  • Description:

    EXPLORE benchmarks every variant a round proposes. This PR adds three pre-filters that can remove variants from a round before any of them is benchmarked. All three are off by default. With every switch unset, a round runs exactly as it does on main.

    The filters run once, before the benchmark loop, in a single call: _ExploreRound._prefilter calls prefilter_variants in the new executors/explore_prefilter/_prefilter.py. Every module this PR adds lives in that subpackage, and main's measured_variants.py moved into it (see the refactor section). The order is: measurement store, then screen, then projection. A filter can only remove a variant. It never adds a variant, reorders the round, or contributes a number to KEEP/REVERT, current_best, cumulative_gain_validated, the journal or the knowledge base. A removed variant becomes a SKIPPED_DEDUP row with a reason. Those rows are not journaled, not written as facts, and stay out of the tested ledger, so a later round may propose the variant again. A round whose every variant a filter drops counts as answered, like a round the session's own verdicts answer: its status is succeeded, and it does not report the grid as exhausted.

    No filter ever touches a revalidation or a config replay. A variant is protected from all three filters when the round is a stack revalidation (params["source"] == "stack_revalidate"), or when the variant is a config replay or has resume_stack_revalidate provenance (the same _is_noop_filter_exempt rule the no-op probe already uses; those rules now live in explore_prefilter/_remeasure.py, shared by both).

    Switch Default Drops
    HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_STORE=<dir> unset (off) a variant whose exact launch already REVERTed on performance (measured_revert_before)
    HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN=1 off a variant a reduced-GPU real-engine probe shows decisively slower (screen_decisively_slower)
    HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION=1 off a variant InferaSim projects decisively behind the stack (projection_decisively_slower) or outside the top K (projection_outranked)
    HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_ANCHOR_STORE=<dir> unset nothing; when set, each measured decision round is recorded as an InferaSim anchor

    Measurement store (explore_prefilter/_reuse.py)

    The store records only performance REVERTs and is used only to skip them. A hit never produces a KEEP, never replays a gain, and never answers a revalidation. A KEEP is always measured again.

    • What is recorded: a successful decision round whose outcome is REVERT for a performance reason (not accuracy_drop or accuracy_unavailable), with a positive anchor throughput.
    • What a hit does: the variant is dropped as measured_revert_before. The detail gives the recorded timestamp, reason, round and session.
    • The key is a sha256 over:
      • the session: model, engine, GPU, workload signature, the benchmark block, inherited args, warm or cold decision protocol, grading axis, and KEEP threshold
      • the runtime: the image digest and the engine version are both required, and ROCm and aiter versions are included
      • the stack the variant was measured on (extra args and envs, remove_args, unset_envs, args mode) and the variant itself
      • a launch digest of the envs the projection does not price, plus the content digest of every kernel overlay on PYTHONPATH
    • When no key is produced, the variant is measured. That happens when either the image digest or the engine version is unknown, a runtime override is in effect, or an overlay cannot be hashed.
    • Records expire after HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_MAX_AGE_DAYS (default 14).

    Screen (explore_prefilter/_screen.py)

    HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN=1 runs the same engine on fewer GPUs (_GPUS, default 1) and drops a variant that probes more than _MARGIN_PCT (default 10%) behind the stack. The baseline probe is the round's stack, and each variant is probed on that stack: both are materialized as the round would launch them, so the probe gets the stack's and the variant's server args, envs, remove_args and unset_envs, and the model, TP and concurrency of the materialized config. It needs HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_ROOT. It prunes only when the probe and the deployment resolved the same kernels; otherwise it returns the round untouched. A variant whose probe fails is kept. It stays off by default because, on the one grid measured, the order did not transfer from fewer GPUs even with matching kernels. It now runs in a worker thread (asyncio.to_thread) instead of on the event loop.

    Projection (explore_prefilter/_projection.py, inferasim_bridge.py, inferasim_anchors.py)

    HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION=1 projects the stack and each variant with InferaSim and compares the two projections, never a projection with a measurement. Only variants that move levers the projection models (TP/EP/PP, CONC, --max-num-seqs, ISL/OSL, KV dtype) can be dropped. A variant that sets anything else, such as scheduler flags, kernel or env levers, remove_args/unset_envs or overlays, is always benchmarked, as is one that fails to project, projects identically to the stack, or was projected with a different estimator. If the stack itself cannot be projected, the whole round is benchmarked.

    • HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION_MARGIN_PCT (default 15): drop a variant projected more than this far behind the stack in simulate mode.
    • HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION_CALIBRATED_MARGIN_PCT (default 5): the margin when both sides are calibrated against an anchor at regime distance 0. The 5% is a placeholder until the gap error between two calibrated configs has been measured.
    • HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION_TOP_K (default 5): of the competitive variants, only the top K by projected gain are benchmarked.
    • HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_MODE (default auto): auto projects the round in benchmark (calibrated) mode when the stack has an in-regime anchor in the store, and in simulate mode otherwise. It resolves the mode once on the stack and never boots a server. simulate never reads an anchor. benchmark requires an anchor, harvests one on a miss (HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_HARVEST=0 turns that off), and fails closed.
    • HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_ESTIMATOR (default des): InferaSim's closed-loop discrete-event replay at the round's concurrency. analytical selects the closed form.
    • The projection is priced for the session GPU (gpu_type). The arch is derived from it, and the HBM capacity comes from the shared hardware table (roofline_ceiling.HW_SPECS). HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_GPU_ARCH names the part only when the session GPU is unknown.
    • With HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_ANCHOR_STORE set, each successful decision round's TPOT is recorded as a served, real-weights anchor point for its launch. Concurrencies of the same launch merge into a ladder. A ladder failing the monotonicity check is not written, and a launch whose overlays cannot be hashed is not recorded. Anchor selection refuses an anchor whose recorded image, versions or launch envs contradict the candidate's.

    Every variable is documented in docs/reference/environment-variables.md, in the new EXPLORE pre-filters section. The HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_EP, _PP and _KV_DTYPE overrides left over from the backend design are removed: the projection reads each materialized config without the process env, so they never took effect. EP, PP and KV dtype come from the variant's server args.

    InferaSim is not a benchmark backend: HYPERLOOM_BENCHMARK_BACKEND still accepts only magpie and bypass. Baseline, integrate, the concurrency sweep and specialist rebench are untouched.

    Evidence behind the defaults

    • Top 5. Simulate-mode DES ranking on held-out AgentX stack ladders: the top 5 contains the best config 94% of the time, the top 3 83% (1% median regret), and the single top pick 47%. The closed form scores 55% at top 3 with 39% regret. Top 5 is the smallest K that holds the best config almost every time; top 1 would discard the winner about half the time.
    • 15% simulate margin. Simulate mode's median output-throughput error on held-out AgentX configs was 9.7%. The margin sits above that, so only gaps wider than the projection's own error drop a variant.
    • Why invisible levers are always benchmarked. On real tuning choices (scheduler, kernel and env levers), simulate's rank correlation was 0.02.
    • 10% screen margin. On eight independent replicas, a gap this wide is one every replica reproduces.
    • Not yet shown: DES top-5 on a Hyperloom grid, and a real EXPLORE run with the filters on compared against one with them off.
  • Linked issue(s): none

  • Tests: added and updated. Commands run: pytest src/hyperloom/inference_optimizer/tests src/hyperloom/orchestrator, ruff check ., ruff format --check ., lint-imports, scripts/code_metrics.py --base-ref origin/main (passes). The full suites fail only tests that fail identically on main.

    • test_explore_executor.py:
      • a projected loser never reaches the benchmark subprocess, and the projection is priced for the session GPU
      • a launch that REVERTed before is skipped, and one that KEPT is measured again
      • a round whose only variant the store drops is answered (succeeded), not failed, and does not exhaust the grid
      • a launch known only by its image digest, with no engine version, is not keyed and is measured again
      • a revalidation is never skipped
      • a different image measures again
      • a decision round becomes an InferaSim anchor
    • test_explore_reuse.py: identity covers image, engine, overlays, envs and benchmark; each part of the identity changes the key; overlay content, not its path, is the identity; a stored REVERT is found and ages out; only a performance REVERT is recorded (never a KEEP or an accuracy REVERT); older schemas are ignored; the launch digest ignores priced envs and paths but not levers; a launch is not keyed unless both the image digest and the engine version are known.
    • test_explore_projection.py: top 5 by default, estimator mismatch, every spec priced for the session GPU, the stack's resolved mode reaching every projection.
    • test_inferasim_backend.py: DES argv and metrics, auto-mode resolution, no harvest in auto, anchor ladders and sanity, runtime conflicts, session-GPU pricing, HBM from the shared hardware table (MI308X included), resolve_preset taking the student of a distill and the most specific match, env levers separating launches, InferaSim not being a benchmark backend.
    • test_explore_screen.py: the screen prunes only beyond its margin and only when the probe resolved the deployment's kernels; failed or unreadable probes are kept; the baseline probe is the stack and each variant is probed on it; the probe command launches the materialized config; a variant that materialization refuses (I/O, YAML or a ValueError such as SpeculativeDecodingPinnedError) is benchmarked unscreened, and any other error raises.
  • Size/complexity triggers crossed: the diff budget. The PR changes about 2,916 production lines, almost all in new modules: the InferaSim bridge and anchor store (1,405), screen (386), pre-filter (350), projection router (427), measurement store (237) and the shared re-measure rules (34). explore.py changes by 34 lines each way: _ExploreRound gains _prefilter, called once before the loop, one recording call after each decision, the projection result field and the count of pre-filtered variants; the module stays at main's 1,845 lines. Every new function is under all limits. The bridge and anchors alone exceed the 1,000-line budget and depend on each other, so a split would not bring any piece under it. This needs the size-exception label.

    Directory size: all new modules live in the subpackage executors/explore_prefilter/, and main's measured_variants.py moved in with them, so this PR leaves the executors/ entry count unchanged.

