Menu bar icon shows Spaceman icon after unlocking computer

Whenever I restart or lock my computer, the menu bar icon is the
spaceman icon. I have to either click it or change spaces with a hotkey for the icon to change back to the space number.

The image shows what it looks like after logging in. Is this a bug or just a macOS limitation?
