From a444e4256d9b9a2349d187f792dc4bfa2dfba533 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Mark Stuart Date: Mon, 28 Sep 2026 04:56:06 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 1/7] test: verify Live grouper disposal on a shared Python WebSocket (#3977) When two transcript groupers observe the same Live dispatcher, callers must be able to detach and close one without stopping the other or losing the event stream. The existing grouper tests covered its own listeners and timers but did not exercise an attached connection. This tests both sync and async clients over a real local WebSocket. It checks that the first grouper cancels its active timer, typed and wildcard observers keep receiving the original values and future metadata, the second grouper continues accumulating, and the same socket accepts a post-disposal update. The peer waits for explicit caller teardown. Tests only; no generated or API changes. Validation: - 238 Live tests passed on Pydantic 2.12.5 and 238 on 1.10.26. - After typing the close callbacks and checking only event IDs present on the wire: 14 socket-role and grouper tests pass; Pyright reports 0 errors on the affected file. - Repository-configured `mypy .` passes across 1,920 source files; Ruff check, format and diff checks pass. --- tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py | 143 ++++++++++++++++++++++++- 1 file changed, 142 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py b/tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py index e3b0ae5cdc..40de79fed2 100644 --- a/tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py +++ b/tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py @@ -9,10 +9,17 @@ from websockets.sync.server import ServerConnection from openai import OpenAI, AsyncOpenAI -from openai.types.live import SessionStartedEvent, SessionUpdatedEvent, OutputTranscriptDeltaEvent +from openai.types.live import ( + ServerEvent, + SessionClosedEvent, + SessionStartedEvent, + SessionUpdatedEvent, + OutputTranscriptDeltaEvent, +) from openai.resources.live.live import LiveConnection, AsyncLiveConnection from openai.resources.live.forks import ForksConnection, AsyncForksConnection +from .helpers import FakeClock, Recording, ClockGrouper, AsyncClockGrouper from ..responses.test_websocket_session import script_server @@ -157,3 +164,137 @@ def script(socket: ServerConnection) -> None: assert isinstance(async_updated, SessionUpdatedEvent) assert async_updated.client_event_id == "caller-update" assert async_updated.session.id == "live_fixture" + + +@pytest.mark.parametrize("mode", ["sync", "async"]) +async def test_disposed_grouper_leaves_dispatcher_other_observers_and_socket_usable(mode: str) -> None: + session = {"id": "live_fixture", "model": "gpt-live-1", "status": "active", "expires_at": 123} + first_clock, second_clock = FakeClock(), FakeClock() + transcripts = [ + { + "type": "session.output_transcript.delta", + "event_id": f"part-{index}", + "delta": value, + "start_ms": index * 200, + "end_ms": (index + 1) * 200, + } + for index, value in enumerate(["One", " two", " three", " four"]) + ] + observed: list[ServerEvent] = [] + typed: list[OutputTranscriptDeltaEvent] = [] + + def script(socket: ServerConnection) -> None: + assert json.loads(socket.recv(timeout=5)) == { + "type": "session.start", + "event_id": "caller-start", + "session": {"model": "gpt-live-1"}, + } + socket.send(json.dumps({"type": "session.started", "event_id": "started", "session": session})) + for event in transcripts[:2]: + socket.send(json.dumps(event)) + # A typed or queued send could also be replayed on reconnect even after reaching the server. Preserve the manager's queue and release only attempted writes on failure or cancellation; never-attempted messages remain in order. Other endpoints retain the shared queue's existing defaults. Six sync/async real-socket regressions fail on the base and pass with this change, covering empty queues and interrupted pre-open/direct sends. A focused cancellation regression verifies in-flight bounds and retained messages. A successful upgrade alone does not reset it. - OpenAI and Azure refresh caller-provided credentials on the replacement and preserve the connection's path, query, headers and disabled compression. Azure bearer mode never also sends an API key. - Cancelling a pending async receive leaves the next event and the socket usable. Tests only; no source, signatures, defaults, dependencies or generated code changed. Uses the existing real server fixture and fake credentials. The new file applies independently of the in-flight queue fix (#3978). Verified 179/179 relevant WebSocket, redirects and send-queue checks on each of Pydantic 1 and 2; Ruff check/format and git diff pass. Trusted budget unchanged at 7746/10000. --- tests/lib/test_realtime_websocket_recovery.py | 252 ++++++++++++++++++ 1 file changed, 252 insertions(+) create mode 100644 [PATCH 4/7] fix(live): preserve caller queues and prevent uncertain WebSocket replay (#3980) If a Live connection opened with an empty manager queue, iterator recovery lost the caller's queued messages and byte budget. A typed command