  • If this simplifies or refactors:

    • STACK_REVALIDATE_SOURCE, is_stack_revalidation, _is_config_replay_variant and _is_noop_filter_exempt move from explore.py to explore_prefilter/_remeasure.py, so the no-op probe and the pre-filters share one definition of a launch that must be re-measured. explore.py re-exports them, so existing imports keep working.
    • Main's executors/measured_variants.py moves, unchanged apart from its relative imports, to executors/explore_prefilter/measured_variants.py. It holds the session's own verdicts on a variant, the in-session counterpart of the measurement store, and the move keeps the executors/ entry count unchanged. Its importers are updated: explore.py, loop/intent_router.py, test_explore_executor.py and test_delegate_denial_loop.py.
    • The bridge's own per-arch HBM table is gone; HBM comes from roofline_ceiling.HW_SPECS, which also covers MI308X and R9700.
    • Behaviour is unchanged and covered by the existing executor tests.
  • Observable effect: none unless a switch is set. With a switch set, the operator sees fewer variants benchmarked per round. Each removed variant appears as a SKIPPED_DEDUP row with its reason, a round the filters answered entirely is succeeded, and the round result carries a projection audit summary listing every variant's route and the GPU it was priced for.

  • Breaking changes: no

  • PR addresses single concern: yes. It reduces the number of variants EXPLORE benchmarks, without changing how a benchmarked variant is decided.

  • Root cause is upstream: no

PR #1494 -- feat(explore): route EXPLORE (and SWEEP) through InferaSim instead of booting every candidate

What it does: adds an inferasim benchmark backend (HYPERLOOM_BENCHMARK_BACKEND=inferasim) whose runner writes a Magpie-shaped report from Infera's serving projection (default simulate mode is analytical; benchmark mode calibrates against existing warmup anchors), plus an opt-in EXPLORE pre-screen, a shorter EXPLORE warmup round, single-node use of HYPERLOOM_MN_EXT_SERVICE_URL, and an Amdahl gate that skips kernel integrate runs whose ceiling is below the bar.

Blocking issues: 3

  1. [contract] Projected numbers decide KEEPs, and the backend replaces every measurement, not only EXPLORE [verified]
    Problem: build_benchmark_command (benchmark_backend.py L252-263) is the single entry for the baseline (baseline.py L3404, L3599) and for run_grid (EXPLORE, integrate_patch, conc_sweep, specialist rebench). With HYPERLOOM_BENCHMARK_BACKEND=inferasim all of them are answered by the projection. The runner writes an ordinary successful report (inferasim_runner.py L81-105, success=True), and no consumer outside the new modules reads analysis.backend / source. So KEEP/REVERT, current_best, cumulative_gain_validated, the journal, recipe-KB facts and the published Recipe are all computed from projected numbers exactly as if they were measured. The runner docstring states this intent ("every executor, collector, and the optimizer's gain math consume simulated runs unchanged ... real GPU time is spent only on the final validation"), but no final-validation step exists in the code.
    Impact: this contradicts the description ("EXPLORE benchmark backend", "does not change FRAMEWORK_AGENT or KERNEL_AGENT") and the test-plan item "Keep-or-revert still requires a real measured validation run (projection never decides a keep)". Source and kernel patches are invisible to the projection (the spec carries only TP/EP/PP/CONC/ISL/OSL/dtypes; cudagraph / aiter are hard-coded None, inferasim_bridge.py L443-444), so FRAMEWORK and KERNEL integrations project ~0% and can never be adopted. output_throughput is mapped from the decode throughput (inferasim_bridge.py L821), which is not Magpie's definition, so any mix with measured numbers (KB, warm replay) is skewed.
    Action: scope the backend to EXPLORE ranking and require a real measured run before any KEEP; keep baseline / integrate / rebench on the real backend; never write projected results into validated gain, journal KEEP rows or the KB.

  2. [wrong-behaviour] The KERNEL Amdahl gate is on by default, reads a field that does not exist, and can drop kernels that would KEEP [verified]
    Problem: HYPERLOOM_KERNEL_AMDAHL_GATE defaults to on (_kernel_decisions.py L170-172). The bar is getattr(state, "kernel_integrate_keep_threshold_pct", None) or 1.0 (L214); that field is defined nowhere in the repo, so the bar is always 1.0%. The real integrate bar is lower once a kernel is already in the stack: assess_integrate_performance KEEPs on a stack-incremental gain >= 0.5% (measurement/integrate_performance.py L55-76, STACK_INCREMENTAL_KEEP_THRESHOLD_PCT in kernel/request_handlers.py L66).
    Impact: from the second kernel on, candidates whose ceiling falls between 0.5% and 1.0% are never integrated. Example: a kernel at 1.8% of GPU time with a 1.5x micro speedup has a gate ceiling of ~0.91% (the un-inflated Amdahl bound is ~0.60%), both above the 0.5% stack bar, yet it is skipped against 1.0%. That contradicts the gate's own premise ("Skipping it cannot lose an optimization", L111-115), and last_gpu_pct comes from an earlier trace, so the share is understated once other kernels land. The skip leaves no observable record (last_integrate_skip_reason has no reader), and the description says KERNEL_AGENT is unchanged.
    Action: gate on the bar the integration will actually apply (including the 0.5% stack-incremental bar), or default the gate off; record the skip as a terminal kernel outcome; describe it or move it to its own PR.

