Support for OpenAI Codex CLI / Codex as a provider?

Hi, thanks for building OpenAlice — the architecture looks very interesting.

I noticed OpenAlice currently supports multiple agent/provider backends.
I wanted to ask whether there is already support, or any roadmap, for integrating OpenAI Codex / Codex CLI as a provider backend.

A few specific questions:

1. Is Codex currently supported in any form?
2. If not, would you consider adding Codex as a provider option?
3. Are there any architectural constraints that make Codex integration difficult compared with Claude Code CLI or other supported providers?
4. If provider integration is already modular, would a community PR for Codex support be welcome?

My use case is to evaluate OpenAlice with a Codex-based workflow and compare it with other coding/agent backends.

Hi @l02162010, thanks for the interest and the well-structured question!

Codex CLI support is on our roadmap. To address your questions:

1. Not yet supported, but we've been thinking about it.
2. Yes, we'd like to add it as a provider option.
3. The provider architecture is modular, so it's feasible — but the details around tool injection and context management differ quite a bit from our existing backends, so there's design work to do.
4. We're not accepting external PRs at this time — this is primarily a security consideration, and the project is still in an early, unstable phase where interfaces are changing rapidly. We're not PR-ready yet.

That said, if you could share some details in this issue about how Codex CLI handles tool injection and context management (e.g., how tools are registered, how conversation context is passed and maintained), that would really help accelerate our implementation.

That all makes sense, especially given the security considerations and the fact that the project is still evolving quickly. The modular provider architecture sounds very promising, and I’m glad to hear that Codex CLI support is already on the roadmap.
