refactor(executors): collapse the duplicated patch, snapshot and eval helpers into named jobs - #1980
Conversation
…aths Lift the pieces that carried their own rule out of nine executor helpers: the breakdown payload's hot-kernel list, the Qwen3-14B-FP8 config shape, the AgentX launcher name, the sizing and ROCR env overrides, the measured-phase power tally and its unreadable cards, one snapshot row's restore and its verification, the strip-level dry-run sweep, and the quarantine an unresponsive Ray round ends in. PR #1980 -- refactor(executors): name the jobs behind the patch, power and eval helpers
What it does: The PR moves logic out of 9 functions in src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/ into named helpers and lowers the code-metrics baseline to match. The intent is no behaviour change. All nine splits behave the same as before, which I checked with a differential script on four of them and by reading the other five line by line. The one blocking issue is the description: it says every function in the touched files is now at or below the complexity ceiling, and that is false at head.
Blocking issues: 1
- [desc-ceiling-claim-false] The description says every function in the touched files is at or below the complexity ceiling, but _apply_patch_no_git is still at CC 24 [verified]
Problem: The PR body says: "Every function in these files now measures at or below the complexity ceiling". At head, the PR's own baseline still listscyclomatic-complexity ..._nogit_patch.py::_apply_patch_no_git 24, lowered only from 26. It also keeps..._ray_serving.py::_serving_actor_body 21, and _ray_serving.py is another touched file. Both are above the AGENTS.md ceiling of 20. The series framing (max CC 26 -> 7) is wrong too: the one function in these files that was above 20 at base is still above it. src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/_nogit_patch.py:188
Impact: Release notes and the complexity-series tracking would mark _nogit_patch.py as done when its main function still has 24 vs 20. That hides the work left over for this series. Runtime behaviour is unaffected.
Action: Change the description to say that _apply_patch_no_git dropped 26 -> 24 and is still on the baseline (and that _serving_actor_body is untouched at 21). Alternatively, lift one more branch out of _apply_patch_no_git, such as the already-applied reverse check or the source-context feedback block, so it really ends up at or below 20.

Inlining the walk and the _record closure removes both and the helper, leaving _resolve_patch_target and _back_up_existing_file at module level as the review asked. _apply_patch_no_git stays within every gated limit: cyclomatic 16, cognitive 26, 141 lines, against 26 / 41 / 169 at the merge base. The overlay inventory records one entry per numstat path, and the empty path list already returned, so the inventory cannot be empty here. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`_back_up_existing_file` reports failure as a missing record, so narrowing on
that instead of on the message keeps the record non-optional and drops the
`or {}` the ledger-failure message carried.

The actor factory carried the merge/replace env composition inside the actor's start method, so every one of its branches counted against the factory. The composition is a complete job and now has its name beside the module's other launch helpers; the factory is back under the complexity ceiling and the baseline entry is retired rather than lowered. What
Six helpers under
src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/each carried a rule thathad no name of its own, inside a unit that was over one of the gated limits in
[tool.hyperloom.code_metrics]. Each rule is now a named function, and in four places thelift collapsed something that existed twice.
What this deletes (the point of the change, not a side effect):
_framework_gap_composer.py_hottest_kernel_names/_kernel_row_name. jscpd over these files: 1 clone / 7 lines / 68 tokens onmain, 0 now_nogit_patch.py_failclosure and three inlineApplyFeedback(...)constructions that repeated it — four copies of one failure result, now one module-level_nogit_failure_nogit_patch.py_StripLevelProbe.cli_errorfield and its hand-rolled error channel: thepatch-CLI error now raises and is caught once in the caller_nogit_patch.py(rel, abs, error)three-position return it travelled in, now a `tuple[Path, Path]_nogit_patch.py_recordclosure, inlined into the one loop that used it_patch_snapshot.py_snapshot_backup_bytes_patch_snapshot.pynot opsdisjunct inoverlay_inventory_without_base's deletion-only refusalThe remaining lifts name a complete job:
_detect_strip_level(reporting one_StripLevelProbeinstead of three parallel accumulators),_resolve_patch_targetand_back_up_existing_file(two of the three closures that were nested in_apply_patch_no_git),_restore_worktree_path/_restore_index_entry/_verify_restored_row/_restore_snapshot_row,_agentx_accuracy_result,_apply_sizing_env_overrides,_pin_rocr_visible_devicesand_quarantine_unresponsive_round.Net production change: +51 lines across the six modules (
_nogit_patch.pyitself is+4). No new type is introduced beyond
_StripLevelProbe, which replaces three parallelaccumulators in the strip-level sweep.
