[bug/feature] /backport tool wants to take patches from upstream instead newer already fixed rhel-10.2 branch #504

Description

What happened? What is the problem?

Using /backport skill, I wanted the tool to take patches from newer RHEL, which were tailored for RHEL already to save computing time and money, but the tool wanted to go upstream and go the full circle once more.

What did you expect to happen?

IMHO it should adjust commit from newer RHEL for older RHEL, instead of doing all the work again on upstream commits.

Steps to reproduce

1. use claude code 2.1.145, model opus 4.6
2. run /backport CVE-2026-35177 fix to rhel-9.8.0 and c8s
3. get to the part where the tool has to decide where to take patches from

  • There is an existing workaround that can be used until this issue is fixed.
