Hi David!
Congratulations on your successful reanimation of the UPS V5!
I too had two of those devices back in 2021(?) but arranged to send them back to 52PI to investigate on the causes of the failures, the devices showed. Both had issues with restarting after a power loss. At that time firmware 7 or 8 was current.
Ok, now to my current problem:
I got hands on the new UPS Gen6. It ran about half a year or so without any issues.
Then I wanted to visualize its parameters in Homeassitant, fiddled around with some scripts (sane to my judgement) and suddenly the UPS was dead. No I2C addresses to be found on the bus any more, no power to the RPi.
I got in contact with 52PI, they asked me to provide some information and videos on several described actions (power on the UPS from batteries, from mains plug, test for I2C address, and so on...).
They then declared, that according to my explanations and the videos the device should not have get bricked. Ok, that was my assesment, too.
I tried to convince them to pass me the bootloader or the unencrypted firmware as HEX, but they declined.
So I have the hardware lying around, dead.
In the meanwhile I read about your success in writing a new firmware for the old V5 and now I'm asking, whether you think it is possible, to adapt your firmware to the new hardware to get it back to life.
Do you think I should give it a try (with your help. I'm no experienced programmer)?
All I have on hands is the register description in the Wiki for UPS Gen6.
Thanks!
Harald
