I actually found this repository while looking for a lightweight cpp/webgpu/wasm library. Introducing a webgpu renderer would be awesome!

Highly speculative and vibe coded, but a partly working WebGPU renderer for threepp lives in https://github.com/markaren/threepp/tree/wgpu-rendering-laht

The implementation does not follow three.js.
I can't say what the future of this particular attempt will be, but it's very interesting.

The good stuff:

• Many of the examples just work.
• Compute shaders

The bad stuff:

• It's slower and uses much more memory than openGL (static 200+mb extra)
• No idea how it works.

Out of curiosity, how big is the WASM file? I recently started using C with wgpu.h, which gives really small files (<100kb) when compared to Rust, and I wondered how it would go with C++.

Right now it's 6000kb. A typical threepp OpenGL wasm is about 1200-2000kb.

Seems I used an outdated emscripten version for my initial try, which caused more pain than needed. So upstream is outdated. Anyhow, here is a live demo:
