Some suggestions about deleting notes #175

Description

@zach12211

Hi, here are a few changes I would like regarding the deletion of notes on macOS (I am on Sequoia 15.7.7):

  1. I see in Scratch's Shortcuts menu that there are two for deleting a note, "Delete" and "⌘ + Backspace." The Mac keyboard does have a Delete key, but this key functions as Backspace does on Windows keyboards, not as the Delete key on those keyboards would, which deletes text forward. For such forward deletion on a Mac keyboard, you hold the Fn (Function or globe) key and press Delete. Thus, for Mac, these are the actual shortcuts for deleting a Scratch note:
    Fn (globe icon) + Delete
    and
    ⌘ + Delete
    I would like to see the text in the Scratch Shortcuts menu changed to the correct keys.

Edit: Since I do assume you are referring to a Forward Delete key with your shortcut "Delete" in Scratch, as Fn + Delete functions as a Forward Delete and it work to prompt a note to be deleted, I should mention that, while the unextended Mac keyboard does not have a dedicated Forward Delete key, the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad does, and so if a Forward-Delete-based command should be kept for Mac users with that keyboard, then it should be listed in Scratch as "Forward Delete" or "⌦," not "Delete" (which refers to the Backspace-functioning Delete key), according to Apple's style guide.

  1. Now, besides that, if possible, I would also like to see the keyboard shortcuts changed themselves. I use only ⌘ + Delete to delete notes in this app, as it is the Command, not Fn key that native Mac keyboard shortcuts utilize, and so that is in muscle memory; but in most native apps (Apple apps, particularly), pressing only Delete is sufficient to create an effect. So in Mail or Notes, as examples, I can click an e-mail or note in the sidebar to make it active, press Delete, and it gets moved to a Recently Deleted folder. I would like to see the adoption of the native keyboard shortcut (simply, the Mac Delete key) over what is available now, Fn + Delete or ⌘ + Delete.

  2. Now, as to what happens after Delete or some other keyboard shortcut with the purpose of deletion is pressed. I'd like to see my notes (.md files) moved to the system Trash, and not deleted immediately, and to have the "Delete note?" message removed. In the native apps I mentioned in the last paragraph, Mail and Notes, pressing Delete is sufficient to move the item to their respective Recently Deleted folders, and no questions are asked (though on the first deletion, at least I know this to be true in Notes, a popup notifies the user that deleted items are moved to Recently Deleted). Thus in this app, it'd be nice to press Delete and have the .md file go to the system Trash, instead of having it deleted forever and having to be asked for that. Maybe instead of asking to "Delete note?" a popup could tell the user that deleted .md files are put in the system Trash.

3.1. If the suggestion to have the note moved to the Trash is not appreciated for whatever reason, and the "Delete note?" popup should thus be kept, the effect of the Return key in that popup should be changed. In macOS, pressing Return on a popup activates the "primary" button, which is usually the bolded, most eye-catching one. In the case of Scratch's "Delete note?" popup, the primary button to me is "Delete," as it is a darker gray. However, if Return is pressed, the popup goes away, as though I clicked "Cancel." In my opinion, I should be able to press Return at this menu and have the note already deleted, especially if you'd rather keep the longer ⌘ + Delete shortcut over simply pressing Delete. This suggestion, again, is only relevant if 3. is not wanted, as 3. would remove the popup entirely.

I thank you for the beautiful app and I hope you do consider these changes :)