  3. [desync] The description does not match what ships [verified]
    Problem:

    • The default mode is simulate (inferasim_bridge.py L29-36, L460): purely analytical, no anchor is read. benchmark mode only reads existing anchors (select_anchor, L475); nothing harvests one. "One serving anchor per regime", "harvests one short serving anchor per regime" with an empty store, and the 7.2% / 2.2% validation figures (all anchor-calibrated) do not describe the default path. In simulate mode only TP/EP/PP/CONC/ISL/OSL/KV dtype reach the projection (_build_argv, L708), so most EXPLORE levers project exactly the baseline.
    • The default Magpie path changes: the warm-decision warmup round now runs one wave of CONC by default (explore.py L117-141, L956-971; INFERENCE_OPTIMIZER_EXPLORE_SHORT_WARMUP defaults on). That contradicts "Default path unchanged" and is not mentioned.
    • magpie_remote_env() now honours HYPERLOOM_MN_EXT_SERVICE_URL at any node count (_multi_node_env.py L278-280); not mentioned.
    • Every test-plan item is unchecked, including the keep-safety item above.
      Impact: reviewers and operators enabling the backend are told it is EXPLORE-only, anchor-calibrated and leaves the default path alone; none of those hold.
      Action: make the description match the code (or the code match the description), and split the default-on warmup change and the Amdahl gate out or document them with their evidence.

Checked: benchmark_backend dispatch and its callers (baseline.py, run_grid users); inferasim_runner / inferasim_bridge end to end; consumers of the report's analysis block; the Amdahl gate against assess_integrate_performance; the EXPLORE warmup and screen hooks; _multi_node_env | Base: ae2c0c9 | Head: 2ee0cea

I've reworked the PR to address all three blocking issues.

1. Projected numbers deciding KEEPs
InferaSim is no longer a benchmark backend. Baseline, integrate, the conc sweep and rebench always use real measurements. In EXPLORE, InferaSim only helps choose which variants to benchmark. Its numbers never decide a KEEP or reach the journal or KB. Variants it can't model (scheduler flags, kernel/env changes, patches) are always benchmarked.

2. Amdahl gate
Removed from this PR.

3. Description didn't match the code
The short warmup and single-node external-server changes are also removed, so the default path matches main. The description now matches the code.

How EXPLORE picks what to benchmark
For each variant:

  1. If the exact same launch was measured before, reuse that result.
  2. If past measurements exist for this model and GPU, use them to calibrate InferaSim.
  3. Otherwise InferaSim ranks the variants, and the top 5 are benchmarked.

Everything is off by default.

Evidence
On AgentX, InferaSim's simulate mode (only) top 5 included the best config 94% of the time. It only ranks the kinds of changes tested there (TP/EP, concurrency, batch size, sequence lengths, KV dtype).

Testing
The full test suite passes, apart from tests that also fail on main in my environment.

PR #1494 -- feat(explore): route EXPLORE (and SWEEP) through InferaSim instead of booting every candidate

What it does: adds three opt-in pre-filters to ExploreExecutor: an InferaSim projection that drops variants projected decisively slower or outside the top 5 (HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION), a reduced-scale vLLM probe screen (HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN), and a store that replays an earlier paired measurement of the same launch instead of benchmarking it (HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_STORE). With HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_ANCHOR_STORE set, measured decision rounds are also recorded as InferaSim anchors.

Blocking issues: 5

  1. [V5] The head is not rebased and the required checks never ran [verified]
    Problem: head 57616a9 sits on merge base ae2c0c9 (2026-10-01); main is 479 commits ahead and GitHub reports the PR as conflicting. Only Analyze, Gitleaks and RTD ran at this head: the required code-metrics and pr-hygiene checks did not run, and neither did Tests or Lint. explore.py has changed on main (+348/-41) since the base.
    Impact: nothing in this PR has been tested against the code it would merge into.
    Action: rebase onto current main, push, and get the full check matrix green.

  2. [free:reuse-keep-without-measurement] A replayed stored measurement decides KEEPs, including resume revalidation [verified]
    Problem: with HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_STORE set, a store hit replaces run_grid with reused.as_result(...) (explore.py:1183-1191): the current anchor scaled by a stored gain (from this or an earlier session) is graded, can KEEP (keep entry at explore.py:1539) and becomes running_base_tput (explore.py:1549). The lookup (explore.py:998-1009) does not exempt source == "resume_stack_revalidate" (explore.py:542), whose purpose is to re-measure the saved stack, so a hit clears the pending revalidation. The rows carry decided_by: "reused_measurement", but nothing outside explore.py:1810 reads it, so writeback, current_best, the journal and the KB adopt the KEEP like a measured one.
    Impact: a stack can be adopted, and a resumed session declared revalidated, on a number not measured in this session; later variants in the round are graded against that synthesized anchor. The 2026-10-07 reply discloses reuse but not that a replay can KEEP or stand in for revalidation.
    Action: use a hit only to skip a variant that already REVERTed on the same launch, never to KEEP or to answer resume_stack_revalidate; or take the store out of this PR.

