A chess training application that connects a Chessnut Air physical chessboard to a local web interface. Play against Stockfish or Maia, train your openings, analyze your games — on your real board. Most modes also work without hardware, thanks to the built-in virtual chessboard (only Human vs Human requires the physical board).

No need to know Git or Python. Go to the Releases page and download the package for your system.

Windows 10 / 11

⚠️ Windows 11 — Smart App Control If Windows blocks the launch with "Smart App Control has blocked a potentially dangerous file":

• Option A: launch AlChess from the "Launch AlChess" button at the end of the installation (always works)
• Option B: disable Smart App Control in Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → App & browser control → Smart App Control → Off
• Option C: use Windows 10, or Windows 11 with SAC already disabled AlChess is not digitally signed — this is the cause of the block.

Two installation methods are available:

Option A — .exe installer (recommended, simplest)

1. Download AlChess_Setup.exe directly from the Releases
2. Double-click AlChess_Setup.exe
3. If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen): click More info then Run anyway
4. Follow the setup wizard — it installs Python if needed, clones AlChess from GitHub, sets up the environment and creates an AlChess shortcut on the Desktop
5. Launch AlChess with the AlChess shortcut on the Desktop

ℹ️ The SmartScreen alert appears because AlChess is not digitally signed. The program is open source and freely inspectable on GitHub.

Option B — PowerShell script (legacy method)

1. Download AlChess-vX.Y.Z-windows-x86_64.zip from the Releases
2. Extract the ZIP (right-click → "Extract All")
3. Double-click 1-Installer.bat
4. Launch AlChess with 2-Lancer_AlChess.bat (or the AlChess shortcut created on the Desktop)

💡 Use option A if option B fails with a PowerShell execution policy error (common on corporate or school PCs). Option B remains useful if you'd rather inspect the script before running it.

ℹ️ Do not close the server window while using AlChess.

Linux (Ubuntu 22.04 / 24.04)

1. Download AlChess-vX.Y.Z-linux-x86_64.zip from the Releases
2. Extract it, then in a terminal:

   cd AlChess-vX.Y.Z-linux-x86_64
   ./install.sh
   ./start_alchess.sh

⚠️ The Chessnut Air+ has a different idProduct from the Chessnut Air — check with lsusb | grep 2d80 (Linux) or Device Manager (Windows).

Automatic updates

On startup, AlChess checks whether a newer version is available on GitHub (latest published release tag) and updates itself automatically if so. This mechanism is transparent: it requires no action on your part, but does need an internet connection at launch.

You can disable this check via the dedicated checkbox in the main menu. A warning is then displayed to remind you that you will no longer receive automatic updates.

For advanced users who prefer to manage updates themselves (for example in a controlled environment), disabling the check simply creates a no-update.txt file at the root of the installation. Its presence is enough to turn off the automatic check; it can also be created or deleted manually.

Application d'entraînement aux échecs qui connecte un échiquier physique Chessnut Air à une interface web locale. Jouez contre Stockfish ou Maia, entraînez vos ouvertures, analysez vos parties — sur votre vrai échiquier. La plupart des modes fonctionnent aussi sans matériel, grâce à l'échiquier virtuel intégré (seul le mode Humain contre Humain requiert l'échiquier physique).

Pas besoin de connaître Git ou Python. Rendez-vous sur la page Releases et téléchargez le paquet correspondant à votre système.

Windows 10 / 11

⚠️ Windows 11 — Contrôle intelligent des applications (Smart App Control) Si Windows bloque le lancement avec "Contrôle intelligent des applications a bloqué un fichier potentiellement dangereux" :

• Option A : lancer AlChess depuis le bouton "Lancer AlChess" à la fin de l'installation (fonctionne toujours)
• Option B : désactiver Smart App Control dans Paramètres → Confidentialité et sécurité → Sécurité Windows → Contrôle des applications et du navigateur → Contrôle intelligent des applications → Désactivé
• Option C : utiliser Windows 10, ou Windows 11 avec SAC déjà désactivé AlChess n'est pas signé numériquement (certificat de signature de code) — c'est la cause de ce blocage.

Deux méthodes d'installation sont disponibles :

Option A — Installeur .exe (recommandée, la plus simple)

1. Téléchargez AlChess_Setup.exe directement depuis les Releases
2. Double-cliquez sur AlChess_Setup.exe
3. Si Windows affiche « Windows a protégé votre ordinateur » (SmartScreen) : cliquez sur Informations complémentaires puis Exécuter quand même
4. Suivez l'assistant — il installe Python si nécessaire, clone AlChess depuis GitHub, prépare l'environnement et crée un raccourci AlChess sur le Bureau

ℹ️ L'alerte SmartScreen apparaît car AlChess n'est pas signé numériquement. Le programme est open source et inspecté librement sur GitHub.

2. Extrayez le ZIP (clic droit → « Extraire tout »)
3. Double-cliquez sur 1-Installer.bat
4. Lancez AlChess avec 2-Lancer_AlChess.bat (ou le raccourci AlChess créé sur le Bureau)

💡 Utilisez l'option A si l'option B échoue avec une erreur de policy d'exécution PowerShell (fréquent sur les PC d'entreprise ou d'école). L'option B reste utile si vous préférez inspecter le script avant de l'exécuter.

ℹ️ Ne fermez pas la fenêtre du serveur pendant l'utilisation d'AlChess.

Mises à jour automatiques

Au démarrage, AlChess vérifie s'il existe une version plus récente sur GitHub (dernier tag de release publié) et se met à jour tout seul si c'est le cas. Ce mécanisme est transparent : il ne demande aucune action de votre part, mais nécessite une connexion internet au lancement.

Vous pouvez désactiver cette vérification via la case à cocher prévue à cet effet dans le menu principal. Un avertissement s'affiche alors pour rappeler que vous ne recevrez plus les mises à jour automatiquement.

Pour les utilisateurs avancés qui préfèrent gérer les mises à jour eux-mêmes (par exemple en environnement contrôlé), la désactivation crée simplement un fichier no-update.txt à la racine de l'installation. Sa présence suffit à couper la vérification automatique ; il peut aussi être créé ou supprimé manuellement.
