Example code please

Hi there - loving your efforts and giving back to the community with this - thank you!

I've been trying to get something working using it but can't seem to get my head around it - would you happen to have a super simple example of how to instantiate this? I can't work out where tinyusb integrates!

@shelson sorry we do not have an example here yet. We have working examples in the MIDI Association private GIT and it is my intent to port over a specific example here - just have not been able to get time.

I will be doing another integration this weekend and will look at kicking out a simple example for all.

Hi! I've been working with ESP32-S3 and MIDI since 2019. My current project, ESP32_Host_MIDI, is a USB MIDI hub that handles 9 simultaneous transports including MIDI 2.0/UMP on ESP32-S3:

One of my goals is to bring MIDI 2.0 into a music and robotics project for young students in Brasília, Brazil — ESP32-S3 is the right hardware for that context (affordable, capable, widely available), and tusb_ump is exactly the device-side piece I've been missing to make it real.

I went through the code: the usbd_app_driver_get_cb integration is clean, and the CFG_FIFO_MUTEX support lines up well with ESP32-S3's dual-core setup.

I'd love to contribute an ESP32-S3 example here. I have the hardware (LilyGO T-Display-S3) and a real MIDI 2.0 test environment to validate against. Happy to start simple and expand based on what's most useful.

That said, in looking closer I notice you are using RTP MIDI protocol. We may request you to add new Network MIDI or change to Network MIDI (depending on requirements) to be included on midi2.dev. Please consider. Michael

Hi @AmeNote-Michael , glad you got back. Good that you brought the team in too.

I have to be honest, I couldn't resist and already started digging into the tusb_ump codebase right after my first comment. I've been running tests on my lab with a LilyGO T-Display-S3 and I have a working example up and running — USB MIDI 2.0 device enumerating correctly, UMP packets flowing, display showing the negotiated Alt Setting in real time.

While going through the code I found a few compatibility issues with TinyUSB >= 0.16 (the version bundled with arduino-esp32 3.x is 0.20.1) — things like usbd_edpt_xfer() now requiring a 5th parameter, and tu_fifo_config() dropping the item_size argument. I've already patched those locally with version-guarded macros so it builds clean on both old and new TinyUSB. The architecture itself is really well thought out — the way usbd_app_driver_get_cb integrates as an app driver, the clean separation between ump_device and the TinyUSB core, and the CFG_FIFO_MUTEX support which is essential for ESP32's dual-core. Solid work, congratulations to everyone involved.

About the Network MIDI point — absolutely understood. The RTP-MIDI in my ESP32_Host_MIDI project is there because it's what the ecosystem uses today (macOS, Logic Pro, etc.), but I fully understand that midi2.dev is about moving forward with the MIDI 2.0 spec. Network MIDI 2.0 (UDP) is the right direction and I'd be very interested in working on that — ESP32-S3 with native WiFi feels like a natural fit for a reference implementation on microcontrollers. I'm happy to discuss what that would look like whenever the team is ready.

For now, my plan is to clean up the ESP32-S3 example and open a PR here on tusb_ump soon — USB device side first, keeping it simple and useful as a starting point for others. Would be an honor to contribute to a project that can really open the door for MIDI 2.0 adoption globally on embedded platforms.

It includes ESP32-S3 and RP2040/RP2350 working examples (Arduino IDE + PlatformIO), plus compatibility fixes for TinyUSB >= 0.16. Both examples demonstrate Alt Setting 0/1 negotiation, UMP Endpoint Discovery, and MIDI 1.0 fallback translation. Tested against Windows MIDI Services.

Also included the fixes from PR #10 (@fdetro) and #9 (@TrevorCash) since they were needed to compile on current toolchains. Full credit to them.

@shelson @MohaimenH this should help as a starting point for integration.

Hey everyone, quick update on what I've been working on.

While I work on the USB Host MIDI 2.0 side on ESP32-S3 (still not 100%, some details to sort out), I took the opportunity to put together a wireless demo to test the full stack.

Two T-Display-S3 boards communicating over ESP-NOW — a sender playing Bohemian Rhapsody and a receiver showing everything in real time. NoteOn/Off with 16-bit velocity, FlexChord, FlexKeySig, FlexTempo, per-note CC with harmonic context. Native UMP, no conversion to MIDI 1.0 at any point. ESP-NOW latency sits around 1ms, so it works well for real time.

With some adjustments I made to AM_MIDI2.0Lib (PR #31) and tusb_ump (PR #11) I got all this communication working. One thing fed the other.

The coolest part is that it's a full MIDI 2.0 stack running on a microcontroller — no desktop, no driver, no middleware. All on an $8 chip.

Once the USB Host side is solid I'll post more updates. @AmeNote-Michael @fdetro @shelson @MohaimenH if anyone wants to chat about ESP32 + MIDI 2.0 just let me know.