  3. [D12] ExploreExecutor.__call__ grows further past the complexity ceiling [verified]
    Problem: the change raises the cyclomatic complexity of ExploreExecutor.__call__ (explore.py:470) by 12, from 75 to 87 (ruff C901 at the merge base), by adding the screen, the opening-stack reuse pre-pass (explore.py:786-876), the projection call and the reuse branches to the per-variant loop.
    Impact: breaks AGENTS.md "Size is a design signal": a function whose cyclomatic complexity a change raises may not exceed 20. On main the unit is baselined at 76, so after the rebase the required code-metrics check will judge it worsened and fail unless baseline-raise is applied with a reason.
    Action: move the pre-filters into one function called before the loop (they already live in their own modules), so __call__ does not grow.

  4. [X2] Title and description describe a design that no longer ships [verified]
    Problem: the body documents HYPERLOOM_BENCHMARK_BACKEND=inferasim, "Magpie remains the default", one anchor per regime and the 491 -> 39.3 GPU-hour figures; at head test_inferasim_backend.py:24-28 asserts inferasim is not a backend. The switches that ship (HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION, HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN, HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_STORE and their sub-variables) appear nowhere in it. The title claims SWEEP; none of the 13 changed files touches it. The body is also silent on HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_MODE, which defaults to auto (inferasim_bridge.py:82) and switches to calibrated mode when the anchor store holds an in-regime anchor (inferasim_bridge.py:522-536).
    Impact: an operator enabling the feature is told the wrong switches and a cost model that is not what ships; this was item 3 of the previous review and is still open.
    Action: rewrite the title and description for the code at head: each switch, its default, what it drops or replays, and the evidence behind top-5 and the margins.

  5. [C4] Projections are priced for MI355X regardless of the session GPU [verified]
    Problem: projection is opt-in, but once on, route_variants receives no GPU (explore.py:879-888); the recipe and argv call gpu_arch() with no name (inferasim_bridge.py:479, inferasim_bridge.py:836), so unless HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_GPU_ARCH is set by hand the part is mi355x with 288 GB HBM (inferasim_bridge.py:100, inferasim_bridge.py:102). Measured anchors are recorded with the real session GPU (explore.py:1451, inferasim_bridge.py:1132).
    Impact: on MI300X / MI325X the KV fit and decode step of TP / concurrency variants are mispriced and drive drops, and the run's own measured anchors never match the mi355x recipe.
    Action: pass the session's resolved GPU into route_variants and derive the arch and HBM from it.

deferred: D7 -- _measured_group_key (inferasim_bridge.py:1094-1110) ignores envs and overlays, so decision rounds overwrite one another's anchor point and can move auto to calibrated mode

Projects a candidate's serving metrics analytically and returns the same
benchmark_report.json contract, so real GPUs are only needed where the kernel
regime changes. An anchor is reused across transport axes (TP/EP/PP, batch,
concurrency, sequence lengths); a dtype or attention-backend change is flagged
as needing a fresh one.

Real-weights anchors rank ahead of dummy-weight ones, whose synthetic MoE
routing flattens the decode curve: projected TPOT 30.7% -> 2.4% MAPE against
measured serving for gpt-oss-120B.

Three ways the backend could answer confidently from an anchor that did not
describe the candidate.

Speculative decoding was not parsed, so every mtp variant inherited a
plain-decode anchor -- worth 33-91% on DeepSeek-R1. All three framework
spellings now land on the regime axis. Corrupt anchors were selectable:
decode latency cannot fall as batch rises, and 18 of 62 artifacts on this
cluster fail that check, so they are rejected in favour of pure analysis.
DeepSeek-R1, DeepSeek-V2-Lite and MiniMax-M2 had no preset mapping.

Signed-off-by: Anshu Raina <Anshu.Raina@amd.com>
The gate reads whatever JSON sits in an anchor directory, and analysis output
lives alongside artifacts. A top-level list or scalar reached doc.get("sweep")
and raised AttributeError out of select_anchor instead of being rejected.

Signed-off-by: Anshu Raina <Anshu.Raina@amd.com>
The filter compared spec.model_path, a checkout path, against the artifact's
HuggingFace id. Those never match, so it selected nothing and then fell back
to the full entry list -- any workload could calibrate against any anchor.
Three different models returned the same decode step to two decimal places.

Names now go through regime.models_match, shared with the Infera launcher
rather than duplicated. An anchor with no recorded model is still allowed,
since a structural warmup names no checkpoint.

Signed-off-by: Anshu Raina <Anshu.Raina@amd.com>
A target arrives with a checkout path and a preset, and either one identifies
it. Matching only on the preset rejected DeepSeek-R1's own anchor, since
deepseek_v3 shares no spelling with its checkpoints; matching only on the path
would miss a bare preset name. Both are now tried.

