.glsl, indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class3/deferred/softenLightF.glsl, indra/alrender/tests/alfarplane_test.cpp, scripts/content_tools/check_sh_projection.py
Scene-output shaders pass explicit ceilings to the radiance clamp. Bloom, reflection mip generation, sky composition, and spherical-harmonic packing limit values before output or packing.
Exposure and luminance input handling
indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class1/deferred/exposureF.glsl, indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class1/deferred/luminanceF.glsl, scripts/content_tools/check_exposure.py
Exposure replaces non-finite prior values with the current target. Luminance replaces NaN with zero, and the content-tool check covers non-finite exposure history.

Reflection probe weighting and selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sphere full-weight radius
indra/alrender/alprobeeclipse.cpp, indra/alrender/alprobeeclipse.h, indra/alrender/tests/alprobeeclipse_test.cpp
Sphere eclipse calculations and tests use a radius-dependent full-weight boundary that matches the shader distance weight.
Probe irradiance and blending
indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class3/deferred/reflectionProbeF.glsl
Probe irradiance skips sampling when its scale is nonpositive. Probe mixing uses the manual-probe weight directly when it reaches one.
Reflection-map mip-level allocation
indra/llrender/llcubemaparray.cpp, indra/llrender/llcubemaparray.h, indra/newview/llreflectionmapmanager.cpp
Cube-map arrays track allocated mip levels and accept an optional requested count. Reflection-map code uses a shared mip-count helper and passes the level count to allocation.
Probe visibility and default selection
indra/newview/llreflectionmap.h, indra/newview/llreflectionmapmanager.cpp, indra/newview/llreflectionmapmanager.h
Reflection-map selection checks camera-frustum visibility, tracks out-of-view probes, and filters occluded probes. Default-probe forcing uses a manager flag and updates uniforms.

doOcclusion set mOutOfView on a probe outside the view and never
cleared it on the way back in: the probe's own query clears occlusion
only with the camera inside its padded radius, so a probe the view
turned back to from outside stayed passed over by the update
scheduler, its lighting stale, until a reset or a lost cube slot.
Every probe that takes a query is in view, and is now marked so.

The 4094 share bounded each light pass but not what it adds onto: a
pixel the soften pass left near 65504 -- a mirror reflecting a probe
that caught the sun -- still overflowed when a light added to it. The
soften pass now writes at most half the scene's range,
MAX_SURFACE_RADIANCE, and a light's share is 512, so the soften pass
and 63 light passes at the ceiling on one pixel fit in the RGBA16F
target. At the meter's darkest default exposure (EV 2) 512 is still
128, past ACES's white, and above bloom's firefly clamp. The sky,
forward alpha and the post passes, which no light adds onto, keep
MAX_SCENE_RADIANCE.
