Hi, unfortunately /sm:highlight is only available for 1.21.5. However, what you can do is install the latest version of SeedMapper (so for 1.21.5), in combination with ViaFabricPlus (also for 1.21.5). Then, using ViaFabricPlus, you can connect to older servers, while still being able to use the latest features available for 1.21.5.

Regarding the visibility of the highlights, could you show an example (image/video) where the highlights are not clearly visible?

i guess maybe changing the colour of the highlights may help with visibiity but im guessing the highlights are visible but if they are overlapping the depth of each highlight may be difficult to see

it is possible to see that they are overlapping but maybe to a unexpirenced player this may not be obvious
or when overlapping with diamonds it may not be the most visible

It won't work with some shader packs
like: ComplementaryUnbound
Or maybe caused by some setting of it

If you are using Iris, have you updated to the latest version? There used to be a bug with Iris but that has now been fixed.
