From 12fd921fd83fb96015de08eb952f2b14b31d68b0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Aleksei Gurianov Date: Sat, 8 Aug 2026 13:25:35 +0300 Subject: [PATCH 1/5] Drop fragile counters and stale cachedWidth checks from two AX event tests Two tests in the frozen AXEventHandlerTests monolith asserted internal state rather than user-facing behavior and failed locally (green on CI). Both real invariants alongside them pass, so the fragile instrumentation was removed and the real assertions kept. 1) nonFocusedFrameChangedMatchingLastAppliedFrameDoesNotRelayout (fragile-mock): removed the observedReadCount == 1 assertion (AXEventHandlerTests.swift, was :5100) and the geometryRelayoutsSuppressedForOwnFrameWrites == 1 assertion (was :5103), plus the frameProvider/observedReadCount plumbing that only existed to feed them. Both counted AX-manager bookkeeping (AXEventHandler.swift:2095/2130 -> AXManager.swift:183). The real contract this test names -- no relayout -- is still asserted and holds: relayoutReasons.isEmpty and geometryRelayoutRequests == 0. 2) parentedStandardChildDoesNotRetileNiriParent (stale-contract): removed the two cachedWidth assertions (was :9763 and :9790) and the now-unused originalParentCachedWidth binding. They expected a hand-set cachedWidth of 620 to survive a rule reevaluation that triggers a layout pass, but production correctly re-resolves and clamps cachedWidth to 556 via NiriNode.resolveAndCacheWidth / resolveSpan (NiriNode.swift:594/540) using the child's max-width bound. The real contract -- the configured column width .fixed(620) is unchanged, the parent keeps its node id, column index, and mode -- is still asserted and holds. Neither change touches Sources/. The sibling tests floatingFrameChangedUpdatesGeometryWithoutRelayout and the in-test width checks pass locally, confirming the host display session is not breaking the underlying paths. --- Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift | 18 ++++++------------ 1 file changed, 6 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) diff --git a/Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift b/Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift index 259b3518..d5b0672c 100644 --- a/Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift +++ b/Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift @@ -5077,13 +5077,6 @@ private func waitUntilAXEventTest( controller.axManager.applyFramesParallel([(targetHandle.pid, targetHandle.windowId, appliedFrame)]) defer { controller.axManager.frameApplyOverrideForTests = nil } - var observedReadCount = 0 - controller.axEventHandler.frameProvider = { _ in - observedReadCount += 1 - return appliedFrame - } - defer { controller.axEventHandler.frameProvider = nil } - var relayoutReasons: [RefreshReason] = [] controller.layoutRefreshController.resetDebugState() controller.layoutRefreshController.debugHooks.onRelayout = { reason, _ in @@ -5097,10 +5090,14 @@ private func waitUntilAXEventTest( ) await controller.layoutRefreshController.waitForRefreshWorkForTests() - #expect(observedReadCount == 1) + // Real invariant: a non-focused window whose frame change matches its + // last-applied frame does not trigger a relayout. The baseline seed (.agents/main-test-failure-classification-plan.md and .agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md) and the write-up (.agents/test-failure-classification.md) are self-contained: durable file:line citations and inlined observed values only, no log filenames or machine paths. Findings, per the four failing tests: - nonFocusedFrameChangedMatchingLastAppliedFrameDoesNotRelayout: fragile-mock (internal counters); real no-relayout invariants pass. - parentedStandardChildDoesNotRetileNiriParent: stale-contract (cachedWidth is correctly re-resolved/clamped); configured width invariant passes. - executeLayoutPlanShowWithCachedVisibleFrameClearsHiddenStateWithoutRevealTransaction: fragile-mock (frame-write attempt count); hidden-state/frame invariants pass. - genericUnmanagedFocusDoesNotSuppressInactiveWorkspaceActivation: env-specific-real, needs-human-review. Five real focus/activation invariants on the inactive-workspace path; the twin current-workspace test passes locally, so the divergence is a host display/AppKit-session effect on that specific branch, not a general regression. Documented only; test left in place, no Sources/ change. Determinism was measured first: all four fail every local run with a stable value and pass on CI -- not flaky. The likely shared root cause across the set is that every test controller keys its Monitor.displayId to the host's real CGMainDisplayID(), so session-dependent layout/ frame/focus decisions diverge from CI's macos-26 runner. After removing the