could also be sent again after the first socket actually received it but its send raised. Keep the passed queue even when empty and drop only the attempted message on a failed send/flush, leaving unattempted messages ordered. This matches the merged Realtime handling. Primary, fork and sideband fixes are separate commits for review. No startup, auth, default reconnect, imports or public method signatures change. Direct send errors still raise; queued flush failures still log the existing warning. The Live helper notes describe the recovery and recording-error policy. Validation: - Baseline: 337 Live/redirect tests pass under both Pydantic 1 and 2. - Reproduced all 18 queue/replay failures using actual loopback wire delivery, then 42 role tests pass, including per-role error/unknown-event/close ordering and helper disposal. - Final 399 Live, protected dial, Realtime and send-queue tests pass in each Pydantic lane; Ruff and full SDK Mypy (1,865 source files) pass. - Trusted main budget/isolation pass: 7,826/10,000 with unchanged generated snapshot. Independent review found only the queued-error doc clarification, which is included. --- src/openai/lib/live/README.md | 33 +++ src/openai/resources/live/forks.py | 20 +- src/openai/resources/live/live.py | 20 +- src/openai/resources/live/sideband.py | 20 +- tests/lib/live/test_websocket_roles.py | 311 +++++++++++++++++++++++-- 5 files changed, 341 insertions(+), 63 deletions(-) create mode 100644 src/openai/lib/live/README.md diff --git a/src/openai/lib/live/README.md b/src/openai/lib/live/README.md new file mode 100644 index 0000000000..55394b91ea --- /dev/null +++ b/src/openai/lib/live/README.md @@ -0,0 +1,33 @@ +# Live WebSocket lifecycle + +`client.live.connect()` and `client.live.forks.connect(session_id=...)` leave +startup to the caller: send `connection.session.start(...)` and wait for +`session.started`. A sideband connection created by +`client.live.sideband.connect(session_id=...)` attaches to an existing session. +It does not send a start or require a new `session.started`; an attachment's +short replay is not a complete session snapshot. + +Direct `recv()` and `recv_bytes()` calls report transport errors to their +caller. Iterator reconnection is available only when an `on_reconnecting` +callback was explicitly supplied. The callback controls retry and can update +credentials or query parameters. A new socket is not proof that the previous +Live session, recording, or application state was restored. Applications own +their recovery decision and any necessary startup or state reconstruction. +Don't use multiple physical readers: a dispatcher owns the read loop while it +runs. Detaching or closing one transcript grouper doesn't cancel another +observer or the connection. + +All modes preserve the manager's caller-configured `max_queue_size`, including +if the queue was empty at connection time. Only messages that haven't been +attempted on a socket remain eligible for flushing after a retry. A direct send +exception is raised to its caller and cannot prove the server didn't receive +that message. A failure while flushing an already queued message still logs a +warning, as before; it cannot be raised at the original queueing call. Neither +failed attempt is automatically retried. Unattempted pre-open messages and +messages explicitly queued during recovery remain in order within their +existing budget. No automatic session reopening or restoration is implied. + +Treat each wire error as an event to handle, not as a successful session result. +In particular, preserve `session_storage_failed` if `session.closed` follows; +the close doesn't mean that recording storage succeeded. Unknown events and +fields are preserved for callers that need them. diff --git a/src/openai/resources/live/forks.py b/src/openai/resources/live/forks.py index e27846290e..8deb5fbab5 100644 --- This adds `detailed_snapshot()`, an independent mutable view of observed fields and sparse indexed output/content/annotation rows. Existing immutable, hashable `snapshot()`, raw events, and the exact server terminal response keep their contracts. Done events replace supplied logprobs and whole part/item/response events replace the relevant projections. Missing and null are preserved, and unknown parts or tool fields remain provisional data instead of fabricated validated final models. Annotations only enrich a matching item on the bound lane; they cannot bind a turn or retire an unrelated item. The helper still never reads, sends, runs tools or changes sockets. Handwritten helper, docs and tests only. Validation: - Before change: 12 new real-wire tests failed. Review regressions reproduced: 8 failures (foreign or omitted annotation, null/missing content). - Current accumulator/session suite: 438 passed on each of Pydantic 1 and 2, sync and async local WebSockets. - SDK mypy: 1,865 files passed; Ruff and formatting pass. - Base's verified custom-code check: unchanged 7,826 / 10,000; no schema or generator change. --- src/openai/lib/responses_websocket/README.md | 41 ++- .../lib/responses_websocket/_accumulator.py | 146 +++++++- .../test_websocket_accumulator_details.py | 347 ++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 525 insertions(+), 9 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/lib/responses/test_websocket_accumulator_details.py diff --git a/src/openai/lib/responses_websocket/README.md b/src/openai/lib/responses_websocket/README.md index 41c3dc7f71..ef046787bf 100644 --- a/src/openai/lib/responses_websocket/README.md +++ b/src/openai/lib/responses_websocket/README.md @@ -108,8 +108,47 @@ a changed nonempty item ID starts fresh at its index. A supplied response output list overrides the projected items, including an explicit empty list; omitted or null output retains only the helper's earlier projections. +`detailed_snapshot()` returns a separate mutable view when you need the fields +beyond selected text and tool inputs. It contains `stream_id`, `response_id`, +`terminal_type`, `response` and `output`. `response` is the last observed +lifecycle response metadata (excluding `output`), or `None` if none arrived. +`output` is a list of `{"output_index": index, "item": metadata, "content": rows}`. +Each content row is `{"content_index": index, "part": observed_fields}`. The +part's `annotations`, when present as a list, use +`{"annotation_index": index, "annotation": observed_fields}` rows. Indices may +be sparse; list position is not the API index. +For a message that has no projected content, the row's `content` is omitted, +null or empty according to what was actually received. + +For example, after collecting an item or terminal as above: + +```python +details = accumulator.detailed_snapshot() +for output in details["output"]: + for content in output.get("content") or []: + part = content["part"] + # Fields exist only if received: a WS delta may have no part/item type. + text = part.get("text") + citations = part.get("annotations") + token_scores = part.get("logprobs") +``` + +Logprobs accumulate with text deltas and a supplied `output_text.done.logprobs` +replaces them, including empty or null values. Content/item/lifecycle replacements +also replace their corresponding annotations and other metadata; text-only done +events do not erase citations. Refusal, tool/MCP and unknown item/part fields are +retained as observed, with unset and null distinct. Unknown standalone events still +pass through unchanged and are not accumulated. Annotation events enrich matching +known items on the accumulator's lane; annotations received before any matching +item/text remain available in the original event and do not start or replace a turn. +A partial field or unknown type +is provisional, not a fabricated validated response or a successful tool result. +You may mutate this returned view without changing the accumulator, events, or +earlier snapshots. The original `snapshot()` remains immutable and hashable. + `snapshot()` materializes the entire current projection and joins retained -fragments. It is proportional to the accumulated output, so requesting it after +fragments. `detailed_snapshot()` also materializes and copies its whole projection. +Both are proportional to the accumulated output, so requesting either after every delta or completed item repeatedly rebuilds growing prefixes. Use the original event for progress, including the final item itself on `response.output_item.done`. Treat `ssl.SSLError` and `anyio.EndOfStream` as connection errors until the upstream mappings are fixed, with a short comment linking pydantic/httpx2#854. Request failures now honor the retry budget and raise `APIConnectionError` on exhaustion. Streaming failures are wrapped without replaying the stream. Generic application exceptions still propagate unchanged. Closes #3969. Validation: - Client, streaming, and HTTPX2 suites: 368 passed, 22 skipped. - Regression coverage includes sync/async recovery, exhaustion, disabled retries, and failures before/after the first streaming event. - Ruff, targeted mypy, and `git diff --check` passed. - Tests used frozen dependencies because `uv run --locked` reported an existing lockfile mismatch; proxy environment variables were unset for the offline tests. - Pyright could not run because the repository requires Node 22.22.3 and the active Node is 18.19.1. --- src/openai/_httpx2.py | 8 ++++++-- tests/test_client.py | 45 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ tests/test_streaming.py | 13 ++++++++++-- 3 files changed, 62 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/openai/_httpx2.py b/src/openai/_httpx2.py index 8944928d84..48222a10ae 100644 --- a/src/openai/_httpx2.py +++ b/src/openai/_httpx2.py @@ -1,8 +1,10 @@ from __future__ import annotations +import ssl import sys from typing import Any, Protocol, cast +import anyio import httpx2 from ._constants import DEFAULT_TIMEOUT, DEFAULT_CONNECTION_LIMITS @@ -100,9 +102,11 @@ def timeout_exceptions() -> tuple[type[httpx2.TimeoutException], ...]: return (httpx2.TimeoutException,) if module is None else (httpx2.TimeoutException, module.TimeoutException) -def request_exceptions() -> tuple[type[httpx2.RequestError], ...]: +def request_exceptions() -> tuple[type[Exception], ...]: module = _loaded_legacy_httpx() -