Files: 6 production modules plus
scripts/code_metrics_baseline.txt.An earlier revision of this PR also touched
_grid_variant_filter.py,_recipe_script.pyand
_gpu_power.py. Those three are now reverted tomain: no unit in them was overany gated limit, so changing them only grew production code. Reverting them also removes
the
_PowerTallyNamedTuple and the_gpu_power.pyconflict with #2038 (power-throttleshare and sustained clock), whose behaviour this branch now carries unchanged from
main.Observable effect
One, in the structured feedback a failed apply carries back to the patch author: when the
patchCLI is missing or a strip-level probe times out,ApplyFeedback.tried_levelsisnow empty instead of listing the levels attempted up to the failure. The error message and
every other failure path are unchanged. No other behaviour, interface, default, flag or
artifact moves.
Complexity: what this change lowers, and what it does not
Measured with the gate's own tools (ruff 0.16.2
C901, complexipy 8.0.1),main→ head:_nogit_patch.py::_apply_patch_no_git_patch_snapshot.py::_restore_patch_snapshot_framework_gap_composer.py::_extract_bottleneck_from_breakdown_accuracy_gate.py::parse_eval_results_benchmark_runtime.py::apply_runtime_benchmark_overrides_ray_serving.py::ServingLease._await_or_cancelA previous revision of this description claimed every function in the changed files was
within the complexity ceiling of 20. That was wrong on two counts, and this paragraph
replaces it.
_nogit_patch.py::_apply_patch_no_gitis the function that was measured at 24. It wasnever within the ceiling and this branch did not put it there: at the merge base
(
adbc1879e) it is cyclomatic 26, at the revision that was reviewed (6d96c07c1) itwas 24 — lowered by this branch's first commit, still over — and at this head it is
16. Because this change does touch it, it is brought under the ceiling rather than
excused.
_ray_serving.py::_serving_actor_bodyis still over the ceiling at cyclomatic 21, andthis change does not touch it. It measures 21 at the merge base and 21 at this head, it
is byte-identical between them, and it is carried in
scripts/code_metrics_baseline.txtat21. The ceiling binds a function a change adds or whose complexity a change raises; it
does not require a change passing through a module to repay debt it did not create.
Run through the gate's own collector (
scripts/code_metrics_collect.ruff_findings) over thesix changed files, the cyclomatic ceiling reports
_apply_patch_no_git26 and_serving_actor_body21 at the merge base, and at this head only_serving_actor_body21._patch_snapshot.py::overlay_inventory_without_basesat exactly at 20 on the calibratedscan this review round uses, unchanged from the merge base. It is in a file this PR
changes, so it is brought under the ceiling by deleting an unreachable disjunct: the
overlay inventory records one entry per numstat path and the empty path list already
returned above, so
not opscould never be true. It is now 19 (its gated numbers areunchanged: cyclomatic 13, cognitive 18, 63 lines, none of them ever over a limit).
The three reverted files keep their
mainvalues on that scan(
_gpu_power.py::GpuPowerRecorder.summary23,_grid_variant_filter.py::_matches_unsafe_unified_attn_stack22,_recipe_script.py::resolve_launch_server_script21); they are byte-identical tomainand