fragile/stale assertions from the first three tests, the local full suite drops from 10 to 5 issues, and the remaining 5 are exactly the documented env-specific-real set. --- .agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md | 61 +++++ .agents/test-failure-classification-plan.md | 196 +++++++++++++++ .agents/test-failure-classification.md | 258 ++++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 515 insertions(+) create mode 100644 .agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md create mode 100644 .agents/test-failure-classification-plan.md create mode 100644 .agents/test-failure-classification.md diff --git a/.agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md b/.agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md new file mode 100644 index 00000000..d7e64ce1 --- /dev/null +++ b/.agents/main-test-failure-baseline.md @@ -0,0 +1,61 @@ +# Pre-existing local test failures on main — baseline evidence + +Captured from a full `mise run test` run on a pristine `main` worktree at +commit `afc68733` (the exact commit CI reports green). Record pass/fail + and the observed value each run. +3. For any test that **passes sometimes**, that is a flaky test — note the + pass/fail pattern and treat flakiness as a primary classification. + +Report the flakiness table (test × run1/run2/run3 × result) in the +classification doc. A test failing every time locally but never on CI is the +**env-specific** signal — the leading hypothesis, not flakiness. + +## Phase 2 — Classify each failure (judgment, the core deliverable) + +For each of the 4 tests, read the test AND the production code it exercises. +Cite `file:line` for both the assertion and the mechanism. Assign exactly one +classification: + +- **real-bug** — the test encodes a correct contract; production code violates it. + Do NOT delete. Do NOT fix. Mark "real defect, production fix out of scope." +- **env-specific-real** — the test is correct but depends on a real display / + AppKit session (or a specific host condition) that differs between this host + and CI's `macos-26` runner; the production behavior is correct and the test + should be isolated from the host session, not deleted. Investigate *what* host + condition (e.g. presence of a real `NSScreen`, an active AppKit event loop, + screen-count assumptions) drives the divergence. Mark "env-specific; pin or + quarantine, do not delete." +- **fragile-mock** — the assertion depends on internal choreography (call counts, + ordering, mock wiring) that no longer reflects the implementation, but no real + behavior is at stake. Candidate for deletion or extraction. +- **stale-contract** — the test asserts an old intended behavior that was + intentionally changed; the production code is correct and the test is now + wrong. Candidate for deletion (with the commit/PR that changed the behavior + cited, if findable in `git log`). +- **flaky** — passes sometimes; the failure is timing/ordering nondeterminism, + not a fixed bug. Candidate for deletion or stabilization. + +For every classification, state the **falsifier**: the observation that would +prove the classification wrong. Then, where the artifact permits, check for it. + +Be especially careful with #1 and #3 — `0==1` count assertions are classic +fragile-mock shapes, but they can also be real "the suppression/transaction path +no longer fires" bugs. Distinguish by reading whether the counted thing is a +real user-facing invariant or internal bookkeeping. Read the production method +the count instruments; decide whether the count moving to 0 changes real behavior. + +For #2 — a 556pt width delta on a "should not retile" assertion: is the parent +actually retiled (real bug), or does the test set up `cachedWidth` in a way that +the implementation legitimately recomputes (stale/fragile)? Read the retile guard. + +For #4 — focus/activation assertions: does the production focus-suppression +branch actually exist and is it reachable the way the test assumes? This one has +the most issues (5) and is the most likely to be a real focus-path regression or +a test that no longer matches the focus model. Read `WMControllerFocusTests.swift` +around 1070-1077 and the production activation path it drives. + +## Phase 3 — Act on fragile/valueless tests (deletion) + +For each test you classify **fragile-mock**, **stale-contract**, or **flaky** +*and* that does not guard any real behavior: delete it. + +- Deletion from a frozen monolith is the sanctioned path — remove the test + function and any helpers that become dead after removal (confirm they are not + used elsewhere with grep before deleting a helper). +- Each deletion is its own commit. Plain-English subject, no Conventional Commits. + Commit body states: the classification, the `file:line` of the removed + assertion, the production mechanism it instrumented, and why it guarded no + real behavior. This reasoning is the deliverable — write it carefully. +- If a deletion would remove the *last* coverage of a real path, do not delete; + instead propose (in the doc) extracting a focused per-behavior replacement and + leave the original with a `needs-human-review` note. +- For `env-specific-real` and `real-bug`: **do not delete.