Signed-off-by: Anshu Raina <Anshu.Raina@amd.com>
The first of each variant's two benchmarks exists to leave the server hot and
run the accuracy gate; its throughput is discarded. It still runs at full
length, five to ten waves of the concurrency.

One wave reaches steady state. Across six boots and 54 seed-to-seed
comparisons the first pass lands 0.97% faster than later ones -- the opposite
of warming, and inside the run-to-run spread.

The short warmup builds on the warmup variant the round already chose, so a
session-level --no-eval still holds on it.

Gated by INFERENCE_OPTIMIZER_EXPLORE_SHORT_WARMUP; an unreadable config falls
back to today's warmup.

Signed-off-by: Anshu Raina <Anshu.Raina@amd.com>
A kernel occupying f of GPU time and made S times faster cannot move
end-to-end throughput past 1/((1-f) + f/S). When that ceiling is below the KEEP
threshold, the integrate run boots a server to confirm arithmetic.

The gate carries a 1.5x margin on the measured GPU share, so a mis-attributed
profile does not discard a real win; unreadable share or speedup still runs the
benchmark.

Gated by HYPERLOOM_KERNEL_AMDAHL_GATE.

The projection is validated against real vLLM measurements out to 65,536
tokens of context and never across a node boundary, but past either line it
still returns a confident number -- the last such extrapolation hid a 46.3%
error until the sweep was run.

Projections now carry notes naming the axis being extrapolated along. These are
deliberately not error bars: the size of the error is the unknown.

_explore_screen.py adds an optional reduced-scale probe that can drop variants
before the round benchmarks them on the deployment. Off by default, it only
prunes, and prunes nothing unless probe and deployment agree on the kernels
they resolved -- the same flags do not give the two engines the same stack.

Magpie's client-only path is env-driven, but Hyperloom emitted that env only
for multi-node runs, so a single-node run could not target an externally
hosted engine -- an Infera router fronting vLLM/SGLang, say. The gate was
is_multi_node(), standing in for whether the server is ours to manage;
uses_external_server() asks that directly, keyed on
HYPERLOOM_MN_EXT_SERVICE_URL.

Both server_lifecycle eligibility checks now decline, since each would
otherwise reuse the very server being measured. Verified at unit level only.

The short-warmup path still named run_gv from the pre-rebase tree, so ruff
F821 failed and the explore executor tests never reached Magpie. Also runs
ruff format over the files this branch adds, and clears the CodeQL notes
(unclosed files, duplicate json imports, unused constants).

@araina-amd one more thing I'd like to have is the documentation of all the new env vars introduced in this PR. AGENTS.md's rule is that anything an operator can observe (and an env flag that changes default behavior certainly qualifies) gets spelled out, and docs/reference/environment-variables.md is where every other HYPERLOOM_* knob in this repo lives.

Rebased onto current main by merging it in (the PR already carries an earlier merge, so I kept the history the same shape), and the branch now merges cleanly.

The protection rules (is_stack_revalidation, _is_config_replay_variant, _is_noop_filter_exempt) moved to _explore_remeasure.py, so the no-op probe and the pre-filters share them, and explore.py re-exports them. With that, explore.py is 3 lines shorter than main's and the module-length baseline is lowered. code_metrics_baseline.txt is main's, plus that one lowered entry.

Env vars: every variable this PR reads is now in docs/reference/environment-variables.md, in a new EXPLORE pre-filters section. It has the default and behaviour of each, what each filter drops and under which reason, and which rounds and variants are never filtered. While writing it I found that HYPERLOOM_INFERASIM_EP, _PP and _KV_DTYPE never took effect: the projection reads each materialized config without the process env. They're removed rather than documented. I also made HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN accept on like the other switches, so the doc can state one rule.

Heads-up from the directory-size gate that landed in #2136 (code-metrics now fails a directory with more than 50 entries, counting the production modules directly in it and its subdirectories that hold one).

This PR adds 7 modules (_explore_prefilter.py, _explore_projection.py, _explore_remeasure.py, _explore_reuse.py, _explore_screen.py, inferasim_anchors.py, inferasim_bridge.py) directly to src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors, which is already over the limit and recorded in scripts/code_metrics_baseline.txt. Once the branch is updated with main, code-metrics will report that entry as worse and fail.

To pass, either move the new module(s) into a subpackage of src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors grouped by responsibility, or keep them where they are and add the baseline-raise label with the reason stated in the PR description (the gate then also expects the baseline entry raised to the new count).

I went with the subpackage rather than baseline-raise.

All seven new modules now live in executors/explore_prefilter/, without their _explore_ prefix (_prefilter, _projection, _remeasure, _reuse, _screen, inferasim_anchors, inferasim_bridge). A subpackage counts as one entry, and executors/ was already at its baselined 84, so one module also had to leave the directory for the count to stay put. I moved main's measured_variants.py in with them. It holds the session's own verdicts on a variant, so it is the in-session counterpart of the measurement store and decides the same thing: whether a variant needs benchmarking. Its four importers are updated: explore.py, loop/intent_router.py and two tests. executors/ stays at 84, so the directory entry is unchanged.

