Why are you nominating this person?
I have been working in the GIS domain for the past 6 years as a developer. After attending the last FOSS4G 2024 in Brazil I have decided to shift gears and work on the community side of things. I am actively volunteering for OSGeo doing various activities such as handling discourse conversations and sharing my few cents of opinion here and there. I have just become active in OSGeo UK and working in "Geobharat", a geospatial community back in India.
If it's 10 minutes - 4 hours / week, it's something I can handle as all my focus is as I said is on "Community Building" this year.
What do you currently like about the community?
I like that it has space where people can connect and talk about GIS things. Slack is very accessible to everyone and anyone can start a conversation on day 1.
What would you consider changing about the community, if anything?
I have been a long time lurker/member of "the Spatial Community" but can't say how I have helped, or it has helped me.
What I would change:
- Add more information on the website about the community, and it can do for an individual
- Although Slack is accessible it's still a closed platform where the conversations eventually die, radical solution is moving to discourse but that raises the entry bar. A middle solution could be a monthly newsletter summarizing an information about various topics discussed on Slack which can be preserved as archives on the website (hello RSS feed)
- Although having passion about GIS is great, at the end of the day everyone has to pay bills. A small focus on the community should be to actively encourage people to share jobs and opportunities in GIS domain.
And I can have more suggestions but not sure what "the spatial community" is about