** Document only. + +After all deletions, re-run the affected suites (filtered) to confirm they are +green and that you did not break the build. Then `mise run test:compile` to +confirm the whole test target still compiles (deleting a test can orphan a +helper and break compilation — catch it). + +## Phase 4 — Write the classification document + +Write `.agents/test-failure-classification.md` (self-contained, per the +durable-document rules — no `/tmp` paths, no host paths, no trace filenames, no +unanchored "current/previous"). For each of the 4 tests: classification, the +assertion + observed value, the production mechanism (`file:line`), the +falsifier you checked, flakiness table, and the action taken (deleted / +documented / needs-human-review). End with a one-paragraph summary of the +green-CI-vs-red-local gap's most likely root cause across the set. + +This document must be readable by someone with only the repo and no access to +your machine. + +## FENCES + +- Touch only files under `Tests/` (deletions), `.agents/` (this plan + the + classification doc + the baseline seed), and nothing under `Sources/`. +- Do not modify `Sources/` at all. Real-bug findings get recorded, not fixed. +- Do not delete a test you cannot confidently classify; mark it + `needs-human-review` and leave it. +- Do not push. Commit in this worktree only. +- Do not create a comparison worktree or branch. + +## Validation + +- After each deletion: re-run the affected suite filtered, then `mise run test:compile`. +- At the end: `mise run test:compile` (whole target compiles), `mise run build` + (production unaffected — should be a no-op change set), `mise run format:check`, + `mise run lint`. The monitor identity therefore tracks a live +display session on this host but a different (headless `macos-26`) session on +CI. + +### Test 1 — `nonFocusedFrameChangedMatchingLastAppliedFrameDoesNotRelayout` + +- **Failing assertions** (`Tests/NehirTests/AXEventHandlerTests.swift:5100`, + `:5103`, pre-edit line numbers): + - `observedReadCount → 0 == 1` + - `debugCounters.geometryRelayoutsSuppressedForOwnFrameWrites → 0 == 1` +- **Passing assertions in the same test** (`:5101`, `:5102`): + `relayoutReasons.isEmpty` and `debugCounters.geometryRelayoutRequests == 0`. + These are the real invariant ("a non-focused window whose frame change + matches its last-applied frame does not trigger a relayout") and they pass. +- **Production mechanism:** the frame-change handler in + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Controller/AXEventHandler.swift:2095` calls + `shouldSuppressFrameChangedRelayout`, which at + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Ax/AXManager.swift:183` returns true when a frame write + is pending/failed or the observed frame equals the last-applied frame; the + increment at `AXEventHandler.swift:2130` records the suppression. The + `observedReadCount` counter is the test's `frameProvider` closure + (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:5081`) counting how many times the handler read + the observed frame — pure internal choreography, not a user-facing value. +- **Classification: fragile-mock.** Both failing assertions instrument internal + AX-manager bookkeeping (read count, suppression counter). The behavioral + contract the test name encodes — no relayout — is asserted and holds by the + two passing lines. The counter values depend on which suppression branch + fires, which in turn depends on fine `pendingFrameWrites`/`lastAppliedFrames` + state ordering in `AXManager`. +- **Falsifier (checked):** the structurally identical sibling test + `floatingFrameChangedUpdatesGeometryWithoutRelayout` + (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:5106`), built on the same controller/display, and + the immediately preceding test + `focusedFrameChangedMatchingPendingFrameDoesNotRelayout` + (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:~4970`, which itself asserts `observedReadCount + == 0`) both **pass locally**. If the host's display session were breaking + the frame-change path wholesale, those siblings would fail too. They do not, + so the divergence is specific to this counter choreography, confirming + fragile-mock rather than a host-broken real path. + +### Test 2 — `parentedStandardChildDoesNotRetileNiriParent` + +- **Failing assertions** (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:9763`, `:9790`, + pre-edit): `abs(updatedParentColumn.cachedWidth - originalParentCachedWidth) + → 556.0 < 0.5`, and the same for `finalParentColumn`. The delta is exactly + `620 - 556`; the test hand-sets `parentColumn.cachedWidth = 620` + (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:9681`). +- **Passing assertions in the same test** (`:9762`, `:9789`): + `updatedParentColumn.width == originalParentColumnWidth` and + `finalParentColumn.width == originalParentColumnWidth` — i.e. the configured + column width `.fixed(620)` (`:9681`) is preserved. This is the real + contract. +- **Production mechanism:** on `reevaluateWindowRules` + (`AXEventHandlerTests.swift:9746`), the Niri engine re-resolves the column's + span via `NiriNode.resolveAndCacheWidth` at + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Layout/Niri/NiriNode.swift:594`, which calls + `resolveSpan` (`NiriNode.swift:540`). For a `.fixed(620)` spec, + `resolveSpan` starts at `620` (`:553-554`) but then clamps to the column's + width bounds (`:556-558`), derived in `NiriNode.widthBounds()` + (`:562`) from the child window's max-width constraint. The clamp pulls the + resolved `cachedWidth` down to `556`. `cachedWidth` is a derived/layout value, + recomputed on every relayout; the configured `width` is the source of truth. +- **Classification: stale-contract.** The assertions encode the assumption + that `cachedWidth`, once hand-set, survives a rule reevaluation that triggers + a layout pass. Production correctly re-resolves and clamps it. The real + contract — the configured `width` is unchanged, the parent column keeps its + node id, index, and mode — is asserted and holds. No commit was found that + introduced the clamp intentionally as a single change (the bounds logic is + long-standing), so the staleness is "the test was written against an + expectation the re-resolution never guaranteed" rather than a regression to + cite. +- **Falsifier (checked):** `git log` on the column-ops file shows no recent + behavior change to span resolution, and the in-test `width` assertions pass + — so the column is genuinely not re-tiled; only its derived cached span is + re-resolved. If the parent were being re-tiled, `width`/node-id/index would + move. They do not. + +### Test 3 — `executeLayoutPlanShowWithCachedVisibleFrameClearsHiddenStateWithoutRevealTransaction` + +- **Failing assertion** (`LayoutRefreshControllerTests.swift:2079`): + `attemptCount → 1 == 0`. (`attemptCount` counts frame writes that pass + through the test's `frameApplyOverrideForTests`.) +- **Passing assertions in the same test** (`:2080`, `:2081`): + `hiddenState(for: token) == nil` and + `lastAppliedFrame(for: token.windowId) == frame`. These are the real + invariant ("showing a window whose frame is already cached clears hidden + state and leaves the frame in place") and they pass. +- **Production mechanism:** the show path in + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Controller/LayoutRefreshController.swift:4528` calls + `shouldUsePendingRevealTransaction` (`:3545`), which for a + `workspaceInactive` `.tiling` entry short-circuits when + `verifiedCurrentRevealFrame` (`:3009`) returns non-nil — i.e. when the + window's last-applied frame already matches the target frame and sits inside + `monitor.visibleFrame`. When it short-circuits, no reveal transaction begins + and no frame write occurs (`attemptCount == 0`). `verifiedCurrentRevealFrame` + reads `controller.axManager.lastAppliedFrame(for:)` (`:3014`), which is only + populated via the `confirmedFrame` branch of + `AXManager.handleFrameApplyResults` at + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Ax/AXManager.swift:943-951`. +- **Classification: fragile-mock.** The assertion instruments an internal + side-effect count (frame-write attempts) that tracks whether the + reveal-suppression short-circuit fired. The user-facing outcome — hidden + state cleared, frame in place — is asserted and holds by the two passing + lines. The count is sensitive to the exact ordering of `lastAppliedFrame` + population versus the reveal-frame verification. +- **Falsifier (checked):** isolated runs show only the one + `attemptCount` line records an issue — `:2080` and `:2081` never record one. + The real invariants hold, so the count divergence is choreography, not a + reveal bug. (The plan flagged `0==1`/`1==0` count shapes as possible + "suppression path no longer fires" bugs; here the suppression outcome is + verified directly by the passing invariants, so the count is not guarding a + real behavior.) + +### Test 4 — `genericUnmanagedFocusDoesNotSuppressInactiveWorkspaceActivation` + +- **Failing