One heads-up for the next run: since #2025 added _profile_setup.py, main itself has 85 entries in executors/, against a baseline of 84. This PR leaves the count unchanged, but because it touches the directory, code-metrics will report it as worse as soon as the branch is updated with main. A trial merge confirms that. I'll leave the fix to main rather than pull an unrelated module into this PR, and will rebase once main is back under its baseline.

The only red check is pr-hygiene's diff budget (2,883 lines). Could one of you add size-exception? The reason is in the description's Size/complexity section.

PR #1494 -- feat(explore): opt-in pre-filters that drop EXPLORE variants through InferaSim before they are benchmarked

What it does: adds three opt-in pre-filters that EXPLORE runs once before its benchmark loop (explore_prefilter/_prefilter.py:253). They drop a variant before it is measured:

  • a cross-session store of performance REVERTs (HYPERLOOM_MEASUREMENT_STORE);
  • a reduced-GPU real-engine screen (HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_SCREEN);
  • an InferaSim projection that drops variants projected decisively behind the stack or outside the top 5 (HYPERLOOM_EXPLORE_PROJECTION).

A dropped variant becomes a SKIPPED_DEDUP row. No filter number reaches KEEP/REVERT, and stack revalidation and config replays are never filtered. The new modules and main's measured_variants.py live in executors/explore_prefilter/.

The earlier blockers are resolved at dd4ef9c:

  • 10-03 card. The inferasim backend, the Amdahl gate, the short warmup and the external MN env are gone.
  • 10-16 card. The store records only performance REVERTs and only drops a variant. The pre-filters are one call before the loop, within the complexity limits. The GPU comes from gpu_type. The branch merges cleanly with main ba689ef.
  • Directory gate. The new subpackage leaves the executors/ entry count unchanged.

Blocking issues: 5

  1. [free:all-dropped-round-fails] A round whose every variant a pre-filter drops is reported as failed [verified]
    Problem: _ExploreRound._prefilter replaces self.runnable with the survivors (src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore.py:1017). _result then sets answered = bool(self.runnable) and ... (:1722). When the store or the projection drops every variant, runnable and tested are empty and there are no winners, so the status is "failed", with no error class because run_stop is None.
    Impact: a round the pre-filters fully answered, for example every variant already REVERTed in an earlier session, is recorded as a failed EXPLORE task rather than an answered one. Main's in-session already_measured path counts the same situation as answered.
    Action: treat a round emptied by prefilter_variants as answered, or return a distinct status and error class. Add an executor test where the only variant is dropped.

  2. [X2] The measurement store keys a launch with only one of image digest and engine version; the docs say both are required [verified]
    Problem: measurement_identity returns None only when both are missing: if not (runtime.get("image_digest") or runtime.get("framework_version")) (src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore_prefilter/_reuse.py:181), and test_explore_reuse.py:53 pins that. docs/reference/environment-variables.md:667 says "A launch is never keyed, and so always measured, when the image digest or engine version is unknown", and the description says both are required.
    Impact: a session with an engine version but no image digest has its REVERTs recorded and reused across images. That is the cross-image reuse the docs promise not to do.
    Action: require both fields (and, and flip the test), or correct the docs and the description to the rule the code applies.

  3. [free:screen-probes-bare-engine] The screen compares each variant against the bare engine, not against the stack [verified]
    Problem: prefilter_variants passes only ctx.config_path to screen_variants, not the stack it holds (src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore_prefilter/_prefilter.py:266). The probe's --server-args are the backend pin plus variant.extra_server_args (_screen.py:204-207), so the stack's args, envs, remove_args and unset_envs never reach the probe. The description says the screen runs "the same flags ... behind the probed stack".
    Impact: with a non-empty stack, the screen ranks variants in a configuration the session is not in, and drops variants on that basis.
    Action: materialize the stack, and each variant on it, through ctx.materialize for the probe, as the projection does. Or leave the screen out of this PR, or state the limitation in the description and docs.

  4. [V5] pr-hygiene fails on the diff budget and the PR has no size-exception label [verified]
    Problem: the required pr-hygiene check fails at dd4ef9c: "diff budget exceeded: 2883 production Python lines changed (limit 1000) ... no 'size-exception' label". gh pr view shows no labels. The description says the PR needs the label.
    Impact: the PR cannot merge as it stands.
    Action: a maintainer applies size-exception with the reason in the description, or the PR is split. The screen (_screen.py) and the measurement store are independent of the projection and can each be a PR of their own.

  5. [X2] The description names modules that no longer exist and omits a module move [verified]
    Problem: the body points to _explore_prefilter.py, _explore_reuse.py, _explore_screen.py, _explore_projection.py and _explore_remeasure.py. At head these are explore_prefilter/_prefilter.py, _reuse.py, _screen.py, _projection.py and _remeasure.py. The refactor section does not mention that main's executors/measured_variants.py moved to src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore_prefilter/measured_variants.py, a move that also touches loop/intent_router.py.
    Impact: the description, which the release notes are built from, misstates the module layout.
    Action: update the module names, and state the measured_variants.py move and its reason in the refactor section.

deferred: [D2] inferasim_bridge.py:109 keeps its own HBM table (_ARCH_HBM_GB: mi300x, mi325x, mi355x), duplicating hbm_gb in roofline_ceiling.HW_SPECS, which also carries mi308x and r9700. On those boards --hbm-capacity-gb is not passed. Read the per-arch fact from its owner.

