what does lock browser do?

that's for when you have a separate parition for the browser mounted at .config/mozila/.. it unmounts it and encrypts it, the reason it has a shortcut is so if someone ever wants to quickly borrow your system and you can't say no, you can quicly lock your browser and when they open the browser it opens with a fresh profile since your profiels are unmounted and encrypted.

why even use linux if you handover your entire browser to people, your banking, along with a whole host of things are accessible to people. this way i can lend my system for hours without having to worry abuot anything

yes, as long as they're normies they can't do anything. a slightly more techinal person will easily be able to access your data if they have the sudo password.