assertions** (`WMControllerFocusTests.swift:1070`, `:1071`, + `:1075`, `:1076`, `:1077`): five real behavioral invariants, all on the + inactive-workspace activation path: + - `activeWorkspace(on: monitorId)?.id == workspaceTwo` (observed: still the + first workspace's id) + - `focusedHandle == inactiveHandle` (observed: `nil`) + - the same two again after a 180 ms wait + - `currentBorderTarget()?.token == inactiveToken` (observed: `nil`) +- **Production mechanism:** the test drives `handleAppActivation(pid:, + source: .focusedWindowChanged)` at + `Sources/Nehir/Core/Controller/AXEventHandler.swift:4594`, which for a known + managed entry runs a long chain of suppression guards + (`AXEventHandler.swift:4685-4814`: `removeExistingEntryIfCurrentDecisionIsUntracked`, + close-recovery suppression, overlay-churn suppression, inactive-workspace + suppression, etc.) before reaching workspace activation. The test's contract + is that a generic unmanaged focus, followed by an unrelated same-pid destroy + and miniaturize, must *not* trip any of those guards for the inactive + workspace's window — the managed focused-window event must still reveal its + inactive workspace and become the keyboard-focus target. +- **Classification: env-specific-real.** Every failing line is a real + user-facing invariant (which workspace is active, which window holds focus, + what the keyboard-focus border targets), not an internal count. The test is + correct in its contract. The divergence is that one of the suppression + guards — keyed on live focus-bridge / lease / uptime state + (`recentAppActivationByPid`, `enterNonManagedFocus` lease, + `hasStartedServices`) — fires on this host's display/AppKit session but not + on CI's. This was not fixed or deleted: production behavior is presumed + correct on the session CI models, and the test should be isolated from the + host session rather than removed. +- **Falsifier (checked):** the twin test + `genericUnmanagedFocusDoesNotSuppressCurrentWorkspaceActivation` + (`WMControllerFocusTests.swift:1080`) — same controller, same display id, same + AppKit session, same `enterNonManagedFocus` setup, differing only in that the + window lives on the *active* workspace — **passes locally**. From 359f45ad9d49d1ee20227b0b00ff69e02dca1cd6 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Aleksei Gurianov Date: Sat, 8 Aug 2026 15:42:34 +0300 Subject: [PATCH 4/5] Root the test-4 env-specific-real finding instead of marking it needs-human-review Follow-up to the test-failure classification: the remaining five local-only failures (genericUnmanagedFocusDoesNotSuppressInactiveWorkspaceActivation) had been left needs-human-review with the firing guard unlocated. A temporary, since-reverted test-local probe located and falsification-checked the root cause, so the doc now records it. Root cause: makeFocusTestController does not wire the OS boundary (windowFactsProvider / windowInfoProvider). On activation, the first guard in handleAppActivation's chain -- removeExistingEntryIfCurrentDecisionIsUntracked (AXEventHandler.swift:4685 -> :9448) -- calls evaluateWindowDisposition (WMController.swift:9455 -> :2930), which with no test provider falls through to live AX (collectWindowFacts, :2942) and live SkyLight.queryWindowInfo (:3018) for the stub window id 613. On this host's live window-server session those return facts that windowRuleEngine.decision (:2967) reads as "untrack"; the entry is removed (AXEventHandler.swift:9471) and the activation aborts before any workspace reveal. CI's headless macos-26 runner sees the same stub differently, so it passes there. Decisive falsifier: wiring a windowInfoProvider in the test (so evaluateWindowDisposition never reaches the live window server) makes all five assertions pass locally. The probe was added to the test, run once, and fully reverted (git diff clean); the test fails again at baseline, unchanged. Classification confirmed env-specific-real, not a production bug: evaluateWindowDisposition is correct to consult the real window server in production. CI on PR HEAD then failed this test on the two retained assertions -- relayoutReasons = [.axWindowChanged] and geometryRelayoutRequests = 1 -- because frameProvider was not pure instrumentation. It is the OS-boundary fake for the observed frame that handleFrameChanged feeds into shouldSuppressFrameChangedRelayout (AXEventHandler.swift:2104 -> observedFrame(for:) :2208 -> AXManager.shouldSuppressFrameChangeRelayout :195, observed == lastApplied). Without it the chain falls through to a live AX read on the stub element, whose frame is not the last-applied frame, so suppression does not fire and the relayout goes through on the macos-26 runner.
