Depending on the capacity of the dive computer, sooner or later old dives will get overwritten with newer dives, so after a while re-downloading may no longer be possible. When the raw dive data is still available in the application and the libdivecomputer parser is updated to support some new feature (for example to support both the Shearwater entry/exit GPS), a user would only need to re-parse the dives to add the new information.