Checked:

  • all earlier cards and the author's replies;
  • explore.py _prefilter and _result; explore_prefilter/{_prefilter,_reuse,_screen,_projection,_remeasure,inferasim_bridge}.py;
  • the docs table and the description;

PR #1494 -- feat(explore): opt-in pre-filters that drop EXPLORE variants through InferaSim before they are benchmarked

What it does: adds three opt-in pre-filters that EXPLORE runs once before its benchmark loop (explore_prefilter/_prefilter.py:251):

  • a cross-session store of performance REVERTs;
  • a reduced-GPU real-engine screen;
  • an InferaSim projection.

A dropped variant becomes a SKIPPED_DEDUP row, and no filter number reaches KEEP/REVERT.

Since the previous review (dd4ef9c), 7302315 fixes three of its five blockers and the deferred item:

  • All-dropped round. It is now answered: prefilter_dropped feeds answered at explore.py:1735-1736, and a test pins it.
  • Store key. The store requires both the image digest and the engine version (_reuse.py:183), matching the docs.
  • Screen. It probes the materialized stack and each variant on it (_prefilter.py:264-270).
  • HBM table. It is read from roofline_ceiling.HW_SPECS.

Blocking issues: 3

  1. [V5] pr-hygiene still fails on the diff budget and the PR has no size-exception label [verified]
    Problem: the required pr-hygiene check fails at a38ff49: "diff budget exceeded: 2916 production Python lines changed (limit 1000) ... no 'size-exception' label". gh pr view shows no labels. The description (size section) says the PR needs the label. The count grew from 2883 since the last review.
    Impact: the PR cannot merge as it stands.
    Action: a maintainer applies size-exception, with the reason in the description, or the PR is split. The screen and the measurement store do not depend on the projection.

  2. [free:screen-broad-except] The new _launched helper adds a broad except Exception [verified]
    Problem: src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore_prefilter/_screen.py:280 catches Exception around materialize(...) and yaml.safe_load. The code it replaces caught (OSError, yaml.YAMLError). This breaks AGENTS.md Don't grow the debt: "No new broad except Exception / bare except -- catch the specific error or let it raise". The noqa reason does not change that.
    Impact: a programming error inside materialization (a TypeError or KeyError from a bad stack entry) is logged as a warning, and the variant is silently benchmarked unscreened.
    Action: catch the errors materialization and YAML loading actually raise, as the previous code did, and let anything else raise.

  3. [X2] The description still names modules that do not exist and omits the measured_variants.py move [verified]
    Problem:

    • The body still points to _explore_prefilter.py, _explore_remeasure.py, _explore_reuse.py, _explore_screen.py and _explore_projection.py. At head they are explore_prefilter/{_prefilter,_remeasure,_reuse,_screen,_projection}.py.
    • The refactor section does not mention that main's executors/measured_variants.py moved to explore_prefilter/measured_variants.py, a move that also changes the importer in loop/intent_router.py.
    • It also gives explore.py's size as 1,831 vs 1,834; both are 1,845 now.
      Impact: the release notes are built from this description, which misstates the module layout.
      Action: update the module names, state the measured_variants.py move and its reason, and correct the explore.py line count.

Checked:

  • the previous card's blockers against 7302315 and 1895230;
  • explore.py _prefilter/_result;
  • explore_prefilter/{_prefilter,_screen,_reuse,inferasim_bridge}.py;
  • environment-variables.md;
  • the pr-hygiene log at head;
  • the PR labels.

Ran:

  • test_explore_screen, test_explore_reuse, test_inferasim_backend at head (128 passed);
  • git merge-tree against origin/main (clean).

I have fixed them now, can you check?

@araina-amd thanks for the fixes at 49b1756. Main has moved since then, and this PR conflicts with it again, so I have not re-reviewed it yet.

The conflicts are all in src/hyperloom/orchestrator/actions/executors/explore.py, three hunks. A trial merge against main at 7d0c401 shows them:

  1. Imports, around line 66. Main now also imports controls_of from ._proposal_identity. This PR moves measured_variants into explore_prefilter/. Keep both changes.
  2. Around line 434. fix: judge explore variants and warm recipes by what they change about the running launch #1908 deleted _setting_already_holds and _touches_a_multi_value_flag, because it now judges a variant by the launch it materializes. This PR still carries them. Drop them, and check that nothing on the branch calls them any more. This one is not purely mechanical.
  3. The round summary, around line 1727. Main's answered/measured lines and this PR's pre-filter version (prefilter_dropped, TS_KILLED_OVERTIME) both changed the same lines. Keep this PR's version, merged with main's comment.

Please merge or rebase onto the latest main. I'll re-review once it merges cleanly.
